124K vs 128K is in the same ballpark to me. Wrong?

Uncharted 4 had 1 additional day tracking from 3 so it's closer than you think. LTD comparisons will be the important, the franchise is somewhere at 200k.

Best versions behave like legs for established franchises. They tend to sell less and sells with new entries.

Uncharted has a declining rise when you add all versions

160k -> 195k -> 210k

There isn't any reason for 4 to change the pattern, stabilization is the expected.

01./00. [PS4] Uncharted 4: A Thief's End <ADV> (Sony Computer Entertainment) {2016.05.10} (¥7.900) - 128.724 / NEW
uncharted doing pretty well

02./01. [3DS] Kirby: Planet Robobot <ACT> (Nintendo) {2016.04.28} (¥4.700) - 24.298 / 248.951 (-70%)
a bit too big a drop for my liking. Come on Kirby.

08./07. [PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition <ADV> (Sony Computer Entertainment) {2015.03.19} (¥2.400) - 5.693 / 768.532 (-45%)
09./08. [WIU] Splatoon # <ACT> (Nintendo) {2015.05.28} (¥5.700) - 5.237 / 1.362.230 (-45%)
10./09. [WIU] Super Mario Maker # <ACT> (Nintendo) {2015.09.10} (¥5.700) - 4.030 / 874.405 (-55%)
the legs trio back in the top 10. low numbers will do that

PS4 | 23.239 | 24.880
PS4 stays pretty stong
3DS # | 17.595 | 26.242
big 3DS drop
PSV # | 12.299 | 18.090
WIU | 3.896 | 7.224
more drops
XB1 | 115 | 60
Nearly double the numbers. the true winner this week

anyway. Bad and pretty uninteresting week

Could Overwatch become a Minecraft/Splatoon-like evergreen for the PS4?

Honest question. Of course it's rare that a game becomes such a phenomenon and I wouldn't bet on it happening. But idk I see quite a bit of potential here.

I have no idea how Overwatch will perform in japan tbh. I can see it be evergreen, but never at the rate/numbers of the two titles you've talked about, that are pretty much monsters.
Different genre aiming for an audience a bit older, not a global one.

While I could see Overwatch doing well in Korea and China, I'm having more issues seeing it succeed in Japan where there's way less of an FPS culture.

Even though Western titles are doing better in Japan these days, they still don't perform anywhere near what Western games do in other major Asian markets.

This is a big part of why dedicated devices are doing so badly in Japan in the first place. The local market doesn't like the same games that do well across all the rest of the major markets.

I think the game won't have a big first week, but i expect very good legs.

Minecraft / Splatoon level is out of the question imo, but who know.

Imo, i'm sure that with this insane Splatoon success FPS like this will be more successfull in Japan... It really could have big potential Overwatch.

Fair enough, like I said these are rare phenomenons so it's impossible to predict it'll get that big.

The thing is that I can see the artstyle pulling in a lot of younger players (~10+) too which is unusual for a shooter and makes it the only game of the sort on PS4. Also, being purely a multiplayer game, there's a lot more potential for legs if it manages to have a decent launch.

I can see it both completely bombing or selling for years. Gonna be interesting to watch in any case.

I feel there's a bit of a difference in terms of accessibility between third person and first person shooters.

There are very few first person games from Japan in general actually, so it's not something that's been as ingrained on local audiences.

Mind, Call of Duty did sell a lot of units, so there's an optimistic argument to be had.

That audience doesn't really exist on the PS4 in Japan. So its going to be difficult to pull them in.

If Vita could run it, I think Overwatch would have had a much better time there and been a bigger shot at "big success". Or on the NX handheld, heck it might synergize with Splatoon (on NX handheld) and throw in some Nintendo/Splatoon skins.

But in the console space, I can't see it doing much more than what CoD has done.

Overwatch has waifus, so it has the potential to be the best selling FPS (apart from Splatoon) in Japan. C90 will decide how long the leg is. If the fan-art delivers......

I'm joking. But yeah, Overwatch definitely has potential.

Why have they yet to open up in Japan themselves; Bethesda and Take Two seem to be doing alright, and Activision releases more big hits.

I predict SE to promote Overwatch quite heavily so it may sell decently (like others said probably up to CoD level). However from there it is very difficult to go up. I also agree that Japanese audience prefer TPS much more than fps because they want to "see" characters they're controlling.

They seem to be Activision's go-to for JP publishing.

Lol. No chance for it being a big success then imo. Unless they somehow magically revamped how they handle western games. I expect 100-200k for Overwatch at best, and I don't see S-E turning it into an evergreen title.

I don't really think this is a TPS/FPS problem btw. I feel it is really about marketing, awareness, and how you target an audience. That's where Nintendo succeeds where many other publishers fail - turning stuff into something for the whole family and for everyone, not just core gamers and existing audiences in a narrow niche. The reverse is also true, that for titles which very clearly ONLY target core gamers, Nintendo struggles to market on their platforms because they don't fully understand that.

Yeah, it doesn’t help that some of Japan’s most popular IP like MH, DQ, have been on handheld platforms for years now. Sony and Nintendo really have to get a stronger software output to increase hardware sales, seems to some type of effort going in this direction though from all the announcements.

Yeah, man!

Major western games have been doing fairly well as of late.

Well, Japanese fans of AAA games have little choice but to go with western games nowadays ... that's my theory anyway.

As for Uncharted 4 ... it just about matched Uncharted 3 at retail, and franchises generally get more frontloaded the more titles in they are, so I think it's a bit premature to be calling people out for saying the franchise has hit it's ceiling. On the other hand it's the first on PS4, which may make it slightly less frontloaded, and digital sales would also add to the total, but I'd wait for a while before being able to say whether the franchise is increasing or flatlining in sales.

Ah, because they aren't coming from Japan, right? I see what you're getting at. How did AAA western titles generally perform last generation? Or the generation before that?

I don't really think that's as much of a factor as some people think. We're not really seeing people buying more western games because there are a lack of Japanese AAA games. Instead I think we're just seeing less people in Japan buy consoles and AAA games in general because there are less. Some western AAA games are selling more because there's more marketing and better localization these days, and possibly because the core console base in Japan has aged along with the industry, and are more in line with western taste than before. Even then, we're not seeing a huge change in general.

PS3 - GTAV is the 5th best selling single PS3 SKU in Japan ever with over 700k. CoD does about 300-500k, but most of the other "big" titles like TLoU and Battlefield still only sell 200-300k on average.

PS2 - Rachet and Clank sold over 500k, GTA VC and SA sold about 400k each.

PS1 - Crash Bandicoot 2 and 3 both sold about 900k each.

One thing to understand is that it's not always a good comparison across generations because in the past many western focused titles were not localized well or marketed well in Japan. In some cases they weren't released at all because no distributor was interested or they were picked up by small Japanese publishers and released as curiosities rather than big major titles. But it's not like the interest in western IPs were never there, or that people were actively shunning foreign titles. That's a misconception.

Right, I wouldn't necessarily say that sales of western games are higher nowadays than before (I'm too lazy to work that out, but I'm sure someone else will if it's interesting enough), but it's probably the one part of the home console market which has held up against an overall declining market. So I'd expect that market-share-wise western games have been increasing for some time (again, I haven't actually worked that out).

So yeah, I think there is probably a direct correlation between the percentage of Western to Japanese AAA titles released, and the percentage of Western to Japanese sales.

Sales of western sales, share and absolute numbers, have risen last years and it's a combination of Japanese output going (way) down and western output going up.

It's not like Japan suddenly started liking western titles, there have been many titles that had high sales before. Call of Duty sales saw its glorious days during PS3 era when S-E took over the publishing, companies taking seriously localization and promotion has played big part too.

http://gematsu.com/2016/05/digimon-universe-appli-monsters-cross-media-project-teased

The latest issue of V-Jump features a single-page teaser for a new cross-media project called Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters.

The teaser page says it’s a “huge project” consisting of toys, a game, and a TV anime that involves Bandai, Bandai Namco Entertainment, and Toei Animation. It is planned to begin this fall.

Further information will be announced at the Tokyo Toy Show on June 9.
So a new Digimon game coming. Although based on the name it sounds like a smartphone game there is already one which I believe Nirolak posted that was already doing pretty well.

Since more will be announced at Tokyo Toy Show, maybe they will go for 3DS and aim at the children's market?

cw_sasuke

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

3DS looking ready quite busy for this year with the games planned... I think they are better off owning the Sony market with less competition with these type of games.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Apparently 3DS is getting a One Piece 2D fighting game made by Arc System Works?

Ahem, I mean...it's surely the same team behind Extreme Butoden. Maybe the same engine as well?

Digital only made up 8% of Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness total sales. I don't think anybody bought it through PSN after its launch week because of high retail discounts.

Dark Souls III current LTD including digital sales for the months of March and April is 369.406. It has already outsold the original release of Dark Souls and Dark Souls II.

Does this not show that digital share increase over time? In first month digital share of DSIII is only 18% and in second month I expect it to be > 30%.

Do we have second month retail numbers for DSIII?

Where do you see that, digital share decreases over time. For Dark Souls III it's at 17,75% until April.

Is My Hero Academia expected to sell kind of well (aka 150k+)?
Only getting some popularity in the west now (anime), but apparently it's been popular in Japan.

So a new Digimon game coming. Although based on the name it sounds like a smartphone game there is already one which I believe Nirolak posted that was already doing pretty well.

Since more will be announced at Tokyo Toy Show, maybe they will go for 3DS and aim at the children's market?

It's a new kids oriented cross media project, so I think a 3DS game is quite likely. There will also certainly be a smartphone app given that the title seems to be setting that idea up, but I think a traditional game is also quite likely.

Isn't it Bandai Namco anime game? Which probably means somewhere in the region of 20-35k FW?

More interested to see if Kenka Bancho holds true to YSO's prediction.

Another SO5 interview with Kobayashi, but this time he talks a bit about the game's reception on Japan:

"The audience for games these days is made up with a lot of people that don't have that kind of time to spend with a single game," Kobayashi explains, "and they are put off by a game that asks them to put in 100 hours to get to the end and see everything. Because of that we deliberately made the pacing a lot faster than Star Ocean has seen in the past and that can make the game seem shorter, but maybe that is not what some of the core fans wanted."

"From the core Star Ocean fans that have been following the series for a long time, there have been mixed opinions about Star Ocean 5. We've had some very good and some very bad comments," Kobayashi says when I ask him about how the game, released at the end of March in Japan, has been received. "Because of what has been done with previous Star Ocean games maybe what a lot of long-term fans were expecting was a really long game that's going to take you many, many hours to get through. What we did this time was slightly change the focus, though."

"We really wanted to attract new players for the good of the future of the franchise."

"Looking to the future, if we're going to take Star Ocean on another 20 years, then we absolutely have to appeal to more fans and younger fans," states Kobayashi. "That will allow us to achieve a generational changeover and prevent the series being locked into a single generation."

With the sales numbers posted by Chris1964... I think they failed big time in Japan ;(

If only there was a game design model where it was possible to get through a game quickly, but there was also lots of optional content for those who wanted more. Maybe even one frequently used with RPGs.
