Media Create Sales: Week 29, 2013 (Jul 15 - Jul 21)

Top 100 Software, first half of 2013

13 PSV
32 3DS
27 PS3
5 Wii U
15 PSP
7 Wii
1 Nintendo DS
0 Xbox 360

Damn it, no 360 title in the Top 100 and just 1 DS. PSP is still strong in Japan, it seems.

BBS and even 358/2 did much better. With the dev costs being lower and being tied up with Versus/15 the handheld games provided a nice return. I think KH3 should have made it out on ps3/360 though and DDD was pushing it.
I think DDD was the point when KH fans pretty much said 'fuck this'. It didn't help that the game wasn't as good as BBS, you had to buy another new console for it or that it seemed to have been pretty rushed. Also one of my biggest gripes with KH is that graphically and from the technical perspective the games have been stuck to the PS2-era thanks to jumping from PS2 to PSP and then to 3DS, kinda like what MH has done.

Well then, time to revisit this post. Striking the ones I got wrong. Mixing with MC Top 1000 2012.

Hmm, looking at software sales, games like Toukiden doing surprisingly well,do people now still question the value of the Vita's price cut earlier in the year. I recall quite a few people did after its grace period before it began declining towards pre-cut levels.

Hmm, looking at software sales, games like Toukiden doing surprisingly well,do people now still question the value of the Vita's price cut earlier in the year. I recall quite a few people did after its grace period before it began declining towards pre-cut levels.
Well the price cut pretty much elevated Vita into a niche territory which is pretty good considering what its sales were prior to it. It allowed for the audience to build up for the monster hunting games (as well as otaku games) and we're seeing a first success story, Toukiden on the platform. I mean Tecmo must be pretty happy with those sales.

Basically I will say that Sony managed to revive Vita from the dead to a niche status in Japan. This was thanks to a combination of price cut, creating an original new IP with a lot of hype and marketing (a first for SCEJ in a long time) and making it extremely easy to port to Vita from PSP and PS3 (a move which is pretty much genious in hindsight). I mean the platform still has many challanges ahead:

1. It needs a stream of games and not scenarios like the last couple of weeks where it had 1 game in top 50.
2. It needs for all the PSP developers to start moving to the Vita (though this is probably unrealistic and they'll probably end up on the 3DS for the most part).
3. It needs an AAA franchise, whether it is FF, GT, DMC, RE, MGS or anything like that. Maybe FF X and X-2 HD will end up having good sales and might push the platform more.
4. It needs to prove that it can foster JRPGs. If it gets this niche covered then it'd have: Monster Hunting, Otaku and JRPGs and it can definitely live for 5 years quite well. So far, the stories are a bit of mix-bag of success and failure (Tales remake v Person 4 Golden).

As for the West. Well if Sony can allow for the Vita to have this niche in Japan with a few notable mid-tier franchises and create a big localisation team to bring these to the West, it can even make it somewhat survivable in the West too.

That is a huge number of ifs though, and any one of them can go super wrong.

Wow, this month there's almost nothing big. Maybe just Disney Magic Castle.

So is that supposed to be big?
Never heard of it, as well as Conception 2, besides I know little about One piece and Super robot wars' games aside from the titles, as if they're main titles or just spin-offs, so I guess I'll have to edit my predictions accordingly after some research.

I barely knew nothing about Killer is Dead and I've decided to watch its new trailer. And after watching it my reaction was... WTF? This thing cannot sell more than 20.000 - 30.000 units lol.

P.S. Adjusting down my prediction.

Could have been worse for Pikmin/ Wii U. Of course, it could have been a lot better too...

It will probably be under 10k in 2 weeks. I would say Nintendo's best hope is it doesn't fall to the 4-5k depths it reached earlier.

But then you've got at least 1 Nintendo title releasing per month from now until Christmas. It may have sales under 10K per week for a couple of weeks each month but you should have sales spiking for at least 2 weeks when the likes of The Wonderful 101, Wii U Party, Wind Waker HD, Donkey Kong, Wii Fit U and Super Mario 3D World are released. There's also a good showing from third parties during Q3-Q4 too with Rayman Legends, Splinter Cell, Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed IV, Batman Arkham Origins, Scribblenauts (Unlimited finally for those of us unlucky enough to live in Europe and the Marvel one for those lucky enough to live in the States), Call of Duty Ghosts, Deus Ex and Sonic Lost World.

The Wii U should have much healthier sales from now on. I still think it's going to have an installed userbase over 8m before the end of the year.

These were the 3 best-selling Xbox 360 games during the first half of the year:

I feel this is a pretty good summary of the current Japanese industry.

There's one successful handheld, one successful console, a few fading platforms from last gen, and a secondary handheld/secondary console fighting over scraps from the winners.

I do notice the Sony platforms seem to have longer legs, but I'm guessing this is due to the higher price points giving them slower starts, and the hurdles of getting used to new technology causing them to get games later than they otherwise would.

That said, that could be at an end with the Vita given it would be hard to live past the start of the next generation given the rate they're going, especially once the PSP and PS3 games start drying up.

Sony and MS design their platforms to last far longer than Nintendo. Not sure Nintendo doesn't do the same though.

It hasn't even sold its first shipment yet.

First trilogy:

[NDS] Professor Layton and the Unwound Future - 868.559

[3DS] Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle - 394.003
[3DS] Professor Layton and the Legacy of Civilization A - 231.353

Neither has Metal Gear Rising. It opened with a decent 1st week percentage too. The legs just really dropped off.

Yall have no faith in TW101 :(

1) Kamiya tweeted publicly that he was concerned about Nintendo not marketing TW101 enough (domestically + internationally)

2) There's the ever-looming "Western-oriented title" stigma attached to it

3) Wii U has a low install-base

4) Low media presence / low hype

5) Viewtiful Joe only managed 33K its first week

6) New IP with no existing fanbase

7) Slightly confusing game to market / explain

Yeah...there are good reasons why some people don't have much faith in the title succeeding in its debut week.

Hmm, looking at software sales, games like Toukiden doing surprisingly well,do people now still question the value of the Vita's price cut earlier in the year. I recall quite a few people did after its grace period before it began declining towards pre-cut levels.

*raises hand*

It's certainly had more of an impact on the weekly baseline than I expected, but that baseline is still a long way from "good" (I'd guesstimate that 20K/week, or around where 3DS was before the price cut, would be the threshold for "finding its niche" levels), and I'm not convinced that the price cut had that much of an impact on software sales. None of the major-ish recent Vita releases have had particularly impressive legs, and the overall software ecosystem is a long ways from healthy, as demonstrated by Toukiden being the only Vita title in the top 50,

[PS3+360] Killer Is Dead (25 days) - 45,000
[3DS] Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life (25 days) - 107,000
[3DS] One Piece: Romance Dawn - Bouken no Yoake (18 days) - 95,000
[PS3+PSV] Super Robot Wars OG Saga: Masou Kishin III (4 days) - 120,000
[3DS+PSV] Conception II: Shichisei no Michibiki to Mazuru no Akumu (4 days) - 56,000
[WIU] The Wonderful 101 (2 days) - 17,500
If TW101 and bayonetta 2 bomb like everyone expects what do you guys expect platinum will do next?

Do more established ips or fall apart i guess
Make TW102 and Bayonetta 3 for the 3DS, duh.

Yuck...

Vita showed that it had pretty strong attach rate and potential to be a healthy system but it NEEDS a big hitter.

A game that will revitalize the outlook on the system.

Something like Dragon Quet 8 HD or Type-1.

Will it happen? It only depends how much Sony wants to salvage the system.Vita just has a chance in Japan and it would be a shame to waste it.

It's by no means guaranteed for success but it might be a good idea for platinum to start making some small downloadable games put them on every platform and see how that turns out.

I agree with everything but number 1. I think that's just Kamiya striking again.

And could you into more detail about 2? I've never thought of the title as western oriented.
