What do you consider the "predecessor" to Tokyo New World Record? Demon Gaze (the last original Vita game by Experience Inc.), Stranger of Sword City (the last game by Experience Inc.) or Labyrinth Cross Blood Infinity (the prequel to TNWR)?

It sold less than Demon Gaze, but sold more than both Stranger of Sword City & Labyrinth Cross Blood, iirc (the Labyrinth Cross Blood game on Vita was a remake, but I think the Xbox 360 original sold less than Tokyo New World Record too)

There are likely several reasons that Operation Abyss didn't outsell Demon Gaze but outsold Sword City and Cross Blood Infinity.

Cross Blood Infinity is a port of the Xbox 360 game (which was a port of a PC game, I believe). Operation Abyss is a remake of (I think) two games in the Xth series, which predates Cross Blood. The core systems are still very similar to the original release, and so it's a more complicated and less beginner-friendly game. It seems like they are trying to reach a new audience with the new art style and some new features from Demon Gaze, like the dungeon memo system.

As for Stranger of Sword City, it released on Xbox 360 only, but has both PC and Vita versions coming out later this year. A lot of people are probably waiting for either of those versions.

Wow so that 35k digital number for Freedom Wars was first week only and not LTD, thats very impressive. So with digital sales it easily passed the 300k mark. Really wish we got God Eater 2 digital sales so we could do a fair comparison.

Yo-Kay watch 2 sales are quite impressive. Wii U sales were also impressive, everyone was expecting to sell less than last week, and
surprisingly sold more, even with no new games released this week. Also goods sales for Mario Kart 8.

I think surprising would better describe wii u's sales, not impressive.

Would you know the LTD of the bolded hiska-kun :)

According to japanltdrank (which basically summarizes famitsu info) it's this:
3DS Pokemon Battle TROZEI [Nintendo eShop] {DL} ? 183,070 2014-03-12

The original game on DS for comparison
NDS Pokémon Trozei! 46,910 293,807 Pokémon Co. 2005-10-20

For a download only title I'd say it's doing fairly well imo.

With those downloads for Freedom Wars, I'd say it's done very well for a Vita title so far:

2 - PSV Freedom Wars 187,890 300,756 SCE 2014-06-26
I think it's the second title to pass 300K on Vita.

Notable (?) Releases for the rest of the year for these consoles (every release counts for Wii U & PS4 though)

Vita: (there are lots of titles listed, but I have no idea about how notable any of them are except these 2...)
8/28 - Toukiden Kiawmi
11/27 - Phantasy Star Nova

3DS:
8/7 - Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission 2
8/7 - Senran Kagura 2: Shinku
9/4 - DQX: Online
9/13 - Smash Bros
10/11 - Monster Hunter 4G
10/23 - Tales of the World: Reve Unitia
11/21 - Pokemon Alpha Sapphire/Omega Ruby

Wii U:
8/7 - DQX All in One Package
8/14 - Zelda Musou
9/4 - Zumba Fitness (lol)
9/20 - Bayonetta 2
9/27 - Zero: Nuregarasu no Miko (Fatal Frame)
11/6 - The LEGO Movie Videogame
Smash & Captain Toad at some point here?

PS4:
8/7 - Sniper Elite 3
8/21 - Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition
8/21 - Last of Us Remastered
8/28 - Transformers
9/4 - Plants v. Zombies - Garden Warfare
9/4 - Sengoku Musou 4
9/4 - Amazing Spiderman 2
9/11 - Destiny
9/25 - Shin Sangoku Musou 7 Empires
10/2 - Metro Redux
10/9 - DriveClub
10/23 - Psycho Break
10/30 - Onechabara Z2: Chaos
11/6 - Lego Movie
11/3 - CoD Advanced Warfare: Subtitled Edition
11/20 - AC: Unity
11/20 - Dragon Age Inquisition

Wii U is now 1.2 million ahead of PS4 and that gap will have grown significantly after the holiday season - in which I expect good sales for Wii U with Mario Kart and Smash Bros available. At this rate, and there's no games to really stop the trend, PS4 will not be close to a million sold in Japan by the end of the year.

I would guess that we'll start seeing second and third tier Japanese console games, althougn there are not that many anymore, being released on both PS4 and Wii U or maybe even just on Wii U. Niche games like Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta and Fatal Frame will help there.

For sure PS4 will see a couple of massive bumps because of MGS, FF and RE, but it may well be 2016 before we see any of these. All three might be end 2016 or even 2017. By then I already expect the new Nintendo system to be close to releasing.

I talked about the ps4 not reaching 1 million by the end of the year awhile ago. I said the PS4 will sell around 750K but not that much higher than that by the end of the year.

It will "bounce back" almost certainly, but perhaps not as thoroughly as some would like. I mean, the PSVita has "bounced back," but that bounce is basically "bouncing back" to the PSP's bad period. In these cases "bounce back" basically just means something like "selling 50%+ better than it is now." As an example: let's say a bunch of games release on PS4 and the system doubles its average current weekly sales, and sustains that increase. I mean, yes, that's a "bounce back" in the sense that the system increased its sales by 100% YoY, but selling 10-11k per week isn't a "bounce back" in any meaningful sense.

I think the ps4 may bounce back and sell as well as the PSVita at times and maybe even significantly more that the PSVita at times to, but it will never make a full recovery. I wouldn't be surprised if no console breaks the 5 million mark this gen in Japan.

16. [PS3] Minecraft: Play Station 3 Edition <ADV> (Mojang) {2014.06.24} (¥2.057) - 0 (28.589) / 28.589

I'm really surprised by this. I wonder why Sony is not releasing a physical copy of Minecraft. Japan really wants it. Why Nintendo is not getting a port for the Wii U? Iwata, do it!

Only one KH game ever sold a million in Japan and it was almost a decade ago. By the time GTA6 is ready who knows what state PS4 will be in either.

And many big PS2 franchises declined on PS3. FF, WE, SH, Musou, SRT, Star Ocean, GT, HSG, Tekken, VF, Ace Combat, and so on. Really even Tales did too, Xillia 1 was an outlier. PS4 is already tracking behind PS3, less Japanese support and western games aren't going to buck the trend here.

franchises that sold more on PS2 than PS3 >>> franchises that sold more on PS3 than PS2,.especially for big sellers. There will be further decline on PS4, it's pretty obvious now.

Oh. for sure most franchises declined from PS2 to PS3 as the hw difference between the two was so big and maybe it's just my selective mind in work that I remember those that didn't (or only slightly) lol. I just remember that before MGSIV launch most people were laughing at people that predicted that it could sell similarly to old MGS titles. Also it seems that Japanese games with western production standards and western appeal (MGS and RE) made the transition a lot better from PS2 to PS3 compared to others even in Japan. My original point was though that PS4 will get bigger games and franchises than Vita will ever get and that point still stands even if we see decline from these franchises.

According to japanltdrank (which basically summarizes famitsu info) it's this:
3DS Pokemon Battle TROZEI [Nintendo eShop] {DL} ? 183,070 2014-03-12

The original game on DS for comparison
NDS Pokémon Trozei! 46,910 293,807 Pokémon Co. 2005-10-20

For a download only title I'd say it's doing fairly well imo.

With those downloads for Freedom Wars, I'd say it's done very well for a Vita title so far:

2 - PSV Freedom Wars 187,890 300,756 SCE 2014-06-26
I think it's the second title to pass 300K on Vita.

Notable (?) Releases for the rest of the year for these consoles (every release counts for Wii U & PS4 though)

Vita: (there are lots of titles listed, but I have no idea about how notable any of them are except these 2...)
8/28 - Toukiden Kiawmi
11/27 - Phantasy Star Nova

3DS:
8/7 - Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission 2
8/7 - Senran Kagura 2: Shinku
9/4 - DQX: Online
9/13 - Smash Bros
10/11 - Monster Hunter 4G
10/23 - Tales of the World: Reve Unitia
11/21 - Pokemon Alpha Sapphire/Omega Ruby

Wii U:
8/7 - DQX All in One Package
8/14 - Zelda Musou
9/4 - Zumba Fitness (lol)
9/20 - Bayonetta 2
9/27 - Zero: Nuregarasu no Miko (Fatal Frame)
11/6 - The LEGO Movie Videogame
Smash & Captain Toad at some point here?

PS4:
8/7 - Sniper Elite 3
8/21 - Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition
8/21 - Last of Us Remastered
8/28 - Transformers
9/4 - Plants v. Zombies - Garden Warfare
9/4 - Sengoku Musou 4

11/6 - Lego Movie
11/3 - CoD Advanced Warfare: Subtitled Edition

I really wonder how The Last of Us and Destiny are going to perform on PS4.

Dat PS4 lineup. The West are pretty much singlehandedly making fall lineup. Japan why are you always so late to the party -____-

TLoU sold 236k on PS3. Maybe 70-100k for Re.
Destiny is a bit weirder. Its being pushed by SCEJ in Japan and shooters are popular in Japan like COD and BF. I do wonder how JP's reception will be of the game.

I'm, more curious to see how GTAV on PS4 does and Psycho Break.

Gta5 should do pretty well on ps4, ps3 version sold something like 700k and is one of the best selling ps3 games in Japan, right?

The elephant in the room for western games that do well in Japan is the question of whether or not they're bonafide "system sellers."

I mean, if MH5 is a Vita exclusive, it's unquestionable that Vita sales will increase by at least a million in Japan by the power of that franchise.

But stuff like TLOU, that did reasonably well... Will it even do a third as good on PS4 due to the install base difference? Are there a significant core that will buy hardware for that franchise? Same with even bigger sellers like Call of Duty.

Nice to see the Wii U bump. Hopefully it got a bump in the west too.

Poor Yoshi sales.
My waifu is responsible for 2 of them though ( ≖‿≖)
YmGOfEb.jpg

Why would they do that?
The Xbox may perform bad in Japan, but the 360 still did over 1.5 million units there. While that is certainly poor per capita sales, it's probably still more than they get in countries like Norway yet they still release there.

Stop lying nigguh, That ain't your wife... -_-

No the WiiU's future is looking much darker. What major titles does it have for it in the future......Smash, Zelda ,possibly Animal crossing and not to mention the release of its biggest system seller MK hasn't done much to improve sales.

Meanwhile the PS4 is guaranteed to get MGSV, FFXV, KH3, Yakuza, Tales, GTA, GT, Hot Shots, RE7, alongside support from more niche parties like GUST, Falcom, and NIS.

what about hyrule warrior, bayonetta, X, ..

Youkai Watch 2 is still very strong and it is helping 3DS hardware, if only there was a title of this caliber every month...

PS4 is about to hit utter bomb status (below 5.000).

Wii Sports Club is out of the top 30 with lots of units sitting on shelves.

But there is...

Nice numbers for YW2! Impressive that it's holding g so well! Ok numbers for 3DS and Vita

Biggest question is, will Japanese devs choose PS4 over Wii U to make games on despite Wii U having a "much" larger install base?

I suspect in part that'll be dictated by whether they have any plans for their games in the West and the scale of the games in question. Big blockbusters with a full expectation of Western sales would probably go for PS4. Smaller niche games that would *like* to make it in the West, might possibly be better to go with Nintendo since they seem to be more receptive to helping small companies bring games over at the moment. And games with no Western plans... could be either, I guess, but Nintendo seem the smarter choice.

I'm, more curious to see how GTAV on PS4 does and Psycho Break.

At this point it almost feels like PS4 is the 360 of this gen but it's selling better because of PS brand (and possible Japan being more accepting of Western games now).

I keep seeing this "publishers will start making games for Wii U on top of PS4 because PS4 is selling badly". Firstly, they need to start making games. That's one big hurdle to over come. Secondly, I think they'll do one or another. If people think Capcom, Konami or SE will bother making a game for Wii U just because of Japan, I'm afraid you'll be disappointed. It's also probably harder and costier to make both Wii U and PS4 version of the game. You either work around Wii U limitations and scale up to PS4 (Yakuza Ishin) or you work around PS4 limitations and then downscale until it can run on WiiU (Tokiden). Neither is ideal really. Third party games don't exactly sell gangbusters on Wii U. I realise that's also because nothing notable is being released on Wii U, apart from the Monster Hunter 3.

I think for better or worse the publishers that were publishing on PS3 will stick to PS4 irregardless of it's current performance. They had their chance to make games for Wii U and I think that ship has sailed a long time ago.

Yeah thats just not going to happen, bar some big money hat from Nintendo. SE, Capcom and Konami have pretty much ignored WiiU. All their big titles are coming to PS4 and none have been announced for WiiU. I pretty much expect most PS3 support to carry onto PS4 but with each publisher having a smaller output.

Or you know they could skip PS4 entirely and just start making mobile games.

It's actually the more likely scenario rather than "The games will come". Japan's 3rd parties haven't invested anything into the PS4 yet unlike where they went all in with the PS3 before the launch.

I expect most of the core titles to carry on and the rest resources to be concentrated in the mobileland.

While that's also an option, I doubt they'll stop making the core titles. Transitioning from a games publisher to mobile publisher is not as easy as it sounds, nobody's going to suddenly drop everything and start making mobiles games. If anything it'll be exactly as it's transpiring right now. Less and less console games are being made, more and more resources are being used for the mobile sector. It'll be a gradual change, some may even abandon home console sector completely in time but that's a harder thing to predict.

Capcom hasn't been bad really. MH3U, RER and MHFG all came to Wii U as well as eShop fare like Ducktales, D&D and a ton of Virtual Console. PS4 isn't exactly blowing that away quite yet with just Strider and an eternally delayed f2p randomized dungeon crawler.

No the WiiU's future is looking much darker. What major titles does it have for it in the future......Smash, Zelda ,possibly Animal crossing and not to mention the release of its biggest system seller MK hasn't done much to improve sales.
Smash is really Nintendo biggest system seller tbh.

Is it? Has Smash ever sold more than the MK of the same generation? There is also the fact Smash will be released for 3DS first.
It did once.

Mario Kart 64: 1,711,611
Super Smash Bros.: 1,632,055

Super Smash Bros. Melee: 1,349,418
Mario Kart Double Dash!!: 825,894

Mario Kart Wii: 3,701,492
Super Smash Bros. Brawl: 2,303,103+ (still regularly charting)

Well I'm not saying Smash sells more, just that it will move more consoles, 80k-100k that week.

Edit: And no, not because of the holidays, the game will get delayed to March 2015 or w'e.

I'm surprised at N64 numbers. Never thought it was that close in Japan.

Smash on Wii U will certainly move more consoles than MK8 in Japan because of the following factors:
- Holiday season (assuming no delays).
- More exposure, in fact Smash 3DS/Wii U had the most events, trailers, mentions plus the daily POTDs since the initial reveal (how many times did MK8 get events in Japan before release).
- No big competition on the software front.

As to how the 3DS version will affect the Wii U version? We still have to see that. It's no guarantee that it will bring down potential Wii U sales. In fact, it can also be argued that it may help the Wii U to sell to new audiences (3DS owners who have yet to buy a Wii U), so it will basically depend on the impressions it will give to the early (3DS version) adopters.

So, can we say WiiU is now stabilized in between 8 and 10k?
Really disappointing numbers for Yoshi, but this game always felt like an half-hearted attempt, unlike Wooly World...

Or you know they could skip PS4 entirely and just start making mobile games.

It's actually the more likely scenario rather than "The games will come". Japan's 3rd parties haven't invested anything into the PS4 yet unlike where they went all in with the PS3 before the launch.

"I just don't see mobile as a competitor to console gaming. It's a completely different experience! They compliment each other, even!"

We outside of Japan are going to be doing a MUCH larger percentage of the heavy lifting of console J-game success from here on out. You know, when it appears.

So 60% sell-through? It doesn't seem to be a huge bomb then, at least. Even though it of course deserved more.
