Media Create Sales: Week 29, 2013 (Jul 15 - Jul 21)

Just a casual observer but doesn't the recent Vita sales increase indicate that even a console without major software releases can take a significant weekly sales jump if it is price cut. Iwata take note.

Does anyone have the new Vita price compared to the two WiiU SKU's in Yen ?. I'm wondering just how much cheaper Vita is.

Also interesting to see WiiU hit a million, how many weeks was that from launch and how did it compare with how long PS3 / Wii / 3DS / Vita took to get to a million. Will be interesting to see how long it takes PS4 to hit the same number in the coming year.

Many thanks if anyone has those stats to post.

Vita only stays up when there are games, few weeks back when there were none it was dropping. Not to pre cut levels but it wasn't good. Without games pricecut will be a very short bump.

Iwata take note at what? When they dropped the price for the 3DS they realized that a price cut alone is only a bandage, and corrected things by 1) lowering the price, 2) drop a short-term megaton (MH3G, MK7, etc), and 3) drop an unexpected long-term megaton (MH4). There's ample historical data that shows price cuts alone don't do a damn thing beyond a few weeks time.

Nintendo 3DS Conference was epic, will they host one for Wii U? I don't think they have enough third-party support...

That was the first time I saw promises selling hardware, lol. Monster Hunter its legendary power.

I think one is likely- I doubt they have the 3rd party support to show off, but they have enough 1st party stuff announced to make a decent splash IMO.

I don't think the price is that big of a problem for the Wii U tbh. The Wii launched at ¥25,000 (basic Wii U is ¥26,250 for comparison, PS3 is ¥24,980) and yet it sold extremely well, in fact Nintendo didn't drop the price on the Wii until late 2009, 3 years after the system launch.

I agree that the Wii U need a price cut in the west but the price is already low in Japan.

I don't think it can hurt- no one buys the basic so essentially the price is ¥31,000.

I had no idea the WiiU price was already pretty low in Japan tbh, very worrying then as I don't see any of the games for the rest of the year spiking sales to any major degree.

Zelda, Mario and DKC are far more likely to spike sales in America and the EU imo.

I think this speaks volumes about the console market in Japan right now, when compared with handhelds. None of these franchises are going to pull genuinely big numbers on Wii U, and Mario is supposed to be a pretty big deal there.

Nintendo's only hope is to come up with another sensation like Wii Sports, which really moves hardware, because the same ol' IP which exist on both 3DS and Wii U will not sell units of the latter.

Unless a miracle happens and Lego or TW101 takes off, the best case scenario is that Wii U stays 8~12K between now and Zelda, and then follows into the holidays with Wii Fit, Party, & Mario. Unless they have a fall conference/Direct where they pull a E3 2011 (although I'm not sure what they could pull out of their hats like that).

2014 might be better, with Smash, Kart, Bayo, X, DK, Art Academy, and so on but it'll b a tough road without actual 3rd party support of some kind. There's also F2P Steel Diver, and the new IP Miyamoto keeps pimping, I suppose.

I still think DKCR:TF will be 2013, and I wouldn't be shocked if we saw Taiko Wii U.

I think Wii U could have a decent holiday.

I think Wii U could have a decent holiday.

Until otherwise stated by NCL, there's no evidence or reason to believe that'll be the case though. Taiko is possible, and would be a good boost for family sales over the new years break.

Wii U will do decently over the holiday, I imagine. I should hope it won't be worse than the Vita last year. Some of that depends on PS4's release date and line-up in Japan.

I'm as confused as everyone else. Wasn't the third one supposed to be the best of the games released so far? You would think that would bode well for the opening sales of number 4.

Maybe it's franchise fatigue?

To speak for myself: Despite the good review scores, I just can't get excited for M&L4. The story seem to have zero stakes and the gameplay doesn't look that interesting/fun.

Franchise fatigue? It's been four and a half years lol. That cannot be why. I think it's a combination of digital sales making up a greater proportion than normal, making physical retail charts such as these make the game look like it's selling worse than it actually is, and also I think a lot of people are biding their time for Pokemon X/Y and MH4, which are not too far off. Just a few months.

If sales of Vita games like Monster Monpiece or Demon Gaze are to be believed, digital sales account for a sensible percentage.

and what percentage would that be?

It shouldn't matter what lineup PS4 has. VITA's biggest game for Nov and Dec last year was AKB1/149: Love Election. If Wii U can not have a better holiday than VITA last year with a Mario game, Wii U is done.

EDIT:

Nope, that's just people confusing sold with shipped, and not taking into account the data's reporting period.

Don't burst the bubble. Sony executive also said 1/3 VITA software sold digitally. So we should add 50% for all sale numbers for physical copies.

Dissapointing drop for Pikmin 3 and WiiU. Expected a bit better hold as Monday was a holiday I believe.

Pretty bad for M&L. While 100k on its own is decent, it also had a bundle which the previous games did not. Luigi saturation? Ultra casual audience picked up BiS in droves and are no longer on 3DS? Released too soon after Paper Mario? (even though that was more of an adventure RPG than a pure RPG)

I honestly don't see how/why people would have expected Pikmin to do better. Given the current WiiU ecosystem, the sales of its previous iterations, and maybe (?) some e-Shop sales, did you really expect something significantly higher?

M&L should be fine. It'll have monster legs I'm sure... unless Pokemon and Mon Hun eat into everything for a while.

Is it possible for MC/Famitsu to start tracking digital sales as well? It'd be interesting to see Vita/WiiU software sales on the digital front.

Also isn't Pikmin 3 having a 10% discount sale in Japan right now? Makes me even more interested in the digital sales.

This was around TGS time if I'm remembering correctly, so if they do have one it'll probably be in September most likely in the form of a Direct. Was there a Direct before TGS last year? I don't quite remember.

Yes a special edition Luigi 3DS with M&L preinstalled on it. Does anyone know if sales of the bundle are included in the game sales? I've been lurking/posting in media create threads for years now and I know this always gets asked so I feel bad in not remembering.

Thank you.

Nintendo should give TW101 as big of a push as they gave Pikmin. The games just looks fun and should be easy to advertise. It will still bomb, but I still want to see them do it.

Haven't read the full thread yet. But people saying that M&L poor performance is caused for the lower userbase, piracy, stock problems, digital sales being huge... (and wave heat)

Please, open your eyes...

M&L has a huge amount of unsold
stock. Unless something unexpected happens price collapse will start
soon. It doesn't appear to have shown big growth after first day sales.

DKR and LM2 fight. The next couple of weeks I won't upload this chart because DKR left the MC top 20 until Golden Week. But the trend is LM2 might surpass DKR.

I remember being laughed at in a Media Create thread for suggesting LM2 would sell 1m in Japan. It's getting closer and closer. It might not reach it, certainly not any time soon, but it seems it wasn't the ridiculous prediction it was made out to be.

400k Shipments, wow!

Nintendo seemed confident that they would be able to sell as much based on the whole "Year of the Luigi" but it seems to have backfired.

Doesn't really matter to Nintendo because retailers can't return copies.
For Japanese market shipped copies = money already made for vendors.

25% sell through for a Mario game in Japan !?

What the...

Any major reasons behind this and what were the reviews like?

Reviews were good.

It will definitely sell through its first shipment this year. It should outsell the first 2 M&L games, but BiS seems like it won't be beaten.

Something I've been curious about is what sell-through rate is considered healthy? Obviously a low ST like 25% is bad, but a high one like 90% suggests stock problems and that you undershipped, which can also hamper sales.
