The amount of Wii U consoles sold on Week 1 and Week 2 of Mario Kart 8's release was the lowest absolute amount of consoles ever sold during Week 1 and Week 2 of a Mario Kart release.

And, the relative percentage decline of Wii U hardware sales between Week 1 and Week 2 of Mario Kart 8's release was also the greatest of any Mario Kart release.

However, Mario Kart 8 provided the largest relative percentage bump to Wii U hardware sales in Week 1, even if in absolute numbers the bump was small.

400k is lowballing? I was being honest but it seems Persona has truly become a big franchise in Japan now.

600-650k would be Tales territory (among the top selling of that series iirc). I don't know, that seems a massive jump. Wouldn't mind it surpassing expectations though :)
No, that would be its middle ground. ToD is the best selling Tales game at 820k. Exilia had one of the best first weeks in the franchise but was front loaded and didn't live up to earlier successes in the end.

Are you sure about that?

Do you reackon Hyrule Warriors will give a bigger bump?
You said it yourself, Musou audience isn't on the Wii U. Well, not much of it anyway. So obviously it would provide a bigger bump than MK (after the fact, we now know not so spectacular bump).

PS4 should be fine now with all the Japanese devs announcing PS4 games at E3.

lol
DD still the only notable 2014 title.

Mario Maker, especially with the NSMB art style option will be a big seller.

In addition, Kirby is a pretty popular franchise in Japan. Add to that smaller hits like Yoshi, Captain Toad, Zelda, etc.

They're sitting on Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem as well.

The outlook for the Wii U isn't as bleak as you're making it out to be. As far as announced games go the Wii U has a stronger selling upcoming lineup than PS4 in Japan.

With how well the Wii U does in the holiday season I fully expect the gap to be more like 1,5 million by years end.

You forgot MP10. AC isn't announced yet but when it comes it will be another potential million seller. Anyway, 2015 is looking good and will also have a strong holiday. Nintendo is definitely not phasing out Wii U support but instead starting to focus their efforts on it, as was expected historically.

The MK bump might be minor, but Wii U's weekly sales are currently up yoy, so it's closing the ytd gap. Even if it goes below 10k again, as long as it stays ahead of its last year sales, it will continue to close the gap.

Same is true for its ytd sales compared to PS4. The only real threat is DD, without it it wouldn't be surprising if Wii U stays ahead of PS4 for most of the remaining weeks of the year, closing the gap somewhat until the expected holiday bump.

MK will show its effect again during the holidays, so you could easily be right with Wii U increasing its lead over PS4 this year.

PS4 is not exclusive in that statement. What have the Japanese third parties even announced at E3?

FF Type 0 HD

Seriously.
He didn't say third parties. Nintendo announced plenty.

X1 got another 3rd party exclusive though.

There's also Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley. Funny enough both games are western only right now.

There's also Let it Die but the revelation that's actually what became of Lily Bergamo makes it iffy.

Of course if we don't limit "developers" to mean only 3rd party publishers then there's a ton more (Bloodborne, Phantom Dust, Scalebound, Captain Toad, Mario Maker, Mario Party 10, Bayonetta Wii U, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Devil's Third, Star Fox Wii U, Project Guard, etc). There's at least one publisher who seems pretty invested in continuing Japanese console game development.

Something does not compute here.

Agreed.

Bayo 2 releases 9/20 in Japan for 7700 Yen. Same package deal w/ Bayo 1 the West gets. Seems like the Japanese Wii U schedule is shifted a little bit up compared to the West... any particular reason there?

Also would Mario Party 10 sell to a different crowd than Wii Party U did? Although maybe that'll help the software sell (even though that's in 2015).

A month between Hyrule Warriors and Bayonetta 2? Not bad Nintendo. This might be one of the better holding periods Wii U has.

Persona Q did really well. Also nice to see that big software can lift the 3DS's numbers.

Sad to see that Mario Kart didn't help the Wii U that much. It really looks to want to head back to sub 10,000 units.

originally I was expecting it opens a little lower than PADZ but now it looks like 800K is a possibility. When was the last time a non-DQ/MH 3rd party game selling over 2 million copies?

The list of third-party titles not named Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter (or Final Fantasy) that had sold over 2 million units is extremely small. Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters IV which is the most recent title to meet these requirements was released over 13 years ago.

[NFC] Pro Baseball Family Stadium (Namco) {1986.12.10} - 2.050.000

A little high, but I'm right there with you in being disappointed especially considering the nature of the game and the install base. It should have crushed Persona 4 Golden's opening by like 2-3x.

What kind of insane expectation for a Persona spinoff is that.

What are you doing SE. Where is my next gen Chrono?

Persona Q had a 60-80% sellthrough according to Famitsu. Sounds like it sold about what Atlus estimated, maybe a little less. Wasn't a big success nor a failure for an Persona game on the 3ds. Wonder what platforms they will decide on in the future for their games.

But that didn't sell bad either.... :*(

Problem is, neither Kato (freelance) nor Monolithsoft (which originally worked on the Chrono series before founding their own studio) are still at SE. There is probably no one at SE who wants to do another Chrono game.

Although they are doing time travel stuff in other games like Sigma Harmonics and FFXIII-2, so the spirit lives on.

Thank you. Had no idea that Monolithsoft worked on Chrono.
Most of the same staff, Monolithsoft is what they called themselves after leaving Square.

SEGA had some big expectations for it iirc. We shall how it holds, but yeah I'm surprised it wasn't 80-100% considering how much it sold FW.

and maybe Bayonetta 2 will give a bigger bump, absolutely that audience is NOT on Wii U

How have this games sold? It's nice to link them, but we should know this numbers. If they bombed it means the audience is not there.

Hope Hyrule Warriors sells well though. It looks really nice.

Yes, it could happen. But don't have high expectations in Bayonetta, since the original didn't sold that well on a console with a higher userbase.

Bayonetta will be interesting. Will there be many people willing to buy a new system just to play the sequel? Not sure what other examples there are to draw from.

There doesn't seem to be a large audience that will just follow Kamiya anywhere, I doubt Scalebound is going to pull big numbers nor drive XB1 sales much in Japan. And from memory W101 certainly didn't.

Time to move Persona permanently to the 3ds if a spinoff can do numbers like this imo.

That's a bizarre conclusion.

What's up with people suggesting persona moving platforms? It sells well enough on Sony stuff for Altus to green light a gazillion titles.

Isn't the original included with bayo 2 in Japan as well?

I'm not focusing on software sales, I know that Bayonetta did not so good on both PS3 and 360, but they had a lot of action games on their line-up

But maybe people who liked Bayonetta back in the day might be interested in playing the sequel, so they will buy the system, maybe they will buy some more games and then sell the Wii U
And from a specific point of view that would mean moving hardware units.

MK8 has not moved so much hardware, and that was the first thing I noticed on launch day when I visited some shops here in Tokyo, but as it has been reported, MK is not a brand which helps so much hardware sales, cause it's a Nintendo game, a Mario game.

The only thing they could have done was releasing during Golden Week, 4 weeks before; maybe it would have helped hw sales more than releasing it in the end of May

Unfortunately, I don't see Bayo doing jack squat. It'll do better than 101 though, that's for damn sure.

W101 is an incredibly low bar.....its almost the lowest of low bars.

Bay did 320k across 2 platforms. Really for a new IP that is very good.

I don't see Bayo 2 doing nearly as well.

Yeah, yeah. I know. You're talking about a (kind of) small dedicated audience buying the system to play those games. Something similar to what happened when Tales of Vesperia released on the 360, I guess.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Musou games have been already released on Wii U, so more Zelda audience than Musou ones will buy the game imho

and maybe Bayonetta 2 will give a bigger bump, absolutely that audience is NOT on Wii U

You dont really need a WiiU to play either of the games if you are a Mosou fan - you need a WiiU for the Hyrule Warriors though.

Bring a main Persona game to 3DS, ATLUS! Clearly the audience is there.

If P4G can perform well in a machine that's comparatively performing worse, then a good Persona game in 3DS can potentially sell very well too.

Time to move Persona permanently to the 3ds if a spinoff can do numbers like this imo.

You guys are crazy.

Just wait and see how well P5 will do on PS3. Thats where the majority of the fanbase is and Atlus knows it.

Why do you say this? Who's to say whether PQ couldn't have done better on Vita or PS3. It didn't even open that much higher than an updated version of PS2 game that came out when the userbase was smaller.

Wait to see how Persona 5 performs before you say that.

Isn't the original included with bayo 2 in Japan as well?
For Bayonetta 2 to sell well, it's going to need to attract people from their PS3s. It's a nice move from Nintendo for the few people who wanted games like Bayonetta last gen but didn't get a PS3 or 360 for them for whatever reason, but I don't think it makes much impact on the game's potential to move hardware.

Will a Musou fan buy a system just to play one Musou title?

P3DS (P3P + FES) would have been a good move with the movie and to test the waters even more

The majority of the fanbase will be wherever the games are. Handhelds rule in Japan now, so it's not as "crazy" as you think.

Katsura Hashino said that P Studio seriously considered handheld devices as the platform for Persona 5, but they decided on the PS3 when they realized that's where most of their fans would want to experience the game.

Yes it is. P4U has sold 200k on PS3 and that was a fighting game spin off. P4G has shipped 350k on Vita...I guess P6 should be on Vita as well.....no. Whats clear from these spin offs doing so well is that the Persona franchise has grown significantly. I'm not sure why this insinuates Altus should put the mainline franchise on PSV or 3DS especially since the PS3 spin off game did just as well.

Right now the fan base is on PS3. Just wait and see the numbers P5 on PS3 will do :)
