Media Create Sales: Week 27, 2014 (Jun 30 - Jul 06)

It is a lot. Given they have that alternative business model test store though, I'm wondering if they're intending on dumping those and going with annual expacs plus microtransactions.

One year is extremely short for an expansion. You see a lot of complaints when major patches come out less than 6 months apart because it does not give the majority of the player base enough time to actually clear the content. There would be huge backlash if an expansion only has a single major patch and only 2 PvP seasons (average season length is ~24 weeks.)

I think most of the user base would prefer expansions every ~18 months and for them to stop having the last major content patch as current content for ~ 1 year as they have been doing since WotLK.

Here are their stated intentions though:

They could get me back if they did that "no monthly fee" thing. I would casually play the game if it didn't have a monthly fee.

But I don't know if that model will make more sense economically speaking that their actual subscription fee. I wish we had China excluded WoW numbers, since they have a different business model there. Without that information, it's quite hard to know the amount of "10
-15
per month" subscribers they currently have.

I didn't know exactly what it was, but I've found on the Internet that in that country instead of a monthly fee they have some kind of pay-per-hour thing. I've been trying to find for some 100% reliable info but I've just found a Wikipedia article which leads to a death link and a comment in GameSpot forums.

Because it was for a long time THE Vita game to get? I see Vita games drop in price (usually down 75%) very quickly here, but P4G was seemingly always full price and is right now down 25%.

You say it as if it wasn't THE Vita game to get anymore. Having more must haves on the platforms doesn't make Persona 4 Golden less awesome.

You had to calll it this way?

And even if you had... Did you had to include SAO there?

According to Sony, Dragon's Crown and God Eater 2 were the top two downloaded Vita games for 2013.

http://ps4vitanews.blogspot.com/2013/12/sony-released-rankings-for-2013-online.html

So I'd imagine those two give P4G a run for it's money.

PSV also is the console which usually has the highest download rates.

Could you add the sold-through percent for those weeks as well?

In Japan? I'm not analysing the download data under a fine tooth comb or anything, but the numbers we've got haven't suggested a huge amount of downloads on the Vita, I thought.
DD on consoles aren't huge period but Vita's is the highest (that's not saying much though). 3DS has higher digital sales for a individual game (whenever a big game is sold out at retail, like mh4 for example).

I wish Famitsu had more to give us than this, and started tracking digital sales sooner. Then what is said about digital sales wouldn't have to be so speculative.

Sorry, that's the only thing i can do now. Around 10 people were lining 30 minutes before the shop's opening in front Bic Camera in Ikebukuro.
The shop opens today at 9:00 (usually at 10:00)

Youkai Watch 2 could be in this!
Wait, a YGO:DM game once sold 1 million+ first week? Wow, I guess I was right thinking it was a Big 3 back then.

EDIT: Ahh, I see the 4th game has 3 versions and it's right at the Battle City arc. No wonder it was huge.

The performances of these PS4 late ports is about as exciting as the Wii U's late ports.

Vita tends to be slightly higher proportionately but they're both in the same ballpark and 3DS tends to lead in raw numbers due to the big games as you mentioned.

Given some rough calculations based on last year for the 3DS....

Week 1-52 2013/ Week 1-27 2013 * Week 1-27 2014 ~= Week 1-52 2014
4,931,509 / 1,995,388 * 1,106,722 = LTD of 17.429m by the end of 2014, ~2.735m on the year

Think that could happen? The 3DS does have Youkai Watch 2, Pokemon R/S remakes, MH4U & Smash Bros. 3DS on the horizon as its biggest titles.

Also, hiska's YW2 pic actually looks fairly tame for something some folks are expecting to sell 500K - 1m first week.

Today is thursday. People have work and school, and big releases are on saturdays.
Also, usually big lines are in Akihabara and Shinjuku, not in Ikebukuro.

so in YW2 you can play as the girl?

I was watching the first 45mins video on Youtube and it seems there is a character select screen at the beginning

Wait now that I look at it......a Persona spin off on the Vita has somehow managed to become the second best selling Persona game in the series in Japan.

Actually, Persona 3 for PSP had a very similar performance to the PS2 release as well.

Which reminds me. When we're considering whether Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate can live up to 4, we should probably also factor in the games' nature as a social phenomena.

You had to calll it this way?

Then by that, MH itself should be called an MH clone, because Capcom themselves have called its genre as hunting action.

I'm going to go back to calling FPSes using "Doom clones". Just for you guys.

"Hunting action" is the most convenient name because it avoids stepping on toes, but Japanese companies love making bullshit genre names, so using the given genre name isn't always a great idea. Unless you want to start using terms like "survival panic" or "RPG of Passion Lighting the World".

Ah, that does make sense actually. I guess we'll see a mad rush starting Friday and going through the weekend then =).

Mobile passed it but packaged sales seem remarkably consistent according to Gibson. Unlike the west maybe in Japan the sharp mobile uptake isn't cannibalizing consoles quite so much?

It has just dropped a bit. Felt like it was all over NeoGAF when I got my Vita one year ago.
Anecdotal data, but it's still almost twice the price as much newer Vita games like Killzone and Tearaway where I live.

The net tells me it's under 30 Celsius, but it's really humid right now. Not as hot as Dallas, I don't think. Dallas was the hottest place I've ever been to, too.
Also, I think you could play as the girl in YW1, too.

EDIT: Yep http://www.youkai-watch.jp/yw/game/game06.html
