The Japanese number is physical sales only (edit: also doesn't include used games, peripherals, or PC I believe), hardly seems a fair comparison. Also have to take exchange rate into comparison, the Japanese yen has been falling the last couple years. In 2013 for example, 369 billion yen might have gotten you £2.4 billion while today it wouldn't even get you £2 billion

Good points. Kind of hard to compare then because I also feel that it's wrong to take digital out of UKs numbers as digital presents pretty big part of the deticated market nowadays in western countries. Well even just retail + hardware is pretty close between the two and considering the direction Japan is heading this year (PS4 is only console with chance to be up yoy and even that will not be much) UK should overtake Japan this year even if you count just retail sales of sw and hw.

^^ Wow that's a fantastic retail/digital ratio for Bloodborne.

Makes sense when you remember the reports about stock problems.

I'm afraid I don't understand... I was comparing the japanese sales and marketing power of both games. Unless you are implying that the western hype of the Witcher 3 contributed to the sales in Japan. That's an interesting point of view.

Other than that, I was indeed implying since the beginning that XenoX was marketed essentially for a core audience (when Splatoon for example is going for a mass market) and on that front I don't know how Nintendo could have shown more of the game and hype it more than it dit o_O

Yeah, I'm not completely crazy. If someone tells me that The Witcher 3 had the same level of awareness in Japan that XenoX, something's wrong. I could even remind that XenoX was released at the beginning of the so-called Golden Week. A "smart decision" if we believe Siliconera at that time, who wanted to believe that the game would have legs, eh.

Oddly I suspect that for Witcher 3, the Western hype likely did contribute to its success in Japan, at least with the demographic who are likely to enjoy Western games, in the same way really positive word of mouth from Japan on a JRPG might help it among Westerners who enjoy that sort of game. But in both cases you have very specific markets, Western niche JRPG fans and Japanese fans of Western games, who probably actively seek out information on their favored products. What seems to have happened now in Japan is that the domestic market has shrunk to such a degree that this group suddenly makes up a not insubstantial portion of the hardcore audience meaning that the 70K sold by the Witcher 3 actually looks relatively impressive, whereas similar openings for 360 games were disappointing.

That said, I am not sure this audience was ever available for Xenoblade X even if the game might actually have appeal to that audience, since there is even less reason WRPG/Open World fans in Japan to own a WiiU than there is in the West. Which ultimately is where I think Xenoblade X's problem lies. There is a chicken and an egg problem. The game's audience is elsewhere, but it is precisely in order to attract people who wouldn't buy a WiiU that Nintendo backed the game in the first place. My suspicion is not that Xenoblade X's media campaign failed/will fail, but merely that while it succeeded in impressing people and creating interest in the game, it had the hopeless task of convincing people who have no interest in the rest of the WiiU's lineup to buy a console for one game. And that was never going to be easy.

I'm legit curious about its digita numbers, especially considering how it was available for months as pre-load. Not expecting anything amazing, but still quite curious about that.

I'm actually expecting a 4-6K range on digital.

Anyone know the last time we didn't have a PS3 chart on Media Create's top 20?

Edit: nvm, that happened like 2 weeks ago.

Splatoon caps out at 147 points, eh

also damn this Comgnet archive doesn't really update recent ones quickly, does it

Gained five points huh?
COMG ranking of May 26, 2015

01. [3DS] Youkai Watch Busters (combined) - 308pt
02. [PSV] Kan Colle (combined) - 150pt
03. [3DS] Fire Emblem if (combined) - 146pt
04. [WiiU] Splatoon - 142pt

I'm guessing 130-150k launch.

I'm kinda reserved about using Comgnet for sales predictions.
I would already be happy to see Splatoon do around 100K
Glad for dev team if it does better of course

Square-Enix -> Outline of Results Briefing held on May 12, 2015

I'll just quote this:

All 3 sub-segments, which are HD Games, MMO, Games for Smart Devices/PC browser, did well. Although we did not release major HD titles in FY2015/3, mid-sized titles did well, including “FINAL FANTASY TYPE-0 HD,” “KINGDOM HEARTS - HD 2.5 REMIX –,” and “DRAGON QUEST HEROES,”

Repeat sales of previous titles, mainly download sales of full-length games, were strong in the West. MMO, which mainly consists of “FINAL FANTASY XIV,” and “DRAGON QUEST X,” both did well in their operations. “FINAL FANTASY XIV,” was launched in August 2013, so this is the title’s first full-year contribution.

In Smart Devices & PC Browser Games, etc., “SENGOKU IXA” continued to do well, while the 4 titles of “DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS SUPER LIGHT,” “SCHOOLGIRL STRIKERS,” “Kai-ri-Sei Million Arthur,” and “FINAL FANTASY RECORD KEEPER,” (a collaboration title with DeNA), are constantly achieving high rankings to make a big contribution.

Japan is truly dead, nothing left to save.

Yeah, shut it down already. Let's discontinue all of the dedicated consoles and handhelds; I don't even know why Japanese games are being made anymore. They don't care about video games there, all of those studios should just close down or focus solely on mobile.

The ship has pretty much sailed at this point.

Most of the major traditional publishers are starting to have some good mobile success, so there's no reason for them to do a massive reinvestment in dedicated games to the extent it would take to majorly revive things.

Unless you just mean what will it take to be better than this week, in which case you need some relevant software and it will go up a bit.

Man, it's strange when it comes to what sells between Japan and literally the rest of the world.

I guess China a little bit too.

But I look at what kind of games are popular over there, and it's like I'm looking into some parallel dimension.

Can't wait for this week's first-day report. There's quite a few games that came out this week, including some interesting ones.

Bet you anything Downtown Nekketsu Jidaigeki has either really low sellthrough or is in the "rabbids" category.

Don't you get an automatic down' pas for it? I sure did.

4 millions seems super low

The automatic thing isn't actually the game, it's an ad for the game. You still need to instigate the download yourself. At least, that was the case in Europe, I'm assuming the same was true in Japan.

Yeah, shut it down already. Let's discontinue all of the dedicated consoles and handhelds; I don't even know why Japanese games are being made anymore. They don't care about video games there, all of those studios should just close down or focus solely on mobile.

Is it really that bad? Are they approaching Atari 1983 levels? Is there a landfill in a Japanese desert town they can dump their dedicated consoles in? I'll be depressed if this truly is the end of an era. I hope the industry recovers.

I'm pretty sure Flux is being sarcastic... No, it's not as bad as Atari 1983 levels at all for dedicated devices.
