Media Create Sales: Week 26, 2017 (Jun 26 - Jul 02)

Are shortages expected for the whole year? I think I'll want one for Xenoblade, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to get one.

Though I'm not in a major metropolitan area.

Theoretically, one or two weeks after Splatoon 2 launch, we should see the effects of bigger shipments, but you know it's Nintendo. If this thing continues after October, no tweet gonna save them. By the way. Gundam Versus is doing quite well on Rakuten, lots of pre-orders of the Sound Edition, but lots of day one sales as well.

It wasn't a tweet, it was full blown PR (so much more "official looking" and serious than "yup no switch in store sowies plz understand kthxbb").

By the way, regarding Splatoon, Nintendo announced the "roadmap" for updates:

- updates (new content) for 1 year, all free obviously
- Splatfest for at least 2 years

https://www.inside-games.jp/article/2017/07/07/108383.html

So, safe to assume there will be no paid DLC, or any sort of microtransactions à la loot crates.

Can't Gundam release next week push hardware above 35k?

3DS: 5.16m (+8%)
PS4: 4.03m (+11%)
SWI: 1.77m
PSV: 1.32m (-54%)
WIU: 393k (-68%)
PS3: 122k (-88%)
XB1: 13k (-48%)

PS4 surpasses 4 million, total sales should be above 20 million within 2 weeks.

Extremely slow May and June puts 2017 behind 2016.

Wonder if there'll be a Splatoon 3 in 2 years too with this roadmap...
If they're not putting out Splatoon 3 fairly quickly, I think it's actually much worse to kill off support in a year than it is to have an actual business model and keep the updates coming.

It really feels like the sky is the limit for splatoon in Japan. With DQXI and splatoon about to release media create threads should get a bit more interesting again after a bit of a lul.

I feel like splatoon 3 is unlikely to release on the switch but who knows. I think Nintendo is moving more towards a model where big games get one release per device with ongoing support.

I think announcing "Updates for a year, Splatfest for two years" is rather short-sighted for a multiplayer focused game today. Many games run for 3-4 years before ending content updates and even then it was live for another few years. Despite being a very modern service game for Nintendo, Splatoon 2's business model is rather old fashioned.

Indeed. It's doubly a head-scratcher as I thought Switch is supposed to be a long running platform that should end the software resets after every gen. Going all out with the service game approach without a time limit instead (like traditionally) releasing a new entry per gen would be the more natural plan there.

Guys we're talking about the company that is releasing a paid subscription phone app to be used for voice chat and matchmaking in their console.

Yeah, I really don't get it. I assumed Splatoon 2 would see support for the entirety of Switch's life.

This is the same company that sold a Mario game to millions of people on mobile, and then instead of making more content to sell to people who might want even more, they sat back and went "huh, that gacha Fire Emblem game we put out seems to be making more money, curious."

If I recall correctly, they provided content updates for the original Splatoon longer than they initially announced.

So I can see the same happening for Splatoon 2. Unless they actually are planning on releasing Splatoon 3 on the Switch, which would surprise me.

Did they announce "a year of updates" for Splatoon? Because it's not the actual length of support that surprises me, but rather the announcement itself.

Indeed. It's doubly a head-scratcher as I thought Switch is supposed to be a long running platform that should end the software resets after every gen. Going all out with the service game approach without a time limit instead (like traditionally) releasing a new entry per gen would be the more natural plan there.
Yeah I don't get why Nintendo is limiting Splatoon 2's DLC to only a year. If they really don't want to develop more than a year's worth then I honesly would rather they slow down the rate they release them by double (assuming its as fast as Splatoon 1, which had atleast a new weapon like every week.) and stretch it into at least two years with the same content planned instead of just a years support.

No DLC in MK8D/likely no MK9 on Switch (tho I didn't expect any DLC here) seems like no DLC on Pokken besides the five new characters (this one only makes sense if they are done with the game, which considering how long its been since arcade update I guess they are for atleast a few years.) Arms amd Splatoon 2 free DLC is great but Arms will likely only last a year if not shorter. I hope atleast Splatoon 2 lasts a full year since Splatoon 1 stopped after 8 months for maps/modes which are the main thing.

The free DLC is awesome because with Smash 4 (not free but still) & Splatoon 1 it was always so awesome to keep going back to see new stuff. Its really a shame they are limiting themselves to anywhere between 0-12 months.

As it stands I guess Rocket League is the only game that will have multi year support on Switch.

Don't get me wrong excited as hell for Splatoon 2. Sequel to my 2nd most played game at 346 hours and I detest playing on tv so now its on a portable that number will likely triple in the same time frame. Its just a shame they aren't willing to support any of their games for over a year outside of Smash 4, which got content just over a year later.

Sort of, they changed plans after originally providing a launch window timetable.

I believe the DLC for Splatoon was originally supposed to conclude with the big update in August 2015, but was later extended to January 2016.

The year of updates is already almost twice as long of a window the original game got, and the 2 years of Splatfests is almost double what the original got as well.

I honestly expect that Nintendo is lowballing these numbers in case they decide it's no longer worth it. But if the game keeps selling over the next couple years, I think they'll continue the updates to maintain the momentum.

Nintendo blew 2013 because they couldn't get any software out in time (among other things).

Looks like they're gonna' blow 2017 because they can't get any hardware out in time. Even when Nintendo wins, they kinda' lose.

Hopefully they have a killer lineup ready for 2018, so they don't kill momentum before they finally have enough stock to sell.

Stop being so dramatic. Their games won't fade into the aether at the end of 2017.

I'm honestly not that worried, but this is super frustrating, even if it's not entirely on Nintendo.

Fair, though perhaps I should have saved my "stop being dramatic" for others from the looks of it.

RIP Japan
Nintendo fucked up
My guess is 60k....
How did they not expect their new cultural phenomenon to not be a system of seller of insane caliber...

Stop. Read what you posted and realize how nonsensical it is.

Curious, though, if S2 is low on preorder and based on COMG what do we say about the two DQs below it? 😋
