So I wonder when Nintendo is going to respond to the pitiful Wii sales or do they just not care about Wii sales in Japan anymore since they are gearing up for the Cafe?

Dead or Alive Dimensions' sales leave me unconvinced that games like One Piece are going to be that huge. I am sure that OOT and Tales of the Abyss will be solid sellers, but it looks like it will be some time before we are seeing regular 100k debuts from the 3DS.

I don't think they can do much outside of price cuts now.

It's probably better to just fully invest in making the Cafe launch strongly at this point.

Poor Portal 2. Doesn't help that the Hong Kong version with full Japanese subtitles has been on the market for several weeks already (and usually cheaper to boot).

Did the PSP pass the PS1 LTD?
It's so strange that a console can do so differently in different areas... and it's mostly because of one single game.

Was Portal 2 a full localization, or just subtitles? I, for one would like to hear a Japanese Cave Johnson.

Going off EAJapan's youtube channel, it looks like English voice-overs with Japanese subtitles.

Shame about Portal 2. Sub-titles couldn't have helped, but Valve probably had realistic sales expectations and knew the extra sales from voice localization wouldn't offset the cost.

Yeah, it's so bizarre. Monster Hunter is like Pokemon/Mario-tier in Japan, but an obscure nothing title here. Is it the fault of Capcom USA's marketing team, the fact that we don't really give a shit about local multiplayer, that PSP gamers in the US tend to be older, or that most people here drive instead of take the subway? It's puzzling, and I bet Capcom is PISSED, all that potential money.

I think it's the core game design.

I imagine it's the same difference in taste that causes Call of Duty to not sell 2+ million copies in Japan.

LOL! Were you expecting Dead or Alive to sell 100k or something?

All things considered, I think it's doing great! Let's see where it goes from here.

I agree, it's probably in their best interests to focus completely on the Cafe launch. It's funny, I was thinking there were more graphic whores in the west than the Japan, but that doesn't seem to be the case (Unless the Wii is not selling for a different reason). But that's a discussion for another day.

Wut? What are you talking about? Here's what DoA usually sells in Japan (Famitsu numbers):

Fighting games:
DoA2 (PS2) - 158k
DoA3 (Xbox) - 84k
DoA:U (Xbox) - 52k
DoA4 (360) - 62k

Non-fighting games:
DoAXBV (Xbox) - 88k
DoAXBV2 (360) - 45k
DoA Paradise (PSP) - 31k

This is the worst result for a DoA game ever, and far worse than it has done on doomed platforms like Xbox and 360. Even a shitty (slutty?) non-fighting game fanservice garbage release on the PSP which was panned by everyone, had a better opening. :p

Huh, at this rate the PSP will overtake the 3DS in its launch year in about 4-6 weeks, though MML3:p and Tales of the Abyss should give it a very very nice bump.

Maybe a good parallel would be Darkstalkers for PSP. Like DOA:D, it was a compilation of earlier games in the series, was released at or near launch, and the series historically played second fiddle to Street Fighter just as DOA does to Tekken/Soul Calibur.

I can't find numbers though.

Damn, games sales are weak in Japan. :-(

I suspect neither of these will cause a bump. :-/

If the NGP is cross compatible with the PSP in terms of multiplayer then there could be a real smooth transition to the new hardware.

I'm still honestly not sure how or why it is so popular there because anyway you look at it the series and its gameplay is pretty 'hardcore'. I usually expect such games to have a strong but small following, not be the mega hit it is there. Glad to be wrong, of course.

I think so too... Speaking out of personal experience, I literally TRIED to like Monster Hunter. I wanted to love it because the concept and the visuals were very appealing to me, but it just didn't click. I couldn't bring myself to keep playing.

Monster hunter is a really strange animal. Having many relatives in Taiwan, a country very similar to Japan, MoHun is definitely NOT considered a hardcore game. The design is obviously hardcore, but I know so many people who are such casual gamers, but love MoHun.

Also, beaten by Akiba's Trip, you fail DoA 3DS.

Nintendo has yet to drop the price of the Wii in Japan, right? If so, I wonder why they would do so in EU and NA, but not in Japan? Not that I think it will do any good in Japan, but it certainly couldn't hurt at this point.

Man I thought hardware sales couldn't get lower than last week. Sad, sad times in Japan.

Also I believe this might be the first week that Pokemon Black/White has outsold Monster Hunter 3P. I thought maybe MH3P would eventually catch up :(

hmm, or you could compare DOA to previous DOA entries, also on launching platforms, and much less popular ones at that.

But 3DS is a whole new audience for the series, plus the game is a rehash for 3DS owners who are familiar with the series. No DOA has ever been released on Nintendo hardware until now. It would be like if Halo came out for NDS as was rumored and everyone compared its sales to Halo 3, a new game on a system with an established Halo fanbase.

The sales are indeed dreadful, but you can't just look at past games in the series. DOA3 came on a new system, but it was also a new game with (arguably) the best graphics of any game at the time. DOA:D is a retread.

lol, terrible DOAD numbers! What happened to that 40k estimate?

Like how 3DS is cross compatible with DS in terms of multiplayer?

Good stuff, including best of versions where is MHP2G at now? There was doubt about how MHF3 would do at full price and if people would wait until the best of release however that has not occurred, it's probably the second biggest franchise for Capcom behind only RE? 300 Hours poured into the game now. :)

The Wii is fucked in Japan now and has been for some time. It was winning the special Olympics by beating the PS3 however even that is not happening anymore, Cafe could not come any sooner for Nintendo.

No way will it do anywhere near 100K debut, but One piece is a whole different target zone then DOA, so give it the old wait and see, I will admit that is an utterly horrendous start for DOA

:It is looking very likely the ps3 will get a price cut soon(Amazon is selling it now at 15% off) what effect do you guys think that can have?

So the 3DS just passed 1 million units sold in Japan 3 months after launch, I thought I would take a look back at the DS data when it was at this stage to compare.

The DS phat had sold ~1.8 million units in Japan 3 months after launch but this was through the holiday season, although I have no idea how much Christmas and the New Year affect Japanese spending.
