Nintendo's problem with marketing is that they seem to apply the same strategy for every game. Though I obviously don't really have numbers or really any data to back me up, but just an observation.

Many Nintendo games of existing series don't need to have advertisements far out from launch. They usually start near launch. That can definitely work for series that are strong and have well established fanbases. But for new IPs, that would be terrible. The best way to do deal with new IPs is what Sony did with TLOU. Though the marketing budget for that is probably way more than worth it for TW101, they didn't slack in marketing it early and getting lots of press on it. (Aside: Did TW101 get featured in Famitsu? Or any other gaming magazine in Japan?)

So yea, they need to treat the marketing for games differently and not the same like they seem to do, but that is based off of conjecture, so I may be wrong.

You are not crazy. and FFX will be that title.

you all make fun of me, but just you all wait and see, vitas will be selling like hotcakes soon

Why exactly will people will pay twice as much to get FFX and FFX-12 when they pay the both games for the same price of just one game on the PS3?

Here is the only light in the tunnel I see the Wii U reaching.

It will likely surpass the Lifetime sales of Xbox 360 in Japan by early next year. Maybe sooner if Fall and Winter is good to Wii U. 600K shouldn't be impossible but with the current trend... NO WAY this year.

Vita is close to selling 2 Million lifetime units. Should pass the 2 Mil mark by late October at the latest.

Ouch. The Wii U sure is building up bombentum in Japan.

I expected W101 to do 20-30k.Something about 1/3 or 1/4 of Pikmin 3. It ended up doing 1/20 of Pikmin sales.

Nintendo needs to market the shit out of TWW HD in Japan.

Where did SE annouce pricing for Vita versions ?

they didn't only that the vita versions would be separate purchases iirc but one would assume their would be at least some increase due to extra packaging/distribution(at least that will be the excuse).

It wont be double the price though not even square is that dumb.

I know - I was more interested from which body part he pulled that info ;)

The shipment estimate for Conception 2 seems to indicate they shipped less than what was reported earlier no? (60k for the Vita and 30k for the 3DS or something like that?). Anyway that title was massively overshipped, I don't really understand how they thought this was going to sell much better than the first one, considering it just broke 50k...

Also is this a new low for the SRW series? I know the OG titles don't really sell that well but it seems really really low for the series...

101 will sell more next week since the sales are only 2 days worth.

Unfortunately, that's not how game sales work... Game will probably disappear from the top 30 next week.

Super Robot Wars OG with already a 43% discount on Amazon.jp, ugh.

yeah it's obviously not 60k/30k like what was reported.

I guess there is some merit to thinking this kind of game might do well on vita but convincing retailers it would do better than the psp game and thats not even counting the 3ds version is kind of amazing when you think about it.

Not even close. There are lots of worse bomba SRW titles in the past too.

The actual mistake would be assuming that Masou Kishin is a major part of the SRW series or even the OG series. OG titles sell fine btw. Masou Kishin is a specific sub-series in the OG storyline which revolves around Cybuster and the Lord of Elemental world. It's not even developed by the same people who make the normal SRW games because there was this stupid IP tussle over the rights stemming from the original development of Lord of Elemental for the SFC. Eventually the legal issue was resolved, and Bandai Namco Games is working with the developer again to resume the series. The first two games sold about 100k each, so while this is a dip (50k+ opening instead of a 80k+ opening), it's nothing shocking. The series just isn't super popular and it has been on a different platform with each release. Lol.

Thanks for the clarification. the franchise gets a bit confusing with all its sub series :)

The fact that MK II was kind of ass (after a 15 year wait) probably didn't help the sales of III either.

Glad to see Conception did semi well. I ordered the vita version myself after trying both demos and preffering the visuals on vita, but it won't be here for another week or two T_T

I'm not really surprised about TW101, I ordered myself a copy so I guess I'm one of the 5,000 but it's not really a game that was ever going to be super popular. It may continue selling and eventually reach a decent figure, but it's most likely going to do much better outside of Japan than it will do in it.

You are not crazy. and FFX will be that title.

you all make fun of me, but just you all wait and see, vitas will be selling like hotcakes soon

What kind of weekly numbers would qualify as "selling like hotcakes" in your expectation? 20K? 30K? 50K?

So Vita SW was outselling PS3 for 1st year and that's without factoring in digital sales which were more or less nothing on PS3 during that time. It's a pity we'll probably never know the real attach rate for digitally enabled hw - it would be interesting to compare how much things have changed since PSP which was well within the traditional "handhelds = low-attach rate" bracket.

For a sales thread there is a lot of misinformation lately

This is the most likely scenario.

and if it is the worst selling nintendo console (not likely given the virtual boy) then I still won't care because so far, I've played some fantastic games on the system and will continue to do so.

I only really care about my own enjoyment and if 5,000 others are also going to be enjoying TW101 as much as I am, then I'll be happy :3

Most games only get 1 or 2 days worth of sales on these charts when they release. Japan is apparently very front loaded.
No, as spatenfloot explained every game debuts with 1-2 days and this is their biggest week, the week after they fall down the charts, the ultrabomba that is W101 will not defy this principle.
Most games actually get 3-4 days of sales (usually games are released on Thursday. I'm not sure if most shops in Japan are open on Sunday. If they are, then it should be 4 days). I dont think that The Wonderful 101 will sell more next week though, but there might be a slim chance that it happends.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Whats the deal with the bad JoJo All-Star Battle user-ratings on amazon ?

The fact that MK II was kind of ass (after a 15 year wait) probably didn't help the sales of III either.

I bought MKIII for the PS3 and it gives off a very strong "budget title" vibe. Not a bad game per se, but it just doesn't have the same level of production value as a licensed or OG SRW game.

Still leaps above the Nintendo handheld SRW games, though.

For a sales thread there is a lot of misinformation lately

It's kinda amazing that software sales of PS3 peaked during its sixth year. This has been weird gen.

Thanks - I was just going off the chart posted so far. I guess that ending with week 38, it's safe to assume PS3 made up the 1M difference mostly in the holiday season?

Do we have similar numbers for PSP Y1/2 (obviously hw was much higher, but just curious on retail attach comparison).

Retailers first impressions:

Tadapon:

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure - 70% sellthrough (Sales were Persona 4: The Arena x3 in this chain of stores)
Ragnarok Odyssey Ace - less than 50% sellthrough
Lost Planet 3 - Fail

Azalyn:

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure - 70 copies sold (far more than One Piece: Pirates Warriors 2).
Lost Planet 3 - 15 copies (less than the last entry)
Ragnarok Odyssey Ace - 8 copies (calm compared to last entry)

GamesMaya:

1. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (big hit)
2. Ragnarok Odyssey Ace (bought by same people who bought the last entry)
2. Lost Planet 3 (slow start)

You confuse top 30 with the entire market. PS3 was selling more software week after week, you can't cover a million only from holidays. The gap will grow more this year.

And you don't want to see the PSP/PSV comparison

Maybe this will be the end of the Lost Planet series.

Oh who am I kidding, mobile is obviously the next frontier for it.

So I thought I would put this here since it's relevant to Square Enix's overall output.

They seem to be releasing about as much content as Guild Wars 2 is (GW2 just breaks it up into 2 week chunks), which implies they probably still have 200-300+ people on the game, especially given they're intending to release expansion packs.

PlayStation Blog said:
PSB: How regularly do you plan to update A Realm Reborn, and what sort of content can we expect?

Yoshida: We’re planning on doing a major update every three months once the game has been released, and continuously adding large-scale content. Ongoing support for the game will be included in the monthly subscription.

We’ve already begun work on the first update that is currently called patch 2.1 and will introduce a large-scale housing system, as well as “The Wolves’ Den” — the first ever PvP content in the series. Furthermore, the update will include new dungeons, a new daily quest system, new Primal battles, extensions to the main story, and loads of other new content to enjoy.

There will be a significant update every three months, so everyone will be able to continue enjoying the game for a very long time! Of course we also have long-term plans to release full expansion packs, so watch out for future updates on those, too.
