Media Create Sales: Week 31, 2012 (Jul 30 - Aug 05)

Ha ha - love the DS9 references. :)

Something I've noticed is that no one releases big games on the week of Obon or Golden week. Why is that? Wouldn't releasing it during those week rather than before those weeks produce more sales potential?

Same reason no one releases anything during the week of Christmas in the west. By releasing shortly before the holiday, you get the full launch sales during launch week, plus then you get (hopefully) a nice sustained boost of holiday sales on top of that during the holiday week.

By releasing during holiday week itself you run the risk of mixing launch sales with holiday boost sales and losing a bit of both in the process - either from retailers ordering too few copies, and the holiday is over before you can replenish supply - or just from having less time to have the game seep into the consumer's mindset. Holiday sales tend to skew towards the more casual consumer - so by having the game out a week or two in advance, there's a greater chance that they've become aware of the game (through advertising or word-of-mouth) by the time the holiday arrives.

So I'm in Japan right now, and I thought I'd share a little anecdote about the 3DS and Vita. It is an anecdote and isn't absolute gospel truth for everywhere in Japan, but I do find it interesting.

So I've seen 3DS adverts in a lot of places; they're plastered all over the Yamanote Line (the most active commuter train line in Japan) and I've seen a fair number of 3DSes in the wild. Still not as many as DSes (natch), but enough to notice. 3DS adverts are on TV, they're on the street, they're in store windows. The 3DS is everywhere at this point.

The one and only time I have seen the Vita advertised in a place that is not an actual storefront was at the train station which services the Tokyo Big Sight convention center, where Comiket is held. There the adverts were advertising its ability to stream anime, even more than any game focus. It was being peddled as something of an Otaku Dream Device.

The Vita isn't exactly going to gain traction if that's all the advertising SCEJ is doing for it. Because damn if it isn't invisible otherwise - even a lot of storefronts aren't bothering to advertise the fact that they have it up front.

(Amusingly, PSP software is still pretty prevalent in advertisement. Bushiroad has gone so far as to plaster up adverts for their second "Milky Holmes" VN on the Yamanote - which I found a little
emot-psyduck.gif
-inducing TBH - there's a decent amount of advertising in various places around Japan and on TV, and Akihabara is still covered in presentation kiosks for PSP games. Nayuta no Kiseki, in particular, is everywhere (edit: in Akiba) right now, and I even found a shelf still dedicated to Ao no Kiseki in one store. Good times for Falcom, at least. Gonna be interested to see what kind of drop Nayuta takes in week 3, since it isn't performing quite to standard for its franchise so far.)

SpaceDrake's Village Report. Thanks for sharing.
I'm not surprised about the lack of Vita ads considering how there kinda is nothing to advertise.

Sony is clearly hiding the vita on purpose so it can launch his new portable console during the holiday, the P2P, the playstation two portable, it's exactly like the vita, but no one knows about the vita, so a new portable console from SONY!
Clearly

You wan an analysis? Ok! :D

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=40785579&postcount=442

Given the datas for the last 4 years, we have that in the pre-Obon week there's usually a small drop compared to the earlier week ( Wii had a 50% drop due to MH3's second week), then the Obon week shows increases for everyone, but much more for Nintendo platforms. Then, the post-Obon week is a return to other weeks' numbers, in some cases even lower than on pre-Obon week.

So, next week we should see a little drop for every platform.

I expect a little drop for the hardware next week as well, because sales were too high to boost again. But software should rise a little. At least games as Taiko no Tatsujin or Kirby.

Nice. Good to have an idea of what to look forward to. Will be interesting if 3DS get a rise (and how much, if so) with the new version just having launched.

Glad someone got it. It's what came to mind with AniHawk's comment. :)

That was Media Create. MC also tracked more DQVII sales than were shipped, at the time, and tracked more Super Smash Bros. Melee sales than were shipped (I believe). In the software's case, they eventually went back and adjusted down, though. Famitsu has done the same from time to time.
Thanks. I knew it was one of the trackers, but couldnt remember exactly which one :)

Just got caught up on weekly data, so can do it. If anyone else wants to instead, just post here, though. :) Don't track Famitsu hardware, so that part will be blank (unless someone else does it) until you post your regular full format with the MC 21-50 update Thursday night/Friday morning.

We're still quite a few hours from 'numbers'. Other than that it's anyones guess, but seeing as how they've released early for a couple of weeks now, i guess we'll get them at the same time this week.

No Famitsu Top 1000 at GEIMIN, yet. Hasn't it come in August before, like a couple of years ago? Hopefully not too much longer...

Google translate of the DQX article is priceless:

With weekly sales ranking to deliver, corner of "PickUp reader reviews." This week "software for Wii was released on August 2, 2012 Dragon Quest X the Awakened five online races will pick up. " This work has emerged as the first MMORPG "Dragon Quest" series. Only the title to face a lot of fans, or will be accepted if the attempt is a place online to worry about. Looking at the reader reviews, evaluation is divided into a low score that high score, as opposed to "want to play Dragon Quest is offline" that!

I don't quite follow?

Yeah me neither. None of that stuff on the chart is new release, and its over 100k. I dont get the 'uh oh'.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
I don't quite follow?

Last week it did 124k for MC and 119k for MC. This week, 102k and 109k respectively. It's a VERY low third week drop. And that's the week before the Obon. As said earlier, ruh roh.

Ah, yeah, Onitore around 100k.

Looks like the 3ds should stay around the 100,000 mark per week.

Definitely not. Itll make its way down to 50k or 60k a week or so over the time leading to the holidays easily. Its on a high right now because of recent releases.

Last week it did 124k for MC and 119k for MC. This week, 102k and 109k respectively. It's a VERY low third week drop.

Is it? It seems pretty normal to me. I dont have charts or anything but it doesnt seem like a surprising hold to me at all.

Yeh what is this game, and why the sudden huge bump?

It's a sort of action/strategy game based on a TV show.
It's the second time it jumps in the chart, which means it has been sold out at least twice and Namco Bandai is not able to fully satisfy the demand. But such numbers are incredible from a game out of nowhere.

...HOLY SHIT just noticed now Run for the Money! Ridiculous! :lol

For those asking, the reason is that it was sold out / with low shipments last weeks.
