Lets have a little game. Guess what number Yakuza HD debuts for the WiiU. I'm going to guess 27.
I bet it's not going to chart on Media Create...so <6,000 for first week sales.

It will probably chart at #29 (~4,000) on Famitsu, but there's always a chance we won't even see it listed until MC Top 50.

I also agree with Chris1964 in that we should expect ~10,000 as lifetime sales for the game.

I'll just leave this here in case people wonder why we see a mobile shift in Japan, the mobile market grew over five times this year to $5.1 billion.

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/198083/Smartphone_game_sales_are_rocketing_in_Japan.php

Gamasutra via sublimit said:
A new study has shed some light on how quickly the mobile game space is expanding in Japan, suggesting that sales of smartphone games in the country grew by more than five times between 2011 and 2012.

According to the Mobile Content Forum, and as translated by industry consultant Serkan Toto, smartphone game sales reached roughly 260 billion yen ($2.7 billion) in 2012, up 5.4 times from 2011's 48.1 billion yen ($496.5 million).

Notably, sales of feature phone games in the country were down slightly, totalling $2.4 billion, meaning that smartphone game sales were higher than feature phone game sales for the first time.

When looking at all mobile content -- not just games -- feature phone sales are actually still higher than smartphone sales, although smartphone content sales will no doubt overtake in 2013, as the feature phone market continues to rapidly contract.

Overall, the Japanese market for mobile games reached $5.1 billion in 2012.

Nexon is just one company that has seen its profits soar thanks to this boost in Japanese mobile game sales. Android monetization platform Metaps also noted recently that a surge in the number of Japanese game publishers choosing to release mobile games over the more traditional browser games has seen its business boom.

Wow Nirolak, that's interesting.

Did you know that the combined software + hardware sales for traditional video games in Japan were only $4.6 billion in 2012?

It seems that as of 2012 mobile has now surged past the traditional market based on game sales alone.

Mobile games sold more than the traditional gaming? That is pretty crazy, it wasnt really that long ago that "lol @ digital download sales in Japan" was something that were said often.

Socky would make for a new good regular poster in Sales-age.

How much of the market growth was driven by Puzzles and Dragons?
They make about $3.25 million a day as of April, though it wasn't nearly that high in 2012.

Even if it was, it would have only accounted for about $1.2 billion, but it was more like half that or less in April last year.

If I had to eyeball it, about 1/5th to 1/4th.

If someone really dug in they could probably give you a much more accurate answer, but I can't read fiscal reports written in Japanese.

The most recent Bombcast had a listener from Japan write in, and in addition to providing a detailed update on Japanese hamburgers, noted that from his perspective the 3DS was was popular with kids and everyone else was gaming on smartphones... :/

There's a chance! But i think we'll see it on the top 50. I mean, even Rabbids got it. Even by sheer power of it's name alone, Yakuza should easily get on the top 50.

Now, the real question is, will it be on the low end of the fourties or on the high end? Only time will tell.

And thank god at least in Japan Revelaitons (altough combined) sold more than Raccon City. Man... :(

Even the Dungeons and Dragons remaster got a packaged release in Japan... But it wouldn't matter much for Yakuza. The eshop version is cheaper (although not by much) and it's not being downloaded. The problem is not the price, since there's lots of games with higher prices and in higher positions in the eshop rankings. The problem is the game is not wanted by the community that owns the Wiiu.

But i have to say, after almost a week since the release, it finally managed to sell enough to enter the top 20 on the eshop.

Disregarding that, W101 preorder on amiami is sold out. :) Not much, but better than nothing. At least it shows the promotion since the direct is working a little.

Would you guys consider it possible for Japanese developers to gain ground internationally by putting more of a serious effort into mobile games?

I'm not too familiar with mobile or social games, but it seems to me that social games are currently unable to break out of the Asian market.

Well I guess we will never see ds or psp levels of handheld support again
We'll never see PS1 or PS2 levels of console support again from Japan either. It's all part of a slow painful decline into irrelevance.
The truth hurts. Meanwhile, what's left of the Japanese AAA console gaming industry continues to unintentionally hasten its decline by attempting to compete for the AC/COD dollar.

Social card games aren't doing too horribly in the West.

The Marvel one by GREE seems to be working pretty well on the iOS grossing charts.

However, the social games the West really likes are the ones that are a bit more like Facebook games, so things like Clash of Clans (town building social game) or Candy Crush Saga (match 3 social game).

Also it's late enough in the day that I think I can start a thread directly about this topic without it going to total crap immediately, so I'll link that here in case anyone also feels like discussing the concept outside of the Media Create thread.

So guys what's the sales potential of something like this? I think the title looks pretty cool despite the sometimes creepy-looking 3D :lol

But it has the biggest Weekly Jump characters
The Jump DS games did very well, but this is a PS3 game.

I feel 200K+ might be possible if they can attract 25-30% or so of the DS game's audience.

Doing worse is also plausible though.

Slow and painfull decline ?
Japan already slipped into irrelevence somewhere around half this generation.

Apart from Nintendo (which is now in process of self imploding after most succesfull generation ever)

how many franchises they have with potential to move 2+ milions units ?

Resident Evil
MGS
FF
Kingdom hearts (that's a maybe since they haven't released mainline one since PS2)
Gran Turismo

None of those are currently 2 million selling franchises, even a million is stretching it for a couple of them.

You're talking worldwide? Or Japan only? Because non of those could even break 1M in Japan right now.

If we're talking worldwide, GT is still pretty damn big. RE still does well but RE6 probably shat the bed, KH doesn't even sell 2M worldwide anymore, Final Fantasy is on a massive downward slope. MGS I have no idea.

I really don't want to be the guy that steers the discussion into this direction, but I have the feeling that the wonderful 101 might sell less than Lego City in Japan.

I had this idea of using Pikmin 3 sales as a metric of what could be considered a success on the current wii u userbase. Relatively speaking, anything doing roughly 50% of Pikmin sales would be pretty good in my opinion... but we might be looking at a 10k opening here, that would be pretty sad.

I wonder what kind of units shipment they're going to reserve for this game.

All this talk about declining console/handheld support makes me think about how interesting TGS is going to be. It'll be incredibly important for both 3DS and Vita and I'm sure Sony wants the PS4 to be a proper successor to the PS3 as well.

1 Dragon Quest VIII 3,538,860
2 Final Fantasy X 2,323,463
3 Final Fantasy XII 2,322,329
4 Final Fantasy X-2 1,960,937

8 Kingdom Hearts II 1,129,196

vs

2 Final Fantasy XIII-2 860,514

Maybe FF X HD will save them from total disgrace even if it is too little too late.

May i ask you why? I mean, i'm not trying to be blunt or something, but i just wanna know your reasons since i can't possibly imagine W101 selling less than Lego. I can see it selling bad, but not like Lego at all. In fact, i think Lego performance showed than W101 can do much better.

And the new Jump game have the potential to sell just like jump superstars to me. It looks fun and everyone loves a good crossover.

And i think RE5 is above one million if you include the re-releases and the 360 sku.
