A new 3DS game from Culture Brain showed up on Rakuten. It's a bug monster Pokemon-like game.

Anyone willing to translate?
"BugMonster Super Battle" will release on 19.06, 9 years after the last BugMonster game came out on GBA.
In the game the protagonist aims to win the 'BugMon Grand Prix'.
You can customize your captured Bugmons using various items.
The game has about 100 unique attacks for the monsters.

Wow at 3DS and Vita being neck and neck. Is that more a positive for Vita or a negative for 3DS?
If a "positive" for Vita means a sub 20k performance I'd hate to see how you define "negative", hahaha.

Yokai Watch really surprised me. I suppose since it's a game heavily tied up to Japanese culture it'd be hard to replicate its success over here, huh. Speaking of which, any news about any plans to release it westward?

They've already migrated Sony's audience - they took key titles like MonHun. When the PSP is included how much has the handheld industry grown with the 3DS.
Right, I mean if they literally did the form factor thing they talked about in their financial briefing and had a handheld and a set top box that ran all the same things, that would fix their content issue.

But as it stands, I also expect three distinct platforms that they're splitting resources between.
Basically they want multiple independent software revenue streams, rather than a single stream available on multiple devices. And I can see why. But it boils down to the difference between a strategy you want to execute and a strategy you have the capabilities to execute.

without the anime it would have sold 2-300k, as Fantasy Life did
Since the anime arrived, sells skyrocketed and it became popular week after week

I saw a quote recently saying they have no plans at the moment. The game didn't sell until the anime came out. As such, I would assume they'd have to localize both for it to sell enough copies of the game to make a profit.

L5 is bring over the LBX anime and toys over to the west so we'll probably see that game next and I wouldn't be surprised if Youkai Watch was their next attempt assuming LBX doesn't bomb.

The Picross e (digital-only) series has sold over 200k on 3DS: http://www.famitsu.com/news/201404/25052333.html

That seems low to me given it encompasses four games, and the DS entries sold this:
NDS : Picross DS ( Nintendo ) { 2007-01-25 } - 68,329 / 266,641
NDS : Picross 3D ( Nintendo ) { 2009-03-12 } - 37,876 / 169,106

I guess 3DS owners aren't too keen on using the eShop.
Apples to oranges though, since 1) Nintendo published and properly marketed the DS games, while Jupiter themselves did the eShop series. And 2) each entry is relatively small, I would think they could easily put all four at retail in one package.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

This, and lets not forget the DS Picross titles still play well on the 3DS so its not there is a shortage of Picross titles. 200K is great for a low budget puzzle series especially since these are the experiences which many people also get on their phones for less money.

I don't think 200k over four releases is impressive given the franchise's past numbers, and the fact that we're nearing three years since the first eShop release. Obviously that's more than enough for Jupiter, or else they wouldn't be celebrating with a sale.

Anyways, Rise of Mana has reached 1 million users: http://app.famitsu.com/20140425_363942/

That's the impressive looking iOS game from Square Enix.

I'm going to cry once they share Agito's numbers, aren't I?

Interesting. Giving the success of GTA, and with annual CoD generally having done well; curious whether Western games can at least partly fill the void as Japanese pubs/developers have been slow to transition and the big Japanese franchises, KH, FF, RE, proper MG, seem quite far away.

Naughty Dog games sell quite decently too. Both Uncharted 3 and The Last of Us had >100k opening weeks.

The former was at 160k units sold in Famitsu 2011 top100. TLOU is at 220k units in Famitsu 2013 top100.

I wonder if the somewhat higher than usual for a home console digital rates for PS4 are possibly due to Remote Play? With all digital games you can play whatever you want in Remote Play without switching discs etc.

Either that Senran Kagura rhythm Vita game bombed, or we just got confirmation that Famitsu doesn't track DD-only games.
Wasn't it a F2P game with some paid DLCs you had to buy to get the full game?

I doubht a rythm game would bomb on Vita. It's one of the genres it has best covered, the audience is there.

I don't think it's only due to Remote Play. The consoles with better digital sales are the ones that have better multitasking and OS that rely work best when you're buying your games on Internet. Add to that how Sony make PS+ the perfect trojan horse too.

I have 3 Vita retail cards, and even if I like boxes sometimes it feels it's a hassle. It's much more comfortable moving between digital games that retail ones.

That's true enough I suppose

  • Remote Play
  • PS+
  • Better OS/Game Switching etc.

For the Vita though it makes far more sense to be digital as it improves mobility

Pretty sure I saw it was top 3 on Japanese PSN for all Vita Game downloads. That would at least have pushed it onto top 30, but we only have top 10 so far.

Pokemon Battle Trozei is DD only and its at the top of the list.
You can buy download cards at retail though, which are tracked by Famitsu like normal games.

If I recall correctly, rain (PS3) didn't appear in the regular top 10 either, despite Famitsu showing it would've sold enough to be in there in another list? Am on mobile and can't be bothered to search now though.

Is the Wii U not getting Child of Light in Japan? Or does the PS3/4 have some retail version of the game?

It's digital only... Like the PS versions which are basically a box with the download code, and some goodies.

You recall wrongly. I've searched it for you: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=107056685&highlight=rain+famitsu#post107056685

Anyway, Famitsu's method of pooling users is not gonna be infallible. Even the physical sales are sometimes wrong by a big margin (see when trackers have a big difference), let alone download sales.

PSN weekly top:

1. Dekamori Senran Kagura A + B
2. Samurai Warriors 4 Limited First Edition
hhttp://www.inside-games.jp/article/2014/03/29/75590.html

2. Dekamori Senran Kagura A + B
5. Samurai Warriors 4 Limited First Edition
hhttp://www.inside-games.jp/article/2014/04/05/75778.html

That version should at least be ahead of SW4 by Sony's own ranking (which I'm also sure is not infallible...)

You're talking about the 3DS migrating the PSP audience and support? I don't think that's entirely right. They don't have God Eater, Phantasy Star, Gundam vs Gundam. They don't have Dissidia or other modern Final Fantasy (although they have a retro one in Bravely Default). They don't have Metal Gear in any more significant a capacity than Vita does.

Looking at the Vita right now, I think there's a few areas within the traditional handheld space whose audience the 3DS has not fully captured. JRPGs, VNs, anime tie-ins, and hunting action games.

And congratulations (...?) on the tag.

They may not have migrated all of the audience, but I think they've subsumed a lot of it in securing Monster Hunter long-term. In the end I think we'll see both a contraction of the home and handheld markets going forward.

Also, I didn't even notice it until now. I'll take it as a compliment, lol.

Bic Camera Shinjuku:

The first thing you find when you reach the 5th floor, is the advert for the new 3DS XL promotion. With the purchase of 3DS you can get for free Animal Crossing or Youkai Watch.

In front, the stand for this week's biggest release: Sword Art Online for PSV:

Still, the shop has multiples stands for Youkai Watch. It's like they want people to reserve the second game while they're buying the first. Other stuff like manga or guides are also present.

The second important release of this week is Final Fantasy: Curtain Call for 3DS.

Mario Kart 8 still has huge adverts and good locations in every shop.

Persona Q also has a notable presence there.

Yodabashi Camera Shinjuku

Stands for the main games of the week (Sword Art Online, FinalFantasy Curtain Call and Famicon Remix 1+2).

The next big Vita game is also there, Freedom Wars.

And Mario Golf for 3DS, setted for next week.

Bandai namco has a stand showing different games for PS3, these are Idolmaster, Gundam Side story, Kamen Rider 2 and Tales of Zestiria.

Thanks for the pictures. I really wish i could play Idolmaster one for all , Persona Q and yokai watch. Guess i can import Idolmaster but getting the 3ds games would be hard.

Pre-orders for TFFCT seems to be higher than for the 1st game, so there's that. And yeah, the Golden Week is just around the corner, so they probably had a significant shipment (I don't think they can get any during the actual holidays, so they have to prepare in advance)
