If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

I would say so.

The second entry already has a shot to reach the 3m mark. If we think about the biggest 3rd party series ever, has this ever happened before? We know that Monster Hunter exploded well after the second entry (which sold around 500k on PS2); the 2nd portable entry sold 1.7m; Final Fantasy was still relatively small at the time; maybe Dragon Quest? But I guess it did not sell so much; shipment of DQII was around 2.4m.
A shot ? YW2 will probably reach 3 million this year already.
And yeah their is no other 3rd party IP were the second entry sold +3 million, not too mention the original selling a million. So yeah....

Wow, that's a lot of releases. Is there something special happening around that day, or did they all chose August 28 by coincidence?

It's going to be a good week for PSV, it seems.

It's crazy how this series never touched PS3 (and never will probably). If BN is happy of selling around 200k on Wii U, I don't see why trying the IP on PS3, where it could sell at least the same.

I wonder if Toukiden Extreme will have a 50% drop like Soul Sacrifice Delta or even bigger. It will depend on how low PSP version sales will be.
Toukiden was quite successful on PSV, hence it might be harder to reach half the sales, but I guess 120k units are not so impossible. Crazy how expansions of PSP hunting game were selling well above 50% of the original versions (e.g. God Eater, Phantasy Star, Monster Hunter).

If they wanted to support a last gen console they could keep making them for the Wii. On the other hand growing the install base of the Wii U will benefit Namco's other releases for it.

Tales of Zestiria release date will be announced in Weekly Jump releasing on Sept 13, which will leak like every week and people will have it on the 9th, and it will be playable at TGS.

Why not both? BN released a lot of Taiko games in the last 10 years, more than one on average per year; they released 3 on PSP and 3 on DS, and 5 on Wii between 2005 and 2012.

No;, it probably wouldn't. Bandai-Namco always focused on the console where the audience was.

During the PS2/GC era, it was on the PS2.
During the Wii/PS3 era, it was on the Wii.

As the mainstream market moves increasingly toward mobile/handheld and consoles are becoming more and more "niche" (for a lack of a better word), there really isn't many places left for Taiko... Wii U and 3DS. And mobile (there's already a game that launched rather recently, too).

Well, PSP got an entry in 2011 who went to sell +350k units. Now the userbase seems to be on 3DS, but I'd give a chance to PS3.

What are the points for the other games? I'm guessing not at equivalent points before launch, are they final preorders or first week sales?

I suspect if we got data on userbase (new users vs people who had first release) buying those expansions we would know more

Seeing how there is a big decline between original and expansion, I don't understand why they wouldn't sell the new entries as a DLC at a lower price.

If it's not technically posible, they could look for a way to give a 25-35% discount to old users. For digital copies it'd be really easy. And for retail ones, they could check online passes or something similar.

I know. But I said "well above 50% of the original game sales", not 100% or more :)

For example, God Eater Burst sold 74.21% of the original God Eater: 458,490 vs. 617,828; by adding its two budget versions, that together sold close to 100.000 units, the proportion is close to 95%. Phantasy Star Portable 2: Infinity sold 378,328 units, vs. 590,527 units of the first version: around 64%.

The fact that MH can achieve that is testament to the monstrosity that is MH in Japan.

As meaty as they may be, expansion packs are just what they are...'expansion packs.' It's a successful annualised business model, given that they're just a slighter larger GotY editions with DLC packs included.

[PS3] Persona 4: Arena Ultimax - 74pt + 40pt = 114pt

[PSV] Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 2: Sisters Generation - 36pt + 16pt = 52pt
[PSV] Chō Megami Shinkō Noire: Gekishin Black Heart - 41pt + 26pt = 67pt
[PSV] Hyperdimension Action Neptunia U - 46pt + 22pt = 68pt

[PS3] Super Robot Wars OG Saga: Masou Kishin F – Coffin of the End - 30pt

[WiiU] Super Smash Bros. for Wii U - 23pt

*= Brawl has been up to preorder for a loooong time. It was available to preorder on Comgnet already in January 2007. Plus, it's a 6 years old game, so things changed a lot on Comgnet in terms of actual sales / pts ratios (i.e. becoming bigger on average = more titles sold per pt). Just put in there for historical reasons and direct comparisons' purposes, but I'm the first one being skeptic about its current reliability. It was the same for Yakuza preorders last year / earlier this year, since Kenzan too was a 2008 game. The same thinking could be applied, even if much less strongly, to MH3G.

Monster Hunter was still growing at that time and the only Portable that got a "G" version was 2nd. Neither MHP1st nor MHP3rd got an expansion as far as I know.

The difference here is that the Portable games were already based on the mainline (homeconsole) titles. As oposed as full new entries like MH4 was.

For the original Bravely Default on the 3DS, S-E released a patch for the game (retail version) that had a link you could click on, once you started the game up, that would take you to a special page on the Nintendo e-shop to allow you to purchase the digital version of BD:FTS at a discounted price (2,900 yen), which was quite a bit cheaper than the standard retail release of For the Sequel.

That discounted price got me to upgrade from my retail copy of BD, which I later sold after I bought the discounted BD:FTS download version.

Super Mario Sunshine - 789,989 LTD
Super Mario 3D World - 580,238 LTD (so far) - Famitsu - I'm not sure how far behind it is actually right now, but I kind of suspect it might be closer than it looks?

Mario Kart 8 - 660,811 (LTD so far)
Mario Kart: Double Dash!! 825,894
Mario Kart Super Circuit 938,175

160K to go for MK8 to overtake Double Dash lifetime sales in JP!

Ah good, I checked not long ago and got nada, good to see it's a go. :)

50./00. [WIU] Taiko no Tatsujin: Wii U Version! # <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) {2013.11.21} (¥5.480)
And of course, always amazing to see this pop back up every few weeks, the last being Week 29! :) Wish we knew the LTD. Wonder if this one will keep selling even after the 2nd game's release? Also wonder if the 2nd game might do better.

Why would it be wiiu2 as opposed to wiiu.taiko2-ch.net?

Also apparently Hyrule Warriors is getting an update with a new game mode?

https://twitter.com/zelda_musou/status/502761679235469312

http://www.gonintendo.com/s/235693-hyrule-warriors-update-for-japan-nearly-done-contains-new-mode
Namco does different urls, the 3DS games use a different pattern altogether:

http://taiko3ds.namco-ch.net/
http://taiko3ds2.namco-ch.net/

And the first on Wii U is:

http://wiiu.taiko-ch.net/

AND, the url gave the same test page message prior to being announced. You just get a server not found message or something like that if you do this:

http://wiiu3.taiko-ch.net/

So chances are, both "big franchise" games will beat their GameCube counterparts when all is said and done, albeit at a lower install base? While Nintendo did not retain much from the successful Wii / DS years, they seem to at least have strengthened their trademark series a bit.

Heh, there's definitely a pattern here.

Taiko DS/3DS - June 2014, July 2012, July 2010...

Taiko Wii/Wii U - November 2013, November 2012, November 2011, December 2010, November 2009...

Taiko Wii U this holiday season, and Taiko 4DS in June 2016.

It still has a ways to go (1.8m vs. 4m+), but yeh it might not be that far off. Mario Kart being stronger after the Wii/DS days compared to the GC/GBA days has clearly been proven by MK7 and (likely) MK8 now imo.

At the same time, those are some of the few titles that have done well on Wii U at all (the other being NSMBU).

For the near term, it looks like 2014 Wii U support will be Nintendo, Tecmo-Koei and Namco-Bandai (especially since they worked on Wii Sports Club & are working on Smash)? If only we could get a cross-plat Tales of Zestiria (PS3/Wii U), but that's not going to happen =(.

It's an easier sell than MH, but it's be really hard for YW to become the next Pokemon. The series launched as a multimedia project when people and TV channels still had a lot of interest on anime. For better or worse the situation have changed and anime series are not licensed all that often.

It could clic and become a juggernaut, but I think it won't be as easy.
That's true, plus I don't know how receptive kids will be to the traditional japanese demon designs. I think it could do as well as something like b-daman or beyblade.

Hmmm, that's a pretty decent opening for HW considering that it's a Zelda spin-off (The series never had any real power in the east) and it's on the (failed) WiiU.
I don't think it's likely, but hopefully it'll have legs and stay "relevant" for a little while.

Maybe someone could answer this, but is Yokai Watch the fastest growing 3rd party series ever?
Here are some milestones to compare it with.

Large leaps from first to second entry:
Inazuma Eleven (401k) -> Inazuma Eleven 2 (1.1 million)
Monster Hunter Portable (668k) -> Monster Hunter Portable 2nd (1.7 million)
Resident Evil (1.2 million) -> Resident Evil 2 (2.1 million)
Dragon Quest (1.5 million) -> Dragon Quest 2 (2.4 million)

Largest leaps from one entry to the next within a franchise:
Final Fantasy 4 (1.44 million) -> Final Fantasy 5 (2.45 million)
Dragon Quest 2 (2.4 million) -> Dragon Quest 3 (3.8 million)
Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (2.45 million) -> Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (4.5 million)

Biggest home release debut:
Street Fighter II (2.88 million on SFC)

Yokai Watch is probably the fastest growth from the first entry to the next in terms of pure numbers. It will probably not be the fastest growth in a period between one entry and the next due to MHP's explosion. SF2 will continue to hold the record of being the fastest selling new franchise debut for third party home releases, but if the next YW game continues to grow, then we'll have to see if can match or beat Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter Portable in terms of continued growth, to see where the upper limit of the franchise is.

I think that Yo-kai Watch 2 launch period was very smart. The game could exploit the launch hype and the Obon week. Then, it will exploit the Christmas season. There is a lot of competition from September onwars (Super Smash Bros., Monster Hunter and Pokémon) but only the last one can have an effect on its sales. Yo-kai Watch 2 could grow over 3 million units this year, which would be quite big.
