Media Create Sales: Week 21, 2017 (May 22 - May 28)

They should really make some animated shorts with the ARMS characters because they are the type of characters that can be marketable.

Their designs oozes with personality.

I feel like pedigree and a tad of curiosity/gimmick-novelty alone will prop up ARMS. Unlike most traditional fighters, there's a very easy splashdown point for younger audiences or parents or just more casual players to go in and "flail" or the less competitive modes like basketball and volleyball, there's enough meat to the bone for more than just the usual fighter demographics (even though the game itself does come off as a thin around the core with its more straightforward single-player offerings).

Here I am speaking strictly for Japan, in the west this will still be a factor but as you say fighters in general are trending on healthier numbers.

I don't think its going to go gangbusters out of the door if even ever, but the team pedigree will beget a pretty healthy marketing budget which should keep it from "bomb" territory just on sheer exposure-v-probability of sales conversion.

I suspect, westwardly speaking, that ARMS will see some knocks on it from the thinner single-player offering, especially when compared to peers like Injustice 2 or MKXL. Certainly, it will probably look good compared to SFV but then a polished slab of metal would also look good compared to SFV.

I agree with you.
Once more kids have Switches in Japan the game will do fine. Its very accessible due to motion control, it provides multiplayer on the go and aesthetically it looks very good on undocked mode.
There are free updates that are planned for the foreseeable future. So even if the opening is underwhelming it could be a game that has legs.

Once big releases like Splatoon 2 and MHXX launch in the summer vacation and younger audience buys into the Switch MK8D, BotW, Minecraft and Arms should all see a decent boost. It's just a matter of Nintendo resolving the stock issues by than.

This actually is a great idea. A 2 minute animated video like Kid icarus is going to sell this product even more.

Yeah seriously ARMS really need an animated video of the characters.

The characters are the biggest appeal and anything animated would sell these characters even further.

Heck it can even be in Mechanica's pov since she's a fan. I really hope Nintendo tries to capitalize the characters more than just official art.

No interesting comments from Tsutaya about last week's sales at their store?

I know Nintendo had Pokemon last year but I think they should be able to sell comfortably more SW for the rest of this year considering what's left to release (depending on how much HW they can ship).

The usual Switch stock situation site is reporting that Amazon.jp will re-open Switch orders as Arms Bundle Set (exclusive on Amazon.jp) on Friday 15th of June, in order to deliver them the 16th.

https://www.amazon.co.jp/b/ref=as_li_ss_tl?node=5307736051

Probably the rest of retailers will recieve more Switch units by the same date.
That's what should be expected.
Have amazon been retailing any units themselves the past week(s) or have they been saving units for ARMS?

I wonder how Shiin has sold. Exp. pres was saying it was sold out on Twitter, but it doesn't seem to have shifted that much.

Still, for a company like them, 10k shipment would probably be a lot.

Then ARMS release time will indeed receive bigger shipments. Interested in seeing the effect on ARMS, 1-2 Switch, Zelda and Bombaman sales number that time.

I know fighting games aren't in a great place in Japan but I feel this title is a little different. It's a major release from Nintendo and one of their first for the switch. They also seem to be putting their weight behind it both with the test punches and the marketing push. The switch has a lot of hype around it and is moving SW well. Considering how little SW has been released so far you would think a title like this would do OK. I'm not expecting a breakout hit but 35K is very low.

Ah, sorry for not being more specific, i was only referring to the last part about being aimed more towards the western market :)

Does anyone know the preorder number on COMG.net for Splatoon the day before it launched? Interested to see how far off ARMS is still.

Also. Splatoon 2 had a crazy weekend

Yep,
DQXI combined total is only 54pts ahead of Splatoon 2 on COMG. So the lead has been cut by over 30pts since the 26th of May

Obviously DQ launches a bit later but considering the difference in potential owners of the different systems it's very noteworthy that Splatoon 2 preorders are not only keeping up but catching up to DQXI.

It's just a matter of Nintendo supplying enough hardware to satisfy demand for the Splatoon 2 launch and beyond.

Splatoon 2 with 29p and 27p days. bringing it to 579 points vs DQ 3ds 304 ps4 329
and that's without a test fire going on and the focus being more on ARMS for now.
Yeah it's pretty crazy. The lack of Switch hardware will sadly hold it back though.

to be honest. I'm more glad to see ARMS at least moved up a few points.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
Applying the usual caveats before wading too deeply into comgnet, I do wonder if the Splatoon 2 insanity is eating into other Switch software, at least as far as preorders go (again, at least at comgnet). ARMS still very low, MH XX not charting yet. Meanwhile Splatoon 2 adding almost a 100 a week.

for comparison
with 12 days to go
ARMS 32
Splatoon 1 : 52
but yeah. still some time left

Also. Splatoon 2 had a crazy weekend

What were the comparative install bases at those points?

It strikes me that - in general - I'm not going to preorder software if I don't already have the guarantee of having the system at the point of release - there's not likely to be a shortage on the software front, and I don't particularly want to be left with a chance to purchase a game I can't actually play!

(Of course, Splatoon 2 somewhat defies that theory. Hmmm.)

For those who are buying Switch for Splatoon 2 it's definitely a factor. I personally think a decent amount of the potential owners of Splatoon 2 are not going to bother with other games and just spend thousands of hours playing as squids.
Much like people have been spending thousands of hours on other competitive multiplayer games like Dota 2/Counter Strike/Star Craft/League of Legends etc in the last decade. It's just a game like this has not really caught on in Japan mainly because the lack of console/PC games that are truly competitive while also appealing to the main demographic of people buying dedicated gaming devices in Japan.
Now with Nintendo pushing Splatoon as Japan's first mainstream eSport and the game being on the preferred type of device Japanese use(portable), there is very little holding the game back.

With Spectator mode it's also a game that will become even bigger online - right now if you scroll through YouTube for the last month there is 18,400 results for スプラトゥーン, the audience will exponentially grow as people spectate and edit videos together. Tournaments will become something fairly easy to organize compared to having to organize a tournament with 8 Wii Us.

As I've said previously there is going to be parks filled with kids playing Splatoon 2 this summer vacation in Japan - some organized by Nintendo others will happen organically. Switch is simply a great platform and I feel the Splatoon dev team is very forward thinking.

Saint Titanfall
If the stars rumour being Switch only is correct Nintendo has managed to completely lock down this year in Japan. The only weak link would be their supply chain.

We should wait for tomorrow before starting saying "18 millions aren't enough, everyone!". Certainly, this could be the right time to see whether Eurogamer was correct or not. I hope for them they're right; I can't imagine the rage from several fans if it turns out to be a 3DS-only game.
