Media Create Sales: Week 30, 2012 (Jul 23 - Jul 29)

3rd party support was generally terrible. It took until mid 2009 for there to be anything really substantial (MH Tri, SW3, Tales of Graces) and that was 2 years too late.
This is really key. It's not that Wii didn't get anything at all, it's that the 3rd party response was much too late to really do anything, and came after they'd put huge effort into building up those audiences elsewhere (Tales, Musou, FF).

Hopefully the big Japanese 3rd parties learned their lesson and give Wii U a fuller effort upfront when market building is so vital. At the least they should really be delivering 360-like multiplatform support for core games and genres (FF, RE, Musou, Metal Gear, etc), while continuing with the sorts of casual hits they managed on Wii (Taiko, Go Vacation, Deca Sports, etc).

We were talking about Wii, and you wrote "All things being considered, I reckon Wii has had a good support in Japan overall.". I completely disagree with that.

Yeah, it had the mainline Monster Hunter and a mainline Dragon Quest but while the former became an handheld deal, the latter came as a MMORPG, and we have seen how it will end up to sell (good, but not as good as IX or VIII).

Other than those two franchises, Wii got a lot of shitty support from third party developers, or stuffs no one really cared (niche titles, obscure IPs, bad strategies such as releasing Graces the week before FFXIII and the like).

In fact I was referring specifically to Japanese market, as I gather Wii Japanese line-up was way better than Western one.

Aside from that, speaking more in general, I reckon Wii in its lifetime has had some good third-party exclusives(Tri, Little king's story, Mad world, Muramasa, No more heroes 1/2, etc., although some of them later on were ported to PS360 twins), but was tremendously lacking of all those multi-platforms big-budget titles that couldn't run on Wii, such as Dead rising, Arkham asylum/city, Red dead, Portal2, Skyrim, GTA4, Dead space, Bayonetta, Devil may cry, etc.

As far as I'm concerned I've had a lot of fun on Wii also thanks to third-parties' exclusives, as much as I've been missing aforementioned HD good stuff, but I hope this issue is going to be readdressed with WiiU.

The problem is when speaking in a sales thread the Wii's 3rd party exclusives were titles that generally sold less that 100k in Japan. Not to mention how badly Tales of Graces underperformed which probably sent most Japanese publisher still considering the Wii as a platform running.

I've had a lot of fun as well with them, but they were hardly important titles, market-wise. Capcom brings Resident Evil? Yeah, on-rail shooters and portings. Capcom brings a fighting game? Yeah, something that could not be marketed in any way. Konami brings Castlevania? Judgement, lol. Konami brings Winning Eleven? Yeah, 4-5 months laters all the other versions. Square brings Dragon Quest? Before X, which is a MMORPG btw, there were a shitty first-person 1-hour RPG, and a card game. Square brings Final Fantasy? Yeah, a porting from DS (from DS!) and The Crystal Bearers, managed like the company itself did not care so much (released just a month before Final Fantasy XIII). Namco brings Soul Calibur? Yeah, Legends... Was it a game or something else?

You see, third parties never tried to make something marketable on Wii.

I see what you mean and of course I cannot disagree, honestly I was expecting Wii to have a much better support from Capcom, Namco, Konami, etc. - clearly something has gone wrong and we've already discussed these issues previously at length -, yet I have appreciated the efforts of Marvelous, that has brought to Wii some surprisingly good stuff.

Don't you think that a Dragon Quest VII remake would have more impact than the previous remakes for NDS? It was the best selling title until Dragon Quest IX, I think it is highly praised among Dragon Quest fans and it has never been remade.

I would say it would have about amount of same impact as the previous DQ remakes on the DS.

AKB48+Me is also set for Q4 2012. I wonder when it will come out and if the sales will be affected (goes for both games) because of the PSP/Vita game.

I haven't looked into the two games, but do they have similar game play to each other? If so, it most likely come down to which one get praised by people like Famitsu and such more.

I don't think AKB48+ME is going to be as successful as the PSP/V version. For once, it's far more established, and the presentation is way too different.

A situation akin to the Miku series on both portables, imo.

IMO if it's a real overhaul (and NOT using that old DQVII engine), then probably closer to DQV PS2 than the DS remakes (thought there wasn't that much separating those either).

Cool. I was the closest prediction on TT PSV/3DS :D TT PSP is just unfair lmao.

And a lot of people overestimated NSMB2, actually not realizing it was only two days was part of the equation.

Yep, I didn't realize that at all =( I guess I did pretty well for my first MC prediction though. Validates the long ass time lurking.

It has an awesome boxart though

If its any consolation, I love Cave Story 3D. I got it for XMas and its fantastic. Really dig the remixed music and art style.

I hoped it would fare better in Japan, seeing it just seems like a game that hits all the right notes....exploration, pacing, sound..Besides, they got better box art :)

Can't wait to replay it on the XL.

If you consider that many 3DS are just uprgrading to the XL and there is much competition, especially with NSMB 2 being released, its not all that bad. Sales will rise higher once the holidays begin.

Does JP have a holiday sales period boom? Or is this just westerners associating our holidays with other countries?

Yeah - the 3DS sold 1.6M last December in Japan.

Although it's worth pointing out that the Japanese holiday boost is typically shifted back a bit from the western timeframe. In Japan, the boom usually starts a little later than Black Friday, but it runs later as well (a little past New Year's).

Net sales and operating loss in the Digital Entertainment segment totaled ¥11,336 million (a decrease of 3.9% from the same period of the prior fiscal year) and ¥111 million (operating income of ¥2,834 million in the same period of the prior fiscal year), respectively.

Qualitative information on consolidated business forecasts
The advancement of networking and digitalization, and the diffusion of smartphones have triggered a fundamental change in the business environment surrounding the Group, where content delivery measures to customers and
business models are increasingly diversified. The Group views this change as an opportunity to capture new profit sources, and is making every effort to establish its profit base through expansion of content and services that conform to emerging customer needs, and launch of full-scale commercial services for major MMO titles.

so their forecast for this FY is all based on generating revenue from MMOs and other services?!

BDFF will sell 500k, even if I have to individually threaten 450k Japanese people into buying it against their will.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Bravely Default perform well with all the promotion (via game demos) they've been doing, trying to build a community around the game. Things like using one demo to get feedback and then implementing it in the next demo would go some way to getting a group of people invested.

Edit: To quantify "perform well", Four Warriors of Light has a 200k LTD so I wouldn't be surprised to see Bravely Default do 300k.

That sort of marketing only gets you the sort of "popularity" that ~100k games get. It's way too limited and niche to have any sort of mainstream impact. Most people don't even know the game exists.

If BD gets anywhere near FWOL then it'll be doing very well. I don't see it.

Maybe distancing itself from the tarnished Final Fantasy name will give it new legs!

No chance in hell.

Bravely Default won't be a blockbuster, but I can see it reaching 250-300k units; 3DS is healthy, Square is pushing it quite nicely, and word of mouth can really help.

So what?
There are a wide array of reasons why KH3D underperformed. On the contrary, Fire Emblem sold 450k, Rune Factory and Etrian Odyssey are having one of the best results of their respective series, and LBX: Baku Boost, Culdcept, Dragon Quest Monsters are all performing well. That is, 3DS is an healthy system, and a viable platform for jRPG.
