I really can't see PS4 hitting 5 million at all.
Vita will probably hit 5 million, but it'll still take a while, and i don't see it doing too much more.

The traditional industry has just collapsed too much.
PS4 with no games at all for this first year, and then just those big games few and far after that makes it really look like Wii U in that regard.

Looks like Mario Kart 8 will outsell Double Dash in Japan. Anyone else feel the same?

Can we then use this to predict that Smash Wii U will outsell Melee? Does anyone have the LTD sales and week three sales for Melee?

i find it amusing that the wII U is still beating the PS4 in japan.

Japan ,,, with all respect, is the only country in the world that video games fans behave in a strange way

Strange? I would argue that the rest of the world is acting in a strange way. Wii U currently has a better library than PS4.

But it's not like it'll be getting more games than Vita, and Wii U's games are arguably bigger as well.
Time will tell if PS4 kills those franchises as Wii U has done with Nintendo's games.

No you can't, Melee didn't launch a few months after a handheld version.

Wonder if Nintendo could have Animal Crossing WiiU as their big spring 2015 title ready, essentially taking the spot MK8 has for 2014. A real home console AC with NFC figures could sell some consoles. I wonder how big the team is though, since a part of the team is working on Splatoon as well iirc.

Wait, in the Wii U Animal Crossing Plaza can't you select which villagers are your favourite? What if Nintendo is using the Plaza to determine which characters are the most popular, via favourites and amount of discussion, to decide which characters they should sell as amiibo figures when/if the Wii U version of Animal Crossing comes out?

This could be a pretty huge source of revenue if it happens, and it takes off.

I'm curious with this statement. How many years does the PS4 need to reach 5 million and consider it as "easily fly past 5 million"?

Well maybe I exaggerated a bit with ''easily fly past'' but I still think it will definitely sell over 5 million. It will take time. If I remember right PS3 went over five million in april 2010 so from PS3 it took about three and half years (had huge boost in december 2009 thanks to FFXIII). I just have hard time to believe that PS4 would crash from 10 million to under 5 million with pretty much same games.

Uh, never thought about that. That makes a lot of sense.

Neiteio's wallet cries.

Damn if implemented right, amiibos are going to to suck people dry.

I believe here are all release dates that have been confirmed:

Kamen Rider: Battride War 2 - June 26th
Wii Sports Club - July 17th
Monster Hunter Frontier G5 - July 23rd
Dragon Quest X: All in One Package - August 7th
Zelda Musou - August 14th
Bayonetta 2 - September 20th

Yeah WiiU ain't going to hold.

Pretty much. How consistent that support is, when does it arrive and how will it effect Ps4 sales are questions that still have not been answered.

If it sells anywere from 800K-900K per year it will take at least 5-6 years for the console to 5 million. It's possible that this may be the maximum amount the ps4 sells per year until it is discontinued. The PS4 will sell a bit over 750K(It may be closer to 700K instead if the PS4 is unlucky) most likely by it's first anniversary unless it starts to sell like crazy during the holiday season or the start of next year. It will probably have to sell well over a million per year in Japan to fly past 5 million now.The PS4 may last a good 6 years on the market before support moves to sony's next console.

I think this TGS will be very important for Sony and PS4, in regards to Japan. They haven't shown any reason for people to even look at the system. 5-7 million lifetime sales seems like a safe bet.

Most franchises already had a steep decline in their transition from PS2 to PS3, like the former million sellers Winning Eleven and the Dynasty Warrior series. It´s likely that this trend will continue for several reasons, the most obvious beeing PS4s performance in the Japanese market. Another reason is that some franchises likely will face franchise fatigue due to a high release frequency, the most notable examples are the yearly Dynasty Warrior series and the several Gundam games. Anime licensed software in general likely wont reach the heights of One Piece Musou, Ken Musou or JoJo on PS3 due to to many people beeing burnt by the low quality and the decline of popularity/old age of former strong franchises - Naruto and Dragon Ball for example. Final Fantasy XV is the only guaranteed million seller but even this game will likely underperform compared to XIII.

Isn't that missing Pac-World on 6/25?

Well depending on Hyrule Warriors' impact, it might actually weaken the sales of Dynasty Warriors on PS4 (if there will be any of those games on the console).

It's not all about big games. Small/mid-sized games are equally as important, and we don't know how the PS4 will fare with those. I would say the main reason behind PS2 > PS3 decline is not because of FF/MGS etc decline, It's because of overall decline in games released in general.

Games released in Japan (include PSN games)

http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/comp_faqs.html

PS1: 3263
PS2: 2900
PS3: 1089 (so far)
PS4: 41(so far), for comparison the PS2 had over 1000 game release in it's first 2 years or so.

In the PS1/PS2 days you had new games releasing every single week, through the whole year. This is not the case anymore. Now we have systems like the Wii U that go whole months without a single new release.

Out of curiosity, does anyone think Youkai Watch 2 could actually drive hardware sales? I'm personally not too familiar with the games/series, but is the idea that this game has stuff from more recent episodes of the series as opposed to the first one? I'm also wondering whether the original Youkai Watch 1's sales would basically die out b/c of YW2.

The only real way to counteract the decreasing number of games is to give the games that actually do release enough volume and value that players don't get bored with their console. Nintendo is obviously better equipped to survive in such a market because that's basically the conditions they already had for the N64 and GC.

But the modern answers to this problem, which Nintendo also embraces, are multiplayer (local as well as online and MMOs), DLC and episodic releases. Most of these were of course previously explored on PS3 already. For example WKC had a cliff hanger ending and FFXIII-2 had episodic DLC.

Nomura mentioned that they are considering to go with an episodic release format for FFXV as well:

Sequels to Final Fantasy XV were hinted at with the line "A World of the Versus Epic" in the E3 2013 trailer. Nomura explained that the game had a self-contained climax and that it was the first part of an intended continued epic. He said that Square Enix was considering using online elements and developing shorter stand-alone titles to keep players interested and to avoid long waiting times for them.[ "野村哲也氏を直撃! 『ファイナルファンタジーXV』&『キングダム ハーツIII』最速インタビュー【E3 2013】". Famitsu. 2013-06-12.]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_XV#Possible_sequels

This makes a lot of sense. Usually FF relies on other smaller titles to build the install base off which they can sell their sale target. But with those missing in Japan it takes literally forever for a platform to arrive at that point.

If they release the game early, it benefits the platform of course, driving its sales. But the used market will cut their software sales short. So they need to have something that makes the players hang on to their copy and not pass it on to the used market. Or at least convince them to get all episodes so the follow up ones will be sold as new copies.

Anyway, the episodic approach might be a chance to get FFXV out earlier than expected. Surely SE understands that without enough titles driving PS4 (and X1) sales, waiting will be only detrimental. The Western market won't wait either.

DQX's version 2 model of episodic story progression might help create a positive buzz for such a model, as WKC and FFXIII had rather disappointing results.

they should have talked about MK8 DLC to keep the game fresh in Japan by now

hope it does not fall below 40k next week because Mario Kart needs long legs until at least September

I don't think MK needs DLC (so soon), it has online multiplayer. And Nintendo needs the other titles doing well, especially DQX.

The difference between the Wii U and PS4 is going to be that the PS4 will have more consistent support in the future.

i question how consistent japanese third parties are (in japan western thirdparty games usually dont do well). also take into account that many japanese third parties are now working on nintendo first party games (bandai namco, atlus, koei tecmo)

Anyway, the episodic approach might be a chance to get FFXV out earlier than expected. Surely SE understands that without enough titles driving PS4 (and X1) sales, waiting will be only detrimental. The Western market won't wait either.

I think you're misinterpreting the reason they are doing this. FFXV will be an "epic" with multiple episodes due to sheer necessity - asset creation is so expensive nowadays that you can only make your money back, if you re-use your assets time and time again. The world they are creating for FFXV can be used with only slight additions in the next two FF games - which means that the individual game is both cheaper and quicker to produce (since you don't have to waste 3 years to create assets for a completely new world).

I doubt they'll be able to relase FFXV quicker as a result, since SE still has to lay the foundation for all of the upcoming sequels.

that model worked well with FFX-2. however with FF XIII-2 and Lightning Returns it seems to have failed hard.

FFXV is not going to be an "episodic" game. Let's not be silly. If it's successful to begin with they're going to try and release more games with the same engine and assets within 1-2 years each, similar to games like CoD and Assassin's Creed. But that's not "episodic" at all.

What is the release schedule for PS4?

I just wonder because if PS4 continue as it does in Japan, why should 3rd parties not just focus on Vita/DS/SmartPhones?

Maybe I am just to pessimistic about the status of the Japanese market.

Certainly but these small mid sized games came to PS3 following the big games and that should happen with PS4 too. Of course as we see starting from PS1 the amount of these games continues to shrink and it will certainly happen with PS4 too especially with mobile boom in japan but to what extend well we have to see. Before PS4 launched I had naive thought that it could capture some of the Wiis audience and sell maybe even better than PS3 despite the console maket overall shrinking but yeah now I already agree that it will not touch PS3. Crashing from 10 million to under 5 million I disagree though. It's following exactly same strategy as PS3 and I don't see how with that there would be over 50% drop. PS2 -> PS3 drop came from casuals fleeing to other systems.

A version of this for each system as of the first 4 months in their life could perhaps be interesting.

Unfortunately gamefaqs advance search don't have option to search by specific date, only years. From what I see the PS2 had like 150 games released in year 2000, developers didn't really star mass developing for the system till 2001/2002.

PS4 has 43 games released so far in Japan (of which 22 had retail release).

Tbh it's kinda too yearly to judge the system performance. Maybe we should wait for TGS and see what devs/Sony have to offer next year/future.

They're talking about episodic DLCs in the vein of that Three Cursed King thing in Dark Souls 2.

And they could release FFXVI going the route you've said in 2-3 years. Theyll have a full set of character models + animations, textures, buildings and other assets and an engine ready.

They should copy Atlus in that aspect. Basically have a giant library full of stuff to share between different FF games that they re-use again and again.

They can take all the monster models from FFXV and use them in XVI. Same for trees, most buildings, caves, some ruins...

They don't need to make a FFXV-2 in order to save a lot of money with future releases.

But I think I've already posted this same opinion in a MC thread like 2 months ago lol.

that model worked well with FFX-2. however with FF XIII-2 and Lightning Returns it seems to have failed hard.

The problem was that a lot of people disliked FFXIII to begin with, to a degree that the "FFXIII" moniker and everything related to it became toxic by the time Lightning Returns launched.

If Final Fantasy XV will be released to a better fan response, they can release sequels without a huge problem. And even if not, they'll probably do it anyway, since creating a new world would likely take too much time without having some quicker games in-between... However, I suspect that this time around they'll only re-use the world FFXV takes place in, but replace the cast. That way they can prevent people from being absolutely tired from the characters by the time the third game launches. This also means that they game's world has to be actually interesting, which might be one of the reasons FFXV's development takes so long...

They're talking about episodic DLCs in the vein of that Three Cursed King thing in Dark Souls 2.

Square Enix Japan has a huge problem with doing DLC right. They canned all the DLC they were working on for FFXIII due to "technical" issues, and the DLC they released for FFXIII-2 were all just boss battles, minigames, or cutscenes, yet priced in the same way people would expect from actually substantial RPG DLC. Unless there's a complete management overhaul, I don't see them changing their stance on that. So if they're going to make something substantial with actual levels and effort put into it, it'll be a sequel and not DLC.

The difference between the Wii U and PS4 is going to be that the PS4 will have more consistent support in the future.

Why should japanese developers bother with PS4 with these low sales? They would only support PS4 if Sony spend some money, like Nintendo is doing with Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta etc.

The only relevant gaming plattforms in Japan at the moment are mobile and 3DS and perhaps Wii U could get a little chunk if the trend started with MK8 continuous.

is any expecting the DQX package to chart?
SE apparently is. The game offers prizes when you continue playing the game on a paid subscription, after 90 days, 180, 360 and so on. At the time the all in one package was announced they also established new reward periods after 30 and 60 days.

Of course it's nice for people who have been playing the game to get these prizes retroactively but obviously they're aimed at new players.

That's not what Nomura described at all. He seems to already have decided that the game's story will be split up. Especially the 1-2 years sound too long for what he suggests about the game using online for providing quick sequels:

The context of what he's saying there is completely wrong. He's not talking about online features to -deliver- the rest of the "series", but rather that they are planning online features to extend the life of a game while people wait between sequels.

He makes it pretty clear in the next question about online features, where he laments that big titles take a long time to make, but players tend to finish them off in a short period of time. Online features can help extend this play time, so while waiting for the story to continue, players still have something to stay excited about. This is what they're exploring with regards to online functionality.

Okay so my google translate impression of what was there wasn't insane.

He's talking about multiplayer like how people play CoD until the next CoD comes out, and perhaps some DLC to extend the life of the multiplayer as well.

Now, there are social mobile games that do "story" updates every so often, but they're never ending products and also don't charge for those updates. FFXV also isn't an f2p service game (well, at least I assume as much) so that model doesn't really work here.

It's honestly only been 1 week since E3. You really expect a Direct soon already? I guess for Japan, E3 might not that big to them and thus it could work but is there honestly much more to show for Hyrule Warriors that wasn't shown at E3?
