Media Create Sales: Week 3, 2015 (Jan 12 - Jan 18)

I think you're misunderstanding what i said. I didnt argue about which platform that is the best choice, i only said that i find it "funny/interesting" that its up for question.

Have you never seen the arguement that a platform is better than another because of the big different size in userbase? Like i mentioned, what i said was just generally speaking, and not necesarily related to anything specfic in this thread.

Well yes but it's generally when install base is brought up it's talking about big releases, which none of the Vita/3DS multiplats are. For instance it's somewhat clear that Vita's install base is capping game sales at under 500K sales so if you're aiming to sell more than 500K you probably should be targeting the bigger install base.

That is true, i know, that is why i mentioned "more importantly is who that owns the systems instead" =) I dont find it that surprising, but some comments seems to indicate that its kinda a given that a game would sell more on a certain system because of a bigger install base, instead of recognizing that other smaller platforms might be a better choice for different reasons, at least that is how i understand it. Otherwise i wouldnt have mentioned the "funny/interesting" thing. I was just generally speaking when i mentioned that, just to have pointed that out.

Thanks for the list. Do we have the final sales numbers for those games?

Actually, the debate was brought up by someone who said that Attack on Titan should have been released on PSV because it's there where "anime games sell"... which is absolutely non-sense.

No comment led me to think that the general consensus, or even the consensus of a minority of users, was that the higher the installed base the higher the sales (besides the sarcastic comment of monpiece which was, indeed, a joke). We always said that PSV is strong in some games, but that 3DS games also tend to sell better in the long-run because of a large installed base.

Another issue related to the userbase is that the larger the userbase the more likely is to sell more... which is obvious. This doesn't necessarily happen all the time (see Exstetra). But selling 100k+ on PSV is quite difficult, and legs are most of the times terrible. On 3DS, you have games debuting at 30k units crawling into the 100k territory all the time.

Anyway, there are some multi for PSV / 3DS. Virtue's Last Reward eventually sold slightly better on 3DS, and this was true for Time Travelers, and likely true for Samurai Warriors Chronicles. Exstetra sold more on PSV, but it sold abysmally on both platforms.

All these titles sold terribly across both platforms.

I like this cover.

The last PS3 / Vita game by Furyu was a huge bomb like ~10k on combined platforms for first week. Hopefully, they will do much much better this time.

http://geimin.net/ is not working.

Does anybody know how long it has been down? It would be a shame if they close that site.

By the way, was the Famitsu 2013 top 1000 ever posted or leaked anywhere?

When was the last time you checked?

Archive.org got a snapshot from Dec. 14, but nothing after that (which means their bot didn't check the website since then, so no idea when it was "emptied").

All these titles sold terribly across both platforms.

Virtue's Last Reward sold 18k on 3DS and 15.5k on PSV, for a total of 33.5k units. 999 on DS sold 40k units... Not that far.

Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3 sold 29k on PSV and 24k on 3DS (last known numbers, but the latter stayed in the rankings more and higher later on) for a total of 53k units. Not that far from what the second one sold in the first few weeks.

It was more like ~5K first week, <10K LTD IIRC. Lost Dimension was a mega bomb.

Approximately how much does a publisher/dev get from a game sold at full retail, anyway?

Platform holder gets ~30%, production & retail cost around ~20%, sometimes the dev gets a percentage depending on their contract, so it's 50% at most, less if the publisher is using an external developer.

It's been a long time since I read about this so I could be wrong.

I don't think 999 should be a bar for good sales :p

Ehh I think that's overblown as a factor honestly. It might be a factor now four years into the life of the 3DS and 3 three years into Vita's but it wasn't a factor when most of those decisions were made. I'd also point out that the two big Vita Anime games this year(Sword Art Online and Digimon) are both from developers with 3DS experience and the last Digimon game was actually on 3DS.

It definitely is a factor in general, but I feel it's quite small in the scheme of things.

At the end of the day it is a factor that can't simply be ignored though. Games are made by people not machines, and most development teams can't just switch on a dime from one technology to another. Doesn't really matter how big the company. A Vita development team just can't switch on a dime to be a 3DS development team and vice versa.

It could well have been a factor when the decisions were made, as I'd assume the development environment for the 3DS has an upgrade path from the DS, just as the development environment for the Vita will have some heritage in the PSP. That would have been the time to decide on a change though, back when they pick which platforms to design their toolsets around. And developers would have had some input into that, which is where you might see some of the seemingly odd platform allegiances coming from.

Yeah, that might be. I feel that i've seen it being used for smaller titles as well, but i dont have any specific examples to come with though, so i cant really say for sure.

I see. I didnt see the whole discussion to be honest, i mostly wanted to make a comment about the 3DS/Vita multiplatform. I could have made it more clear that my comment was mostly just generally speaking and not necessarily aimed any any specific posts in this thread, sorry about that.

Yeah, its possible. I just feel that i've seen comments about userbase being bigger as an argument for why a 3DS version would sell better, but since i cant show to any examples, i cant say 100% for sure. But statisically it makes perfectly sense because of the huge difference in the number of owners, but also because both systems have a diversity in content, which should techically mean that there are a lot of different types of owners (i.e its not only kids or adults that owns it, and not only fans of a certain genre that owns it). Based on those statistics, it can look like its a given. That its also one reason why i think its "funny/interesting" why its sometimes a question that what would sell the most =) But it could also be different reasons too of course, like a bigger present of certain fans on one system like we both mentioned. Or technical reasons like cw_sasuke mentioned, that one version of a game might be more attractive because of better performance and/or looks/graphics.

Square Enix's lower profile January mobile releases have come out.

Mugen Knights:

Bravely Default: D's Archive is also out, but it's only been out for a day, so the charts aren't generated yet.

Currently it's starting to climb, up 32 places since it's launch to 83. We won't get a good feel for its launch for probably a week or so though given how mobile distribution works. In the above chart for example I cut out the part where Mugen was down at like 700 or something since that's a reflection of only the very first people who download it buying something.

Overall I wouldn't hold my breath with these two though.

Their next major launch (or at least higher profile title that they advertised in advance for more than a week) will be Final Fantasy Legends.

Strange that it just released on iOS. On Android, it says it released on January 13th, but first datas are from January 16th.

Here's a very little look at how it's doing, downloads-wise

January 16th - 1,000 to 5,000
January 17th - 10,000 to 50,000
January 18th - 10,000 to 50,000
January 19th - 50,000 to 100,000
...
January 21st - 50,000 to 100,000

I'd like to make a bigger feature post about it in the next future, when it reaches (or shortly after) 100,000 downloads, so we have a better idea about what specific download rankings mean in the Free Apps category.

I kind of get the impression that this wasn't treated with the same importance as Praying Brage. It might be giving Asano too much benefit of the doubt but between this and the half-hearted micro transactions in For the Sequel I would saying that Asano isn't as enthused about those types of products as others within Square Enix and is making token gestures.

Hyrule is still selling? Interesting... or was there a price cut at stores or something?

A lot of apps are silently released at first to test for any last minute issues before they begin advertising.

Famitsu head editor in chief teasing in a live broadcast on nico that an absolutely massive scoop is coming on the January 29 issue of Famitsu.

Dengeki Playstation also teasing in its next issue preview releasing on January 29 that the ban has lifted on first bits of information on a huge title and that they will have a scoop on it.

Hype time!

It's happening I guess. Is there any big Sony-centric event soon?

Well, on the 31st Square Enix is showing off an unannounced game on a live stream so it's not implausible it shows in magazines two days earlier.

It's the NicoNico live stream where they have like six games and only one (Dragon Quest) is a mobile title, so it's not unbelievable it's a consumer game.

That would put US + Japan sales at just below 500,000. Pretty good, and it seems like it's still selling decently. I think everyone involved has to be very pleased with this performance.

I vaguely remember somebody from tecmo koei saying it had surpassed expectations right after release, but I may be imagining things.

Well, given that if Bravely ever fails he's likely to end up working on mobile for the rest of eternity, especially given what Silicon primarily does plus Square's long term relationship with them, he might as well focus on handhelds now.

Tecmo Koei said it sold as expected in JP and surpassed expectations in the US. Folks gave comparison #s for other Warriors titles, and it seems like this one has outsold even the most popular PS2 ones easily.

Good for Legend of Legacy. If it had a decent amount of shipped units that really translate well into larger than expected sales numbers.

And I expect Kirby to be a slow burner, but yeah kind of disappointed it didn't sell at least 50% on its first day.

As has been mentioned before, Canvas Curse is the worst selling in the franchise.
Given that Rainbow Curse is on Wii U, I wouldn't expect much.
