Media Create Sales: Week 20, 2014 (May 12 - May 18)

Why is this question of the market being alive or dead still debated? It's clearly been dying for years now.

Why is the PS4 the gold standard in determining if the market is dead or not?

On the home console front, the PS4 is what 90% of third parties (what few home console titles they release) will rely on.

You didn't get it. 450k would be an amazing result but would demand a miracle.

When someone tries to make fun of the sales of a game using the sales of another he should know what that game trully sold.

hey, WOW, did Orochi sold that well on Wii U? GREAT I thought it sold something like 6k. Maybe it was its debut
FAKE EDIT: yes, indeed it was: 6.184
faith in Wii U third party sales: RESTORED.

Btw, probably in the west it sold something like 5k, so a total of 50k, that multiplied for 10 would mean 500K WW for Hyrule Warriors: it would be both a miracle and a disappointment

And, just to remind you: if I want to make fun of a game, no, I don't need to know exactly what it sold.
It's not a person I was making fun of, and it wasn't an insult

;)

What has Tropical Freeze done LTD again?

I don't know whether there's enough audience for games like Bayonetta or X to necessarily top that...

I somehow think that "core" games (such as bayonetta 2 or ProjectX could be considered, right?) will see a way smaller decreased compared to the mass-market/casual (DK is mass market, not casual, to me) games had from Wii to Wii U. What do you think?
If DK passed from 800K to 100K, I'd say that X could pass from 190k to something like 130K
Maybe I'm wrong, of course. But I hope it is so, and Nintendo realize that with the current Wii U fanbase maybe it's better to drop Wii Music U and go ahead with..don't know...Starfox?

the point is : tell me when the last FULL game for PS4 was released

answer : Natural Doctrine, one month ago

oh my gosh, that's incredible, not a single PS4 game in top30 after 4 weeks since a multiplatform release !!!!!!!!!1111

if only Sony kept Knack bundled as Nintendo is doing with New Mario and Wii Party.........

03./00. [PS4] Final Fantasy XIV Online: A Real Reborn # <RPG> (Square Enix) {2014.04.14} (¥3.394) - 31.326 / NEW <52,96%>
It was released on April 14th, while the last full game Nintendo released was more recent
06./00. [WIU] Famicom Remix 1+2 <ETC> (Nintendo) {2014.04.24} (¥3.086) - 11.079 / NEW
on April 24th

Not that big difference. And it seems that in the chart there are not only New Mario and Party, bundled, but also Mario3DWorkld and the aformentioned Famicon remix (wait: there is also SONIC ALL STAR, but this is brand new, so you get a point for that)

I mean. there are plenty of reasons to blame the Wii U, but there's nothing strange in saying that Mario could have better legs than other "core" titles released for PS4, to me.

guys, there's like no PS4 games out in Japan.

Those are pretty good numbers to me.

I've been pretty optimistic in regards of PS4 Japanese sales, in the environment of the home market, but I think that the "no games" or "spare release of games" is something that is valid also for the Wii U for example. So, the lack of games is the actual problem, as other was pointing out in the past few pages, looking at the "portable" but especially "mobile" shifting of third party resources

What is this argument about?

PS4 has no games?

PS4 has no games that sell?

I don't get it what's the point in pointing that out.

the first one you said

so i don't understand the statement "hey look, Wii U has more title in top30 than PS4" when the #30 place is just 2k, PS4 is more than one month that doesn't have new releases and 2 of those 5 Wii U games in the chart are bundled with the console

if PS4 should have had a couple of titles released in the past 30 days like Wii U had, I could understand those statement, but not in the actual situation

PS4 is selling 6k a week without any release, in the same way Wii U sold 6k when no games were released
if this week PS4 sells just 6k or less with a new release, ok, that should not be very good

Is there an article somewhere that explains why console gaming has cratered so significantly in Japan? Has disposable income dwindled at all?

“In Japan, the software market has been shrinking for the past few years and the North American market, which used to experience significant growth year after year, is seeing a slowing of that trend. “

(2004 Nintendo Annual Report)

Japan peaked in the late '90s ... Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Resident Evil, Tekken, etc. were HUGE. Their industry is stuck in a vicious cycle since 2000/01.

Declining software sales and rising game development costs -> lower profitability, higher risk -> less games, less innovation, more sequels -> consumers lose interest -> decling software sales ... ->

Third parties are switching to mobile. The worst case scenario in JP :

NDS > (3DS + PSV) -> almost guaranteed at this point

PS3 > (PS4 + Wii U + XBO)

Keep in mind that the PS3 is aging well in Japan. A price cut will help the platform. And to be honest, Sony has no choice. The alternative is the complete collapse of the PlayStation business in Japan long before FF XV is ready. It would be “commercial suicide".

 SRP ¥25,693 ¥15,000

I still thinking that this gen is going to sell a lot worse than the past gen globally. (Even with the great start of the PS4 and XBOne). :(

Depends on the PS360 performance in the emerging markets. They need to open up new markets for their successors over the next few years.

PS360 already outsold the previous generation of PS and Xbox in NA and Western Europe. That said, PS360 is way behind the previous generation in the rest of the world. We need cheaper versions of PS360.

A market contraction in the rest of the world during the PS360 era would be totally unacceptable. And a huge problem. You don't want to depend on the US or JP to spur growth.

Overplaying the cross-gen nature of those titles is folly. The point of these systems is as upgrades to the latter systems. They're not competing for the same market of late adopters, they're competing for the business of people who bought systems at the beginning of last cycle and are ready to adopt a new cycle.

Sorry but I can't stop laughing every time I see this.

PlayStation software sales reached 90 million units in Q1 2014. The PS4 was responsible for 10 million units.

People are gaming on PS3: same game with worse graphics at no additional cost (they already have a PS3)

Longtime PS1 owners didn't have a choice in 2001 (They had already played the best PS1 games and MGS/FF/GTA/GT/J&D/SH/Onimusha were PS2 exclusives).

That explains why the PS2 sales went off into the stratosphere in 2001 while PS4 sales are starting to resemble to PS3 Fat sales (at 399). And things could get worse after the Kinectless XBO launch.

if only Sony kept Knack bundled as Nintendo is doing with New Mario and Wii Party.........

Like Aostia already pointed out most of the WiiU games have been launched a few weeks, months ago or even last year like the not bundled SM3D that charted in this weeks Media Create Top20. It´s really weird that you completely ignore the fact that there actually are the same amount of games that aren´t in any form bundled. Also since you already mentioned Knack I want to point out that there is a difference.

Knack was bundled with every single PS4 in its first few weeks and also at no additional cost. There was simply no choice to avoid this game. And as it seems they are completely ignoring it since.

WiiU bundles are quite a different story. You always had the chance to avoid them. They are more expensive than other SKUs. With the WiiFit bundle beeing the most expensive one. A few weeks ago they launched a new cheaper SKU with a different game. Looking at the charts they obviously chose the more expensive SKU, because they actually are interested in the games.

I doubt many would pay a premium to have Knack to be honest, consumers are lucky enough to not suffer shortages and forced into buying arbitrary bundles from retailers.

The platform with 80M shipped sold more software than the platform with a tenth of that... shock, horror?
EDIT: I'm not even sure where these numbers are coming from. Sony only reported 24M in software sales in the last quarter. Or alternatively 24B yen, as it's unclear.

Some people are still gaming on PS3. I'm personally still gaming on PS3.
What's your point?
How does that change that some other people are buying new systems to play the software that's currently out on them.

Why are you comparing PS3 2008 to PS4 2014? Do you think a system two years past the point of transition, three years when one includes that the generation started a year before the PS3's release, is comparable to a system 6 months into transition?

I like some other people are trying to figure out mpl90's ("preorder"?) posts. I presumed that it is comparison to before MKWii and MK7 was released. But looking at the other titles that it seems to be not the case. :/

Edit: MK8 was behind MK7 the last time I saw preorder pts posted.

It's split up in sections it shows a new games current pre-order rankings and rankings of previous games in the series or similar series at the same number of weeks before release. E.g Mario kart, SMT and Vanguard etc.

It's easy. Each upcoming title's preorders are compared with the ones of those from the same series / sharing lots of elements (example: Persona Q compared also with Etrian Odyssey), all at the same distance from release (example: MKWii, MK7 and MK8 listed preorders are all 6 days before their respective releases).

@prodigy: It's possible, MK7 accelerated in the final days, but MK8 could still obtain to not fall behind, given how much pts it got during last weekend. Let's see how this is going to end.

Naah, it was about time PSP version of WE started not being that good at day one. It's still possible for it to sell not so badly in the weekend: its price is preeeetty low (3,067 Yen). Still wondering why there's no Vita version yet, despite Vita having baseball titles, seriously.

I wouldn't be surprised, honestly.
It would be pretty damn good to see a debut in line with MK7, considering how the two consoles have been seen differently so far in Japan.

No WE Vita or Powerpro 3DS just one of the many illogical mysteries with modern day Konami. It's like they got it backwards.

There was a time where they had the console series, the Portable series for PSP, and a specific series for Nintendo handhelds (first GBA, then DS). Now, PSP and Vita get the same release as PS3, and the Nintendo sub-series got canned...why? Why there's no Pawapuro for 3DS, it's as backwards as no WE Vita.

Thinking about it, did Konami already announce the new Pawapuro?

Let's be real here, Konami probably should've released a Love Plus on Vita too lol
I'd agree if they hadn't already effectively killed that franchise - though I guess bringing it on another platform with a heavy Otaku niche presence might have done it some good.

I don't remember MK7 getting its torrent of hype and coverage (embargo ending, review scores, etc) as far before launch as MK8. If that's the case, it wouldn't be a big surprise for MK7 to overtake MK8 in the final days. It did after all launch into a much larger installed base.

MK8 will obviously do fine relative to the Wii U performance, it won't be even close to MK7's LTD though. Wii U is not healthy enough to sustain that kind of legs.

How much are we expecting X to do?

I'm guessing 200K max. A range of 100K-125K LTD is probably more realistic.

LTD could be between 150-300k.

people have high expectation for X.

PS3 was tracking behind GameCube for years. See how that turned out. With WiiU tracking like GameCube and having even less third party support I really don't see how it's going to sell that much more (4 million). It's living with only Nintendo games just like GameCube. Now do you really believe there will be drop from 10 million to less than 4 million with PS3->PS4 transition?

If we can see drop from 12.6 mil to 4 mil with Wii to Wii U transition, why can't we believe there would be a similar but smaller drop with PS3 -> PS4?

Not trying to guess the drops of each system, I think it is very safe to expect drops similar of even greater for 7th to 8th gen consoles than for 7th to 8th gen portables. That is, even the "winner" is losing significantly compared to the last gen.

hey, WOW, did Orochi sold that well on Wii U? GREAT I thought it sold something like 6k. Maybe it was its debut
FAKE EDIT: yes, indeed it was: 6.184
faith in Wii U third party sales: RESTORED.

Btw, probably in the west it sold something like 5k, so a total of 50k, that multiplied for 10 would mean 500K WW for Hyrule Warriors: it would be both a miracle and a disappointment

And, just to remind you: if I want to make fun of a game, no, I don't need to know exactly what it sold.
It's not a person I was making fun of, and it wasn't an insult

;)

I don't think you understand what exactly you are arguing anymore. You are guessing again for western sales without having any idea if it sold 5k or 50k.

The platform with 80M shipped sold more software than the platform with a tenth of that... shock, horror?

Funny you are saying that now when you used to say the Japanese WiiU install base "wasn't an excuse" for poor Japanese WiiU software sales lol...

Am I imagining things here or is Mario Kart 8 about to fall behind?

Console with a much lower install base sells less software at games launch. Shock, Horror?

Because Wii was complete outlier with the appeal of motion controls. Now Nintendo is just going back to GC era. No gimmick to drive sales and completely relying on first party titles. PS4 on the other hand is pretty much following exactly same strategy as PS3 in japan. Of course anything could happen but I have just hard time to believe that system that will have almost all biggest Japanese third party titles and growing western games will sell 4 million ltd in Japan. There could be drop from PS3 (and it is actually very likely) but from 10 million to 4 million? Noope.

It really depends on how long the PS4 is selling before we get the next system or whatever. For a large portion of the PS3's life, mobile wasn't really relevant in Japan. Now it is. At the very least, the PS4 will sell pretty terribly this year. The question is when would titles that could pick up Japanese PS4 hardware sales actually come into play? Even the PS3 wasn't much above 4m after 4 years there, so I could see the PS4 in a similar state sadly. Sure eventually it may climb to 6-7m at that pace, but it's still pretty bad.

I agree it will be slow and this whole home console generation will be pretty fucking sad in Japan barring some miracle but I just really don't see a scenario where PS4 will sell less than 4 million ltd and WiiU outsels it. Really what there is left after Smash to drive WiiU sales next year? I really can't think anything.

Since nuance is apparently beyond you.

Cross-platform games (if we're referring to the likes of ACIV) have sold well on the 7th gen HD platforms because there's a conducive audience for those titles within the installed base.
Cross-platform games have also sold well on the 8th gen MS and Sony platforms because there's a conducive audience for those titles within the installed base.
These games have sold better on the last gen platforms, due to the relative sizes of the installed bases.
But around a third of US ACIV sales in 2013 were on the new combined installed base of 3.8M, rather than the old combined installed base of 67M.

Cross-platform games have not sold well on the 8th gen Nintendo platform because there isn't a conducive audience.
This is despite at the time having a larger installed base than the other two 8th gen platforms.

If you're looking at sales of software on an early life platform, you look at absolute numbers and attach rates in unison to get a good picture. Because yes, smaller installed bases are going to be a limiting factor.
The Wii U has never been promising with regard to either, in terms of these titles.

It's not an "excuse" for poor sales. Poor sales are poor sales. The PS4 and XBO aren't experiencing those if we're talking globally.

Their software sales are rising as last gen declines despite the relative installed base size. Because installed base is nothing without an active audience within it.

One piece went from 800k+ to 400k+. One piece is insanely popular in Japan but iirc the first game was not good.

DW fan base (whats left of them) are also on PS and Zelda has been reduced to a 300k on Wii.

Now a DW Zelda game on WiiU.....yeah

We've been through this a lot of times, second Zelda on the same console and requiring an addon, Majora also sold considerably less than its predecessor. The next installment recovered somewhat:

Code:
N64 1998-11-21 3343 The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time Nintendo 0 1,143,570
N64 2000-04-27 3368 The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask Nintendo 0 601,542
GCN 2002-12-13 904 The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Nintendo 6800 742,609
Wii 2006-12-02 87 The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Nintendo 6800 552,476
Wii 2011-11-23 5333 The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Nintendo 6800 297,441

And if you're citing game quality influencing the sales of the next game, it bears mentioning that SS was very well received by the people who played it. It made the Top 10 all time Nintendo games voted by Famitsu readers and very few recent games managed to do that, it was full of older titles for the most part.

The first Musou game on Wii U also showed nice legs if it could go from 6k fw to 45k ltd.

The Zelda decline is also very similar to the PS family one. Every PS system after PS2 sold less than its predecessor:

PS4 < Vita < PS3 < PSP < PS2

Granted, PSP was close to PS2 and Vita is tracking close to PS3 and could possibly even outsell it (unlikely though). PS4 is also very early in its life. But launch aligned, so far the decline is evident and very similar to Zelda. One steep fall and then minor decreases with each new installment.

All I'm seeing is Zelda going from a million seller to sub 300k. In fact it declined from GCN --> Wii so I don't see this recovery at all.

Handheld Zelda is also declining.
