On Famitsu last year Mario Kart 7 and GTA V sold about 130k each.

For the year so far both have sold about 80k, they're on track of surpassing last year's sales.

Is there some unique parts in the switch that would cause manufacturing issues?

Maybe something in the joycons or the dock? They need to get on top of this, they've got lots of momentum right now.

I'd say the screen would be the issue if anything consider we know JDI are only making 10 million for the year and had 3 million ready for March(slightly higher than Nintendo shipped).

I'm starting to thing those 10million comments are because of some manufacturing issues.

I'm sure any manufacturing issues are long since worked through, the 10 million is just nintendo not wanting to get burned by over promising again, we'll have a better idea when (if) we get Aprils USA numbers but cant see them having trouble producing enough to go well past the forecast

I'm sure they can make more if nintendo want them to, just how quickly they can ramp that up remains to be seen

I wanted to look at Japanese publishers and their reliance on foreign markets since it's been a recent discussion point. Here is a sampling:

Bandai Namco pg. 71: https://www.bandainamco.co.jp/en/ir/library/pdf/annual/en_2016_annual.pdf

Capcom pg. 91: http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/data/pdf/annual/2015/annual_2015_01.pdf

Square-Enix pg. 66: http://www.hd.square-enix.com/eng/pdf/ar_2016en.pdf

Konami pg. 24: https://www.konami.com/ir/en/ir-data/statements/2017/en0131_7px5xn.pdf

Koei-Tecmo pg. 25: https://www.koeitecmo.co.jp/e/ir/docs/ird4_20160930.pdf

Sega pg. 120: http://www.segasammy.co.jp/english/ir/library/pdf/printing_annual/2016/all_ar2016_e.pdf

Bandai Namco, Konami, and Sega make a ton of money on other types of businesses, but you can basically subtract the entire revenues of those segments from the Japan total, and Japan still remains the largest region by far.

The numbers speak for themselves. It's important to note that these are driven by mobile software, but let's be aggressive and cut sales by 2/3s or 3/4s or more to account for that, and Japan is still comfortably ahead. Proportionally, foreign markets are small to Japanese publishers. Of course they want to expand overseas, but the homeland will remain the most important for the foreseeable future.

Interesting, thanks for this.

Edit: ok, read some replies to this. Guess it varies by publisher.

Zelda Wii 10th week - 10,773 / 397,250 -15.4%

Zelda Switch 10th week - 16.505 / 410.231 -3%

with zelda wii u performing better than zelda gc + downloads, zelda botw will easily reach 1m, most likely by end of the year

im definitely on the boat that zelda wont be that affected by upcoming multiplayer-centric games

I wonder if Switch can sell 5 million in 2018. It would need a price cut probably, for the sake of being more affordable.

If it does, it would be pretty close to PS4 LTD (and above PSV/WIU but who cares).

Btw, did anyone mention this earlier? Majin Shoujo Combat x Brave Dungeon is coming to Switch.
http://gonintendo.com/stories/279919-majin-shoujo-combat-x-brave-dungeon-coming-to-switch

Nier doing well and FFXV STILL in the top 30? SE must be happy.
I'm sure they're happy about Nier, but as far as I know, FFXV is still trying to get rid of its initial shipment and is HEAVILY discounted because of this. Square already made their money off the retailers with the initial shipment, so at this point retailers are just trying to get some money off of leftover stock. Still nice to see nevertheless.

Did anyone buy Brave Dungeon on 3DS? Does anyone care? Will people who didn't care before suddenly care about a "HD" port of Brave Dungeon with a cheapo minigame thing (?) tacked on? Mysteries.

Maybe someone who is actually familiar with this super niche franchise can tell us more about sales expectations.

Yeh I don't claim to know anything about this title really, so I thought folks here might be able to give more information :).

Looks like Brave Dungeon was 500yen on 3DS, so I think this is definitely something comparable to Kamiko. Probably super niche, but it shows JP indies are also moving to Switch from 3DS.

so............ will the switch continue to hold 40-50k until splatoon 2 launch or nah?

It's impossible to say. Demand still seems to be outripping supply from all reports so at least for the moment that seems to be the case. We are now entering the slow season so I guess we'll soon find out. The release of minecraft should help it keep chugging along. Not sure about ARMS but I'm sure it'll do decently as well.

If it does sell that we'll right through to splatoon 2 then I think it's going to have a monster year sales wise. In general I think if it's still selling that well by splatoon 2 I think the switch is on it's way to being the next 20 million+ console in Japan.

btw it makes sense that nintendo didn't really up shipment for golden week, it is better to save that stock for arms release to encourage people to pick up the game when they buy the system, golden week is really just another week at this point to nintendo when the switch is going to sell out regardless, might as well save that for actual game release weeks

Maybe they just didn't have any stock to hold back. I'm sure they would have wanted more than 70K for Mario kart week but they just couldn't get that many out there. In the next few months sales should slow a little WW and they can possibly allocate a little more to Japan. More importantly though hopefully they'll start producing more within a few months to meet demand.

yeah thats true, but as we've seen, nintendo has been able to stock around 80k whenever they've felt the week was big enough, ie splatoon test fire and mk8d

japan only gets a tiny portion of total switch sales from what we've seen so sending out an extra 40k doesn't take much effort imo, it just depends on whether nintendo feels it needs to or not

i think they're already producing more than they've started with, i have no doubt they're thinking about how to fulfill demand for this holiday season already, we have already seen increased production in effect, just how much more is the question

i think nintendo can easily reach 16-20m worldwide for the fy if they had the production, 10m is just them playing it safe

jj984jj

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
So happy Nier got a golden week bump. It's such a surprise hit, performance in Japan and on Steam just put a smile on my face and that's only a portion of the sales.

I wonder if they might push at least a little bit of extra stock out this week because of minecaft

If it was physical maybe. But a download only? I doubt it. Nintendo digital downloads are clearly in a better position recently, but it's still far away from other regions. In Japan physical is still king, even for a game like Minecraft.

And even if it was a physical release this week, Minecraft isn't an instant record smasher. It's a slow burn with loooooooong legs.

If Nintendo is in a position to push more stock, they should whenever they can, but if they miss the Minecraft digital launch I don't believe it's a huge deal.

I also still contend that Nintendo didn't push more units out just for the Splatoon 2 testfire. I really think that had more to do with the end of the financial year.

i think it was both, upping shipment for the testfire helps nintendo gauge splatoon 2's demand some what i assume

agree on minecraft, the digital launch wont necessarily need a boost in shipment, it isn't even their game so there isn't as much incentive to push it compared to something like arms which needs all the help it can get
