Wow, El Shaddai up there?!

Wow. El Shaddai did better than I thought it would.

Action games like NG/Bayo have a very defined market over there of around 50-100k buyers. If you make a decent action game and get some word out you should be able to sell in that range, so El Shaddai sales make sense.

Since no one else mentioned them; things of note here:

Life time sales/ first week.
Patapon 90,101 / 16,713 07/12/20
Patapon2 103,346 / 24,127 08/11/27
Patapon 3 49.000 / 49.000

Last Ranker: 111,036/ 60,757
02. / 00. [PSP] Final Promise Story (Image Epoch) {2011.04.28} - 60.000 / NEW
(Heh, the exact same people buying this perhaps?)

5th week sales of DQMJ2P are better then 5th week sales of the normal edition.

* Pokemon typing is pretty much sold out, Amazon's next shipment is on may 10th.

3DS is in major trouble. Iwata needs to drop the bomb on the double.

Just another note here: I read an interesting theory on a retailer's blog:

He noticed that a large amount of the 3DS's that he brought as trade ins are brand new. He believes part of the reason stores are so overdone with used hardware right now is because a large percentage of people who brought the system at launch just wanted to buy it to re-sell it, but no real demand from actual consumers were there yet.

DS sold 20k+ for several weeks in early 2005. 3DS is expensive and don't have good line up.

Not time to getting too pessimistic about 3DS.

I could see that being a factor, especially considering how difficult it was finding a Wii the first few years of its life.

It's funny, I actually preordered my 3DS primarily because I was concerned about supply shortages. If I had known that they would be so easy to find I probably would have waited until OoT to pick one up. Oh well, Shadow Wars was a pleasant enough surprise to make up for it.

Its a great result for Imageepoch given its their first self-published game. It will very probably fall short of the 150k they are aiming, but its right on the numbers of Last Ranker and World Destruction, way higher than their Luminous games or Arc Rise Fantasia or Criminal Girls, and only below 7th Dragon which did 82k first week.

Overall they must be happy (although I've read some poor reviews, could hit legs), and it wouldn't surprise me if the Black Rock Shooter game later this year has a better chance to break that 150k barrier.

Point taken but 3DS comes on the back of the most successful handheld ever.

Contast this with PS2, which also came off the back of the previous most successful console launch ever. How bad did PS2 figures get once the initial launch phase hysteria was over? Was it as bad as 3DS is now?

Talking of waiting, will Nintendo make an announcement on the May eShop update. It has to be soon surely?

End of May, possible dates -

EU - Fri 27th May
US - Sat 28th May

Maybe they should have thought of a launch period with some actual games people want. I hate it when systems feel like rush jobs due to lack of SW. I can only do AR for so long. No excuse for this staggered launch with features that aren't even here out of the box. Even the wife has put it down and went back to playing Pokemon Black on the DSL, seriously.

Is the 3ds launch lineup amongst the worst ever?

I know the PS3's was pretty bad but at least Resistance FOM was awesome.
I thought the DS has a pretty poor launch line-up. I think the 3DS had a decent launch, as I've enjoyed SSFIV and Shadow Wars quite a bit, but their biggest problem has been providing solid games after the launch. There was/is literally nothing to look forward to until OoT.

Is it possible that people just aren't interested in the the 3ds? I mean if it's main point is the 3d and a lot of Japanese handheld gamers play their handhelds on the commute. Isn't that kind of a problem, since the 3d requires you to be still? I mean I'm going to plead ignorance on these things, but I'm just asking. People are making excuses "oh wait for the games" or "it's the earthquake" , but could there just be something else going on?

The 3DS launch lineup is laughable imo, really bad. The NGP's is redeemed thanks to Uncharted for me, others seem really giddy for Wipeout so there's that as well.

I'm torn between doing my first day 1 console purhcase with the NGP and following my usual pattern of buying systems (i.e. I make sure there is nothing worthile left for me to play or wait for on my current system. I don't do backlogs.).

nice patapon growth. this pretty much cements the next entry, maybe for PSP2?

They could come up with some interesting stuff using the back and front touch panels.

I'm not sure how others feel but I personally haven't had much of an issue staying within the "sweet spot" when playing the 3DS. Even while riding in cars I haven't experienced any problems. I think it's far more likely that people don't care about the 3DS at all, like you originally mentioned.

Seriously though, a systems success really is almost entirely based on its software. I have no doubts the the 3DS will take off once the hard-hitting first party games from Nintendo come, not to mention Monster Hunter...
