Well, a second season for the anime was confirmed... maybe they should simply wait until then in order to release the game ;)

Or maybe actually makes the game better? I mean, they can simply copy pasted FE or AW series here. It should not be that difficult here.T_T

Simultameous release will eat many sales of PS4 version in case it came out at a different date later, there is no doubt for that. I guess SE doesn't want to turn the main entry into an episode festival.

Hmmmm. Chris. So do u see this move is much better move or Smash 3D vs WiiU release style is better? Where one release earlier then the bigger one release later.

I myself is more on Smash style here as the buffer time on each release will be able to give some refresh type to make the same thing feel new again. Not to mention for Jrpg which had tons of play time, i don't think many will choose the more expensive console version which can't be played on the go.

All right, now that I have some time and it's not 3 AM in the morning.

1.) For Dragon Quest XI, I think they made about the best possible platform setup they could have given the market. They needed a 3DS version to have it actually sell in Japan, and it looks notably high effort. Making a separate PS4 only version let Horii make a high end console game, helps push the system for Square's other titles, and a PS4-only game that takes advantage of an engine like Unreal Engine 4 has a better chance of succeeding in the West than a PS3/PS4 cross-gen game does. The NX version lets them bring the PS4 version to a system that has a good chance of selling quite a bit better in Japan than the PS4 will and thus hit an even broader market (and get more double dippers). This also sets them up well with art assets and technology to use for both future PS4 and NX Dragon Quest games.

2.) The current state of the Japanese dedicated market has two clear winners: Epic and Unity. This will be even more true once the NX comes out and further so as the 3DS/PS3/Vita finally sunset.

3.) About a month or so ago, I made two arguments. The first was I felt that - as the viability of the PS3/Vita/3DS faded - we would start to see PS4/NX become a thing due to there simply only being one viable console and one viable handheld in the market, with the Western market wanting consoles games and the domestic market wanting handheld games. Of course, there are also audiences within both regions that want games on the other type of platform as well. Given the amount of titles we saw on PS4/PS3/Vita, being able to serve this ideal of offering both a home console and portable version of Japanese games didn't seem to have other great options. Now, obviously we only have two titles here as examples, but I still feel pretty good about this prediction applying to a sizable number of titles, especially compared to the number of games that are on both Sony and Nintendo platforms currently.

4.) The other argument I made was that the amount of Japanese PS4 games Square Enix was announcing was not only the result of them wanting to appeal more abroad, but because of where they felt their strength lied. Given the company is doubling down on both licensed technology and (domestic) industry leading production values, the 3DS was simply a poor fit. This didn't strike me so much as a long lasting, heavy handed strategic partnership with a console vendor so much as them simply putting their products where they felt they made the most sense. I proposed that once the NX was announced, we would see a lot of Square Enix games show up there as well, since now they would have a system that could both deliver on their production values and work with their licensed technology. They're already up to two titles and the system is 6+ months from being revealed.

5.) Dragon Quest of the Stars (iOS/Android) looks very good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Kgmb_k3q5U&feature=youtu.be&t=1068 This will be an important one to watch in Square Enix's quest to make progressively deeper and higher production value mobile games. Dragon Quest has a pretty good performance record on mobile as well, adding to the intrigue, and the production values seem manageable enough that it will likely launch with much more content than Mobius did.

So we're looking at this for 3DS in 2016

Metroid Prime Federation Force
Dragon Quest XI
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros.
Monster Hunter Stories
Yo-Kai Watch 3
Zero Escape 3
Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3

Not too bad for its 5th year, I believe Etrian Odyssey 5 doesn't have a release date yet, so maybe that one too, also the Yokai Watch/Romance of the three kingdoms thing and of course Pokemon.

Nintendo is really pushing Splatoon, this new update is just getting bigger and bigger.

----

Anyway, asked my friend for her opinion on DQXI and she pretty much agreed it will end up like Smash did no matter how they release them, too many people that she knows just don't care about buying a home console (or have the time for it) and the 3DS version is an auto-easy out. The really big fans who have to have the prettiest version will get it for PS4 (but they already own it) but she thinks most people will just get one version with most just getting the 3DS out of convenience same as ended up being the case with Smash3DS. Also she's pumped for the 2D top-down view on the 3DS.

Square Enix and Dragon Quest.

related to all these points, I think I have one question.

could Square Enix finally have finally understood both hardware makers and thirds parties have to put an equal amount of effort to keep the japanese industry alive?

I believe that the japanese console enviorment is doing so poorly due to 3rd parties having this idea of "first you sell 10-20 million pieces of hardware, THEN I'll consider putting my AAA game or putting exclusive on it". That has brought down everything to its knees, particularly PS4, Vita and WiiU.

this seems to me like an effort from SE to help... everyone, to help Japan in general. They are using the Dragon Quest brand to try to breathe some air into the japanese videogame life

The fact that they consider NX, which has sold exactly zero units so far, speaks volumes about it.

Well they're concerned about market difference between Japan and other areas so I understand if they want to make Japanese market more console-focused to, given that console games can be sold at higher retail price. I wonder how SE's earnings are split between Japanese and Western market.

6th year, actually. The system released in February 2011, and 5 years after that is February 2016, so most of 2016 is actually the system's 6th year. Which makes that software support even more impressive.

The way I see it, the reason Dragon Quest X for PS4 and NX exists is because all of the dedicated devices it's currently on are nearing EOL or already EOL. As such, adding PS4 and NX versions places the game on platforms that will be able to sustain an audience for at least another 5+ years.

The PS3 on the other hand is a nigh EOL platform, and Dragon Quest X runs on an engine originally built for the Wii, so it's neither an easy port, nor one that achieves the main objective of the newly announced ports.

related to all these points, I think I have one question.

could Square Enix finally have finally understood both hardware makers and thirds parties have to put an equal amount of effort to keep the japanese industry alive?

I believe that the japanese console enviorment is doing so poorly due to 3rd parties having this idea of "first you sell 10-20 million pieces of hardware, THEN I'll consider putting my AAA game or putting exclusive on it". That has brought down everything to its knees, particularly PS4, Vita and WiiU.

this seems to me like an effort from SE to help... everyone, to help Japan in general. They are using the Dragon Quest brand to try to breathe some air into the japanese videogame life

The fact that they consider NX, which has sold exactly zero units so far, speaks volumes about it.
I do suspect this factored in, yes.

While traditional Japanese game publishers are overwhelmingly very partial to growing mobile and digital heavy businesses given the current direction of the market and the margin benefits of doing so, ultimately they still have a ton of staff that's primarily skilled at making retail-esque dedicated device games. This is also where much of their brand value still lies, even among publishers that are now gaining strong digital revenue arms. And, when push comes to shove, once you reach a certain level of success in mobile and digital, it becomes easier to grow in the dedicated space than it does to keep growing infinitely in the digital space.

Given this, traditional Japanese publishers largely want dedicated devices to survive. While I think they all knew that not being there at launch or not showing up with a strong line-up was negatively impacting the platforms, I don't think many of them realized that it was actually going to straight up kill the market. Now that this has become completely self evident, and the impact of Western third parties going all in on the PS4/XB1 starting at launch was clear, they felt they should actually step up and help ensure they have more than just a mobile market to sell games in.

Certainly things like licensed technology, modernized development methodologies, and a realization that they were never going to be big players in the West (and thus shrinking their team sizes back down and outputting a larger number of smaller games) contributed to their ability to do this, but the core impetus ultimately has to relate back to their business objectives and the fact they would like dedicated devices to be a part of that. For those that don't, they would simply take the route Konami did and completely exit the market by now instead of focusing heavily on both dedicated devices and mobile.

And ultimately, time has made clear that you have to have to be willing to launch a lot of failures in order to find success in mobile, so being willing to put out games that aren't going to earn as much as they could in the dedicated space puts you in the same spot anyway. There's no longer a location where you can release games without being willing to eat into your margins in order to invest in future success.

Dragon Quest in and of itself is interestingly a microcosm of this situation. Just look at their existing line-up of games.

Dragon Quest X ports: This is an investment in maintaining ratable digital/subscription revenue.
Dragon Quest XI 3DS: Major flagship title targeted at existing, very safe, and reliable market for the company.
Dragon Quest XI PS4/NX: Major investment in both the future and potentially Western expansion.
Dragon Quest Monster Battle Scanner: Arcade game, which is an investment in both selling hardware and in earning fees from the amusement sector.
Dragon Quest of the Stars: Newest major investment in the f2p mobile space where high margin digital revenue is found and the most money is made in the domestic market.
Dragon Quest Heroes 2: Follow-up to a successful brand extension on dedicated devices targeted at existing, highly engaged gamers, as well as fans of a popular genre.
Dragon Quest VIII 3DS: Monetizing the back catalog with a re-release.
Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3: Continuing to invest in a previously existing, successful brand extension into the popular monster capturing genre on dedicated devices. Targets younger gamers especially well.
Dragon Quest Builders: Investment in the emerging builder genre that has proven quite popular in Japan, but is not nearly as saturated as in other markets, meaning there's an even stronger opportunity here than normal.

On that note, wow, there's a lot of upcoming Dragon Quest games.

Regarding if NX gets the Unreal version or 3DS version of DQXI, I want to believe that it's easier to port an UE4 title to NX than porting a 3DS title to NX.

I think the best argument in favor of it being a port of the UE4 game is simply looking at the amount of Japanese games running on Unreal Engine 4.

There's a huge potential market for Epic if they make UE4 work on NX. All those developers using their own custom engines on 3DS are potential new licensees, or an opportunity to sell even more licenses to their existing customers.

Mark Rein has been very clear over the years that the two requirements for your platform to receive Unreal Engine are 1.) it meets the hardware requirements and 2.) there is a sizable audience of people who would actually consider licensing the engine to develop for the platform. Given how UE4 scales to mobile, unless the NX uses 5+ year old hardware, the first requirement should be covered. It would be hard to imagine there's no demand for the second.

Unreal provides compilable source code, and is very scalable up or down. Handheld NX, and console NX especially, will be able to run it with lowered graphical settings unless Nintendo makes a 50$ NX, which is highly, highly unlikely. The 150-200$ price range that is likely to house the NX will be modern hardware with all necessary requirements to run Unreal and make the port from PS4 incredibly easy... (it might not even be a port if it comes out on time for NX launch). Now, Epic and Nintendo may have had some bad blood over SVOGI and one of the Unreal heads laughing at the WiiU, but that's long since passed and SVOGI cratered as a total failure.

They're not going to re-write the 3DS version for anything, that's needlessly complicated work. From the looks of it, it might even be built on Nintendo/Bamco's Smash engine which is specifically built to the literal metal of the 3DS. Retooling that for any other hardware would be a damn nightmare.
Then again, Shin'en coded FAST to the metal of the WiiU, and they want it on the NX... but they are crazy.

What about the PS4 version of DQXI, then? It doesn't look scalable to mobile to me (unless I'm wrong and they did an amazing job), and I can't see it running on a Nintendo Handheld next year. Unless DQXI is 2017 when the Wii U replacement is ready, but that would make the 3DS version ancient.

I hope you get what I meant, this hasn't been a good day for my English.

Absolutely nothing stops UE4 built games from running on a suitably powerful handheld. Its middle-ware, its not platform specific tools.

One thing worth keeping in mind is that Dragon Quest's gameplay is pretty simplistic. They just need to adequately display semi-open areas as shown in the video and let you wander around.

For how Unreal Engine 4 runs on current mobile hardware, here's a few somewhat similar scenes, mostly from 2014 devices:

Could it look quite a bit worse when scaled down? Definitely, but I don't think it wouldn't function.

Isn't the difference between the two versions mostly just the presentation? If NX has dual screens it would seem to make sense to use the same presentation as the 3DS version.
