Calling PSP a failure at this point it´s absurd.

3D0 it´s a failure, Pippin it´s a failure, Virtual Boy it´s a failure. PSP is nothing of that.

Hardware sales-wise, the PSP is a success. When it comes to game sales outside Japan, however, it is a failure.

Was in GEO today and you can now buy a mint condition used 3DS for 1,7000, pretty nuts.

Just a note: it's nice to point out the fact that a year ago you could get a mint used psp-3000 for 10,000 yen, retailers don't like keeping huge stocks of hardware, when games come out for the system this price should recover a bit.

The PSP is successful as a piece of hardware, but pretty much a sinkhole for software outside of MH.

What are you talking about?? Have you looked at the top10 software charts for the last year or so? Have you not seen all the PSP software that is not MH consistently in the top10 selling good numbers?

PSP has the healthiest 3rd party software sales currently. Which is why everyone is making their games for it.

Reminder: Only one PSP game released in 2010 (KH:BbS) sold over 300K units in the US, with the rest of the top ten - a list that also included new, exclusive MGS and God of War titles - selling "well below" 200K.

The PSP hasn't had software debut over 20k in months in the US.

And the levels for each year would be ...

Revisionist history isn't going to work. PSP software sales have been absurdly low for its hardware sales. For a long time, its tie ratio was in the 2s in Japan, despite good/great hardware sales. It still doesn't have any monster hits not named Monster Hunter, and 3-400K is still the expected ceiling for most software not related to Monster Hunter on the system.

Now, it's gotten a lot better in the past couple of years as developers have prematurely abandoned the DS, and Monster Hunter has again propelled PSP to new heights. If you want to just talk about the last couple of years and say PSP has been a decent software selling system, then that's fine. Looking over its full life in Japan, it's still very much underperformed software expectations based on the hardware sales it's received, though.

Again, nothing new for a topic in an MC thread. Comparisons to GBA from launch have been done before here, too.

But that was the same for GBA outside of Mario and Pokemon, no?

2 weeks ago the tie ratio was around 20:1, not too shabby.

GBA was not the DS in terms of software. That said, it was a lot better than PSP. > 1 million? Yes, it's Pokemon and Famicom Mini Mario. Compare 400K+ on the two. ~2x as many GBA games in that range than PSP games. And that's with 2 more meaningful years on the market for PSP than GBA had.

Again, PSP has gotten a lot better than it was in the past couple of years, though.

Nothing new for a MC thread: but you are ignoring the piracy factory in PSP/DS. In modern nations it was pretty obvious if/when you were buying pirate software/nowhere near as simple as it is for pirates today.

Piracy was also pretty huge on GBA, I'm not sure what you mean? Most gamers I knew irl just downloaded GBA games and played them on emulators, unlike PSP you didn't even need the actual system to pirate GBA games. And filesizes were so small, they were pretty easily stored and sent online.

How is he revising history if all he did was post known HW and SW numbers for both PSP and GBA?

He's trying to say that PSP and GBA were more comparable than they were. By posting LTD worldwide shipped totals, it misses the fact that GBA did most of its selling in Japan in less than four years, whereas PSP has had > 6 years in Japan. Cut it off to four years for each, and a vastly different picture arises. PSP has had good hardware sales for a long time. Software has gotten better the past couple of years, but it's still not just super-duper in Japan. :p

FINALFANTASYDOG said:

PSP sold so much hardware with so little software in Japan for a long time, so piracy had to play a part. However, it can't be quantified. DS with R4 and GBA with every flashcart under the sun was also exceptionally easy to pirate, so it's not too easy to say who would've gained more if piracy weren't an option.

Yeah, I still remember reports of pirated games available before the system was even released. That may have just been the U.S., though. :lol

It was everywhere - GBA software market largely collapsed when carts became widely available, it just had the fortune of staying ahead of that curve longer then PSP.

Software has gotten better the past couple of years
Outside of Japan? Those tie-ratios posted earlier are worldwide - PSP has been stuck near 4 for at least 3-4 years (which is probably the real sign of unhealthy software market).

The similarities between 3DS and PS3 are pretty striking. The only thing that remains is to see if the 3DS's "wait for" game pays off.

In what way is the PS3 a success? Unless Sony's goal was to squander their position as console market owner while burning billions of dollars, then it has to be considered a failure.

GBA wasn't exactly the definition of success. Actually it goes something like these:

US: great
JP: good
EU: mediocre to bad.

Using what Garaph contains of Famitsu numbers through 209 weeks:

GBA Soft: 47.36 M
GBA Hard: 14.10 M
GBA Tie: 3.36

PSP Soft: 22.77 M
PSP Hard: 10.74 M
PSP Tie: 2.12

Comparison inequalities of note:
*GBA's early years have annual Top 300 software versus Top 500 for PSP's early years. Advantage PSP.
*Since I went to launch anniversaries, PSP here ends just shy of such a Top 500 where the apparent software sales jumped nearly 2 million in a week, while GBA only has a quarter year of such "hidden sales". Advantage GBA.

Not sure about software.
Not in easily imageable form yet, but through 9 weeks of Famitsu software info I've got 3DS at 0.95M and PS3 at 0.55. Considering the above image, looks like a tie ratio of just over 1 for each.

Did we ever get any info for the number of f-ism subscribers?

Looking at the ultra high cost of f-ish.net subscription I really wonder who was that brave ninja who had the courage to leak first day sales, before he was discovered.

Meditating about this chat... what is the definition of success and failure? Could be really described as something absolute? best ratios? bigger installed base?

Or could is always something relative to its influence on history? was Xbox a failure, or it´s the successful first step of Microsoft into the industry? What happens if NGP becomes a raging success and dethrones Nintendo from their top position in that sector, would sceptics see PSP in other light, as the precursor of that success?

I have been trying to think on my own ideas about success, under expectations and failure, and I believe there is a perfect example in 32 era:

PS: unquestionable success.
N64: under expectations.
Saturn: failure (yes, I'm sorry to say it, think on it just in sales terms.)

That has three well defined layers that I think we can agree. But other generations get more complicated:

PS2: unquestionable success.
Xbox: failure? (didn't sold much, but could be seen as a first good step in a complicated market, strategic success?)
GC: under expectations (still profitable, but didn't recover the lost ground of N64, strategic failure?, or turning point for Nintendo that made possible the successful Wii?)
DC: failure (I don't think it can be argued from a sales viewpoint.)

I believe it´s quite complicated to define what makes something successful in absolute terms, even with rates and installed base. The influence of each console for their companies is important too, and that's something only measurable with time.

Did this make any sense?

I agree with the list but I would include N64 into failures. Almost everything went wrong with that system and you also have to count in 64DD.

Except the software? I mean, the 4 best-selling games of the "N64/PS1 era" in USA are N64 games.

You are right but aside of WWE and Star Wars games, there wasn't exactly any third-party offering that could rival its contenders on PS1 sales-wise.

Goldeneye, Mario Kart, Super Mario 64 and so on were more or less feeling lonely in Nintendo fans houses. But your point stands.

I said almost. Sales of specific software can't balance the dive Nintendo took after SNES.
N64 is and will remain my most played console ever and you can't believe how much it annoys me to call it a failure.

May initial shipment forecast from azalyn. Critical weeks for short-term 3DS performance begin.

Wii price drop in Japan to either ¥15,000 or Open Price seems likely. I don't think they'll drop the price of their first party software.

If the price drop doesn't happen, then it's a tacit admission that Nintendo's just going to let the system wither away and die. The sad part is that the Wii doesn't have to die at this point. If Nintendo managed to get sales to around 15-20K a week, then that'd be fine, really. It'd still be higher than the PS3's early days, would still be beyond the GameCube's average levels and wouldn't be much lower than what the PS3 has done in the last few months.

I seem to recall that the SNES took a dive from the NES in terms of both hardware and total software sales as well, so one could say that the downward spiral started slowly with the SNES, accelerated with the N64 and then hit rock bottom with the GC.

I agree on the N64, my alltime favorite.

Didn't N64 actually outsell SNES in the US or NA, thanks in part to growth of the market experienced between 1996 and 2001?

If I'm remembering correctly, there was about a 17 million sales difference between N64 and SNES worldwide, of which 10 - 12 million came from Japan, and then the rest from Europe.

No, but it was near. N64 had 20 million, SNES 23 million.

No. SNES sold more in North America than N64. 23.35m vs. 20.63m

Nintendo's probably going to give the Wii one last jolt since the Wii2 isn't coming untill 2012. So my guess is a pricedrop, some bundling and the new Kirby this summer along with some Pokemon spin-off as their plan to drag the Wii over the finish line.

Looks like total software sales were higher at least.

EDIT: According to Nintendo's Numbers, both N64 AND Gamecube had better total software sales in North America than the SNES did. Pretty surprising. But I guess age demographics in the gaming industry started to shift away from children, and towards older teens and young adults in the 32/64bit gen (for North America). Makes sense that people with more disposable income would be buying more games.

I remember something from Nintendo PR back in the day stating that the N64 outpaced the SNES until March '99 in both hardware and software sales, but after that it fell behind with the hardware. It did however sell more software in total, ~142 million vs ~130 something million for the SNES. The precise numbers should be in Nintendos old fiscal reports.

The N64 first party lineup significantly outperformed their SNES counterparts, which were relatively soft in terms of sales.

I imagine they will. It looks like they are transitioning it into a budget platform in other regions. This is the natural progression of popular consoles especially with a successor announced and launch targeted. The question is more have they directed all resources to Cafe and 3DS or will they release a couple more big games in the fall.

They've said they're planning on publishing one game per month and I expect them to stick to that. I think only Zelda is left to come from their main teams.
