Media Create Sales: Week 22, 2014 (May 26 - Jun 01)

Time for Nintendo to start grabbing some western devs, open some western studios and stop developing everything with only Japan in mind.

Just to support your statement: Monster Hunter started on homeconsoles. Monster Hunter 1 and 2 were on the PS2 but the franchise took off with Portable 2nd on the PSP and has sold a vastly superior amount of units on handhelds since then.

I like this way of putting it:

Monster Hunter the game started on consoles.
Monster Hunter the phenomenon started on handhelds.

Other than Mario Kart and Yokai Watch (fuck yeah), those are some scary numbers. Japan needs Persona 5 and single-player Dragon Quest asap.

Everyone needs Persona 5, not just Japan.

Yeah if Persona 5 can enter Tales/Yakuza tier and do >500k, that would be a HUGE success for Atlus.

It would also make its way to the very short list of titles that have grown since the PS1 era and probably the only jrpg that has grown since its PS1 debut.

Gibson again:

WiiU hardware sales in Japan jumped by 10k because of MK8 which is +116%, but Nintendo says it takes 4-6weeks for software to drive hardware

when I say "Nintendo says" I mean they have said that in prior investor briefings or told us and we have published as such.

Maybe they mean to see whether there's a sustained uptick...

Because that seems a strange claim, unless you're referring to some sort of sleeper hit.

Unless there's a sustained output of titles, it's rather silly to expect that a single new title will continue to drive up hardware sales for 2 months. I could see it working if there were a number of major upcoming titles releasing every 2-3 weeks, but that's not the case at all. The next big title on the WiiU won't either be out until the end of the year, and beyond that there has been -nothing- announced. Truly dire.

When do you think there will be less fragmentation and what would cause this? In this generation we're ending up with the same amount of systems as we saw last gen (3DS replaces DS, WiiU replaces Wii, PS4 replaces PS4, Vita replaces PSP and Xbox One replaces Xbox 360).

I already pointed it out in the post you quoted, basically the shrinking importance of the older systems. Right now last gen systems are still using up development resources and fighting for customers attention, best example PS3 outsold PS4 this week. PSP is on its last legs, Sonys announcement a few days ago is the confirmation. And also PS3 won´t be supported forever. Both will free some resources in future. It remains to be seen what happens with PSV but its current sales trajectory isn´t promising.

Based on his post history, presumably he expects SCE to die and Nintendo to inherit every ounce of their support. Microsoft's platforms don't even register.

Based on your post history it´s no surprise that you got very defensive. This is still no reason to distort my argument. I´m not talking about SCE but specifically about the Japanese market. The reason you resorted in silly accusation instead of disproving my point is quite obvious. A simple look at the hardware sales is enough confirmation.

Pretty reasonable sale numbers for MK8 compared to others in the series, Japan confirmed to like the Luigi death stare.

I really don't see how the reduction in the number of platforms somehow saves the market.

Does the discontinuation of the PSP stop people from buying Galaxy phones and make GungHo implode?

That's a reasonably high proportion for digital sales.

I'm wondering if Nintendo is including those in their 1.2M.
Wii U and Japan saved. :p

If only Nintendo had a worthwhile online infrastructure and account system, they could have much joy from DD sales.

I'll repost what I posted on the tail end of last week's MC thread:

I still stand by it.

£199.99 Premium WiiU + £29.99 games...

Truly dire.

If only Iwata hadn't drag everything back to NCL and instead got NoA & NoE to grow and help with software output by making them "fill in the blanks". Hell, even remakes will do. :<

Wonder why MK8 has so many low ratings on Amazon JP.

Some seem to be disappointed that its luck based (?) and not as difficult as they wanted it to be.......I dunno seems like they've lost a lot online lol

Amazon reviews are usually quite helpful. Those Demon Souls reviews for instance were incredibly positive.

Those DQIX reviews were fun. looool

...or those for FFXII. Usually it's until muuuuuch later that you get any kind of real info on the games (of which by then you're better served elsewhere). Most of the reviews are just knee jerk trolling about the most superficial of things

But it's just not the same without the cheesy scenery videos!

Hopefully whenever they put out the PS4 app, they'll get rid of the hardware region lock. The Vita version works on US Vitas :(

you know you can select cheesy scenery videos, right? though i don't blame you for missing it in the arcane menu system...

Some pictures from Persona Q launch day :

Shinjuku - Yodobashi

Shibuya - Tsutaya

The game has its own space, but Mario Kart 8 is still huge advertised.
In Tsutaya the main space used for promoting game still has MK8, in Yodobashi I was very surprised to see P:Q not advertised as much as the other shops I visited, and Yodobashi has one floor entirely used for Nintendo platforms.
Not so much people, it was right after lunch, but I noticed some empty spaces in both Tsutaya and Sofmap place used to stock P:Q

But if you really want to see what people are waiting for...

They are two years too late to the PS3 party for that as software sales on PS3 started to slow down

This will be the first Persona game on the PS3 that Persona fans have been anticipating for over 5 years. The fan base is also quite dedicated.

Now if we're talking about the West then I would agree. With the PS4 doing so well and last gen not so, I think its something Atlus should look into. Though, as said previously, the fanbase is dedicated and been waiting long time so it may not loose many sales.

Wow, I expected at least over 60.000 in hardware sales, guess most people who are interested in MK8 already have a Wii U. The PS4 doesn't really have any games, even western ones are rare and almost no indie games, so I'm not surprised by those numbers.

Sure, but i was wondering where you think the support will move to. When you said that the PS4 was deadweight and it seems that PSV is soon to follow, i understood this as you ment that these systems wouldnt get much software support in the future, but maybe that isnt what you ment.

It seems you have a problem with how I described the current situation of both systems. How would you call their situation?

Hm.. what makes you think that i have a problem with what you said about those system? Even if i would disagree with what you're saying about those system, i wouldnt have any problem with what you're saying about them. I mean, there is no denying that the PS4 is selling very low at the moment and that few games are announced for it from japanese publishers, the numbers dont lie. And Vita's upcoming situation is anyone's guess (although i havnt seen any noticeably drop in software support for the Vita during the last 6 months or so). But what i think about this isnt really that important in this case. I was asking you where you think the support will go since you think it would be less fragmentation. If the PS3 and PSP support is going away (as it indeed is), and the PS4 and the Vita wont get much support like you say(?), that only leaves the 3DS and the WiiU. Are you saying that the 3DS and/or the WiiU will get almost all software support in the future? I'm just wondering what your thoughts are regarding where the support will go that will/could lead to less fragmentation.

EDIT: Well, there is also the Xbox One, but i guess its already safe to assume that this system wont sell much in Japan, nor get much software support from japanse publishers.

Media Create sellthrough for Mario Kart 8 is 80,90%. That makes 403k shipped first week.

When that blog talked about 400k first week sales, it seems he was talking about shipment and no possible sales. Since the source of that blog is almost confirmed Media Create.

I'm pretty sure a good portion of that support would probably just go to mobile...

I'm pretty sure it's plain to everybody with eyes that's* where support (entailing not just established franchises, but development resources towards new products) is going.

It's fantasy to think that Japan is going to become some Nintendo third-party wonderland in the event the PS4 continues to trudge in the shallows for the generation.

*EDIT: mobile ecosystems

He was talking about sales (based on the quote). In other words he thought it might sell out (based on what we now know was the shipment).

Indeed. There are major Japanese developed titles with western appeal that will release on PS4. Those alone will be enough to get the PS4 out of the doldrums, whether or not it will be enough for it to be successful and attract other third parties into the ecosystem remains to be seen though. Games like FF could sell 2m on a 4m installed base and just have a very high attach rate with hardcore gamers leaving little to no room for non-major titles.

The difficult part for Sony is that it is out of their hands, they do not have any major internal cards to play to revitalise the PS4 in Japan. Hot Shots Golf will only take them so far, and really they need it out this holiday season with a massive promotion to try and get at least some people back on board. GT is dead in Japan, they have no internal RPG studios, third parties are happy releasing on PS3 (see Persona) and Japan Studio is still a pile of wank.

Just wanna add that "PlayStation" is also commonly shortened to "pure sute" (PlaSta) in Japan, so you might hear people say "pure sute fo-" instead of "pii esu fo-".
