Aren't the joycon colors just the red and blue ones with the pink and green ones not releasing until Autumn. Maybe for Smash Bros they will release a purple and orange joycon similar shades to the GameCube.

According to the Switch stock status site, almost all stores closed pre-orders of the Splatoon 2 Set Bundle (Amazon.jp, Rakuten, Yodobashi Camera, Bic Camera, Seven & Holdings and Toys R Us).

Nojima stores still haven't opened pre-orders, they will announce it via Twitter.

Comg stores will celebrate a lottery, and only the winners will be able to pre-order the Splatoon 2 Bundle.

MyNintendoStore doesn't sell the bundle. But they opened orders 2 hours ago for the normal set. As always, they sold out in a few minutes. They will open again orders this evening.

I know this is a regular thing with products in Japan but I can't help but laugh at how funny and sad this is.
Win the right to pay money for something!

That said it's more fair than the rush/scalper culture of hard to get items in the west.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Don't go to the amazon.co.jp bestsellers page right now....lol

Current Amazon.co.jp charts answer the question "Can a single game occupy 14 positions out of top 20, between games / bundles / accessories?", and the answer is "Why not?"

Jim Sterling made a video about nintendo doing exactly that for their products. But I dont think they would do it for a console.

At least for me it makes no sense.

It's funny how all the people claiming that the NES Mini was suffering from artifical shortages never admitted they were wrong when a) Nintendo didn't ship many units for Black Friday b) didn't ship many units for the rest of the Christmas season c) didn't ship many units in the new year d) stopped production altogether.

You know, every evil masterplan needs to have a pay off at some point. In the case of artificial shortages it means to artifically increase demand to flood the market with new units when interest peaks.

But Nintendo never did that. They just plain and simple miscalculated demand and were unable to react in a timely manner (something that once again seems to happen with Switch: It feels as if Nintendo was woefully underprepared for the case that Switch is actually successful).

But, hey, clearly the NES Mini was just a marketing ploy to boost interest in an SNES Mini! Or something.

Now I'm wondering how things will be if they end up revealing Pokémon Stars and the SNES Mini Classic at E3.

It still confuses me that they would do that when they have the Switch to sell but, I guess the NES Mini Classic gave Nintendo a lot of exposure last year.

This is pretty much going to be like a second launch for the Switch in Japan. Summer vacation, Splatoon 2 bundle - it's too much for Japan to handle. Nintendo needs to not underestimate demand and focus shipments for Japan for the Splatoon 2 launch.

it knew the thirst for Splatoon is pretty big, but to think it was going to be this big is ridiculous. I mean it's like the pokemon level of madness

It's going to be the biggest game of 2017 in Japan afterall - doubters going to be proven wrong by the squids

Yeah I really have no idea of the strategy with a SNES Mini.

NES Mini was a stopgap and PR device after the Wii U's slow limp to the finish line. But now they look set to possibly have the #1 selling console again, or at least a very healthy one.

What do you mean? Is it your opinion that Splatoon is a bad game? Or shouldn't sell well?

Historically conservative Nintendo took a risk with a new IP and it paid off. I think it is sending they right kind of messages.

I have seriously never seen anything like that.
Its probably uncommon that a game get that many SKUs, game, hardware bundle, 3 seperate Amiibos, controller, pouch, bag and two different colored handstraps. Amazon is also smart to cash in on the hype, they have 8 Splatoon SKUs/bundles that Amazon has made or got deals for. Definitelly not a common senario :)

the fact that Dragon Quest of all things is drowning in Splatoon 2 merchandise is pretty telling.

wouldn't that point at Splatoon 2 selling at least 2 million alone in Japan?

We cant really use Amazon ranking for that this close after pre-ordered started. Even certain Xbox One games have been within the top 3 in these charts close after pre-orders started. Same goes for more niche games.

That said though, i dont think theres much doubt that Splatoon will sell at least 2 million units in Japan.

LTD I think that's a safe predictions - it's only half a million more than the original did on Wii U. I would think it'll end up closer to 3.5-4 million LTD with the Switch' success and Splatoon 2 being a sequel to a cultural phenomenon.

Splatoon 1 sold like 1.5M in Japan alone. And that's on Wii U.

Splatoon 2 can get there, no question. The question is how long till the Switch reach more than 2M to accommodate the eventual 2M software sales.

The WSJ rumor was 8m originally to 16m. For production, which isn't the same as target shipments.

16m being produced would make sense with a conservative shipping estimate of 10m, but if the 10m is really all they think they can manage then I don't think those numbers add up.

True, it's just a worry I've had since hearing about Japan Display's financial issues in general. I think this holiday's shipments will probably be a lot more telling about their production capacity.

Perhaps the 10m forecast isn't just them being conservative. Maybe they know it's going to take several months for the increased production to show up on store shelves? Doubling production isn't instant, after all. If supply is going to be constrained longer than we expected, like past July, 10-13m might not be that far off.

Didn't the original Splatoon reach ~1.7m with digital? I can't remember. Anyways, 2m is all but guaranteed. I agree with your LTD estimate.

if nintendo continues with supplies of 45k a week that will take a long ass time, which will hurt the IP's potential in the long run

it would be the biggest ball dropping ever if the game could have sold 3.5 million but ended with something like 700k less or worse because the hardware just wasn't there in time.

come Splatoon 2, if hardware isn't selling upwards from 80k per week for 4 or so weeks, I'd safely say nintendo dropped the ball hard.

and I am being conservative, it could easily sell more but let's go with the narrrative that "upping production takes time yaddayadda"

this, they need to ship 70-80k consoles per week after this month or they will waste the big potential of the game

That didn't happen, neither for Halo nor for niche games. The only time Xbox One came close to top is when preorders for it opened in Japan.
How can you be so sure when the chart update every hour? Are you saying that no niche game has never charted within the top 3 of the hourly chart on Amazon? Well, since there is no archive of it, i dont think it can be proven now either way. I'm pretty sure i've seen it at least. Shouldnt be too hard in certain cases, it could be a limited edition or something and if the orders in general of that one hour is low, i dont think it would take all that to get within the top 3 :) And with niche game, i was thinking of games that maybe can do 20k-30k.

I don't see notice that Splatoon 2 bundle is a limited release.

When Splatoon Wii U bundle launched it was almost impossible to find a standalone Wii U and Nintendo made the bundle the standard SKU. It's not very different with stock situation this time and it will be a big change at strategy in Japan if they follow a similar model so early.

How can you be so sure when the chart update every hour? Are you saying that no niche game has never charted within the top 3 of the hourly chart on Amazon?
Because nothing like this has happened every time I check them all these years and if it has it's the exception not the rule.
