Sony kinda messed up with that one the drop isn't big enough. Drop $100 or go for bundles, $50 is more like a regular retailer promotion/deal than an actual pricedrop that could fuel sales.

Sony have obviously chosen to focus on continued profitability rather than marketshare, which is why their FY forecast is so conservative (basically flat).

I think this time we will not see it doing a million like MHP2's one, due to the much bigger numbers of the original.
So...
MHP3rd Budget on 22/09
MHP3rd HD version for Vita this Christmas and then MH3G on 3DS next year, if everything is confirmed.
Cash cow?
No, cash Lagicraus.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

The milking begins... PSP Version, PSN Version, Ps3 HD Version, PSP Budget Release, PSV HD Version..... damn. Wouldnt suprise to see a MHP3 Wii Waggle Edition for 2500 Yen in January.

Nevermind....they better step their game up for MH 3DS, i dont think Nintendo would pay that much money if it was just MHP3 in 3D.

Well, it's still better than what they did with Street Fighter II!

Are these new 3DS owners actually buying any games? Doesn't seem so.
There are 60k 3DS games in the top 20. There will be at least a few other games in the top 50. Many people will also buy cheaper used games rather than new ones. The software/hardware ratio really isn't that bad.

The budget version is basically just a repack though. I cant imagine that many who already own MHP3 PSP will rebuy the budget version. No much point in doing that at least, besides for collection purposes. But yeah, MHP3 will see at least 3 different versions (PSP, PS3, PS Vita).

It's not like PSP was stopping DS from doing so in those earlier years.

First day reports from retailers.

Strong sales for MHP3HD. get6-2 estimates >100k first day and could exceed 200k for the week.

Black Star is the second seller with sell-outs of the limited edition.

DW7: Special, Gundam and SW3: Empires nothing really remarkable, Gundam looks to be the title that troubles retailers most.

So, in the first seven months

Software

3DS - 2100k
NDS - 3100k

NDS - 1,35
PSP - 1,3

Wow @ MHP3rd!
...Probably this week I won't do good for the prediction league :(
And... Chris... now I have to ask you if that thing about 7500 Yen losses per 3DS sold is a true rumor ( XD ) or not.
I thought that they were losing about 3000 Yen... this should be TOO much, even if Wii, DS and all the software can cover them even in that case...

7500 yen loss per hardware unit, 1250 yen profit per software title.

The only rumors I could believe are those with the leaked upcoming titles. Everything else is estimates and dreams.

yeah, wasn't sony was saying how vita will be sold close to cost or a little loss? at a 7500 yen loss, the 3ds would have to cost around as much as vita to manufacture.

The article says operating loss per unit. Since price cut is 10000 yen wouldn't the revenue be 10000 yen less?

So, assuming a 1:1 ratio between hardware and software, N should lose 6250 Yen for every unit and software bought. It's though, however...
And so you don't believe things like these, if I understand you correctly, right?
Thanks for the clarification.

That is true and it is a fair point. But i have a feeling that it will be a bit different now. Back in the DS days, the DS was the system who offered something more unique over the PSP, now i feel that the PS Vita is more like this instead over the 3DS. Also because the PSP is very popular in Japan, so i think that a successor might be quite popular at launch.

However, the 3DS has shown the last two weeks that there is still a lot of interest for the system regardless that the PS Vita is coming out in some months. And there isnt much doubt that both Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land will both be quite popular games. And it might be that the systems will overlap eachother in sales (that one system wont eat noticeably into the other system's sales). So who knows what will happen this December =)

No because the retailer margin will have been reduced so 7500 yen less revenue sounds about right to me

そして、任天堂開発の3DSソフトの営業利益は、1本あたり約1250円と推定しているため、ハードの値下げによる損失を任天堂が取り戻すためには、ソフトを新品で6本購入してもらう必要があると計算しています。

Google/donny2112 translation:

And since profit for 3DS software is approximately estimated as 1250 yen per game, Nintendo can regain the losses due to the price cut of the hardware by getting users to buy six software titles.

Therefore, the 7500 yen is the reduction in cost to the retailers from the price drop and not loss on the system now. That may have already been clear to those having the discussion, but just wanted to point it out, as it was not clear to me. Thought ya'll were saying Nintendo was losing $80 per system now. :lol

Not necessarily, it's possible that the price cut also lowered the margin on the consoles with respect to MSRP. Although in the US hardware is pretty low margin for retailers and I don't know for sure in Japan if it's low margin or high margin.

There are a lot of unprecedented price points in the last five years or so.

It's not like PSP was stopping DS from doing so in those earlier years.

In response to various people, 3DS software this far in doesn't seem any shittier than the hardware has been.

Don't forget that the DS launched in November, compared to the 3DS which launched in February. This chart is comparing holiday launch sales to February launch sales, which isn't really a fair comparison.

Ignoring the December boost, you can see how the 3DS' and DS' respective sales trajectories are very similar.

Wonder if Wii Party finally crossed the 2 million unit sold. The legs for that kind of game are pretty amazing.

Not quite yet. Famitsu had it at 1.91 million a few weeks back, and it was gaining ~4K/week at the time. By the end of the year anyway.

Amazing how well this title has performed, with people labelling it as a bomb when it didn't explode out of the gate.

The article says operating loss per unit. Since price cut is 10000 yen wouldn't the revenue be 10000 yen less?
I believe Amazon was selling it 23,000 before price cut? And it would totally make sense that way?

btw, what caused the surge in Wii Play midlife?

Checking out the Wii Whatever numbers I was re-impressed with how much they've sold all together; decided to compare them to some other big series of recent years.

Of course these are far from equal comparisons. Some are fairly limited series, while others are much broader. And starting Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest with PS2/GBA numbers misses a bit of the picture, but I guess makes a fairer comparison against series that started since.

There's one franchise missing in that graph...

I was trying to do that graph the other day (with other series) and was thinking it was a special page, but it turns it was really just putting the game groups...

EDIT: http://www.m-create.com/ranking/

Media Create says that the sales of the 160GB and 320GB models of the PS3 went from 12k to 21k last week.

I guess the remaining 8k were sales of other models?

It's got 64 1 star ratings.

As to that MH3G rumour, we'll have to wait and see.

I was talking about the Twitter thing in fact XD
And... not so much legs for MH,probably?

Even with the launch of PS Vita? I'm sure that the 3DS will sell great, but i will be very surprised if it does well over a million in December alone when Vita comes out.

Mario Kart 7 will probably overshadow the Vita in its early months.

The 3DS doesn't really have anything to worry about initially, but they need to keep the software coming out.

Wait, I'm confused. Why is MHP3HD rated so low?
My guess is that people expected more from it. MHP3HD is basically the PSP version being emulated on the PS3, but it has some better textures here and there.

Oh okay. I mean I knew what it was, but last time I saw people doing stuff like that it was for the Mercenaries 3D when there was only one save file. I didn't know if Capcom did some bullshit for this game too.

Ah ok, like that. I havnt heard that Capcom have done anything special to this HD version in terms of DRM at least. So i just guess that maybe people expected more from it, maybe they expected that the graphics would be better etc. (it is after all called "HD" :)).
