Here's the thing about online ratings. If a ton of people are going out of their way to spam 1-star ratings for something, you know they at least care strongly about it. They might be upset, but it shows -interest- in the title. Sometimes it's far worse to get a middling reception where those who care think it's okay, and most of the market in general just... doesn't care.
it's like love and hate...u still care

Yoshi Amiibo sales are going to be through the roof though.

I mean look at those plushies:

LOOKKK AATTT THHHEEEEMMMMM.

So kawaii

alright this is way too cute

I'm not taking the 3DS sales to prove my point, is the whole trend, Mereru I believe is the best selling Atelier, the next games sold less and less with every new game, probably the sales are good enough but I don't think it will be good news for GUST if the next Atelier (I guess in PS4) sell less than Shallie.
The Dusk less was less popular than the Arland series for whatever reason so they're probably going to try something interesting to remedy that with the next line of games.

Interestingly enough, Amazon's XCX reviews are quite varied, numerous, and detailed. Shows you people cared... it just wasn't what they wanted/expected across the board.

If Takahashi and crew move forward with the critiques in mind, it should help the next title (which will exist, even if I have to bankroll it!).

Good result for Splatoon and Wii U but I can't help feeling that for home consoles in the region it's a titanic battle to be mediocre in sales at best to downright horrible at worst (relative to the market historically).

Do you guys think that Monolith Soft is going to continue making big budget rpg games for Nintendo after the lackluster performance of Xenoblade X?

Depends on how substantial the Western sales are in my opinion. But I think they'll definitely stick to RPGs of some sort either way. Nintendo seemed to have learned their lesson after Disaster: Day of Crisis, that a noted RPG developer should develop RPGs.

Big budget is relative. Monolithsoft is still the ~100-person studio they have always been. It's not like they grew into a 200-person studio to make Xenoblade X. Towards the end of their PS2 dev cycle for "big" RPGs, Xenosaga had declined to about 170k for the third game. That didn't stop them from getting Xenoblade made on the Wii later on, and that sold like 160k. That didn't stop them from getting Xenoblade X made, which should sell about 150k when all is said and done. Maybe a bit less. They've also had games like Disaster which was by no means cheap to make. That cratered even harder. Sold less than 30k and wasn't even released in the US.

I don't see why things would drastically change overnight. Maybe their next project won't be a console RPG which takes 4-5 years to release, but they'll still continue making RPGs unless Nintendo decides to repurpose the studio into a pure asset studio. They already have Monolithsoft Kyoto for that though. :p

Anyway, the bigger question right now isn't "will Monolithsoft continue to make big console RPGs" but "will Nintendo have a console next generation". :)

Yeah they can't expect it to be as good as the Witcher 3 because 1) It's their first open world game and 2) they were handicapped by the Wii U's hardware.
Its not their first open world game. It's there first HD game though, and Takahashi did go on record saying XCX is a "test" of sorts to see what HD development would be like and what they learned from this game would be the stepping stone going forward in their future titles. From that it's safe to assume the probably got what they wanted out of XCX but haven't completely pushed the limits of what they're capable of. Whatever game they make next I have utter confidence in them to continue to make great strides in compelling game design with HD development.

I loved Disaster though. I wish they would make a similar game next.

I'm still thinking Nintendo will technically have a console but it will just run their handheld games at higher settings. In which case being on a handheld might help with the sales of Monolith's stuff in Japan.

Or They could make mobile games.

There's no market for B-tier games of this sort anymore. The only way you can really sell a cinematic action movie type game these days is if you have the best of class production values and marketing. Unless your game looks like Assassin's Creed or Uncharted, and has ads and banners all over major cities in the US, you don't stand a chance.

Back in the PS1 and PS2 era, Japanese developers could release stuff like that and there would still be interest. Today? You just get laughed out of the gate. Unfortunately the climate is what it is.

Also, it's not unlikely XBX will sell more than XB in Western countries, so the small "loss" from Japan could be offset by the North American market.

Yeah I've said this many times before, but people need to realize that the "installed base" comparison is completely worthless when we're talking about games which sell 200k or less. It's simply an unimportant factor. The installed base difference between the Vita and the 3DS is a huge chasm. Yet there are Vita games which can outsell 3DS games in the same genre, as long as we're talking about 100-200k titles. It just shows that such genres attach a small but dedicated audience.

Xeno Wii sold 193k on the Wii (their most successfull console ever), XenoX is selling 115/125k on the Wii U (their least successfull console ever): can't see any huge re-thinking from Nintendo about the team/studio/genre/IP based on that.

Xeno Wii also sold not-so-hot in the West (it was a Gamestop exclusive in US too), while XenoX still has to be released there.

Considering the game has yet to be released in the markets it seemingly targeted and that its prequel performed in, unlikely. Maybe it'll underperform in the West and it'll sit below 500k LTW worldwide. Maybe it'll crawl to a decent worldwide number. But it's too early to say.

I think, for now, it's unlikely that they do anything other than make RPGs.

Well... apparently, shortages are still common this week? It's certainly surprising, wasn't expecting such enthusiasm for the game.

Good thing printing discs is so much faster compared to making cartridges.
Is it possible to see wiiu sales jump again for a third week?

That is impossible right?

Interesting to see Langrisser releasing a month after Fire Emblem. Does anyone think it'll help or hinder it? It's not like there's a huge amount of SRPGs on 3DS, maybe it'll benefit from a few new FE fans looking for something similar.

Some notes on it's gameplay here:

Lol they said Shiren 5+ already met their sales goal at the stream. Must have been very cost effective project..
It seems they had cost development and expectations in check, good for them. Hopefully, Atelier Rorona 3DS was around this reasonable in both departments. Talking about Koei Tecmo, still surprised 3DS is getting another round of ROTW/NA ports/remakes, considering how they performed the first time (and considering how they'll perform this time too)

I wonder if they are trying to push digital?

they are seriously lazy with discs

Naah, that's impossible. I think, in the best case, it'll sell in-between Splatoon's debut week (17k) and Splatoon's second week (21k). If it indeed increases, I'll drink my p-...damn, already taken. Ok, I'll suc-that's been overdone, even! Well, I'll just be happy then.

Their silence about Splatoon's worldwide sales is weird right?
I mean they were pretty quick to release PR about MK8
Not really.... e3 is starting soon and they will likely mention its success or sales around that time. They might have an ingame event as well to celebrate the sales.

Nintendo usually releases figures for the games that sell over 1 million. Or it is very safe to assume that Splatoon isn't there yet. NoA might give some numbers tonight, if the sales are good.

There's no point doing a specific press release unless it's hit a noticeable mile stone, I imagine it's still the under a million worldwide so that's why we haven't heard anything, might have a better idea after the npd tonight

It has probably yet to reach a million worldwide. That's a possibility since it may not have sold that much in Europe. But we'll probably hear more when NPD and NoA PR drops.
