Ah, thank you Donny :)

Guess after 'heatwave' the next meme will be that the Japanese weather is too cloudy, huh

I'm especially wondering how it will affect the rest of the world, since we now know that the current models are obsolete, but don't have a release date for the new models. Like, no tech-savvy person will buy a 3DS until then.
I imagine they'll make a push in to the non tech-savvy market in the west.

I'm betting a ~$99 2DS bundle aimed at solely at children.

Square Enix explains why they're porting Dragon Quest to mobile: http://www.polygon.com/2014/8/29/6084377/dragon-quest-re-releases-mobile-square-enix

They also confirm more Western mobile releases soon, but I put that in a separate thread.

Miyake said that the mobile games are aimed at people who have never played Dragon Quest and enjoy games on a more casual basis, as well as nostalgic players.

"We've always wanted to have [Dragon Quest] available on the most popular console or gaming machine available at the time," Miyake said. "If you look at the modern gaming scape, a lot of people play games on the mobile platform. That's why we felt Dragon Quest would be appropriate to bring to that very popular game device, [mobile]."

Predict how much these titles will sell in the month (from Sep 1 to Sep 28):

[XBO] Hardware (25 days) - 50k
[XBO] Dead Rising 3 (25 days) - 10k
[3DS] Dragon Quest X (25 days) - 75k
[PS4+PS3] Destiny (18 days) - 75k

[PSV+PS3] Sen no Kiseki II (4 days) - 40k
[PSV] Danganronpa Another Episode (4 days) - 60k

It's an expanded release, not a new game, so the effort here to get the PSP version running is probably pretty low.

I'll be doing Road to TGS in a moment, but here's the new mobile news.

GREE's TGS line-up (in English, apparently contains two new games, one of which is Gundam Spirits, and the other I can't figure out): http://corp.gree.net/jp/en/news/press/2014/0828-01.html

GREE TGS website (in Japanese, but has screenshots): http://jp.product.gree.net/tgs2014/

Rovio has a new director for their Japanese business since they've had success in China and South Korea, but not Japan: http://www.serkantoto.com/2014/08/31/rovio-japan-oikawa-katsumi/

This will include a Stella manga: http://japanesevw.blogspot.jp/2014/08/stella-of-angry-birds-becomes-manga-in.html

Colopl is porting a mobile title to Oculus Rift: http://gamebiz.jp/?p=134071

Monster Strike has hit 12 million downloads (generally #2 iOS game in Japan by revenue): http://gamebiz.jp/?p=133954

Well, as you can see the console market isn't doing so well. The Wii U is barely averaging 40k a month, and the PS4 isn't even pulling numbers above 6k. The One is going to be so far away from these numbers it isn't even funny. Japan will react to the console with shock and astonishment and wonder of how such a console can even exist. The launch is just the beginning. We will see soon enough as The One takes the Japanese console market in an unprecedented way.

GREE's sales and income has been decreasing since last year; its financial situation is getting worser quarter after quarter: http://corp.gree.net/jp/en/news/press/2014/0813-01.html

They are also forecasting YOY decrease in 2015. I guess the transition from mobile platform to mobile developer did not go as expected. The only GREE game in the Top 25 grossing apps is Fishing Star, and it's 7 (July 2013). All the other games disappeared from the chart or never entered.

Yes, both GREE and DeNA have largely failed to navigate the feature phone -> smartphone divide.

It would be nice to make a very well-crafted thread to analyze trends and market movements of the Japanese mobile sector.

A bit of history (Japanese have been playing phone games since 2000 - Squaresoft released an "app" to read e-mail on the go by using Chocobos, 2002 circa), business models of the most important companies, top monetization techniques, top genres, who's falling and who's rising, and so on.

Media Create sales of the following franchises from 1991 - 2004/06/13;

Mario Kart
Metroid
Super Mario
Animal Crossing
Ace Attorney
Sonic the Hedgehog
Monster Rancher
Yu-Gi-Oh!
Mega Man
Dynasty Warriors

Interesting.

Sonic sales in MD are indeed very disappointing.

If someone can translate all the names, would be nice.

I think I'd be willing to do Dragon Quest VII on mobile, if they refuse to bring over the 3DS version. :/

Will there be any issue regarding the localization? So far, they've been releasing DQ that were previously translated in English; DQVII has not, and I do not think they can directly use the PS1 version.

DS Lite had been selling out every bit of shipment for over one year after launch, and the launch week was not an exception.

Yeah, Brain Training 2 at the end of December 2005 was when Nintendo publicly apologized for shortages. That March/April, DS Lite came out. The shortage didn't end for ~16 months after BT2, though, in April 2007.
