15-20k first week at best imo! Could be <10k.

You really don't think it can outsell some of the previous entries in the series? If it even hit 50K LTD that would be enough for that to happen. THis game is getting a movie & a manga. If either takes off in any way or even are a moderate success, at the very least there will be more people aware of the game, who hopefully are already Wii U owners. It'll have Hyrule Warriors & Bayo 2 right before it to get maybe a bit of interest going for the system too. But maybe I'm being too optimistic...

i would expect around 10k-15k for bayonetta 2 and about 20k for hyrule warriors to be honest (first week sales).

americans are more interested in those games than the japanese audience is, i think.

ouch, I expected bad but not Wonderful 101 bad for the 5th game in a series again ouch because I am not disagreeing with you

the best-selling fatal frame in japan was the fourth one. the fifth one is getting by far the biggest marketing push, but it's on the wii u. it will be interesting if it manages not to be the worst-selling game in the series (barring the xbox stuff).

2 months before release you show your first trailer, nope Nintendo is hardly marketing this game. It has a movie and a manga tie in but they are hardly related as they have different casts and locations

Kadokawa has so really silly dreams about were this IP could go that Hollywood producer bit was very telling

Well, let's be honest, Nintendo is basically losing money on many of these core titles just to try to diversify their lineup more. It certainly doesn't look like it's working very well, but I'm happy to see them waste their money to make stuff which otherwise won't be made just to satisfy a small fanbase.

Xenoblade is certainly not a game which any publisher would really be happy with ~200k in sales. Considering how poorly the WiiU is doing, going ahead with a sequel which looks even more ambitious and expensive is really foolish economically. But as a first party, they're able to not look at that and just commit to a range of titles hoping things work out in the end. If big titles which people are willing to buy can offset the cost, losing money just to create a wider range is a valid strategy in this case. It's similar to how Sony can lose money on stuff like Puppeteer I guess.

Definitely. Between Project Zero 5, Xenoblade X, Bayonetta 2 and Devil's Third Nintendo has quite a lot of games up in its sleeves that are unlikely to make its budgets back. The Zero series always seems to be the odd one out to me, though. It's the fourth game in the series by Nintendo despite none of the previous ones actually selling all that well.

Nintendo didn't give much attention to Xenoblade back in the day, but with Xenoblade X they're using the game worldwide to show off the graphical capabilities of the Wii U. I honestly think Xenoblade's great reception outside of Japan really is what Xenoblade X made possible in its current form, since it might not be selling well, but people are paying attention and they're able to use it as a showcase now. But the same's not true for Project Zero. Despite funding Project Zero 4, the remake of 2 and now the fifth entry they don't seem to regard it as a showcase title at all. They barely seem to even care about its fate outside of Japan - heck, for some reason Spirit Camera seems to be the only game in the franchise that Nintendo actually kinda cared for. Spirit Camera ffs! I'd really love to know what's going on behind the scenes between Nintendo and Tecmo Koei.

Anyway, with a Hollywood movie on the horizon the future of the series will be interesting to look at. TK (and Kadokawa) are probably hoping that the series will take off due to their new cross-media plans - and if that actually happens and if the Hollywood move might actually becomes success, are they still going to work together with Nintendo? Will they try to reach a wider audience in the west? Might they even be working together with Nintendo to make a more westernized version of the current game?

20k for hyrule warriors would be awful, 10 times that is more likely

Kadokawa may have some Hollywood ambitions but I think they are using the wrong IP for it. Until I see I western film trailer I can't really say but unlike Resident Evil we never saw guns or kung fu kicks from these girls

The Ring was pretty successful back in the day, wasn't it? I think they might hope that Fatal Frame could become sort of a successor to that in terms of popularity. I don't thnk there's been a popular Japanese-style horror movie in quite a while, so I guess they hope that the market's open to that kind of novelty again.

Horror is a pretty bad IP for videogames these days, but still a pretty smart genre for films. They can be made for very low budgets, and there's always an audience out there so it's not hard to make a good profit. I don't think Kadokawa really has any big ambitions here. They're a big company with a lot of different projects and this is just one of them. They'll make their money back for sure. Nintendo on the other hand... might not really benefit much from it at all.

I dunno, it might work quite well considering the fairly recent popularity of the Paranormal Activity series and other supernatural horrors (Insidious and the like). Knock together a trailer like those films use (creepy figures in the dark lurking behind/above/in the mirror, quick cuts, jump scares and screams, maybe some audience reaction stuff and "SCARIEST FILM EVAR!" review quotes) and release around Halloween and it could work.

as was posted in another thread DREAMWORKS had a Fatal Frame project 10 years ago it never came out of the planning stages

I feel they might have missed the timing but could be wrong but success does not mean Nintendo suddenly gets shutout of publishing the IP or forced to change the IP to fit western films

And next week June's Digital Sales. :)

I still think the Japanese version of the film the one they showed off is more of the kind of film maybe the fans of the games want to see

but a Hollywood film would only borrow the name and the camera idea and run with it, no very hard to make a scary movie a success it does not even have to be very good to be a box office hit sadly but fortunately for Kadokawa and TK

Quite a few people own a 3DS and is unhappy with its thirdparty support, and therefore wants more japanese thirdparties to produce games for it. It has nothing to do with "wanting every game on a Nintendo-system".

If you have seen the post history of the people who are arguing that NIS, Falcom and Gust should "logically" make their next titles on the 3DS, you would realize that it has everything to do with "wanting every game on a Nintendo system".

I see. So one fanservice game really is all the data you can point to it seems. Which also sold mediocre on Vita anyway.

If it makes you happy ignoring all the examples of games from NIS, Gust and Falcom doing nothing on DS and the non-existence of any series that migrated from PSP/Vita to 3DS and increased dramatically their sales, then you can keep believing that migrating to 3DS is the logically thing to do for every company, including Sony.

Really? Some agendas as well?
Nothing to do with the fact that there probably won't be another handheld on the market apart from a Nintendo one?

Of course most games will (try to) transition to home consoles, but it doesn't they won't try handhelds as well.

No way Hyrule Warriors does 200k first week. 100k at most and I think that's still generous.

I'm ready to eat crow if it exceeds that, but I'd be seriously surprised.

Yeah I'm with this. I'm going to put myself out there and say Hyrule Warriors will debut above 90k. No clue about Fatal Frame.

200k is a hell of a lot more likely than 20k though, personally I'm expecting about 140k

I would have to agree the amount of pushing Tecmo Koei has done with Hyrule Warriors it deserves a better than 20k release

but I would be happy with 60k

200k seems like an LTD number to me. I'm just looking at were 3D World is on the WiiU so I'll feel bad if Hyrule Warriors was able to pull 200k first week seems impossible on WiiU in Japan

200k LTD in Japan they will need the rest of the world regions to hit the 1M mark

No agenda, it is just the only console wars stuff. The argument has been there for a long time.

People are not arguing that when Vita stops being a relevant platform, these companies ought to migrate somewhere, and somewhere may be a future Nintendo handheld if it has a good reception. People are arguing that these companies should start moving to 3DS now, because Youkai Watch has shown that third party games can sell millions on 3DS and that the logical step for every company is to migrate to Nintendo systems if they want to remain in the market.

did not know WiiU went UP 14 sales on Famitsu YES!!!

the little victories for the little WiiU that could

what was the lowest WiiU weekly sales?

Looks like Puzzle & Dragons Z shipped 1.5 million units in Japan (retail + digital). Two things to say :

- Puzzle & Dragons W coming to the 3Ds next year?
- hey GungHo, forgot the West?

hehe, I've won.

Did you predict 400.000 LTD? I'm still waiting for Brain Training 3 to show itself in some of these top 100 and see a 500.000 LTD bwahahaha (I wish).

3D World not having any legs is so depressing so be happy 3D Land fan

3D World is having legs (see FW and the LTD).

Not so bad numbers for Taiko Wii U (I suppose it'll make 200.000 LTD) and DK:TF crossed the 100.000 mark (awful numbers). Also amazed at GTA V numbers, with the Best Price and PS4 editions maybe it can cross the million mark... outstanding.

Yes.
Do you think that if the game had been released in november instead after christmas could have reach to higher sales thanks to Chrismas boost?

I've always thought that the japanese release date was a bad move. Nintendo games always sell better during christmas, not after.

a Mario game having legs in one that at least makes it into the top 20 every few weeks
I hope 3D World will sell a bit more this holiday

By the way, we should forget already about Media Create Top 1000 2013 on geimin, right?
There's no news about it. :(

I've always been a MC lover, but since there's missing data (the annual tops) and Famitsu tracks digital now, I think i'm going to the dark side.

So in the end Taiko Wii U wasn't nearly as much of a disaster as I thought. I mean the numbers aren't good but at least it's showing some legs.

Aostia

El Capitan Todd
But as a first party, they're able to not look at that and just commit to a range of titles hoping things work out in the end. If big titles which people are willing to buy can offset the cost, losing money just to create a wider range is a valid strategy in this case. It's similar to how Sony can lose money on stuff like Puppeteer I guess.

that's exactly the reason why I'll never understand people willing for N going third party. as if the Sega trauma I had to suffer wasn't enough

First, thanks for the Famitsu top 100.

Yeah, the Top 1000 situation is "worrying" this year. Geimin didn't even put up the Famitsu 2012 Top 1000. If Geimin doesn't update we have two options:

- someone in Japan can search online for the Media Create White Paper available in a nearby library. *wink wink*
- someone is gonna have to buy the MCWP eventually (maybe now, maybe years down the road when a used copy is cheaper...)

Big release of the week... Frozen??? lol
FC8AE029-BCD7-4BE7-9AC6-0D34B32F330A_zps8n9ho3mb.jpg

After just one day Frozen is the best selling Blu-Ray movie of all time in Japan:

1. Frozen: 661,000
2. Evangelion 2.22: 465,000
3. Evangelion 3.33: 403,000
4. Michael Jackson This Is It: 358,000
5. Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides: 245,000

The previous first day record was Evangelion 3.33 - 199,000
The previous first week record was Evangeltion 2.22 - 357,000

http://www.oricon.co.jp/news/2039878/full/

As for YW2, it'll probably get a new shipment on the weekend. (Frozen will only get a new shipment on Amazon Japan on August!)

And the last thing I have to say, Cave is gonna bring their shmups to the 3DS any minute now...

That doesn't matter though. Personal feelings have nothing to do with business reality. If Nintendo can't make profitable hardware anymore as the market evolves, that'll still be something they have to consider eventually. Either that or slowly go out of business I guess, but as a listed company shareholders are not going to stand by and let the directors willingly raze the company to the ground.

Smash Bros Wii U 2014 hopefully(November?)

Not a bad release schedule.

not too shabby. this will, at least, keep the Wii U above 8k/week with bumps for release weeks.
it's sad that that's a win for a home console now

hopefully all of these different games will result in a bigger holiday bump for the Wii U

Not many people are really suggesting this happen now. We're too deep into the cycle for it to make much sense and all these companies have already built their audiences on Vita.

I'm asking you for examples of likeminded or similar titles that underperformed on 3DS, since that's what you claimed originally was the business disincentive and justification for NIS and Falcom to ignore the platform. You seem continually incapable of actually citing any relevant examples though.

Also fyi, it's really easy to ignore Falcom's DS efforts when they made a grand total of zero games on the platform.

Famitsu Top 100 First Half of 2014:
62. [WIU] Taiko no Tatsujin: Wii U Version! # <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) N{2013.11.21} (¥5.480) - 66.364 / 162.440

I'm curious, how it compares now to the others entries in the series? That numbers sounds fine for me.

The game is having Taiko legs, just on a smaller scale. It may also help that Bandai Namco had shipped over 160k copies for December 2013 (the Wii U game is even cheaper than the previous Wii game on Amazon, for instance).

Now that the news is out with a release date, I have no clue what sales to expect in Japan for Fatal Frame 5

Worst entry was 42k and best entry was 73k.

However this is the WiiU so I'm guessing it will be worst selling in the series. However there is the movie this time. It is possible for the movie to give this franchise some life.

With people I intended pretending videogame users, not shareholders ;p
and that matters, on the other side of things.
exaclty for the reasons you posted, it's very unlikely that N will take care of smaller projects if they'll become third party (especially third party projects of course), because not being a first party anymore they will not have any interest in taking care of the aspects you listed above.

After just one day Frozen is the best selling Blu-Ray movie of all time in Japan:

1. Frozen: 661,000
2. Evangelion 2.22: 465,000
3. Evangelion 3.33: 403,000
4. Michael Jackson This Is It: 358,000
5. Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides: 245,000

The previous first day record was Evangelion 3.33 - 199,000
The previous first week record was Evangeltion 2.22 - 357,000

Mmm the second option it's not gonna happen xD that book costs more than 33.000 yen. I could buy a Wii U instead lol
I will try to do the library thing. Seems tedious but it's the only option we have now... I don't promise anything, though.

The Frozen news are amazing o_O

I think you misunderstand. I'm saying that when we discuss the business of the industry here, it's pointless letting personal feelings get in the way of objective critique. It's possible to look at something objectively and say "well maybe the company should do this if they want to survive" without it being related to personal desire or gaming preference.

Oh, I agree.
I think it's objective saying that becoming third party would drammatically change Nintendo software output (in terms of first, secondo and "partnership" party)
