Actually, i would said from most third party, Konami had easily the best business sense.^^

They are not afraid to cut down money pit and then they will just do what the do best. Making muney.^^

On this question though.

After Bomberman and Momotaro, is there any medium size IP which Konami can revitalize which can capitalize on Switch hotness right now?

I can see Castlevania doing quite well but the rest not really.

Goemon?

Contra? plz...

Gradius maybe?

Lol. Thats fast guys.^^

But out of all of those, i can see Contra and Goemon probably did quite well into 100k.(Goemon much higher chance than Contra if u ask me.)

Contra with 2 joycon play is going to be a nice pull for getting more sales. Especially if the price is not too steep.

Gradius is probably the worst of the choice sadly as i don't think shump is in anyway alive anymore.

Speaking of contra makes me sad that we won't get a new Metal Slug forever anymore.T_T

I will ignore that both of these are Hudson... and say they should do Adventure Island.

Konami does have the best business sense, and Konami Sports Club is a very nice gym.

...... for how much it pain me, hudson is literally Konami now so i dont separate them anymore.

The advantage of 2d side scrolling is that it is probably a bit cheaper to make but i think the market for non Nintendo 2d platformer is damn slim nowadays in Japan. And of course, i had hard time seeing there is many old fans who are dreaming for the revival of Adventure Island or even Bonk sadly.

Their recent dive into Casino business had also been quite great too.

It's kind of funny how Nintendo absolutely dominates many of the genres they enter into that others pretty much can't compete. Adventure Island is my own little wish. They should go real old school and do Track & Field with Motion controls.

Bic Camera Yurakucho only had 59 consoles this week for the lottery (quite a drop from 99 last week).

I guess the missing consoles were sent to other retailers that had extra restocks.

http://www.twitter.com/bic_yuurakuchou/status/878795446147104768

Wow, Yurakucho is their biggest store isn't it? Strange to pass up on that.

I was referring to factual and not speculative numbers.

When you mention DQXI and US/UM you put a parameter for future sales yourself.

Except that, looking only at present without looking at the future (close or far) must be the worst decision for any business.

Why are people acting as if Konami is a big Switch supporter?

So far they've released one quite low budget game and nothing else, not even an announcement. Bomberman R was indeed a nice surprise and it has performed well but it's huge support or anything.

The truth is that 3rd parties have mostly been disappointing but we'll probably see several of them do a turn around.

I also feel that the PS4/Switch comparisons are very disingenious. It's true that both consoles have had a similar amount of 3rd party releases but PS4 had, at this point, both FFXV and KH3 announced for the system which are much bigger games than anything announced for Switch by a 3rd party.

No one is claiming Konami is a big supporter, just that they weren't the last on the train, and instead one of the first.

Final Fantasy has no choice but to released on PS. Square-Enix forced the series into a corner by doing this never ending push for graphics and realism to court the Western sales, FF will always be on PS as long as PS has the most powerful (or close to) system. KH3 is not really that big of game either, at least not in Japan. It peaked 10 years ago, and when it is finally released it will maybe if lucky sell half of what KH2 sold. That said, I would rather see SE take a try at some new franchises.

Castlevania, Goemon and Tengai Makyo.

Also ports for PES, Powapuro and Metal Gear.

Switch support should be compared with 3DS and Wii U, at least in the beginning.

Bomberman success can very likely lead to revivals of other dead franchises that fit the system and you can bet they have a close eye on FIFA performance this year.

If anyone expects high budget games that have been in development for years with western sales in mind first to push the magic button and jump to Switch, this won't happen definitely not in 2017 or 2018 and many of them (from western publishers mainly) never.

Hey. Alliance Alive was "written" by Suikoden's creator!

And Japanese impressions seem mostly positive!

But I will not fall for FuRyu's tricks. Nope nope nope.

*as he hopefully keeps tabs on 2ch and Amazon reviews...*

Yeah, looks like Alliance Alive is a good one. I held off on the preorder, but most impressions are very positive and after watching some gameplay streams, I'm in. Thank goodness they changed the font from the demo. It was a blurry mess.

Except I was keeping it subjective. You were treating subjectivity as objective and it's a totally flawed basis for an argument. If you want to state Vita will be down this year then no shit. To objectively state that 3DS will be -whether it will or won't be- is completely superfluous.

Chris1964

Since my 3DS YTD estimates are so objective and can be no base for argument we'll be here at the end of the year to see how far from reality I will be.

Looks like Gung-ho's Switch game will be an action game. Do they have any pre-existing series that match that description?

Q: First of all, we've heard you have a new Switch title on the horizon! Is there anything you can tell us about that?

A: We have a few titles in the design stages, and one which is currently under development. It's an action title, and we'll have more information about it at a later date, but the earliest parts of its development actually started about 4 or 5 years ago. It's been incubating over time, and when the Switch was announced we felt that with the new kinds of technology it was bringing to the market it would be a good fit for this project.

And of course, Puzzle & Dragons started on mobile, but there's also Puzzle & Dragons Z, Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition, and Puzzle & Dragons X [in Japan] on the 3DS. Since those spin-off titles have all been on a Nintendo platform, we're looking to see if there's a possibility of potentially bringing that IP to the Switch. Nothing official at the moment, however.

I'm pretty certain we heard that before since I was commenting how this gameplay system they've made which they claim to be new and never done before took 5 years.

Unless this happens to be another game.

I'll go check.

Edit:

Gung-Ho is making a new Switch game.

It's a new IP, is all ages and cartoony, is an action game, has singleplayer and multiplayer, and was originally not a Switch game (since it started 4-5 years ago, presumably as a 3DS game?): http://gematsu.com/2017/06/gungho-online-entertainment-switch-action-game-ages-development

I think action game can mean different things in Japan, wasn't Mario an action game according to Nintendo?

Yes, and it's not just Nintendo who refers to it as such. Another example would be MGS, which is an action game, according to Famitsu. Action is a catch all for a lot of genres in Japan. Unless you shoot, then it's a shooting game.

FPS are considered action games. Shooters are a very limited genre, like corridors of flight games.

I think this is a far more interesting interview on that new Switch project: https://www.destructoid.com/gungho-s-unannounced-switch-game-will-be-an-action-game-for-all-ages--442604.phtml

See the quote below. I think this is going to be a brand-new IP.

Morishita could not compare the unannounced game to anything on the market right now, and confirmed it would be a new IP. "No direct comparison exists," Morishita said. "It's a gameplay style that has not been seen before." The game will feature both a multiplayer and single-player component.

As I said, it doesn't matter whether they are or are not close. Making an objective argument out of something inherently subjective is deeply flawed. I'm astounded you can't see that.

Ninokuni on DS also hit the bomba bin pretty hard, that's not something that should be downplayed and that happened on the best selling console Japan ever got on one of its best year on the market (if not the best)
To be fair the primary reason Ninokuni DS hit the bomba bin as fast as it did is due to its oversize package which came with a big hardcover book required to play the game. That thing just took too much space in the stores. Successful new IPs tend to grow with time, not be big sellers right out of the gate, but no store wanted to try that with a space waster like Ninokuni DS.

Most of Ninokuni's ~900k western sales on PS3 were at budget pricing too, including plenty of sub $10 PSN sales. It's different from the bomba bin phenomenon in Japan but still worth noting that the game wasn't moving that much at full price anywhere.

Ni no kuni PS3 bombed pretty hard too. A lot of Ni no kuni themed PS3s were shipped to China. I saw plenty of them around, and they were not even priced higher than normal PS3. It's like nobody even wants it.

Code Vein is a game targeting western audience and Japan as an afterthought, Switch was probably not considered at first at all because outside Japan its success was not guaranteed.

To me Code Vein is Bamco's attempt to have their cake and eat it too. They want that millions of Souls fans in the west, but they also can't ditch the God Eater fans in Japan. The end result is something not immensely appealing to the west or east. Western gamers have to deal with the appalling art design while Japanese gamers won't get the local co-op experience they want from GE on PSP and Vita.

Namco owns Dark Souls, right? *(they don't) I imagine it might be that FROM doesn't want to do that franchise anymore but they still want that DS money.

Though I wonder where that leaves FROM. They're seemingly working on something for Switch, LKD said it was ports of the trilogy (or just 3) which could be cool. Though I imagine they've been working on something for awhile

Edit: *thanks for the clarification.

Namco do not own Dark Souls. They publish it in the west, that's all. Just like they publish The Witcher 3 in Europe. From Software own the right to the IP. They even publish it by themselves in Japan.

No, Bandai Namco actually owns the trademark to Dark Souls. They're not simply a regional publisher like they are with TW3 or Ni No Kuni, the rights for DarknSouls are more complicated than that.

From reddit although i don't know if it's true

Bandai Namco owns the Dark Souls trademark, From Software owns the Dark Souls IP. Neither of the two can make a Dark Souls game without the other participating, although neither are allowed to file a lawsuit because of a blatant ripoff like Slashy Souls, thus coming to this stalemate, where Bamco keeps trying to suck the series dry because their contract is getting closer and closer to an end.
