Do you mind checking this one? 8676 + 3975 = 12651

Thanks a lot!

Digital is 3974, fixed. They fooled me lol

Has Pokémon Link Battle already crossed the 200k mark? The original one sold around 300k, so these numbers are not that bad: an IP successfully transplanted on eShop.

Totals:

[3DS] Pokemon Battle Link! <PZL> (Pokemon Co.) {2014.03.12} - 30.187 (166.051) / 196.238

Other retail LTD until Jul 27th that can be calculated thanks the top:

[3DS] Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth # <RPG> (Atlus) {2014.06.05} (¥7.538) - 246.590 (12.541) / 259.131
[PS3] World Soccer Winning Eleven 2014: Samurai Blue Challenge <SPT> (Konami) {2014.05.22} (¥8.208) - 154.699 (6.882) / 161.581
[3DS] World Soccer Winning Eleven 2014: Samurai Blue Challenge <SPT> (Konami) {2014.05.22} (¥5.119) - 65.160 (5.140) / 70.300
[PS4] Watch Dogs <ADV> (Ubisoft) {2014.06.26} (¥9.072) - 87.316 (6.845) / 94.161
[PS3] Kamen Rider: Battride War II # <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) {2014.06.26} (¥7.689) - 75.996 (3.299) / 79.295

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
The reason I find Kingdom Hearts a bit more interesting is that it was set up back when Disney acted a bit more like LucasArts used to in terms of keeping a notably more active hand in game partnerships.

For new deals, they appear willing to act as a traditional IP licensor for anyone who isn't their internal studios.

Like if you wanted to go license their IP and kept to their IP standards, you could presumably even release a game for Raspberry Pi.

Similarly Namco has also been licensing Marvel titles from them, including one they put on 3DS, but I don't think that mirrors the priorities of Disney's internal studios or published titles.

Edit:

Here's the video games (that aren't mobile apps) that they're most directly involved in: http://games.disney.com/video-games

There are a couple of Nintendo titles, but as you can see, they're not forcing some large strategy toward that by any means. They even are publishing something exclusive to Xbox One and Xbox 360.

So, in the case it's Square Enix themselves who decide that an handheld release would help in getting more sales in Japan (maybe also elsewhere) due to the possibility of getting not only Square Enix fans, but Disney's as well, they wouldn't have any problem with Disney, would they?

Yeah, probably what said before was implying that Disney was going to have a relevant part in the decision, since I've talked about Disney fans and SE fans, but I'd say what I posted earlier can perfectly be applied in the current case, where Disney just licenses their IPs and aren't as relevant in the decision making as before, since it could be a SE's decision.

But I can also say duckroll's post has interesting points: what if KH3 fails to sell enough compared to expectations? Maybe it could change further the KH deal between both companies, as stated by Nirolak. I think KH3 will still sell enough to guarantee future iterations, but it's undeniable how it is a possible scenario.

Dengeki has Wii U around 10,000, superior tracker confirmed.

45th to 50th are under 1,000, even if just for max 100 copies, since 50th is 900. Post-Holiday and all, but...eh

P.S. Just noticed that, according to Dengeki, Winning Eleven on 3DS outsold Winning Eleven on PS3 for the last five weeks, wut.

Wow. Did not expect 2 million. I wonder whats going to happen to this series when the manga ends :( Hopefully a part 3 :p

Naruto is still really popular in the West, I doubt any other anime could bring in those numbers (apart from a good DBZ game) and this is a yearly game right? Even more reason to continue.

I was expecting Naruto to end soon 18 months ago.. I don't think it will end any time soon.

Love Live cover is a mess. Umi and Nozomi's hair colors are almost the same. Should have thrown in Eli to swap out Nozomi or leave Umi out for Kotori.

no, Media Create is the only tracker with The Last of Us>Bullet Girls, superior tracker confirmed

BG probably plays better than TLoU, breh.

After Dual flopped and 7 was overshipped, I can see retailers being a bit less optimistic about Medarot 8's potential.

Toukiden: Extreme is also getting a PSP release???!!!

That's just crazy at this point

Also lolling hard at that Xbone launch title lineup. Not a single Japanese-developed game in there! Wow, why even bother at this point.

After Dual flopped and 7 was overshipped, I can see retailers being a bit less optimistic about Medarot 8's potential.

Which would it be fine for the publisher...? I mean, Medarot games are really low-budget projects, they would break even at 50k or so. The fact that Rocket Company shipped around 100k both times, means that they got lot of money from retailers, probably earning some profits; that's why they keep developing them. Eventually, 3DS received 3 entries of the franchise, as the GBA, and close to GBC.

how many japanese developed games have been released on PS4 launch ?

I don't see so many differences

Famitsu is always superior tracker.
So, in the case it's Square Enix themselves who decide that an handheld release would help in getting more sales in Japan (maybe also elsewhere) due to the possibility of getting not only Square Enix fans, but Disney's as well, they wouldn't have any problem with Disney, would they?
I don't really know what you're getting at. In a global market with the declining relevance of Japan within it, and dedicated handheld share of gaming declining everywhere including Japan, I don't really see how you're envisioning splitting resources and probably needing design compromises for a handheld SKU as some sort of magical solution if one of Square Enix biggest global brands falters on consoles.

It's not crazy. It's a game that started on PSP, and Kiwami is just an extension of the original.

I don't know why we have to bother dancing around theoretical stuff when there are real actual examples of this portable/console strategy thing with regards to the actual franchises brought up.

Kingdom Hearts 2 (PS2) - 1.1 million in Japan, >4 million worldwide
Kingdom Hearts BbS (PSP) - >700k in Japan, <2 million worldwide
Kingdom Hearts 3D (3DS) - >300k in Japan, could be <1 million worldwide dunno

Based on these results, S-E made the decision that the next game the BbS and 3D team should work on is Kingdom Hearts 3 for the PS4 and XB1. Why? Because it doesn't matter what it sells in Japan, they want numbers closer to 4 million worldwide than 1-2 million worldwide. It's a real world example. Here's another one:

Final Fantasy XIII (PS3/360) - <2 million in Japan, >6 million worldwide
Final Fantasy Crisis Core (PSP) - >800k in Japan, 3 million worldwide
Final Fantasy Type-0 (PSP) - 700k in Japan... errr... I mean worldwide lol

Tabata and his portable team have clearly shown they can make portable FFs which can sell well in Japan. But is that enough for S-E? Obviously not, because now his has been transplanted onto the FFXV team as co-director to get that shit out of the door. Also for the PS4 and XB1.

Why is S-E taking their two most successful internal portable teams and putting them on their two internal AAA console titles instead? This obviously isn't a coincidence. It shows that the company feels that it is more important to go after that 4-6 million goal than to worry about retaining the ~1 million sales they can hope to get in Japan alone. Let's put things in perspective - even if something like Crisis Core sold twice what it did in Japan (1.6 million), and if FFXIII sold only 500k in japan (1.5 million less!), if everything else stayed the same, FFXIII's worldwide sales would still be a million more. Japan as a market relevance is that small.

Square Enix has a higher Operating Segment in their homeland comparatively to Overseas sales, so Japan is still very much important for Square Enix's bottom line though less so due to their recent success in their Online Segment. Nonetheless, I believe higher budget titles such as Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts 3 are not conceived for Japanese audiences due to the above you mentioned - higher developments costs and a greater reach are certainly factors as well.

Smaller or Experimental titles with lower development costs such as Final Fantasy Explorers, Bravely Default + Second, Dragon Quest and so forth seem to be conceived for Japanese audiences that are either relegated to the highest selling platform, 3DS or mobile with plans for an overseas release if the title is successful in their homeland.

S-E seems to be dipping their toes in both places, as larger development titles are conceived for Western audiences, and smaller titles are conceived for Japanese audiences.

You're not following the debate! The debate is not whether S-E will make portable games in future, it's whether franchises like MGS, KH, and FF (in particular those three!) could have a "tipping point" where Japanese sales on consoles are low enough that they would make major changes to the games to cater more to the Japanese market (ie: going back to portable). That claim was ridiculous and we've been proving why it is since. :)

I think S-E dropped the ball regarding the B-tier handheld game.

DS and PSP received tremendous support and those games couldn't have been that expensive to make. I can't imagine the bulk of them not being profitable.

Bravely Default and FF:TR are proof that handheld gamers miss the Sqaure Enix that delivered quiality titles on a constant basis on handhelds last gen. they crave SE gaming.

I can understand wanting to get a slice of the mobile pie but why neglect that other market that they have secured over the years??

yes, there's FF: Explorers coming but it has taken them way too long.

where are the Valkyrie profile games? the Mana games?

where's the next main Final Fantasy Tactics game? GBA, PSP (remake) and DS each got one. where the hell is it?

Bravely Default success (in the west) is mostly due to the lack of RPG on the system than anything else and still made what? 600k worldwide?

If 3DS was as flooded as DS was on terms of RPG most of them would have failed badly (hell, already a lot of them failed hard on DS). 3DS software sales have been quite dissapointing, specially on the west, and Nintendo should kiss Level 5, because without the surprise hit of Yokai Watch, the situation for 3DS would look way grimm now on Japan too.

Either you try to jump to the bandwaggon of things like MH or 3DS is not really the place for big publishers, considering all the money you can get on mobile for 1/10 the cost.

The note that kicked this off in particular was an argument that series like Metal Gear and Resident Evil might go mobile exclusive if they don't grow from selling 6 million copies because it would be untenable if the 900K of that 6 million sold in Japan went down due to the decline of consoles.

This didn't quite seem to make sense to me for various reasons I outlined earlier, even if the series dropped from 6 million copies.

You can basically take this discussion to the extreme and present the hypothetical situation where there's an installed base of zero home consoles in the Japanese market.

That still isn't enough to change the manner in which these companies operate with their mainline versions of their large global franchises. Japan just isn't that important.

I think we can even go further and count them as a negative number to represent lost sales by switching platforms (like say we for some reason thought RE6 would sell 2 million on 3DS or smartphones versus zero otherwise, so you're not only losing 1 million console sales due to the disappearance of all consoles but also 1 million potential sales) and still calculate out releasing on consoles as the better idea.

That said this is basically the same reason we don't see Monster Hunter lead on mobile/drop handhelds. There's no proven model yet where Capcom goes "It makes sense to just make mobile games because we will make more money."

Now, it it possible a state happens where that becomes the correct decision? Yes, but there are no obvious signs of that as it stands.

If RE or MGS become completely unviable in the West and the publishers don't think they can fix them, then yes they obviously have to change things. I don't think that's a scenario that is appearing before our eyes though.

600K WW? Bravely Default sold a bit more than 600K US + JP if that's what you mean. I'm not sure what exactly your expectations were, but it did pretty well for itself, especially iirc there was a fairly small team on it (Silicon Studio). Fire Emblem Awakening also did quite well for itself.

JP = 357,640
NA = 277k
are the last numbers I have, so 634,640 in US+JP. It was clearly a better investment than FF:LR at least. Didn't someone at Square Enix say that Bravely made them rethink about titles like Bravely (like in a good way)?

I don't think anyone is saying "why didn't Square flood the market with JRPGs, etc. for 3DS", but rather why was their output SO low on what was clearly a fairly successful platform (especially in Japan). Chasing mobile is fine, but there clearly was quite a bit of money left on the table by not releasing 3DS games. Let's see how Bravely Second & FF: Explorers do, but if they do well enough, maybe it'll encourage Square Enix to at least release a non DQ title each year (which I'm sure the 3DS market could support).

Square Enix titles on 3DS (great DQ output, not much else)

Compared to dedicated gaming systems, it's cheaper to release and develop games for mobile, they don't put any effort into it, and rarely pay for advertisement.

I mean where else would Square Enix be able to release those reductive monthly Final Fantasy games?

Now, if you decide to make a 3DS game, it has to be good and have a good amount of promo, otherwise people won't buy it. So basically, a more expensive and bigger effort, with more risk too.

Look for that flash powered game that Marvelous is about to release for the 3DS in the next few weeks. It will bomb and deservingly so.

Square Enix not releasing a Tactics game on the 3DS is just plain stupid, but they probably don't have a team available or a concept waiting for approval.

I think they basically just ran the opportunity cost numbers and went "Putting the staff that made this on FFXIV instead will make us more money than releasing a tactics game which might sell 300K on 3DS."

That's basically what they did with all their internal handheld staff. They didn't disappear so much as they're now all on FF14, FF15, and KH3.

Matrix they moved to doing 50 cheap mobile ports instead of 1-2 remakes, presumably for similar reasons.

Bravely Default exists in large part since they have an affordable who can not only externally develop the game, but also direct it, meaning Square Enix has to be almost no key employees on the series.

Similarly Media.Vision can handle Chaos Rings on their own.

Final Fantasy Explorers is them attempting to get into the lucrative Monster Hunter market, because they can look at 4 million copies of Monster Hunter and go "If I can get to half of that in 2-3 entries, it would totally be worth the staff investment." where they can't ever even imagine numbers like that for a Tactics game.
