Kirby's legs are much longer than it looks. :p
Kirby has pretty good legs indeed (that's a Kirby game for you), but the problem is FW sales.

***

About the next handheld: a late 2017 release is completely unrealistic, so a 2018 one would be pure madness.

IF the next handhed came out in March 2017, that'd be pretty much six years after the launch of the 3DS. Now, the DS lasted a little over 6 years too, and that was in a radically different market (no real competition from smartphones yet). It also sold a total of over 30m units. On the other hand, 3DS is in a significantly worse market for handhelds, with intense competition from smart devices literally nuking everything in-between low-budget games and/or family stuff and "AAA" games like MH. There's no way the 3DS could last until late 2017, especially with how Software sales have taken a hit for a lot of games this year (though obviously also for different reasons besides the aging platform).

A late 2017 release also doesn't fit with the little evidence we have, aka: Nintendo hasn't had an internally-developed 3DS game since last year (not counting localisation like Fire Emblem Fates). The last internally developed 3DS game I can remember is Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer and Chibi-Robo: Zip Lash. All the others have been co-developed or completely developed by partners (MP Federation Force, Kirby, Ever Oasis, Hyrule Warriors Legends).

So what's Nintendo's working on at the moment?

When Nintendo finally unveils its NX platform is when we'll know about the next handheld and when we can expect it. As I've said in the past, I'm pretty certain the two are closely linked (no hybrid)... in fact, that's pretty much the only thing I'm certain about this damn enigma of a platform, ha ha.

***

By the way, new Run for Money game coming on September 15th. Looks like the series has sold over 1.2m units, according to Bamco.

Not bad for only three days of sales. Do we have DQH1's digital sales for comparison?

Also, is there an active database that keeps track of JP software sales? The ones I know of haven't been updated in a while.

It's hard to believe a PSP game sold 40k digital in a month even if it was given for free.
Actually, the game was in sale for just 21¥
Yeah, that's practically free.

Battlefield was just 800¥. Edited my previous post.

[PS4] Battlefield 4 (¥800) - 70.215
[PSP] Hayarigami Portable (¥21) - 39.475
[PS4] Battlefield Hardline (¥800) - 30.590

Famitsu Retail+Digital update.

[PS4] Dragon Quest Heroes II: The Twin Kings and Prophecy's End: 286.262 (Retail: 255.387|Digital: 30.875)

No digital for Vita or PS3, but the game is likely around 600k all versions combined.

[PS4] Uncharted 4: A Thief's End: 188.762 (Retail: 165.622|Digital: 23.140)

It's now the best selling game in the series as far as we know, though there's no digital data for any other Uncharted game, yet at the same time, this only includes the original release, while all the others had The Best rereleases.

Also for comparison, Uncharted 3: 183.730

[PS4] Battlefield 4 [Including Premium Edition and Premium Edition Best Hits]: 232.807 (Retail: 148.027|Digital: 84.780)

[PSV] Persona 4: Golden [Including Best Rerelease]: 329.829 (Retail: 308.810|Digital: 21.019)

For comparison:

[PS2] Persona 4 [Including Best Rerelease]: 358.899

Hayarigami was 23yen. Nippon Ichi Software ran a campaign on Twitter where each retweet = 0.01% discount. It achieved over 9,900 retweets and got a 99% discount LOL.

Persona 4: The Golden was 1,791yen.

Unfortunately for Nintendo and its Japanese partners it looks as if Japan's interest in 3DS software is fading (like the rest of the world tbh). To be expected at this point after almost 6 years. However its more concerning that Nintendo has not announced a successor. Games like Yokai 3, MHS, DQ11 would greatly benefit from being on new hardware. There cant be franchise growth on dying hardware. Level 5, Capcom and Square Enix are surely eagerly anticipating the next hardware.

About the next handheld: a late 2017 release is completely unrealistic, so a 2018 one would be pure madness.
I am almost certain the handheld isn't launching with the console in March *unless* there is actually a split format launch by region. Japan may see a handheld while the RotW sees a console. Of course, they could surprise us and the launch is a launch of everything concurrently.

But I was expecting it to be March for console, and then summer for handheld unless they had some mega-software line-up saved up to keep the 3DS afloat somehow but they clearly don't and their software in 2017 for the 3DS quite clearly ramps down fairly quickly. As Nirolak noted, what is left in 2017 (Oasis, and for the west some late localizations) feel very much like "transition" releases that exist to keep owners happy with some final little first party offerings. They don't feel like software designed to hold over an audience or to do anything big, they are more token "final pass" software as one piece of hardware transitions out and another takes its place. All lines of handheld have had this sort of passing, I think.

YW3 is more impacted by its own decay, and the same can be said of AA. But DQ11 is announced for new hardware, lol. If Stories struggles, I don't think new hardware or not will or would have helped.

But, yes, the 3DS is old now and six years is pushing it, especially in this new mobile age. They need that replacement and I hope they announce it in conjunction with the console when the NX is unveiled as it is the follow-up to both regardless of how they may word "not a successor to either" since the Wii/DS line is dying.

And if we can see the writing on the wall, Nintendo et al damn well do as well.

I was actually one that was advocating the release of a new console first, followed by the handheld later. However that was assuming a 2016 release, which we now know isnt happening. I mean the software lineup is good enough for 3DS but by now we should have had an idea of what both the console and handheld are and when they would be releasing. Especially the console as future software on Wii U is a ghost town and somehow its supposed to last another year. Hope Nintendo isnt too far behind with their plans. Something like holiday 2017 is very very late. Although at this point, considering their mindshare is already at an all time low, maybe its best if they take all the time they need as half baked launches with weak software severely hurt Wii U and 3DS and they need to come out firing.

It doesn't mean they're selling bad. There's demand, specially for Minecraft. The problem is that limiting Wii U hardware supplies when new games launch makes no sense.

With a recent Q Report, where we learned that SONY is earning a lot of money from PSN, I believe that not only SONY but game companies as well are pretty happy with these results.

DQH II had been enjoying a great spotlight in Japanese PS Store, so this with combination of being a good sequel is not a big surprise. Not to mention that DQH I had been marketed alongside of DQH on PS Store as an addition with budget price.

Congratulations to other games from "hiska-kun" list.

Well, he got that tag over the Wii U...
I know, but the most reliable indications for the machine, by insiders with a pretty good record, are of a machine that can get (technically) ports from Xbox One and PS4 rather easily, so I don't know where lherre's statements fit in this scenario, wheter they're a pure speculation-based opinion or a more informed one.

No specifics but diferent sources told me a different scenario about it (I mean over the things accepted here as possible).

I think the main concern about it or my impression is that "almost nobody" is working with it outside japan. I imagine there will be a good support there. Well, that's not shocking.

And I heard a lot of crazy rumors, you won't believe some of them.

I suppose your sources have talked about an handheld, with Wii U-like visual, with a TV output / an hybrid, going by your most recent posts. That is a starking contrast with what we've heard so far from reliable insiders like OsirisBlack, who stated how porting from PS4 and One will be easy, which is something I wouldn't see as possible if it were what you describe. Unless it's one of the SKUs of the whole NX family...maybe? I know you've been right about Wii U in the past, but OsirisBlack (example) was pretty spot on about PS4K well before Giantbomb's news.

Sorry, but right now other indications from good sources (I want to stress out this as much as possible), including Iwata's own words back in 2014 are leading me to believe another scenaro, but, well, we'll have to wait (damn it) and see who's right in the end, then.

I don't want to wait anymooooooore :(

The impression I've gotten from various people in the industry at major publishers is that Nintendo has given Western publishers their mission statement/general vision for the system, but not the system itself, so I imagine things will be hazy for a while.

Like, I'm 98%+ positive Toys For Bob was being truthful when they said they didn't have any NX development kits.

I want to have more confirmations of course but it's strange that people gives the same or almost the same info in this kind of things when they aren't related at all.

But we will have to wait.

PS: PS4 Neo was available (the info and specs) on devnet before giantsbomb article if i'm not mistaken. This is why we have detailed info about it since is almost a copy/paste.

I don't understand by the hardware being "old" developers should stop making games for the platform and wait for the next platform. Just because the hardware is "old" doesn't mean that the people that brought the "old" hardware is not going to buy games for the "old" platform. The hardware may be "aging" doesn't give publishers and developer an excuse to release poor products for the "aging" platform.

Welp. Isn't that one also on declining number? And many of their newer game have been flopping? Japanese Industry is really having hard time there. Brexit sure is going to make it even worst there with the rising Japanese currency.T_T

I'm sure a lot of people will be shocked by the new Nintendo machine and I think not in a good way but we will see.

We have LCGeek say that the CPU is greater than the Xbox One and PS4 as well the other poster saying that the NX can receive ports "relatively easy". So, are you say that the Neogaf community will be shock about a scenario of lack of western third parties game?

As I've said in the past, I'm pretty certain the two are closely linked (no hybrid)... in fact, that's pretty much the only thing I'm certain about this damn enigma of a platform, ha ha.
i think your post here is in mindset of the past.

Basically you are assuming that development at Nintendo is divided in to handheld and home console development. This mindset would defit the purpose of tem adopting an unified platform and OS.

So NIntendo has been working at the moment in games from the series that work both in a portable and home system.

Edit: In general, not directed to L~A. Please stop the teasing, if you know something that can't be said publicly, just don't say a thing.

EA announced J-League license in FIFA 17

So, we will finally see FIFA sale surpass PES in Japan this year?

Then, Konami can go all out to MGS Pachinko

i think your post here is in mindset of the past.

My point wasn't "Nintendo hasn't been working on new 3DS games because they're now working on the next handheld". It was "Nintendo has stopped working on 3DS games, so they can't really be launching their next handheld in late 2017"

That would mean 2 full years without a single internally-developped game on a handheld, which is just too much. I doubt they have enough "2nd party" stuff to fill in the line-up until late 2017, and I also doubt third-party will want to stick along for too long once holidays 2016 are over.

Also, my "What is Nintendo working on right now?" comment wasn't a teaser of any sort, and not sure how it could be interpreted that way (especially given the post it's part of). Yes I know it wasn't specifically directed at me, but still making things clear for anyone thinking I know stuff (I really wish I did, though, ha ha).

Depending on Iherre's source, these two posts basically tell us the reason things can be so completely off the wall/unclear in terms of what anyone knows or thinks this thing is (and Japan is keeping its mouth shut). If the source is western developers, and you follow Niro's post, then basically everyone in the west basically has just an "idea" of what the NX is and has never actually seen the system in any meaningful capacity (no wonder they delayed the launch, that and apparently fixing the dev tools before launch for once). Add in some telephoning and, well, you get things completely off the cuff from every direction.

That or the NX is a handheld (with WiiU visuals) with an HDMI out, seemingly. /shrug

Sounds great for Japan (fitting for this thread), sounds a hard-sell for anywhere else (not so fitting for anyone with grand-illusions of some great third party machine).

I'm not calling anyone a liar but after a bunch of "accurate" insiders got caught with their asses out after the fake controller thing, I feel pretty confident in saying that nobody knows a damn thing about the NX and the few privileged that do, ain't sayin shit.
