El Capitan Todd
Give it a full year. If it manages to meet/beat expectations then you're all set for at least 4 good years of Switch sales.

I agree
I was wrong about its debut and I deserve to be mocked, but seriously it's still too early to call it "solid" in this very moment.
interest is surely there but critical issues are there too in terms of medium-term support

Looks like Capcom dropped their hostile takeover defense plan?

http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/news/html/e170427c.html

If some of you remember back in 2014 Capcom tried to take some measure to defend themselves against possible hostile acquisitions, but shareholders did not approve of them

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=838853

I'm not exactly sure what all is this about tbh ( might need to re-read again later) but it would be nice if someone can chime in.

They're making enough money that they feel any takeover bids would be a reasonable assessment of the company's value, instead of a company just trying to pick them up on the cheap during a transition, and thus are open to humoring acquisitions were one to happen.

If they disapprove of a takeover, they will also contest it in different ways (mainly using the legal system) than self poisoning their stock, which investors would prefer.

While EA never did this, it would have been reasonable for them to say "No, we're worth way more than $3.5 billion, so we're implementing special defenses in the event someone tries to do a hostile takeover." and then drop them now that they're worth $30 billion, which would be a much more realistic assessment of the company's value.

I avoided making a thread because I thought people would read it as "Someone is actively trying to take us over." instead of "We're healthier as a company now and don't need special defenses to assert our real market value."

First time Minecraft on Vita isn't on these since launch, truly the end of an era.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
3DS was a very weak player outside Japan. if there wasn't Pokemon last year it would be already in irrelevancy. Software sales were much bigger problem than hardware.

Weak ? Yeah. Very weak ? Dont know about that. DS was the only handheld that performed really great in the west software wise. 3DS did okay considering it wasnt designed to compete with tablets/smartphone and was quite the archaic console in many ways.

For what it was it did okay.

Great hype for Mario Kart 8 DX, overtaking Breath of the Wild at momentum, customers don't see it as a port.

Many people have placed preorders for Mario Kart and Switch together.

Big day is expected.

That's only because there's Splatoon characters in it. They are blinded by this!

I wonder what the bolded means exactly. I doubt it means it's overtaken BOTW already, but the what it does mean is unclear to me.

Horizon has now outsold more than any Uncharted game and will soon outsell The Last of Us on PS3 and more than all the Killzone games combined.

Should become the best selling game out of their western studios since Crash Bandicoot 3.

It already passed God of War 3?

Actually, while we still need more important demonstrations of overall support, I believe the past few weeks saw first signs of third parties being less hesitant towards the platform. You could say that a digital-only Senran Kagura and a late port of Fate/Extella aren't THAT important, but they still represent a start of presence on the platform; meanwhile, the recent announcements of Nights of Azure 2 and Nobunaga's Ambition: Taishi look like a decently convincing sign that Koei Tecmo believes in the platform, given how they are both the kind of games that have been heavily connected to Sony platforms for the past few years.

3DS SW LTD in Americas is sharply down compared to all the other Nintendo handhelds.

People who doubted MK8D, in a way doubted the system itself. To majority of handheld owners this is a game thats following MK7, same with Minecraft in a couple of weeks. These games are simply making their way to a portable and due to small audience of the Wii U it will also be their first MK8 experience for the majority of the owners especially in Japan. Switch as a device is simply far better than either the Wii U and 3DS and the launch lineup is miles better than either system.

In terms of MK8D - Battle Mode is actually something that will probably make MK8D a far greater game than the original especially on a device like the Switch. The portability and instant local/online is simply far greater strength than either Wii U or 3DS had at launch. We are talking a full class of students being able to play or enjoy something like MK8D without everyone having to have brought a Switch. The Switch is no doubt going to be one of the most popular gifts this year for kids.

In terms of the hardware - Nintendo really hit it out of the park. The periphirals are also I think very well integrated with the idea of the system. Personally I'd expect to see peripheral computing devices at a later time and a Dockless Switch being sold officialy by 2019. Switch's loading times also make it a very good machine for online games. It make the Wii U look like an ancient machine with Splatoon load times being longer than finding a match. Can't imagine how quickly I'd be able to jump into a MK8D match or Splatoon match on the Switch - I'm 100% certain these will be two games I will get digitally to be able to enjoy without worrying about switching cartridges.

Still no info when Nintendo plans to open preorders for Splatoon 2. After Mario kart next game is Arms and it depends how longer they want to give it air to breath before Splatoon takes all the attention.

ARMS should have an entire month+ to itself since Minecraft doesn't really count as a first party release and is digital. I imagine the marketing campaign will go into overdrive in March and they'll start ramping up Splatoon post E3.

Okay, but does that refer just to outselling Zelda this week, or having a higher attach rate than Zelda had at launch, or something else still?

I think we can assume it will have a higher first week opening than Zelda and then quickly outpace Zelda in terms of LTD in the following month or so. It will assume the mantle of the primary software bought with the system, even if Zelda does sell well along side it.

Let's make one thing very clear.

Nintendo doesn't have to fight for Monster Hunter.

It's Capcom's best interest to have Monster Hunter 5 on Switch.

This is not fanboy drivel. It's reality.

When Monster Hunter 5 is announced to not be a PS4 exclusive I wonder how some people will react. At most it will be multiplatform, there is no way Capcom risks their most stable franchise by dumping Nintendo.
But if Sony pays for it wouldn't that override that? Either way I hope they announce it soon .

There is zero reason for Capcom to be looking for someone else to pay for Monster Hunter.

Couldn't they do Switch/PS4/PC with how much closer Switch is to modern tech? It seems like the best way to do it.

So, wheeling this back to Fire Emblem, they essentially put out something that fit with the unexciting sequels of the Western gaming world, and received a sales drop in kind. It's easy to forget these kinds of impacts in Media Create threads because most of the games we discuss are very niche products selling to 100-150K people, and at an audience that small, it's easier to keep 70%+ of them even with a game that doesn't change much. However, once we get to these better selling games that hit a more broad audience, these factors really start to come into play.

Or, put way more simply, I don't think the issue was the lack of supports/romances (though removing or lessening popular features definitely hurts and they should definitely have strong supports/romances in the next game), but rather the lack of new and exciting features and ambitions. Given Fates was already the "improve everything" version of the Awakening formula, people were very ready for something new, so this was a double whammy, and led to the sales drop we see.

I guess I can see what you mean there. The next main game at least will have a giant graphical leap to the transition to the Switch, but I'm not sure what other features they could implement to really achieve that kind of innovation you talk about.

This Gaiden remake has things like villages and dungeons in full 3d outside of the map control, which obviously didn't turn out to be a big attraction.

When Monster Hunter 5 is announced to not be a PS4 exclusive I wonder how some people will react. At most it will be multiplatform, there is no way Capcom risks their most stable franchise by dumping portable.

There is zero reason for Capcom to be looking for someone else to pay for Monster Hunter.

FTFY. The main reason it should be on Switch is because there's no other portable left in Japan and MH's appeal is portability.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own

I mean, I'm sure if they were to annonce the wonderswan that capcom wouldnt be jumping for joy to put mh on the system instead of the switch, I'm pretty sure they will still put it on the switch

I think that's pretty much what will happen because Capcom can reuse all the art assets.

But it might be more like MH5 for Switch and MH Frontier 2 for PS4/PC.

Great hype for Mario Kart 8 DX, overtaking Breath of the Wild at momentum, customers don't see it as a port.

Many people have placed preorders for Mario Kart and Switch together.

Big day is expected.

If MK8DX really is that wanted, i can see tons of Switch being ready there to get by Nintendo.^^

And, i am sure BoTW,1-2 Switch, Snipperclips and Bomberman is also going to benefit with more Switch now on the hand of consumer.^^

They have to pay FUCKTONS of money to cover potential lost sales on MH5 and future instalment.

NAH...

PS4 numbers in Japan is not 'ideal'. And Mon Hun never sells well on consoles

I figured that was the case for it being a console game. I do think it would be a big gamble to spend that much to get it exclusive but I wonder if Sony would be willing to make that gamble.
