As has been mentioned before, Canvas Curse is the worst selling in the franchise.
Given that Rainbow Curse is on Wii U, I wouldn't expect much.
I just looked up LTDs and holy shit. I had no idea that 2 Kirby games broke 1 million on the DS. That's nuts. Canvas curse was a mere 315,000, but that's still not bad.

First Day Sell-through

[PS3] Tales of Zestiria <RPG> (Bandai Namco Games) (¥8.715) - 70% doing well

[3DS] Legend of Legacy <RPG> (FuRyu) (¥6.458) - 70-80% doing better than expected

[WIU] Kirby and the Rainbow Curse <ACT> (Nintendo) (¥3.996) - 20% good luck on the weekend

[PSV] Tsurugi no Machi no Ihoujin: Kuro no Oukyuu <RPG> (Experience) (¥5.980) - 60% these kind of genre is popular on Vita
I don't remember very well what happened last year (and it is not easy to search now on crappy phone), but it looks like in late January, it is not unusual that games sell above expectataions. Like in 2013, when Demon Gaze and the best game in the world quickly sold out and had publishers rushing to restock them.

Tecmo Koei said it sold as expected in JP and surpassed expectations in the US. Folks gave comparison #s for other Warriors titles, and it seems like this one has outsold even the most popular PS2 ones easily.
I found those numbers, for those curious:

ito give you a random example of historical sales:

dynasty warriors 3 for ps2 sold 207k in its first 4 months
dynasty warriors 4 for ps2 sold 274k in its first 4 months
So it's definitely doing well for 3 months on the market, I'd think!

Kirby will have decent legs. I expect the weekend will be better for sales.
It will have decent legs, but its sales potential will be hampered by the tiny Wii U installed base. It's a platform, so it should do okay-ish. Kirby is popular enough in Japan, but I would have released closer to the Golden Week.

Come on ToZ......I really hope it does well since the impressions have been great and it seems to be a better game than Xillia.

Well, on the 31st Square Enix is showing off an unannounced game on a live stream so it's not implausible it shows in magazines two days earlier.

It's the NicoNico live stream where they have like six games and only one (Dragon Quest) is a mobile title, so it's not unbelievable it's a consumer game.
Oh ok. It's probably not something big, and a bit overhyped like the last time we got a similar announcement/teaser/"leak".

... and kudos to Legend of Legacy & Tales of Zesteria too. It's nice to see the former succeeding, but I'm especially pleased for the latter because I've been quite worried it's going to perform terribly.

I found those numbers, for those curious:

So it's definitely doing well for 3 months on the market, I'd think!
Even lifetime DW3/DW4 sold only a bit over 400k each in the US. And those are the best selling Musou games ever here.

Hyrule Warriors isn't just doing well, it's breaking records and will soon be the best selling Musou game ever in America. It's no wonder Koei Tecmo are thrilled with it, I'm curious how much Nintendo will allow them to iterate on the formula.

Oh ok. It's probably not something big, and a bit overhyped like the last time we got a similar announcement/teaser/"leak".
I would probably expect a handheld game at most, or maybe a mid-tier console title.

Don't expect something like Resident Evil 7.

This is Famitsu, not Game Informer, so what big means is rather different.

Could this send a good message? More Musou on Wii U maybe in the future that's not a Nintendo IP?

I think it'd be more likely that we'd see more Musou that is a Nintendo IP, given that seems to be the X factor here in making them actually sell well on Wii U.

Maybe the director can get his Mario Musou wish. :p

Probably not. It will likely lead to more Musou, but more Nintendo branded Musou is probably what that means.

Although dumping Xbox ports for Nintendo ports wouln't be the worst resource allocation Koei could make. Nintendo would need to push for it though, and that's where I have problems seeing it happen.

What about a higher probability of Nintendo picking up Ni-Oh? I know that's now under Team Ninja, but wasn't that more or less a Warriors-style game?

I doubt Ni-Oh really exists as an active product at this point. I also doubt it's something Nintendo would go after either since they already have Hyrule Warriors filling that genre hole for them. They went for Bayonetta 2, Devil's Third and the Fatal Frame series but they don't already have 1st party products in those specific subgenres.

Kaz said that the first GT on PS4 will be a numbered entry.....GT7. Unless development hasn't made as much progress as wanted, weird after he said this:

"Everything will be running naturally," Yamauchi said about Gran Turismo 7 for PS4. "PS3 was much, much more difficult. The high quality of data that we have being rendered on the PS4 I think is going to make an incredible difference."

Yamauchi went on to say that he and his staff at Polyphony Digital have a "clear vision" for Gran Turismo 7, which is "to do everything we couldn't do in GT6," he said. "We want to make it very Gran Turismo. By that I mean it's going to be a game that matches the very era that we live in, in 2015 or 2016."
I'm expecting 2016.

Aren't low initial sell throughs plus eventual great legs pretty typical for Kirby games? I don't think that number is really anything alarming.
Seems like it depends mainly on if it's caused by a large initial shipment. If it's 20% of a shipment below 50k that's pretty bad and puts a pretty strict cap on final sales as stores won't order more copies in large numbers. If it's closer to 100k then it's fine. But either way we really have no way of knowing. A lot of people thought the Wario minigame collection would have better leg as well.

Something like Toad isn't a good thing to compare it to either as that game was aided by the holiday season.

2015 is going to be a very bad year all around in Japan. Wii U, 3DS, Vita and PS3 numbers will only go down. The only console I expect to improve is the PS4 thanks to Final Fantasy XV.

Even on the software front, I don't expect huge numbers as Pokemon ORAS and Youkai Watch did last year.

Dat Xenoblade X art cover!
Breathtaking. I hope it'll live up to expectations as well. Quality-wise, if not sales-wise.

2015 is going to be a very bad year all around in Japan. Wii U, 3DS, Vita and PS3 numbers will only go down. The only console I expect to improve is the PS4 thanks to Final Fantasy XV.
I imagine PS4 will improve, but I very much doubt FFXV will be the reason this year.

There have way too much left ti implement in FFXV. If they are still unsure how big the map is gonna be and how to implement the magic system then i highly doubt they are gonna make it happen this year by just churning out assets all year long. They are too unsure about major details to not make a mess if they decided to release it this year.

Even on the software front, I don't expect huge numbers as Pokemon ORAS and Youkai Watch did last year.
While I definitely hope the PS4 does increase over last year (apart from PS4 launch #s), we'll see whether that happens in about a month. In the meantime, the 3DS is actually the only console kind of holding up YoY thanks to the new 3DS models.

The biggest PS4 titles in 2015 will likely be Dragon Quest Heroes and Metal Gear Solid V.
Any chance Bloodborne outsells either of them on PS4 since it's the only game exclusive to PS4? I figure the other 2 will have split sales among the consoles, and it'll be seen what the split is b/w PS3 & PS4.

Looking at how GZ performed on PS3/4:

4: 170k
3: 282k

MGSV should sell around 350k on PS4 if the ratio is the same.

Bloodborne is interesting since its a one of the first notable PS4 exclusives. Soul games do around 350k.

People are expect DQH to do 800k-1 million. PS4 SKU in the higher ends could be in the same range of 300-350k.

From the import thread:

Regarding the story, (spoiler tags just in case, nothing about the story itself)
every time you find a shard (a spell), your characters hear a song about a part of the story of the island and what happened to it. It works like a jigsaw puzzle this way as there's no order in which you find those. It's true there's almost zero cutscene or traditional plot sequences but there's a "story", it's just that it's not focused on the characters but the island itself. Though all characters have motivations of their own that may link to some developments later down the road.
Reviews on amazon seem to complain about marketing. I guess if you were expecting a more traditional jrpg experience you'd be disappointed.
Based on what I've been hearing so far, that seems like a lack of perspective on their part. Probably not used to older RPGs, particularly not the earlier SaGa games. But I don't have the game yet, and I won't until Tuesday, so we'll see what I think when it gets here.

Coming for that 85% drop. #PrayForFuryu

It probably won't be used anywhere, it's just the artwork from the official website.

100m cards shipped for the Youkai Watch TCG... not bad ;)

So for Media Create, meh sales of Bancho 6 seems due to aging players and platform switch.

Sales of “Kenka Bancho 6: Soul & Blood” halved from previous installment, with hardware shift being unsuccessful

・ Total software sales were 399 thousand copies, which were 78.28% of last week.
Although new titles were released for the first time in 3 weeks, a ratio of new software sales to total software sales was just 7.30%.

・ Newly released in this week, “Kenka Bancho 6: Soul & Blood” sold 24 thousand copies (initial digestibility rate: 45.07%).
While its past installments had been released in PS format, latest installment was released in the 3DS.
Nevertheless, its initial sales halved from the first week sales of its previous sequel, “Kenka Bancho 5: Otoko no Rule” released in January 2011 (initial week sales : 59 thousand copies, initial digestibility rate : 60.75%), with its initial digestibility rate decreasing.
The reason for that decrease was that, as the franchise continues for a long time, its purchasers have attained a age, which affected the decrease in sales volume (“Kenka Bancho 4: 1nen Sensou” had sold 72 thousand copies in the first week, while “Kenka Bancho 5: Otoko no Rule” had sold 59 thousand copies).
Furthermore, a lot of fans of the franchise seem to refrain from purchasing due to the change of hardware.

・ Total hardware sales were 93 thousand consoles, which were 78.72% of last week.
As the end and the beginning of the year selling season had finished, sales of every hardware decreased from last week. Particularly, the 3DS systems (the 3DS, the 3DS LL, the New3DS, the New3DS LL), which had been a staple for a gift demand, showed a severe downturn, with its sales sliding to 76.69% of last week.
Meanwhile, PS format slightly decreased from last week, with its demand being comparatively stable. As a result, the market share of PS format has expanded for 4 consecutive weeks.

It's not like the store just took the artwork from the website and printed it, though, since the artwork seen in the cases is only similar to the one on the website, but not the same (the clouds are different, the characters are in different spots etc). So, it's definitely possible that this is the art Nintendo has currently in mind for the cover.

If the PS3 to PS4 ratio is still the same for Japanese software by the time MGSV is released, then the PS4 will be in horrible shape. It's possible, but it'll also be a clear sign that many Japanese gamers are not interested in upgrading consoles anymore.
