Media Create Sales: Week 29, 2011 (Jul 18 - Jul 24)

I wonder how Nintendo will advertise in the coming weeks. I would expect at least Layton and maybe Nintendogs to have a little comeback.

They still had thanks to 3DS Flare Red and maybe the new covers. We'll see.

The 3DS being at 15K means that it'll be slightly cheaper than the DS was from mid-2006 until fall 2010 or so.
DS sales didn't pick up until Mario Kart, Animal Crossing and Brain Training came out. The surge started with them, and the DS lite launch in the subsequent March took them up further. I really don't think price is the factor here. Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 should get things moving, but do they have anything like Touch Generations, and do they have a hardware revision? Because without them, it won't come close to DS numbers.

I think it's unrealistic to think that the casuals will continue to take up the 3DS just like they did with the DS. That is, until a killer Touch Generations title appears and blows everyone's little minds.

It's also true that with +6 million people bought Mario on DS, +5 million people bought Animal Crossing and Pokémon and +3 million Mario Kart it's unrealistic to think that no one will buy 3DS for at least the new entries of these series.

Some will of course but Nintendogs & Cats has shown us that a big DS hit does not necessarily equate to a big 3DS hit.

In that case it's simply because a type of audience is still not present on the device, but the game will be able to sell constantly as the installed base will grow up (in Japan it's one of the top selling game on 3DS).
But Mario and Mario Kart were able to sell millions even on GC, and with this renewed popularity, it seems obvious they will succeed.

I would put the very beginning with the shipment of Jump Super Star and red DS. Nintendogs after and Brain Training later. Animal Crossing and Mario Kart went out at the end of the year and from that moment sales went totally crazy.

Nintendogs +cats is out, but it may not be a good enough update to carry the system even with this price drop. Mario Kart sold as well as the touch generation games and before that Mario 64 DS was one of the top selling titles. If anything more software should be sold.

Mario 3DLand will move some systems if it is good and move a ton if it is great. Another NSMB game would move them better. The Pokemon spinoff may be a wild card. I have no idea how the WiiWare game sold but I guess it was enough for a retail release. May do better as a portable title too depending on how much content has been added and how good it turns out.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Price IS a big factor - DS couldnt have taken off if it was 25K yen, even if they had new innovative games. The biggest systemseller are worthless when the system to play them is prices too high. They needed this price point for 3DS to get games like Inazum 11 GO sellin, the way 3rd parties expected them to sell when they decided to put them on 3DS.

10K Yen price difference is huge in the handheld space, there is no need to downplay this decision.

I see what you're saying, but I don't think DS would have sold 30 million+ at ¥25,000, either.

I also don't think 3DS will sell near DS numbers, unless the generation lasts 10 years.

25,000 yen was a cocky launch price. But they were coming off the back of a massive success. They had seen that, even though they increased the price of each DS revision, it didn't hold back sales. Surely they misjudged that as an indication they could price the 3DS so high.

But the PSP wont get steamrolled by the 3DS even with this pricedrop. 3DS will probably sell more hardware compared to the PSP for some time, but i cant imagine that it will be steamrolling.

Agreed, psp has a lot of decent sellers lined up in the coming months that should make the hardware sales consistent.

On the other hand this is an unprecedented move and it is going to be very intersting (and pretty funny all things considered) to see a 5 months old, more powerful hardware selling cheaper than a 7 years old handheld. And we don't know how high the 3DS hardware sales will jump.

In my opinion, the timing for this price drop is not the best. I would have waited until the release of a bigger seller (Mario in November) or two/three weeks earlier because the 3DS lineup is pretty barren until then and I don't know if the price cut alone can sustain the sales outside of the few first weeks. But this is a massive price drop and could be what the consumers needed.

Yep, the PSP does indeed have some good content that will be enough to keep the PSP hardware sale good :)

A Mario + big pricedrop combo would probably be very effective indeed. I wonder if Nintendo did the pricedrop now in an attempt to get that "3DS is so expencive" mindset away as fast as possible. And maybe also to "hijack" as many potential PS Vita consumers as well before the PS Vita is released, those who are sitting on the fence and dont know to get a 3DS or a PS Vita.

So what are the chances that some older games like Star Fox and Tales see sales increases once the 3DS price drop happens?

Probably not very likely. A price drop will much more likely increase the sales of games which are more friendly to casual audiences as opposed to niche games with their own limited fanbase.

Eeeh what happened there Dengeki. 3 releases (original + budget + budget reprint):
MC: 205k + 45k + 30k = 280k
EB: 200k + 53k + 23k = 276k
Dengeki: ? + ? + ? = 364k

We can't say 'oh its just Dengeki as usual' either, Famitsu (EB) just had Taiko PSP at 110k debut when the other two agreed on 80-83k.

Oh well, maybe they pull a Meruru-Steins where the differences get smaller (by their 4th week both were within ~6k between all trackers, despite starting with up to 18-22k differences).

But Mario and Mario Kart were able to sell millions even on GC

But that didn't help the GC much. Hardware sales were terrible.

Wasn't Nintendogs the driving force behind the DS success? I remember the DS selling out everywhere at christmas 2005, and used Nintendogs being sold at incredible prices on Ebay. Mario Kart was already out, but all the kids wanted a DS for Nintendogs. Maybe things were different in Japan, though.

In Japan, Nintendogs lifted the system above crap levels to slightly better than PSP, but it didn't explode until Christmas that year with the releases of Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing and Brain Training 2. In the west, it was DS Lite combined with NSMB that was the catalyst.

Mpl90

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
I think the Price Kill will have great effects on the hardware sales (and for great I mean an increase in the average units sold not only for the first weeks) also due to the situation in Japan.
The tragedy of 11th March has hitten very badly the society, not only the economy.
Now,they are obviously recovering, but this is still a period where only products already on the market from years are not effected evidently by the times, while new products suffer, because people is still unsure and the recovery is still happening... especially if these new products have a premium price such as the 3DS.
So far 3DS has been bought especially by adults, people above 25-30 years old and with probably good economic certainties and/or great passion for games: we can see this by the limited (so far) sales of Nintendogs...almost all the mass audience is on DS,or is buying a PSP now, which are certainties at good prices.
Now,3DS will cost even lower than PSP and as much as DSi: this will force the ealry end of commercial life for DSi in the long period.
But , above all, this will allow all kinds of audiences to buy 3DS, and people will see this Price Kill much more favorably than in normal periods, just due to the post tragedy.
Moreover, they'll launch SPS. The first Pokemon game on the system, this will help without any doubt.
Games that will be helped by the Price Kill?
First of all Nintendogs
Then, Layton
Zelda, which now seems to be the software for 3DS
One Piece, one of the hottest anime/manga now
Abyss, because the drop will appeal the main audience for the series, females
Samurai Warriors
For the first two, we could see impressive grows: it all depends on the hardware (if 3DS does 100k the week of the Kill,we could see Nintendogs at 17-20k, for example... it rised to nearly 7k with the red model,so... )

Nintedogs being the title that changed the route of things for DS in Japan is the absolute myth in Media Create threads. Everywhere else it had an big impact, in Japan it was more helped from DS explosion than helped at DS explosion.

Yeah, DS was tracking to fall behind PSP again until Brain Training came out. Once Brain Training came out, the weekly sales stabilized at a higher level than they had been before, and that's when games showing stupid levels of legs came up. Every week, Nintendogs, Brain Training, and then Gentle Brain Training were selling like just released games. When New Year's came around with Mario Kart and Animal Crossing being released and Brain Training 2, it exploded and started the 1.5 years of sellouts.

Retailers report:

Slow week for new releases, only Queen's Blade and Devil Survivor 2 move some copies.

Next 2 weeks will be very low for 3DS, there isn't interest for the 20 free games. (gamesmaya shop only: preorders for the price cut models have started, flare red is the most popular).

Alone they didn't help, but I think that GC sold 21 million units thanks to Nintendo brands, and in particular to Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda and Super Smash.

Anyway, Nintendogs helped a bit DS in the first period, as other people have explained above.

So what are the chances that some older games like Star Fox and Tales see sales increases once the 3DS price drop happens?

Unlikely for those games, but I would expect to see a nice increase for Layton and Nintendogs. Those are the type of past games that will likely see a big boost from an increased user base.

Dengeki gave a Taiko 2 PSP update!...but they got the release date wrong saying it was Sep 2009 when it was 2006, anyway comparison-time:

Taiko no Tatsujin Portable 2 (PSP, 2006)
Code:
			M-Create	Dengeki Famitsu
1st Week 12,370 14,000 14,638
LTD 221,179 266,000 58,782
There's no yearly breakdown from Dengeki but we can see the discrepancy between MC and Famitsu with it:

Famitsu:
2006: 225. [PSP] Taiko Drum Master Portable 2 (Bandai Namco) {2006.09.07} - 58.782 / 58.782

Media Create:
2006: 255. [PSP] Taiko Drum Master Portable 2 (Bandai Namco) {2006.09.07} - 44.828 / 44.828
2007: 312. [PSP] Taiko Drum Master Portable 2 (Bandai Namco) {2006.09.07} - 42.253 / 87.081
2008: 208. [PSP] Taiko Drum Master Portable 2 (Bandai Namco) {2006.09.07} - 63.263 / 150.344
2009: 246. [PSP] Taiko Drum Master Portable 2 (Bandai Namco) {2006.09.07} - 44.962 / 195.306
2010: 346. [PSP] Taiko Drum Master Portable 2 (Bandai Namco) {2006.09.07} - 25.873 / 221.179
According to GDM:

Famitsu {2006-09-07} [PSP] Taiko no Tatsujin Portable 2 (Bandai Namco) - 14,638 / 233,267

So, Famitsu did some stealth update there along the way.

I wonder when they gave that update. Maybe it's from last week's Famitsu weekly when DX came out, when BKK posts the numbers we'll see.

At least they admitted they were undertracking it because going by yearly top 500/1000 it couldn't have sold neither half of that.

2007 CY {2007.01.01 - 2007.12.30} 500. [PS2] Capcom Classics Collection (Best Price!) (Capcom) {2007.10.11} - 19.749 / 19.749
2008 CY {2007.12.31 - 2008.12.28} 500. [PS2] Seaman 2 (Sega) {2007.10.18} - 18.937 / 80.815
2009 CY {2008.12.29 - 2009.12.27} 1000. [PS2] Final Fantasy XII: International Zodiac Job System (Ultimate Hits) (Square Enix) {2009.07.30} - 3.998 / 3.998
2010 CY {2009.12.28 - 2010.12.26} 1000. [NDS] TOEIC Test Super Coach at DS (Kirihara Shoten) {2010.02.25} - 3.808 / 3.808

Wow. This thread is even more dead when no one can figure out why the 3DS had a good week. I wonder what will happen to these threads after the price cut...

You said exactly the same thing last week. It becomes annoying.

It's an observation. No need to get pissy.

Though, I guess the real issue is that there isn't anything interesting to talk about in general. A very boring week.

This is a problem for Famitsu with a lot of older games, once sales drop below a certain point they just stop reporting any updates. Then if these games get any further shipments and get some legs Famitsu just ignores them.

It's better to use Media Create annual charts for older titles, just looking at the difference in sales at the bottom of the Top1000s shows how much Famitsu ignores;

2010 MC #1000 = 4.887
2010 FM #1000 = 3.808

2009 MC #1000 = 5.508
2009 FM #1000 = 3.998

Like Chris said, it's most probably from the Weekly Famitsu when DX charted, they usually show series sales for a new release each week. I haven't seen that issue yet though.

Seriously. Theres also a big difference between media create and dengeki.
Yeah. It still is the best debut ever for the series, but now it's a much more realistic number, considering the sales history.

As I expected, Rhythm Tengoku Wii is at the top, but has a way weaker first week than its predecessor. I haven't been able to play my copy yet, but I'd say the return to button controls and the usual Nintendo pattern of adding a seemingly important feature (2-player) but not supporting it full force (only a few games support it) are partly to blame. I mean, the freaking game is called "Everybody's Rhythm Heaven", how ironic is that? I'd also say a console release could have used more than 50 mini-games. 75-100 mini-games would have been nice.

Don't let anyone telling you that motion controls would have been horrible fool you. When it just comes to responsiveness (not precision movement), any old accelerometer would do the trick, and the vanilla Wiimote would have no problem handling that. Heck, I remember some people in the original SMG thread complaining that the Wiimote was actually TOO responsive (I guess they have Parkinson's disease or something). The few potential problems with that control scheme could easily be taken care of through clever design choices. I'd expect as much from Nintendo. At least it would be better than A+B. I could understand A and B being used as separate commands, but A and A+B doesn't make much sense to me. If you're going back to button controls, at least take your cues from the original games. The controls were much more sensible. But anyway, for this kind of rhythm games, actual motion controls sound like a no-brainer to me. Imagine someone tapping/clicking their fingers with a flick of the wrist. Feels natural. Feels visceral. Feels good, man. The fact that you hold the Wiimote in one hand with the current control scheme makes this oversight all the more absurd.

Also, Star Fox performing poorly is not surprising. It's a remake of an N64 game, give me a break. The series is dead because Nintendo is unable or unwilling to make a proper sequel. All Star Fox games since 64 have been poorly-designed in many ways, and the one that's well-designed is just a remake. Stop outsourcing the series, stop fiddling around. Just make a real StarFox games, possibly with Miyamoto at the helm.

And don't try and fit silly storylines or character relationships into it. It just doesn't work (Star Fox Command, anyone?). And Nintendo's not good at it, anyway. They're not storytellers at heart, they're game designers.

Revisionism! Oh well, guess its for the best (it was a pretty blatant case). Hopefully we get an overall look at the series as well (if its really from Famitsu magazine).

Price drop will definitely lift the 3DS sales. It doesn't take a genius to predict that. 3DS sales will not be spectacular, however, until we see some compelling mass market software.

The combo of Mario Kart and Mario 3D later in the year might be the spark the system needs to really push some numbers. However there is always the chance that those who already have a DS might not feel the need to upgrade for a long while yet and that the new 3DS does not offer a compelling enough feature set for them to make the purchase.

Certainly for many people the DSi or DSi LL is already "good enough" and Nintendo might have a tough time convincing casual audiences that they need to step up to the 3DS.

I'm curious to see 3DS sales in the price drop week.

It's almost a relaunch. It's crazy to think in sales of 100k+ ?
If it had Mario Kart it would hit 200k but with a low profile Pokemon spinoff as the "leading" title I doubt it will go to 6 digits unless the price drop has a bigger than expected effect.

Either way if it does big numbers Famitsu will report it from Monday.

Edit: amazon opened preorders for the new priced models. They were very low yesterday but they are rising now.

Flare Red: 76 -> 10
Aqua Blue: 235 -> 55
Cosmo Black: 300 -> 56

I really don't know what to expect but 6 digits don't seem that outrageous to me considering that this is a 10000Y pricedrop that puts the 3DS as the cheaper hardware in the market.
And stores are basically stopping selling 3DS hardware for two weeks, so we should see accumulated sales from these weeks.

Nintendo have made a drastic price cut because they expect sales to go up considerably and if these don't jump to >100k in the first week, how low the new weekly baseline is going to be?
I mean, you don't cut the price 5 months after launch and low enough until it becomes the cheapest hardware in the market to sell only 30-35k per week.
