Media Create Sales: Week 28, 2013 (Jul 08 - Jul 14)

You do know that Joe formed and runs a certain website that I think a sizable crowd knows right?

Banner.jpg

I think he deserves some respect.

I've been to that site for more than a decade, I highly respect him, I just feel that people shouldn't diss him.

That post (if serious) was pure garbage. It doesn't matter what you do. Just look at dyack situation. You dont get a free pass for a pokemon website

Nothing against Joe because he provides me with giggles galore, but, the idea that you should respect someone for running a Pokemon website is absolutely fucking hilarious to me.

This too

It was serious. I just feel that since Serebii is one of the top Pokemon websites that I know of (alongside Pokebeach, Bulbagarden, etc), people should be more constructive in what they say to him, he's not just some guy.

Almost said he wasn't an average Joe...

Excuse me for trying to defend a guy that I feel deserves to be defended. I do like helping people, not make fun of them.

People who say 2 days don't realize how front loaded games are, but saying its sales are mediocre is a farcry.

Pretty much. If it had the full 7 days, we'd probably be looking at 150k units sold max. Which is actually pretty good for a Pikmin game, but not the big blockbuster that the WiiU could really use at the moment.

Everyone whose saying 2 days of sales in response to the Pikmin sales what are your predictions for next week?

Pikmin sales aren't bad, thay are mediocre, but far from "very good".

20k is good sales for an average week for a system, not one which had Pikmin, a new bundle and NSLU after a long drought of games.

Are you talking about Pikmin 3's sales or the Wii U sales since the release of Pikmin 3? Because the former is actually pretty good and very much in-line with how the first Pikmin performed on the Gamecube in its first week. The actual hardware bump is virtually the same, too - I think the original Pikmin may have bumped it a little higher though. It's more important to see the weeks to come than this single week, at that. Which I think will probably be above what they were in the past few months, but certainly nothing to write home about until the larger releases start coming.

There also was not a new bundle - just a new premium SKU that's white instead of black (why this wasn't there for launch is beyond me). And New Super Luigi U came out a month ago. This is just the more expensive physical release of it, which I'm not sure anyone really expected to sell much more than it actually did (let alone consoles).

I think that Wii U sales were probably a bit lower last week than I expected. I'm not sure who really expected Pikmin 3, a white premium system, and a more expensive disc release of DLC to spring the Wii U to 35k+ sales.

Serebii's a great site, but Joe's talked utter bollocks in this thread.

It doesn't matter who he is. The post was shit (although hilarious for the worst defense ive ever seen on neogaf). We shouldn't be in the habit of changing how say something because of who a poster is.
I can admit he makes some... different reasonings..

But he runs a Pokemon website, it's a little fair to expect a little bias isn't it

Sure and we are free to laugh at it. And the posts you quoted weren't insults.

re: Wii U price cut. I can see them cutting the price for 50, but not 100 or more, not at all. Why? Because it'd create the belief that their products should never be bought at launch, since you just have to wait for picking it up at the "real price". After what they did with 3DS, another giant cut would maybe solve some Wii U problems in the short run, but it'd be poisonous for their next platforms when they launch. Unless their next launch will be so amazing that no one will care about the other cuts...but it's too risky.

We'll, maybe I'm overreacting, people aren't throwing awful, attacking insults after all.

And yeah it doesn't matter who worked at where, people in many companies and sites have been called out on GAF, so no-one has special privileges.

Theory:

Next week is the beginning of summer vacation for Japanese schools so they have a lot of tests this week. Parents knowing how addictive a new WiiU and Pikmin would be, purposely avoided buying it to ensure that their children could go to college.

Next week, with summer in full swing I expect WiiU at 50k (unless it's hot).

I hope pikmin does better in the west. Fucking wiiu better not kill this series. Now I dred to see 101's sales. Poor platinum.

150k minimum.

Didn't know Konami revived Boktai, in real life indeed.

Serebii's a great site, but Joe's talked utter bollocks in this thread.

I will say over and over again, while the content is there and great at Serebii, it is one of the most unprofessionally maintained and designed websites I've ever visited. But I suppose when your audience is pre-teens, there isn't much of a bar that needs to be raised. But seriously the thing looks like it's straight out of 2001.

Vita hardware sales are actually impressive holds all things considered.

Yep. I used to go to Serebii all of the time. I don't care if he runs that site, that post deserves a tag. Preferably one that is Pokemon related and involves the use of the move Heat Wave.

How about something like:

JoeM86
Japan used Heat Wave.
It's super effective!

Those are pretty much what I expected of Pikmin sales.

WiiU sales are lower than I thought they'd be, but I always questioned those that thought it would cause a sizable increase. I mean... it was intended for launch initially so it'd make sense for a chunk of those buyers to have already bought. Didn't think it'd be quite that many though.

I don't think this makes WiiU anymore doomed than it was last week though.

Not necessarely an issue if for the next gen they target right from the start a lower price and given the issue the issue the 3DS faced when it launched and the current issue for the Wii U I believe they will target launch price to be far more similar to the DS/Wii next time rather than 3DS/Wii U.

Except they already created this precedent you're talking about by doing it with the 3DS. People already joke about expecting their Wii U Ambassador games and the like.

To stick with your point really the damage has already been done. People buy a console on day one usually on a leap of faith, that quality content is coming in the near future. Both the 3DS and the Wii U had disastrous first years so it'd make sense for people on the fence for the next handheld/console (honestly who knows which one comes first) to be more hesitant.

Personally, if Miyamoto himself, one of the greatest devs of all times, came out and said that WiiU sales weren't as good as expected this week because of the heat wave, I'd laugh at him. So nevermind some dude running a pokemon website.

Sorry man, but if the CEO of Boeing or even the President says something incredibly stupid, people are allowed to laugh at him. The owner of Serebii.net isn't immune somehow.

I think Joe's a nice chap, and I like his site an awful lot.

Doesn't mean that his post shouldn't be called out. It was daft. Extremely so.

Mmh...maybe I'd have to rephrase it better.
I don't deny that the 3DS cut could have had an impact on Wii U sales, as well as the whole project / launch lineup, but at least, if they don't cut Wii U in that way, next console shouldn't suffer from this problem. But, if they cut greatily, it'll be a problem in the future, it'd be a sort of "confirmation" that Nintendo consoles don't deserve to be bought immediatly, it's a bad stigma. It'd be like One having RROD again: it would confirm people that Microsoft consoles aren't absolutely reliable at launch, then lower sales.

I know, I even said so a few posts back, I guess I forgot honestly. lol

I'm not feeling that well at the moment, might be why I wasn't thinking clearly.

Again, I'm sorry, I was reacted and I regret it. :)

It was also really hot to the level of heat wave in Japan last week, and it came out in a holiday weekend where people were not in the streets. Even the Pokémon Centers were fairly empty and that seldom happens.

This has an effect on sales. I'm not saying this to spin but as an explanation. You need to factor in all the factors in order to make a determination.

And they will crown you as their King, and you will rule the land of delusion, and false hope will be your mistress.

I actually thought you were making fun of him when you made your first post.

I'm sure you made a few people smile though, so there's nothing to regret in that regard.

This defense is almost as bad as Joe's.

If you say something ridiculous you deserve to be called out regardless of who you are. In fact, it would be incredibly disingenuous *not* to call someone out due to his or her status, internet-centric or otherwise.

I don't even see the point in spinning anything since Pikmin didn't even sell badly. Wii U is another story though, 20k is too low. Can't wait to see how it holds up next week.

Someone call the Queen, we've got some knighthood potential here.
Smoky?

hey I was just saying that we shouldnt laugh at his website too just because he made a comment most of the people here dont agree on.

serebii.net is a great website and if you have some interest in pokemon its probably the go to place. its also amazing how much work was put into it.

i think its unfair to dismiss someones work in general just because you dont agree with a forum post he made.
That post from Joe deserves a tag. Never have I seen a more ridiculous reason for hardware not selling.

The only thing that could "save" the Wii U at this point is what "saved" the PS3: a massive price drop and a willingness on Nintendo's part to bleed enormous amounts of money.

If Nintendo is willing to drop the price of the Wii U to 150 bucks and lose 5+ Billion dollars on the Wii U as Sony did on the PS3, I can see that having a dramatic effect on sales.

Barring that extremely unlikely scenario, I don't see any method for the Wii U to be any more than a marginal, niche product.
Missed one thing. Massive price drop is right, but also a steady stream of consistent exclusives which you probably implied but also a brand new marketing campaign. Sony completely revamped on that front with the "it only does everything", really got the message across.

But yeah I completely agree with everything you said, I think their BEST CASE SCENARIO doesn't even look that good.

I'm not sure a price drop will boost sales unless people actually find value in the product; retailers in the UK have already slashed £100 off the price and the sales haven't gotten any better.

The problem with comparing the Wii U to the PS3 is that the PS3 was an appealing product that was priced too high; the PS3 had mindshare, whereas the Wii U seems to have none.

People wanted the PS3, it was just priced too high. People don't even seem to care about the Wii U.

"I really want Pikmin 3! But it's so hot out... Ehh, maybe next week. My burning desire to own Pikmin 3 can wait."

For all the talk that Wii U's getting this week, looking at the top50 Vita has a serious problem again. All the leftovers are gone at this point and Toukiden is the only title it has in there. That's pretty worrying as I'm not sure if it's getting any notable releases till the autumn. We could see it dip below 10k, maybe.

Dreamcast used to sell ~5k per week on first months, like Wii U?

The sales trajectories for the Dreamcast + Wii U have been eerily similar to each other so far...with the Wii U underperforming.
