Is that for dragon Quest builders? Any more pictures?

No, is not for Builders. These arts are for Dragon Quest VIII.

Two more pictures at Shibuya TSUTAYA.

Even if they are different versions, I do not see Dragon Quest XI beating Dragon Quest IX.
I see something like 2.5 million 3DS, 1.5 million PS4.

Because they are different though, I think it'll hold better than if they were the same game.

Similar to Ninokuni, these are two different games sharing a more or less similar scenario. Due to their already very apparent differences and the fact they are developed by different studios I really wouldn´combine the sales.

As of right now the potential I see is that the current 3DS version will have a hard time competing with the bestselling entries like DQ9 and DQ7(ps1) and sell more akin to the original release of DQ8(ps2) instead. Late in the gen release and a graphically more advanced alternative around the same time could lead to some corrosion.

While the U4 DQ11 really has the potential of beeing one of the worst selling entry since more than 25years and DQ3 in the traditional RPG mainline series in Japan, if you just consider the PS4 version. Considering we have no confirmation of further ports for these particular game just yet.

Thanks!

03. [WIU] Splatoon {2015.5.28} - 185,946 | Retail: 138,782; Digital: 47,164

According to Famitsu, in just a month Splatoon sold almost 50k units on the eShop. Am I reading this correctly? If so, a 34% digital sales ratio for the period under consideration is quite astonishing.

04. [3DS] Great Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Bouken {2015.7.9} - 183,392 | Retail: 167,829; Digital: 15,563

Nice digital sales overall. The game was sold-out between July and August so it might have kept selling well.

15. [3DS] Cube Creator 3D {2015.7.15} - Digital: 41,654

Minecraft thirst on 3DS is real.

16. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf {2012.11.8} - 39,488 | Retail: 26,184; Digital: 13,304

This should be the effect of the eShop discount. It sold half of the units digitally during this period.

I almost feel like the only PS4 game to outsell FFXIII might be FFVIIr.
Are there any case where the remake of old game in a series outsold the new mainline episode?

The following is just a Famitsu poll but it´s quite interesting to see that a short clip of FF7 has garnered far more points than a new mainline DQ entry on the same system so far. 3DS game with even less votes so far for obvious reasons.

Persona 5 with quite a drop, in the past weeks it had over 700 votes.

FFVIIr was also announced a month and a half before DQXI.

Famitsu readers especially the ones willing to partake in such votes, most likely are aware of the DQ11 announcement and have seen information/videos of both. Also the votes don´t accumulate over several polls, they just reflect the most recent poll results and with no further material for FF7 I hardly see any huge disadvantage in this poll due to the very small "headstart", considering we have more information and video material and actual gameplay videos for DQ11.

No surprising numbers this week.
But yeah, Splatoon will hit 700k this year.
Still thinking the PS4 will hit 5-5.5M at best LTD in Japan when the PS5 will be released.

Someone I know on twitter thinks the PS4 will hit twice that and that MGS5 will be big in Japan.

I thought MGS wasn't too big in Japan.

Are there any case where the remake of old game in a series outsold the new mainline episode?

Both DS remakes of the first two Shiren the Wanderer entries sold more than Shiren the Wanderer 3, 4 and 5:

[DS] Shiren the Wanderer - 195.052
[DS] Shiren the Wanderer 2 - 99.814
[Wii] Shiren the Wanderer 3 - 97.227
[DS] Shiren the Wanderer 4 - 89.576
[DS] Shiren the Wanderer 5 - 63.269

Even if they are different versions, I do not see Dragon Quest XI beating Dragon Quest IX.
I see something like 2.5 million 3DS, 1.5 million PS4.

Because they are different though, I think it'll hold better than if they were the same game.

How many PS3 titles sold more than a million again?

2? 3?

45./45. [3DS] Yo-kai Watch 2: Shin Uchi (Level 5) {2014.12.13} - 867 / 2.666.081 (-40%)

It seems YW reached the peak in terms of userbase. The mainline entry is basically selling nothing - and the spin-off is likely selling to already existant fanbase. YW2 sold more than 5 million units across all 3 versions. We might assume that at 4 million are unique purchasers. Level-5 has to strengthen the IP and solidify this huge userbase. Busters is a move in the right direction - a good spin-off released in Summer probably tied to the next movie. I wonder how many other 3DS games will be released before YW3; YWB ver. 3 seems a lock, and Sangokushi will be a smaller title. Perhaps a collection?

If this digital sales are true, Splatoon total digital Sales are over 100k (58k first month +47k second)

For whatever reason, Famitsu had Splatoon's first month at 19,000 copies. Or better, eShop-only downloads. Quite a big difference from the estimated 58,000 copies from MC numbers and Nintendo's official PR.

If I'm not mistaken they had the total for that time up to 368K, which was what Nintendo gave us. So the other 40K was presumably download cards. Assuming Famitsu's digital sales are accurate.

So that puts Famitsu's total on Splatoon around 685K if I'm not mistaken.

You are right (with one month of digital missing)

The following is just a Famitsu poll but it´s quite interesting to see that a short clip of FF7 has garnered far more points than a new mainline DQ entry on the same system so far. 3DS game with even less votes so far for obvious reasons.

Persona 5 with quite a drop, in the past weeks it had over 700 votes.

Code:
 July 30 and August 5.

1. [3DS] Dragon Quest VIII – 1,072 votes
2. [3DS] Monster Hunter X – 723 votes
3. [PS4] Final Fantasy XV – 640 votes
4. [PS4] Persona 5 – 541 votes
[B]5. [PS4] Final Fantasy VII – 463 votes[/B]
6. [PSV] Tokyo Xanadu – 450 votes
7. [PS4] Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – 367 votes
8. [PS4] Kingdom Hearts III – 331 votes
9. [PSV] Kan Colle Kai – 276 votes

21. [PS4] Mad Max – 156 votes
22. [PS3] Star Ocean V: Integrity and Faithlessness – 143 votes
23. [3DS] Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 – 142 votes
24. [PSV] Dragon Quest Builders – 139 votes
25. [PS4] Tales of Berseria – 135 votes
26. [3DS] Project X Zone 2 – 134 votes
27. [3DS] Pro Yakyuu Famista Returns – 133 votes

29. [3DS] Monster Hunter Diary: Poka Poka Airou Village DX – 125 votes

How much the Star Ocean series sell on Japan? Didn't expect to see it on that list already!

And wait a second...Japan gave up on The Last Remnant!? xD

You are right (with one month of digital missing)

{ from - to } RETAIL/ DIGITAL/ TOTAL

{2015.05.25 - 2015.06.21} 348.557 / 19.981 / 368.538
{2015.06.22 - 2015.07.26} 138.782 / 47.164 / 185.946

{2015.05.25 - 2015.08.23} 618.743 / 67.145 / 685.888

It's entirely possible with digital sales from July to August that Splatoon already passed 700K. I was skeptical about that 1 Million prediction in Japan alone by the end of the year but provided the Wii U doesn't fall off some cliff during the holidays it seems that's the least it might sell in 2015.

[PS4] Hardware (28 days) - 130k
[PS4] Metal Gear Solid V (26 days) - 450k
[PS3] Metal Gear Solid V (26 days) - 250k
[WIU] Super Mario Maker (18 days) - 200k
[3DS] Monster Hunter Diary: Felyne Village DX (18 days) - 90k
[3DS] Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon (11 days) - 110k

You can't understand where people are getting this... except for every FF game that came out after XIII?

What mainline FF games have come out since XIII?

I've seen this narrative pushed time and time again, but there is no evidence to back it up other than:

1) The poor sales of FFXIII-2 and Lightning Returns, both sequels no one really asked for to a game not thought of fondly by a lot of the FF fanbase.

2) FFXIV - It's an MMO. Hardly representative of the health of the FF brand and even then, FFXIV ARR is doing extremely well for Square Enix.

3) FFX/X-2 HD - A remaster of a game that came out of over a decade ago. It sold really well.

4) FF Type 0 HD - A port to current gen of a PSP game that should have come out 4 years ago when it was relevant. Didn't seem to sell too hot in the west but given what it is, and what it was released on, why is that any surprise?

Again, I pose the question, how is any of this indicative of the FF franchise in poor health? Sure, we can say that Square Enix hasn't managed it too well, but there is absolutely no evidence that its sales are on the decline when FFXIII as well as it did and we haven't had a proper mainline title in over half a decade.

If FFXV releases too mediocre sales, then we can say the franchise isn't doing too hot, but as of right now, it's just assumptions based on the ramblings of a vocal minority on internet message boards.

Why do Playstation systems seem to have a hard time selling large amounts of software? You'd think the PS3 would've had more than one million seller seeing how the system is over 10 million LTD. Obviously the ecosystem is fairly strong in regards to medium sellers, but it's weak for strong sellers. Contrast to Nintendo systems, which get a fair amount of strong sellers (even Wii U, at least with Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon), but gets few medium-size games.

If those Mpl90 numbers are accurate, i'd say that these are outstanding:

[WIU] Splatoon <ACT> (Nintendo) {2015.05.28} (¥6.156) - 685,888
[PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition <ADV> (Sony Computer Entertainment) {2015.03.19} (¥2.592) - 579,544
[3DS] Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright / Conquest # <SLG> (Nintendo) {2015.06.25} (¥5.076) - 561,455

Its what Nirolak said before really. Lots of niche userbases added together = one big userbase.

All of this IS indicative that the FF franchise is in poor health. The health of a franchise isn't something that exists on its own - it is reflected by what is available on the market. If in a decade there are no worthwhile releases of a franchise, and the sales of those titles reflect as such, then the franchise is in poor health. Is it possible that it could be revitalized in future? Sure, but that doesn't change the present reality.
