If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

If the 3DS stabilizes around the 20k that would be okayish at best.

Let's see if those software releases at the end of May/June will do something.

Great numbers for the PSP. I wonder whether the NGP will come out in the US and Europe before Japan looking at those numbers. The NGP has a chance to beat the 3DS in Japan in Sony throws money at Capcom to get MoH exclusivity. Though I think they wont do it (which might then have the risk that the NGP is as successfull in Japan as the PSP in the US was).

True. The DS was pretty crummy. It did have SM64 though which was a lot of fun despite the slightly more difficult controls.

The DS did have Wario Ware and Kirby Canvas curse in the launch window which I loved. I think we all know 3ds will be fine in the long run, but right now I don't think I'm going to bite until I have more variety at my disposal. Nintendo is going to have another kickass E3 I'm sure.
I wonder if we'll ever see a handheld launch with a line-up as awesome as the GBA's. Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, F-Zero, Super Mario Advance, and Tony Hawk 2 is a pretty nice way to kick off a system.

Does anyone know were you can look after past Japanese releases (with dates)?. Or can anyone make a list of released 3DS games with dates and compare them with PSPs in the same timeframe?

For future reference, the total software tables shows known sales through each week, and provides links like what you've done up above to see the specifics. Easy to match up week 8 of one platform with week 8 of another or whatever.

Also looking at these I see Monster Hunter Portable 3rd looks to have sold about as much as the entire PSP library did from launch through the end of 2005!

The problem with that comparison is that the DS had Nintendogs hitting around 2 weeks ago, launch aligned

2 weeks ago launched aligned? Wouldn't it be about a month from now launch aligned?
Nintendogs hit at about 4.5 months. After the launch games, the next notable DS games were Yoshi Touch & Go at 2 months, Trace Memory at 3 months, then Kirby Canvas Curse at 4 months.

Thank you. But I meant PSPs lineup since 3DS launch. :)

But it looks like it´s missing quit a few PSP games.
Should have all that made the Famitsu Top 30 since then. If there's something notable missing, that's probably because looking at things that way it misses out on the continued sales of games released earlier.

Yes, I know. I was just looking after a complete list of all PSP and 3DS releases since 3DSs launch to compare the quantity ( a)with 3DSs launch lineup and b) starting with 3DSs second week).

02. / 00. [PSP] Final Promise Story (Image Epoch) {2011.04.28} - 60.000 / NEW
(Heh, the exact same people buying this perhaps?)

5th week sales of DQMJ2P are better then 5th week sales of the normal edition.

* Pokemon typing is pretty much sold out, Amazon's next shipment is on may 10th.

Patapon 3 will be interesting to look at. The game was well received in Japan (based on Famitsu reviews), is pretty solid, and has a huge focus on local and online community (and it works well). Patapon 3 may be the one that brings the franchise into being notable for Japan.

Does Sony not release MLB The Show in Japan? American baseball is popular in Japan and just baseball in particular. Surprised MLB2K11 makes it to Japan but not MLB The Show.

Point taken but 3DS comes on the back of the most successful handheld ever.

Really, as if the DS didn't launch off the back of the most successful handheld line ever. No one in their right mind is denying that the 3DS needs something to pick sales up, but you are trying needlessly hard to make the 3DS launch look worst than the DS.

3DS sales are going to drag for a long time. I don't see any game in the near future that will really get things going( I even have doubts about Mario Kart). The system seems to be viewed as another upgrade rather then a next gen system. The fault lies with Nintendo in releasing the DSi and XL on top of not launching with any killer apps.

Except for removing features (online play), the PSP version of The Show has basically been a roster update for the last several years.

Oh man at those PSP HW sales! That's a pretty insane number for any week of the year. That little hand held keeps on rolling in the land of the rising sun.

Nintendo must be pissed off. I don't think the 3DS will live for long, maybe the Game Boy will rise from its grave.

right now, no major 3DS titles have been dated after SF64 ships in mid-July.

It just hit me. 3DS = GBA. GBA got no "new" mainline entries in Mario/Zelda except the Capcom Zelda game. It did, however, get a ton of remakes. 3DS will get a Mario Galaxy game, but I think Miyamoto has also gone on record as saying expect more remakes. Every other Nintendo handheld gets new games, and then the other ones get mostly remakes, spinoffs, and some new trial games?

GBA wasn't a bad system for having a lot of remakes by any stretch, of course. And Superstar Saga was a great "spinoff" type Mario game. Just pointing out some seeming similarities here. Also, since the screens aren't interchangeable, 3DS seems like it will play more as a one-screen system with a supplementary screen (ala. Wii 2, apparently) then a "use both screens interchangeably" system. GBA was a one-screen system, just without any supplementary screens obviously.

No Afterburners needed here, though. :lol

And as mentioned before, 3DS will probably have a much longer life, since it has a lot further to drop. Double the price, double the lifetime? Obviously, there's some kind of limit in there. :lol

Price has very little to do with the active support and lifecycle of the machine. How much was the original Gameboy and how long did that last in the market?

In-fact, there's plenty of evidence to suggest that if a company gets the price wrong (too high), it can do permanent damage to the products fortunes and reputation of the company itself.

I am glad 3DS is shitting the bed. It is such a ugly looking piece of machine. It is as ugly as anything Fsher Price has designed. Plus 3D doesn't work. I played it. I got dizzy after half of an hour.

Nintendo should just declare 3DS is the "third pillar" and bring back the fucking second pillar.

Make the Gameboy again with the originally GBA profile. Basically a iPod touch with bottons on the sides. Just two buttons thats all I need. Sell it for 50 dollars and use game subscription to subsidize it. Also floor it with education games.

3DS should just taken to the back shot it at the head. Such a ugly piece of console. Can't they at least make symmetrical looking screens?

I can't even think of a proper response to this. My brain is malfunctioning. It's that stupid.

The screens are vertically symmetrical.

I'm glad 3DS is shitting the bed, but mostly for other reasons. I'm just tired of complacent Nintendo, they need to get their fire back.

Yeah I am in the same position. The way Nintendo handled and positioned the 3DS hardware just rubbed me the wrong way.

I just shattered your world with the Fisher Price revelation.

I hope Sony look at this and price the NGP accordingly, they should be competitive and match the 3DS price. I really hope NGP is successful in Japan, I want the same Japan support PSP is getting on NGP. Basically what Sony's aim with NGP is to continue to be a success in Japan with games like Hotshots, Gravity Daze, Monster Hunter, JRPGs and etc, but at the same time win the western audience with COD, Uncharted and etc.

Sony does have to play it smart with the NGP pricing. Anything more than 30,000 Yen might make the launch lukewarm. Sony just has to learn from Nintendo's mistakes. They made a triple whammy with the 3DS high price tag, no games, and bad marketing. (Don't think the general public know any added features other than 3D)

There's a lot of Wii games on the chart. A price drop for the hardware and its software could do a lot of things. It seems like whoever is buying Wiis now is also picking up the stronger software for it too, meaning the big hitters; DCKR, NSMB, Smash, etc..

Nothing is reversing the Wii trend now. It'll get a big spike with DQ and that's it.

Considering how abysmal PSP software sales have been in the U.S. for awhile now, they certainly have an uphill battle here. At least Japan has some momentum - though it's tough when both markets are almost completely opposite one another.

I'm not exactly convinced that this is possible, but even if we don't get an NGP price at E3 (quite likely, IMO), we should be able to get a sense of the likelihood of price-matching based Sony's comments. For comparison, this is what Jack Tretton said when asked about 3DS' price back in January:

I think if the quality's there, then the people will find a way to buy it, within reason... I think that if you could create content that consumers see as compelling, they'll find money that they didn't think they had.

That's over three months old, but it doesn't exactly exude confidence in matching 3DS' price point. If Sony gains that confidence, I expect to start seeing more open trash-talking of 3DS in interviews ("we're confident that NGP offers superior value for its price," criticism of 3DS as underpowered, etc).

I don't think price drop announced for Japan. Next retailer meeting isn't far and at least June and July Nintendo releases will be dated.

Do we have historical sales figures for the SNES in Japan? Someone posted sales number for the PS1 last thread, and I was curious if the PSP has a shot at making the top 5 best selling systems ever in Japan.

I would imagine the top 3 are DS, then Gameboy (+GBC), then PS2. What are the current #4 and 5 systems?

Its already past SNES (17.17m Famitsu, 17.15m Media Create) by MC tracking (barely 100k behind by Famitsu tracking).

NES is 19.23m (Fam) and 19.35m (MC).

So if the PSP manages 2 million more sales it should be able to pass the NES, SNES and PS1 for 4th place of all time. That's pretty impressive.

Psp sales owning in japan still. Crazy, sony is cleaning up in that part of the world in hw sales. They really could have a hit on there hands with ngp, ngp and a new sexy monster hunter and it would sell like wild fire.

So Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, AND Mario 3DS this fall, right? That could do it... /wait for ___
We'll get the lite sooner than later now too, I think.

Also, nice PSP numbers :) Price permitting, NGP could easily nullify the 3DS' shaky headstart.

So is there any to stop the PSP from making a comeback & passing the 3DS in YTD numbers after it's big launch & fast decline?

that's pretty crazy

PSP will take back the YTD lead for a few months, but I think 3DS will ultimately win the year come holiday season. Especially if the NGP launches this year in Japan.
