Media Create Sales: Week 32, 2017 (Aug 07 - Aug 13)

Sales-Age Genius
I'm just not confident enough to say there'll be enough stock to sell 2 more millions by december.
Nintendo has an opportunity for big sales this year after a very long time, and not just in Japan. I doubt they'll waste it.

Not at all, supply for the Switch the past few months however was very disappointing. I think it will still easily finish the year with over 3 million sales. At the time I undershot the Switch since the other predictions on the forum were so low, while compensating with Splatoon 2 in case the Switch did end up closer to 5 million for the year.

I thought you predicted 10 mill Switch in Japan for the year?

Square Enix you owe the duty to release these Dragon Quest games in west.

So how short do you think Capcom's finger is? Just curious.

I'm not sure I would consider Street Fighter V to meaningfully be more Western targeted than Street Fighter IV. It's not like they adjusted the aesthetic or platform choices in a way that was more Western focused. I guess Street Fighter IV came to arcades, but looking at what has actually succeeded in the fighting game genre in Japan, that doesn't seem to be a major factor.

Obviously going first person with Resident Evil was going to go nowhere in Japan, but the design went from a very popular genre in the West to a much more niche genre in the West, so that feels like they just designed Resident Evil 7 to be way less successful worldwide than actually trying to trade off Japanese sales for higher Western sales.

Decisions like Dead Rising 2-4, Lost Planet 3, DmC, and Monster Hunter World seem much more along those lines as they make platform, development, and/or design decisions meant to increase Western sales at the loss of potential Japanese sales.

I'm fine with being critical of the decisions surrounding Monster Hunter World, but sometimes it feels like people are flailing to find new criticisms when they've run through the fundamental ones twenty times.

I'll never understand how a very risk averse Capcom suddenly decided to make a mainline game in their most successful franchise a first person horror game.

Resident Evil 6 didn't even sell poorly...

I don't think PS4 console exclusivity did any damage to SFV. Don't think the Xbox audience has that much pull that it would have a notable impact with it on PC and PS4+some Sony funding.
It was likely the bare-bones launch focusing on the EVO crowd which is likely not very big.

It got a lot of fan backlash.
I also imagine it's much cheaper than a big set-piece heavy 3rd person action game

My honest assessment would be that they looked at how much a PS4 grade RE4-6 style game would cost versus how much what they actually made would cost and went with the latter to avoid spending $100+ million in development.

If we look at the path and budget of FFXV and MGSV, we can see how difficult and time consuming it's been for Japanese AAA projects to stick to the spirit of their expected evolution.

I feel like there's a way they could have reduced the scope of and budget of the game without going into a much more niche genre that costs them a lot of sales.

At this point people just need new Capcom announcement to laugh at.

What new criticism? It's the same old same old since ages now. All their franchises are being internationalized (except those that they stopped localizing like the Ace Attorney series, with falling sales nevertheless) to a point that they apparently don't know anymore what "focus on Japan" even means, to a point that something got in their head about giving up their by far biggest seller in the Japanese market being a good idea.

The reception of RE6 didnt do 7 any favors.

Is this true or a GAF bubble? Far as I can tell even if there may be complaints about convoluted story, RE6 was and still is an incredibly popular horror-action game and one that people really enjoyed.

I think it's not much response as it was budget. Nirolak nailed it with that.

What big games are even left?
Pokémon, mario....cod?

Btw Wonder when this thus far nonexistent tales game will be shown

Isn't it crazy that COD and Tales of are considered in the same class as Pokemon and Mario?

As to when we might see something about Tales of, the most opportune time would be JumpFesta in December.

I don't put them in the same class. I was just curious about tales.

Mario O could do more than 1m imo, which the others won't.

I didn't mean to say you specifically, but people in general. A game that sells maybe at best 300k and one that sells 3 million both get called "big games". Not sure if there is a better way to say it, I just thought it was a funny observation.

Alrus - It's possible, but lately everyone has been focusing more on mobile at TGS, so I thought JumpFesta might be most likely due to the target demographic.

If it looks like there will be a good showing at TGS this year I will go, but I wasn't too thrilled by '16 and '15.

Unlike hardware, software remains at extremely low levels and I don't see the situation improving since I doubt Nintendo will have unknown big announcements this year at fall direct.

The only notable game I could see being announced in a direct and still somehow make 2017 would be a bayo2 port or w101 port. Platinum said they're making games and there was slight teasing.

But those are notable in terms of reception and not sales.

Only a Smash port would be big enough to drive software sales this year but chances for that happening are very low. Smaller titles can fill some gaps though but they are enough.

Most interesting thing that could come from fall direct is if Nintendo has anything else for 3DS apart from that Kirby title.

Don't expect the new Inazuma Eleven game to come out any time soon, new anime series has been further delayed to Spring 2018, and the special event they had planned for September is now planned for January.

Next episode of their bi-monthly web-show will finally have a game corner, so finally getting proper details/footage, I guess.

36M software is my guess for the year, around the same as 2015.
To hit 2014 levels you'd need the same amount of SW sold from the time of the 3DS pricecut in 2011.

Level-5 can't catch a break.
When's the next episode of that web-show ?

DQXI PS4 traditional Chinese version will release in Taiwan and Hong Kong on November 11 (source). Not sure if relevant to post here since it's non-Japan but sometimes non-JP Asian sales are talked about in these threads.

It is absolutely relevant, as the ongoing growth of other asian markets will make up more and more for the japanese market. It's very important to get the full picture, besides we were discussing DQXI situation in Asia a few days ago. November 11 is a nice date, the chinese version was previously expected for Winter.

Could the rise of digital also be contributing to the decrease in retail? While we will never know, I'd be curious what that chart would look like including sales of digital titles. I'd also be curious what the total revenue for the gaming industry would add up to.

There is still Pokemon.

Agree. some Direct by Ninty is able to come out with some surprise, i can't see the software do any better.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
I'd be fascinated to know what Capcom's internal expectations for XX Switch are- its out next week and they appear to be pushing World harder.

Yeah I agree it's relevant because of that. Just thought some might debate semantics since it's a thread primarily about JP sales and/or not be familiar with the growth of Asian markets and I couldn't remember too well Chinese language release dates being posted in these threads. I'm definitely interested to see how it performs in other Asian markets.

November 11 (光棍节) is the date for singles who have no SO in that region lol, why not play DQ instead

Sony Interactive Entertainment Taiwan is responsible for the Chinese translation so SE is relaying on someone else to help them for localization again lol .
