Both surprised and not surprised by Yo-kai Watch "moved" to 2016 (not really delayed since there wasn't any date to begin with). On one hand they didn't mention the game at all since the Level-5 Vision event, but on the other hand I didn't expect them to actually have two years between Yo-kai Watch 2 and 3...

I wonder if this was planned from the start, or if something changed since the L5V. I also take it we can expect a Yo-kai Watch 3 DX (for the 4DS) for December alongside the 3rd movie?

Another interesting thing about YW3 now being slated for a Summer release is that it's not the "furthest" 3DS game announced so far for 2016. It seems like all the other titles will come out in the first half (though without any date it's rather hard to say for sure). Provided the 4DS launch in 2016, that'd mean the transition should more or less smooth.

Why do people assume P5 is going to have long legs? Honest question. No snark.

If the game does 600k opening week then yeah it might beat Splatoon numbers for the year, but I would say there is very little chance of it beating Splatoon LTD.

Unless I'm missing something..

Is there a tie-in anime? That could pull more people in after launch week.

Usually poplar RPGs open big and then drop like rocks. Why is it believed P5 will perform different?

......

As for mindshare in Japan, Splatoon is big right now. People are talking about it. Kids, adults. People who don't have WiiUs.

RPG gamers are excited about P5. Very excited. But at least at this time there is not nearly the level mainstream hype.

Splatoon on the other hand I can see getting a big bump at the holidays (like Nintendo games do every year). And then having lingering low chart (or off chart) sales until the NX.

I will be first to admit I have not been following P5 closely (though I plan to pick it up), but I live in Japan and unless there is some massive ad push by Atlus or a new anime tie in, or an irresistible bundle, I don't see it overtaking Splatoon.

But is there something I am overlooking or forgetting?

P5 hype must have not reached the small town you live in then ;)

In all seriousness, DQH opened close to 600K on PS3+PS4 combined and only ended up with around 800K. Do people really think P5 would be bigger than DQH in Japan this year and lifetime?

I'd say yes, because P5 is the next main entry in a pretty popular JRPG franchise. DQH was not a sequel but a spinoff. It also was not a traditional JRPG.

What is the largest amount of money you will bet on Persona 5 outselling Dragon Quest Heroes combined sales this year in Japan?

P5 outselling DQH....thats doing 820k+....thats pretty damn crazy.

P5 hype is strong but I'll go with 600-700k (impressive nevertheless if it does).

Dragon Quest spinoffs and remakes regularly sell way more than any Persona release could ever hope to. Even the Rocket Slime games sold more or on par with Persona 4 (until the third game bombed). Many Musou games do as well even with much smaller franchises than Dragon Quest attached to it.

Reminds me that there was a Dragon Quest Mystery Dungeon series of games. Wonder if Square Enix will revive that.

Not only that; Mystery Dungeon started as a Dragon Quest spinoff with Torneko no Daibōken, two years before the first Shiren game

This holiday is going to be interesting.

I am actually curious how far DQB will move the needle (on PS4) or if the spin-offs have already done what they can do with DQH, and if most of the strength won't be on PS3/Vita for a title like this.

Persona 5 vs. Splatoon sales fight?
Sounds like a situation ripe for some fanart and drama.
It's honestly not something I could guess, one way or the other... though with Japan's decreased traditional playerbase, an RPG like P5 might take a bigger sales hit than what forecasts would call for.

DQB+Minecraft will keep Vita above 10k forever

Vita means life

Come to think of it, does PS4 have any other big hitters for the holiday this year?

Dunno how big they'll be on PS4, but Tales of Zestiria, Star Ocean V, and Persona 5 are this year.

No, Atlus isn't dumb.

Not exactly holidays but MGS V is releasing this September. Should provide a nice boost to hardware and maybe continue to sell through the holidays if it has decent legs.

PS4 and PS3. Some people in here are predicting Splatoon selling like gangbusters and hitting a million copies this year. I think it will just barely hit around 700K-800K well all is said in done. As for P5, I expect it to sell fairly well.

Plus your usual big western holiday titles that seem to sell more each year (At least Battlefront, COD and Fallout 4 should do fairly well).

Despite what some people will tell you, it's PS4 and PS3.

Who's saying that?

Persona 4 - 193k (week 1)
Persona 4 Golden - 137k (week 1) / 329k (LTD)

Might seem impossible for Persona 5 to get the kind of sales some people are predicting but keep in mind that it's already been SEVEN years since a brand new main series Persona game came out and since then the series has gotten much more recognition due to an endless stream of remakes, spin-offs, and anime series & movies. Also keep in mind that this time, Persona 5 is going to have state-of-the-art technology compared to the competition - when Persona 4 came out, it was up against stuff like Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, and Tales of Vesperia. There has yet to be a big budget PS4 exclusive JRPG so Persona 5's very stylish late-era PS3 / early PS4 flare stacks up very nicely to what it's against.

I definitely think Persona 5 is going to do a lot better than any previous Persona title has done, but how much better remains to be seen.

Is it common for a game to be announced for a "winter 20XX" release date, but then actually be released in "20XX+1" in Japan?

Yes.

Square should try to get the game out by December, though. It could do big numbers with the Minecraft audience/kids if there's no Yokai Watch game.

last year they released their hunting action game in december
we know their monster collector isn't due until next year
so might as well release their crafting game in december

As someone who do think Splatoon will sell gangbusters and predicted a million, I never said it would reach it this year and I'm well aware that it's a very optimistic prediction and the odds of it making it are still low.

Normally, they just announce the release date as "this winter" (今冬) without specifying the year.

Like Nirolak reiterated, Winter means anything from December until March. DQB will likely not be out in 2015, guys.

A title for kids not coming out when kids get gifts? Wut?

In as of so far, do we have anything super-Holiday oriented or aimed at kids at all this year? (Except Splatoon, of course.)
