the real loser here is mario party 10. looks like the franchise might be seriously done in japan at this point, at least as a reliable tentpole in a release schedule (like it is in america).

splatoon did fine for what it was.

150k still seems decent for WiiU's userbase. Considering how bad the recent entry was and how fast they seemed to develop it, I'd call it a modest *relative* success for WiiU.

Although it's definitely time to do the MP1-3 anthology HD remake with online.

I can't say I'm surprised or even disappointed, at this point. Hudson (now nd Cube) and Nintendo really went out of their way to give people Mario Party fatigue and playing with the formula as much as they have didn't exactly give anyone a reason to be excited. To the people who complain about annualized franchise releases? Here is your prime example of exactly what happens.

I'm pretty sure it's done now.

the series hasn't been truly annualized since 2005.

1999 - mario party
2000 - mario party 2
2001 - mario party 3
2002 - mario party 4
2003 - mario party 5
2004 - mario party 6
2005 - mario party advance, mario party 7
2007 - mario party ds
2008 - mario party 8
2012 - mario party 9
2013 - mario party island tour
2015 - mario party 10

wii party and wii party u kind of fill in the gaps in 2010 and 2013. the handhelds have gotten just one mario party each since the gba so i'm not sure if they really count towards mario party fatigue. part of the loss of the fanbase might be attributed to the lack of releases between 8 and 9. four years is a fairly long time to kind of let the series sit, especially when 8 did pretty well.

When the absolutely miserable Mario Party Island Tour managed 500K, I kind of wonder whether that game's reputation hurt Mario Party 10 in any way. I do agree MP10 completely underperformed in JP thus far, but hopefully the legs help it limp across 200-250K eventually. In addition, anecdotally, a good friend of mine is a HUGE Mario Party fan, and she told me and my friends to stay away from 10. It seems like the minigames are fun, but the rest of the game just sucks (boards, modes, etc.).

Interesting about Splatoon being sold out still. Did DB Heroes have something to get people to buy it this week all of a sudden? Hype for Dragon Ball Super or something?

By that point, the damage was already done. Mario Party 8 did as well as it did because most of the Wii audience had never played a Mario Party game. By 2012, it trended back to where the series was destined to go after being squeezed dry on N64 and Gamecube.

Nice to see Splatoon keeping hot at its 2nd week. Should reach 200k in 3 weeks. Could be a nice bundled game to replace Mario Kart 8 and others for the holidays if it keeps its popularity.

Splatoon did nice so now too see what kind of legs it has.

That's pretty bad for Stella Glow. The new Luminous Arc will probably outsell it several times over.

I don't think the Luminous Arc series is popular enough to do that. Though at this point its basically a new series again I guess.

Vinnk's Village?

1. Splatoon sold out or in short supply at the local game stores. But still available at the department stores.

2. Aeon Mall which is normally not known for doing game promotions (or having many games) at all has set up a sizable Splatoon display. I will try to get a photo.

3. Splatoon Amiibos sold out at all store I checked. I managed to get the last Squid Boy and couldn't find the other 2 at all.

4. Wii U in good supply. Not sold out anywhere.

5. Lots of used WiiUs available. To tell the truth, Splatoon might have moved a lot of WiiU hardware. Used ones. With the low prices and availability it makes sense to buy a used one for Splatoon. That's what my friend did this week.

6. For the first time since Smash, elementary school students are talking about a Wii U game. Kids without WiiUs are watching Splatoon on Youtube (which sound super boring to me if you haven't even played it).

7. Retro store in general seem to be not doing well (other than big chains like Mandrake). Since I last posted a Vinnk's Village (2 years ago?) about half of the retro store I used to go to have closed or removed their retro sections.

8. Most seen (non-smartphone) Vita game on the train: Minecraft. In fact I haven't really seen anyone playing anything else on the Vita for a while. Not that I see a lot of Vitas OR 3DSs. It's all smartphones these days.

9. Most of the street passes I get are for Yokai Watch 2 (this is over 60% of all the passes I get).

10. PS4 is capturing a lot of mind share. It's all my Japanese gamer friends talk about most of the time.

11. Xbox 1 is only sold in 2 stores in my town and I have never actually witnessed anyone buying one or a game. 360 on the other hand does pretty well at the used game stores and most of them still have a dedicated section.

10. My daughter is old enough to play games on her own now. Her current favorite: Kirby Rainbow Curse.

XBX is a very unique game anyway. There are no such games on other platforms and Nintendo consoles has always been a good platform for niche games. The main JRPG platform this gen is the 3DS, a Nintendo system.

The 3DS is the main platform for a certain type of JRPG, namely the monster-collection ones aimed at younger children(ie, Pokemon, Yokai Watch). The performence of more "hardcore" RPGs lately has been decidedly mixed. Bravely Second did substantially worse than Bloodborne and may perhaps end 100K behind it. Witcher 3 may end up outselling Xenoblade 3DS by almost 2-1 despite a lower PS4 install base than New 3DS one.

To the extent there is an audience anymore for JRPGs then, I think a claim can be made that it is split between the PS4 with the WRPG/"Mature" JRPG one, and the 3DS with the kids and old-school audience, though as Bravely Second indicates, they may well have moved on already.

I am actually interested to see how Dragon Quest 8 ends up doing. It will certainly do "well", but I would not be surprised about a 40%+ drop from DQVII.

What's the logic behind the comparison of The Witcher 3 to Xenoblade 3DS port?

Didn't Shin Megami IV opened with around 188000 copies sold on the 3DS?

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
@vinnk

Glad to have a Vinnks Village again !!

PS. The podcast episode a couple of weeks ago where your wife was on was great...heh.
I am actually interested to see how Dragon Quest 8 ends up doing. It will certainly do "well", but I would not be surprised about a 40%+ drop from DQVII.

Just looking at the sales of DQ 4-6 on DS and DQ7 on 3DS - why would you expect a 40% drop on DQ8 just like that?

YSO predictions

[PSV] Shiren the Wanderer 5 Plus < 15k

420 PSP Mystery Dungeon Shiren the Wanderer 3 Portable 14,005 / 31,373
594 PSP Mystery Dungeon Shiren the Wanderer 4 Plus: Kami no Hitomi to Akuma no Heso 6,044 / 16,437

Seems on par with the PSP ports at least.

Oh man Atelier 3DS was a mistake.

I don't see it selling drastically worse than the Vita entries. Depends how much effort was put in I suppose - Vita entries are just straight ports, 3DS seems a porting of the mobile assets into the framework of Rorona.

There's no way in hell a (down)port (for some) of a port will not sell significantly worse than the previous port, especially on a platform without the main fanbase and with very little promotion. Honestly, it feels like I'm the only person on Earth (let alone Japan) remotely interested in that game.

Koei-Tecmo has several of those, come to think of it (the Nobunaga 2 and ROTK2 remakes coming this summer, the Kiniro Corda game they released in February).

Not... quite sure what they're expecting with those to be honest. If you want to catch flies, you do so with honey... not the 8-months old choco bar you found under the back seat of your car.

Also, saw someone mention this but Media Create DOES count bundles, all the time (except when there's a download card instead of an actual game... pre-installed is counted too).

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

This...sounds...like...a great image for what we're talking about. I can see that speech figure being used in the future. Even if it doesn't make sense to use it. And I'll use it. Gah.

So, Splatoon could miss the 200k mark even with its second week sales.
I'd be disappointed after all the positive buzz read on GAF during the last two weeks.

Man, after all this positive buzz and Splatoon won't even outsell MK8's LTD. I'm disappointed.

Since when is GAF an accurate reflection of the market at large? (and especially Japan?).

Game is on the Wii U, why would you expect an insane hold. 60K 2nd week with maybe some stock issue is a pretty good number...

Holy fuck the exaggeration bwahahaha

Pro tips:
- Shipment could be scarce.
- YSO was almost wrong (depending on the tracker) for the Splatoon 1st week
- Selling 56.000 would put Splatoon over 200.000
- if it sells 199.000 would you be disappointed? And if it sells 201.000 you wouldn't? My god
- The only numbers that matter are the final LTD for Splatoon, not the LTD for the second week

LOL, what an hyperbole. I'm just saying that I'd be let down after having read all the initial positive hints before the numbers hit.

I was talking about the buzz in the MC threads, not the general reactions of GAF. At a certain point, it seemed that it could have debute closer to 200k than 150k, instead the "905+" ST was referred to the first weekend shipment, not the first day one. Chris (that's not a Nintendo enthusiast, let's say) even pointed out (correctly) that with an almost 200k debut, considering that it is a Nintendo product, and a marketed Nintendo product, could have reached a 400k LTD (so 50% ratio between the hinted firts week and its life to date numbers).
Instead, the high ST was on a 150k shipment, the debut number are exxactly 150, and it could not even reach the 200k target in its second week. That, to me, considering that it is a Wii U exclusive, in an almost dead market (the home segment in Japan), could hardly translate into a 400k LTD, while at a certain point a hoped for this kind of outstanding results

I'm not saying that Splatoon did or will do bad. But could not do as well as I hoped in the last few days, due to some leaks.

Sorry guys, but I'm just saying what I feel: I'm not a professional analyst, I'm a user on a videogame board.

I don't suppose there are any figures on Splatoon digital sales?

I was quite surprised to see that the online code for it is currently number 3 in the Amazon Japan gaming charts (with the physical copy at number 1). Seems a rarity to see a digital version of a game charting so well (at Amazon Japan at least).

Splatoon could reach 400.000 perfectly even if next week sells only 30.000. Hell, look at Mario Party 10 right now and we will talk when its final LTD is > 250.000.

MC threads buzz doesn't translate in Japanese sales, you should know that by now. But saying "I'd disappointed if it's not over 200.000 next week" is some Kandinsky's post level when all indicates that Splatoon will hover 195-205.000 in the three trackers next week.

Were you disappointed with second week sales of yokai watch? ;D (no, I'm not saying that Splatoon will end with more than 1 million, just that second week numbers could mean shit for some titles)

Most people called YW a bomb when it launched (which I found hilarious) :p

You let your emotions get into you :p

The initial prediction for Splatoon is "the next W101" you know. :p

There aren't absolute numbers from YSO. I usually post the upper limit (leaving the extraordinary predictions). If I took average YSO gave Splatton a 125k first week prediction, with or without cutting the very high or very low predictions.

Since my words are often misinterpreted that's not what I said.

I know YSO are not absolute numbers but I thought that you took the average number. Interesting to know that you take the upper limit extracting the non sense predictions. Thanks for sharing!

PS: Right now the YSO numbers that you post are better indicators than Amazon, comgnet & Tsutaya together IMO. Not disrespecting these indicators but YSO numbers with comments from Hiska and other people there (like Vinnk's return) are more reliable to me.

Hey thanks a lot! We enjoyed making it!

Also one more anecdote. The fist Xenoblade game is currently selling for around 5000yen used. It has actually been going up in value since XCX came out. Last Story on the other hand is like $8.

Heh I think both comments are really nice to have but they're just as anecdotal as comgnet, amazon and tsutaya rankings.

If Splatoon sold well digitally we'll get to see that when (if?) Famitsu reports it in their monthly digital ranking I think.

Totally agree. And my anecdotes only represent a small town in Kyushu. We don't have the big stores like Bic or Yodobashi Camera.

Hiska-kun's info represents a peek into a larger city and is really useful (I enjoy reading them every week) but are still just anecdotes.
