I haven’t checked Media Create numbers in a while, but dominating the entire top 10, and 26 out of 30 games, is just insane.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.

Yeah, it can be a little upsetting and downright boring to see a single company take what seems like the whole cake.

But to Nintendo's defense, they have usually had a pretty positive effect on the japanese market, whenever they were on top. They're fueling the market that already exists, and bringing new people in at a higher rate than pretty much anyone else.

For example. In the PS2 era, when Sony was on top, the japanese market experienced a decline. It took the DS to put it back on its feet again. That happened again one gen back from this one,( apart from things like mobile, PC and Arcades). I'm a little underwhelmed myself, because I think the japanese market can do even better, as it did back with the DS. But you can't blame Nintendo. They are very good for the health of the market in general.

I think you got me wrong. I immediately messaged some Nintendo loving friends, and we cackled over the numbers, hahaha.

If anyone is dominating the numbers like this, fair play to them. They’ve obviously done a great job sizing up the market, and delivering. On top of that, Nintendo tends to dominate with excellent product (unlike the EAs, Hollywood, the music industry, etc.), so I respect the accomplishment even more.

Question, those hardware numbers are kinda, hard to believe. All I can find on the famitsu website is sales numbers for a two week period cause of holidays here in Japan. So were those numbers just created by cutting in half the number famitsu gave for two weeks? I’m guessing yes cause there’s no way each system just sold one more each week.

Yeh that's the case. Famitu was weird 2 weeks back and only released the top 30 software but not the hardware. They then released the combined hardware numbers 2 weeks later like you said.

Rune Factory 4 Special did decently well for a port of a really old game. Selling 50K so far isn't too shabby at all.

I'm a little underwhelmed myself, because I think the japanese market can do even better, as it did back with the DS. But you can't blame Nintendo. They are very good for the health of the market in general.

I'm not sure why you think the JP market experienced a decline that gen. PS2 sold about 22M (PS1 was about 18-19M) and GBA sold 18M. Sure GC declined from N64 (5.5M N64 -> 4M GC) but that was also the case worldwide.

Also how can it be upsetting that the Switch is dominating when JP third parties are weirdly ignoring the dominant console in JP to only support the PS4 even for titles that could easily be cross-platform and are driven by JP sales. Nintendo is largely carrying the market and Switch on its back, and most 3rd party titles in JP have sold better than expected because of the strength of the Switch.

If anything it's the big 3rd parties that have dropped the ball and haven't figured out Japanese tastes. The smaller third parties have generally switched over.

Capcom tries to make AAA titles but doesn't have the manpower to keep churning out a decent # per year, so this fiscal year they literally have a MHW expansion. Ace Attorney is weirdly missing and they've lost their AA tier (except for MM11) to fill in the gaps other than porting old titles.

Konami would rather release baseball titles for Vita even when their weirdly cut back Baseball game on Switch sells pretty darn well. Their Bomberman game on Switch did well and then they decided to continue ignoring consoles for the most part.

Level 5 is now dedicated to Switch but clearly seem to a development mess at the moment. Youkai Watch 4 seems like it's a good game but saw a SEVERE decline in sales. Inazuma seems like it's in dev hell, and other than a port of Ni No Kuni they don't seem to have anything in sight.

Bamco weirdly releases some titles on Switch and others they don't. The ones they do release are largely late ports. Having a late port of God Eater 3 to try to save it didn't make much sense. Releasing a Switch version from the get-go for what used a primarily portable series (e.g. PSP/Vita) would've made sense. Their titles do sell well on Switch though.

Square Enix and Koei-Tecmo support Switch a lot. Square Enix is probably fine (KH3 did fine, Builders 2 did well, and I'm guessing DQ11S should do well). Koei Tecmo is multi-platform for everything, but they apparently don't have appealing titles anymore. Warriors has become stale, Dead or Alive can barely even sell, etc.

Sega sadly has only Yakuza and Mario & Sonic in Japan. Everything else sells basically nothing. Yakuza has been declining (although Judgment did well for a spinoff) and the recent Mario & Sonic looks promising.

Rune Factory 4 Special did decently well for a port of a really old game. Selling 50K so far isn't too shabby at all
It was within expectation, yeah. I'm not sure what I was hoping for actually, maybe I was rooting for it to be tad bit bigger in sales lol.

RF5 can't come soon enough though.
