Looks like The Great Ace Attorney will perform similarly to Investigations 2.

NDS : Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth 2 ( Capcom ) { 2011-02-03 } - 134,760 / 219,682

Ace Attorney peaked on the DS, probably because of all the casual gamers.

It's a pity seeing yoshi's predictions. I'm having great fun with the game and it's undoubtedly a better game than the last two handheld titles.

The new Phoenix Wright game will do better than the investigation games. And it should sell another big chunk with the best release (as all the PW games do in Japan).

YSO predictions

Week 29, 2015 (Jul 13 - Jul 19)

[WIU] Yoshi's Woolly World < 40k
[3DS] Fire Emblem Fates < 30k
[PS4] Batman: Arkham Knight < 30k
[WIU] Splatoon < 30k
Interesting, Yoshi is opening higher than Batman (neither being particularly good)... and Splatoon's legs might be longer than Batman's opening week? Isn't that a rather week opening (it comes out on the 16th right?) after the stronger western pick-up we've been seeing recently?

Looks like FE is holding out pretty well against the usual RPG collapse.

It's a pity seeing yoshi's predictions. I'm having great fun with the game and it's undoubtedly a better game than the last two handheld titles.
Yoshi may have good legs into the holidays, but otherwise it's a multifaceted issue: WiiU is saturated with platformers, WiiU is caustic to its own software's potential.

Compared to past titles it would be big improvement.

22./00. [PS3] Batman: Arkham Begins # <ADV> (Warner Entertainment Japan) {2013.12.05} (¥7.980) - 11.537 / NEW <60-80%>

[PS3] Batman: Arkham City # <ADV> (Warner Entertainment Japan) {2011.11.23} (¥7.980) - 12.200

Batman Arkham Asylym - 2.8k

Of course still 30k is not exactly big opening. Japan doesn't seem to care about Batman games.

This is indeed true! I had not looked at part performances of the titles, but we had seen rather noticeable upticks in western titles recently (Witch 3 being the most recent with a very strong showing), so it was a bit surprising to see Batman open so much worse in comparison in spite of being an equally large, open-world (but not RPG) Western title.

I had taken signs of recent purchasing habits as PS4 purchasers being very much western aligned in their tastes, and for a while we were seeing that with what was selling well on the platform (relatively speaking) so this is a surprising (to me) weak opening.

Of course, it's only after the initial circlejerk wears off that discussion actually takes place in sales threads, NPD is the most extreme example of this.
It never wears off, people just get more subtle.

So Arkham Knight is looking at big uptick from Arkham City, Warner Japan must be happy. It will be interesting to see if it has any legs though.

It seems that all the Wii U 2D platformers (not called Mario) end in the 100-150.000 range (Luigi, Kirby, Donkey Kong and now Yoshi). I don't think the saturation is an excuse, just that Wii U is bad for all the software released on it and not called Splatoon ;D

Anyway, Yoshi is a wonderful game. Not DK:TF GOTY material but much better than Kirby's disappointment.

YSO is predicting 150k+40k, which is less than Investigation debut week. I don't see The Great Ace Attorney hitting 300k.

Should have called it: Splatoon's Wooly World Starring Yoshi from the Popular Yoshi's Island Series.

Precedent of western games in general would say: no.

Of course this is post-Splatoon so who the fuck knows.
I was thinking more Witcher 3 level, but either way I was thinking it would be unlikely.

I doubt that. They were hoping for a 150k LTD and are getting ad support from Sony.
LOL, numbers from the Square Enix school of sales expectations- they'll fit right in in Japan.

Witcher 3 had great legs and is on it's way to 150k LTD. YSO predicted < 50k opening.

Not saying Batman will perform as well, but I don't think at least 100k LTD is impossible just because YSO predicts a 30k opening.

Of course, YSO can be wrong. And Witcher 3 opened at near 70k, with a good hold the second and third weeks. If Batman does open at <30k, though, I don't think there's much legs to be had when you start so low to the ground. Of course, only time will tell.

As similar to Ace Attorney it may look, this game is a pseudo-new IP, and therefore word-of-mouth will be important. Ace Attorney has always gravitated around the characters - a game in the same genre from the same game designer but with different character is basically untested for this franchise. It'd be very interesting to see how it sells.

Yokai Busters will do gangbusters. It really is a whole new game in-spite of using the same engine yet again. Extremely fun and I expect word of mouth to be high. Jibanyan is back bitches!
queues outside Shinjuku Yodobashi were decent enough for 6 o'clock or so given it is a spin off.

Game starts off a bit "meh" but it's really picking up now - once things start unlocking it's pretty darned good.

Whilst some maps and enemies have been spruced up and reused, the engine has been given a polish so there's much less slowdown and the speed of combat in general is much better than in YW2. They've made it much more playable and less of a chore. They also added some completely new elements - some bosses are multiple faceoff affairs, that might include a change of perspective or environment. It works well.

Also - one word - there are protection and escort missions - but so far, outside of one, they've all been pretty fun. *GASP*
The one in question is a rush on a character who can't move and , other than one optional G-rank boss, is the only failed quest i've had so far.

The Boss battle stuff has an interesting couple of twists and it feels like elements of MH have been pulled in.

I was worried that YW:Busters would be fairly lightweight but it's legitimately a full fleshed out experience.

And Jibanyan's already been kicked to the curb in my team - mainly because i fluked an S-rank Attacker from my first coin in the Gachapon and captured an A rank soon after. I guess i should look to upgrade Jibanyan though because the version in the Ghostbusters suit is pretty cool looking

Oh yeah, and the number of Ghostbusters is pretty cool (along with other nods to another film from around that time - this is at around 9 hours in, rank 8, front line is lvl 29-32). The Busters base is basically the same as the Ghostbusters house including the firemans pole, the car is the same and blares the same siren sound etc...

so yeah, a solid 8 - need to play with the family to see if goes up from there, but happy with it. Be interesting to see how much Storyline content their is.

Three copies bought in our house, the race is on to stay ahead.

EDIT: OH, one thing people are praising/complaining about in equal measures - the Gachapon system has been made a lot better, and you also have other options for getting goodies along side that (e.g. one other option allows you to trade off the ingame exp points/currency for a higher chance of better items/medals).

A few things that have been implemented :

- you can't try any of the Gachapons, switch off, and try again - seems it keeps track before you attempt it.
- you can use Coins found in game (which have a set group of prizes) or you can use the coins you get from walking around in real life that i forget the name of (though drops have been limited)
- you are limited to a certain number of goes on the Gachapon per real life day - with the count being reset at 6am each morning.

Seen a few complaints about the last one.

Also Streetpass swaps you registered team with a bypasser and then you can fight their team in a 4v4 battle (with the CPU controlling the other team) - i think i've had about 9 street pass battles and one "special event battle" for passing level 30 with one character). It's fun.

Tsutaya's report

- As it was expected Yo-kai Watch Busters was the best seller this week. It sold the half of units of a main entry. And as pre-orders showed, White Dog Squad version sold better, even faced stock problems.
- The Great Ace Attorney and Taiko no Tatsujin V also sold great. The last one probably due to the new young users that Minecraft is attracting on Vita.

- For next week Yo-kai Watch Busters will keep the first place. Batman is expected to do well.

------

The usual blog is pointing that there's a big difference

Good to see folks slowly capitalizing on that new kids' audience on Vita thanks to Minecraft. I guess we now have Taiko, Minecraft, DQBuilders later this year, and perhaps Digimon for kids on Vita?

They stopped really aiming at kids with Re:Digitize and just abandoned them altogether with Cyber Sleuth (few kids would be able to read it). Don't expect New Order to be aimed at kids either.
Oh yeah, why is the distribution so lopsided for this?
Red's exclusives are horrible compared to Blue's.

Since there are various members here that are intimate with Japan. How it's the atmosphere around there with the latest sad and unfortunate news? If not much about the general community at the least how is the gaming community reacting to it?

Again, sorry for the slight OT but i had this curiosity in my mind.

It has been noted and it has now passed

I was in Aki yesterday and i didn't see it be any different to any other day
Japanese who i know who are into games acknowledged it , said it was sad/shocking, and moved on with their day.

Basically - if you are asking if there was any noticable on the ground difference ? Then certainly in Tokyo - no. The big factor of that day for most of the population was that it was horribly hot.

This isn' t meant to be an attack - it's just it hasn't resulted in any meaningful city wide outpouring of grief.

This is how the evening-news reported it:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=OgtcZOQ_xj8

Generally you won't notice anything in the real world, but at least in the media it was brought up well.

So as a follow-up on previous conversations, Digimon World: Next Order was announced for Vita in Jump and unspecified Digimon smartphone games were also referenced: http://gematsu.com/2015/07/digimon-world-next-order-announced-ps-vita

While the visual quality of the game looks like Digimon: Cyber Sleuth - and I expect it's on the same technology base - it looks targeted a bit more younger/all audiences than Digimon: Boob Quest.

While the protagonist is nominally a high school senior, he looks more like a 14-16 year old going on an adventure with his digipals and I don't see anything racy present and nothing dark in a non-cartoony way as well.

This is the kind of thing I think Nintendo could have as a multiplatform game on NX pretty easily if the platform is technologically capable. It would be a logical fit for even the stereotypical demographics of a Nintendo platform, but their current asset and technology base is not for 3DS.

Yokai Watch 3 will do less than Shin Uchi, just watch.
It's happening.
I half expect YW3 to actually launch on 3DS and NX, and for that summer release rumor to actually be true even if it means coming before the holidays just to replace the 3DS (and regain lost modern software) before losing too much time/ground.

Pokemon is dead! Only SIn&Punishment 3 can save us!

I'd be a bit surprised at that Summer rumor.

It's not impossible to launch a system with an unveil in early 2016 followed by a launch in mid-2016, certainly consumer electronics devices are even much shorter than that, but it would be a seismic change for Nintendo's reveal -> release schedule.

In the normal situation they'd already be going from a 1.5+ year lead-time to an ~8-10 month one. This would be like 6 months at most, and more likely 3-4.

It also crunches the advertising cycle for games a lot, but I guess that doesn't matter since I kind of expect them to be multiplats from third parties anyway (and some could have even already been announced in that case).

That said, my initial impression would be that July would be the start of the process described in that article (final specifications set and orders made preparing for a launch around November).

Getting out earlier certainly wouldn't hurt them however. It's already pretty painful abroad and sales aren't exactly through the roof domestically.

I think a few titles we've heard of could well be NX (cross gen) titles. Like the original reveal of the MH:Stories (after the obvious pre-rendered CG)? Doesn't look like its on the 3DS. Could it be an NX title? Could it just be them prettying it up? YW3? Could work.

And who knows, there's an awful lot of 2016 titles that feel like they are coming out of the woodwork when I'd conversely be expecting all of it to be winding down as dev kits and target specs of the next handheld start going out (how much do you stake on the Shin'en possible slip of tongue on the handheld). And as I said, I think Nintendo would have a lot to gain from retiring the 3DS sooner rather than later due to the tech age of the 3DS, and the fact that even at the same price point they could be completely exceeding the Vita's capabilities and getting all of its software with easy porting.

Yes, it is an enormous change in their usual turn around but, then, as of recently we've been seeing plenty of unusual changes going through the company. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they learned from how much the early reveal hurt the WiiU's mindshare long-term, and if Iwata made plans to avoid that scenario with a quick-ish turn around from reveal to release. (They also have a lot of control on the market in Japan riding on their next move, and the 3DS is just unable to keep up with the ever more prolific technologies that streamline game making for developers.)

FFVIIR? Obviously when it comes out in 202X.

Well, it is clear that Namco hopes to be the large fish in a small pod - Digimon IP is better suited for 3DS audience (and Digimon DS games sold the best in the last decade) but the company probably fears the competition with Pokémon and Yo-kai Watch.
