It seems like more "western" (and I hate that designation, honestly) launch games for Vita have been getting the limelight lately although their are some notable Japanese titles like the Musou game, Dragon's Crown, Hot Shots Golf, Gravity etc. that might help the Vita out in Japan, at least initially.

I think we all realize at this point that there are a few key franchises that the PSP's success is built on and until they (and Mon Hun in particular) appear as an "only on Vita" experience then the Vita probably won't duplicate the success of the PSP in Japan. If some of the smaller 3rd parties go ahead and jump in to help round out the software offerings and then you get the big guns like Level-5 on board then I would think big success is all but assured.

TGS should be very telling as to how the Vita will fare in its first year in Japan. If there are few announcements then expect a slow and painful year. If there's plenty of announcements with a few big ones then the Vita could have a big year and start very strongly.

What's this "Vita is gonna storm Japan" nonsense? So far it's launch is likely to be a carbon copy of the 3DS, both in price and launch title staples. A Ridge Racer, a Capcom Fighter and a Musou game. It even had entries in successful franchises: Layton and Nintendogs. And look what happened.

I don't think better graphics and a 2nd analog will be enough to sell a $250 device in Japan. A new MonHun might do the trick (but even then, MonHun *is* aimed at kids and high-schoolers), but it'll take at least one year after launch to show up.

What do you mean it's looking likely that there won't be a Falcom game at launch? It's not like a date and official launch lineup has been announced for any territory yet, and there haven't been many if any Japan-exclusive Vita titles announced as far as I know. I really think we need to wait for TGS before leaping to any conclusions - if nothing gets announced by then, you can continue with the "Vita is doomed" talk.

Go, Taiko! GO! The latest one is one of the best of the series. It got a very nice selection of musics and the new modes are... Fun, hehe.

But i miss the story mode of the first one. Unfortunately, i never got to buy the second one. It got Thriller, but i missed the opportunity and now...

Anyway, i'm always cheering for Taiko.

Is smartphone gaming big in Japan?
How are iDevices/Anroid doing there?

I ask because I believe that these devices have and will continue to have a major role in the low performance of 3DS (and eventually Vita too). How much impact are they having in Japan, if any?

It did better than any other version of Tales released the past half decade in Japan..... to even think it'd be beaten by the 3DS version is nuts, That's require like, 4/10s of the whole userbase to buy the game! Zelda barely has a shot at that and Ocarina was more popular than the most popular Tales game in the series.

Yeah I hope the 3DS release over here can improve upon the very poor performance of the first release on the PS2. Of course I'm not exactly counting on it as it will get zero marketing and likely lost in the Fall game shuffle once again but that doesn't stop me from hoping!

I ask because I believe that these devices have and will continue to have a major role in the low performance of 3DS (and eventually Vita too). How much impact are they having in Japan, if any?

Amagami is probably #1 in trackable sales. It sold incredibly well on PS2 when it came out, and the release this year on PSP (and rerelease) on PS2 was bigger than Steins;Gate. By association KimiKiss is also probably a large seller.

Fate/Stay Night also is definitely above it.

I have no idea, but Japan had advanced mobile phone gaming several years before the iPhone was even conceived. When Western phones were struggling to play crappy 128x128 2D J2ME games Japan had phones running Resident Evil and whatnot. So I'm not sure iOS games had as much impact over there, since it was not as novel as in the west.

I am in constant awe over how much Sony has been able to reclaim the Japanese market. They were pretty much dead in the water 5 years ago in Japan, and now the PSP and PS3 are charting dozens of games and outselling their main competitors (and the PSP is even consistently outselling the newly launched 3DS). If you start to lose your lead midway into the generation in which you gained it, you know you've been slacking off.

I don't know the reason but it looks that azalyn stopped providing estimates for initial shipments and first week sales.

get6-2: 40-50k first day for TotA, GoldenEye is sold out at most stores, SF4AE high sell-through, the 300k figure for LBX was referring to plastic initial shipment.

Yeah, i've saw Goldeneye sold out at amiami and was very surprised. It's not like it means great sales, but i wasn't expecting to see this happening.

Uhm...40-50k for the first day would be a solid beginning for Abyss.
And it could be an anticipation for a first week between 70k and 80k,considering that it is a game for a console recently released,and also the first RPG with a brand (even if it is a remake/porting) on the system.
Eternia debuted with 75k,and the original game was more important than Abyss...really not bad.
