2 vita titles in the top 50? It's just pitiful. If these games aren't being picked up digitally it's a really alarming situation.

250k first week. This made 180k first week.

With a userbase... what? 20 times smaller? 30?

For IP with such solid and dedicated userbase, the install base is usually not an excuse. Metal Gear Solid 4 sold on par with 2 and 3 on PS2, Persona 4 on Vita sold more than 1, 2 and 3 portings on PSP, etc. But I'm not saying Miku bombed, as moor_angol went to say here and there. 320-330k units on a 900k install base are not so crazy.

I don't see anyone who expects MH4 to come out on Vita, and I don't recall people predicting DQIX on PSP either (I actually loved it on DS — believe it or not, I was a big fan of Nintendo's back then!). Vita possibilities at this point: MHP3rd G, MHP4th, MHFrontier G. I wouldn't rule any of them out, because this is Capcom we are talking about, and they never ever go platform exclusive. This isn't charity? What was this then? Capcom is a third party. They have no interest in supporting a monopoly, and are doing their best to keep competition in the gaming market. That's the reason why MH is on 3DS in the first place. They don't want Sony or Nintendo having so much of a lead that it causes harm to themselves.
.
When will people accept that the portable line is dead? It makes absolutely 0 sense to call a game portable with mh4 being on 3ds. And i have no idea why ypu would think frontier would make a good vita game. also capcom does not care if nintendo had a monopoly. They arent playing the market to make sure one company doesnt get ahead of itself. That sounds like extreme wishful thinking. They do what is quick and cheap and good for their bottom line. and comparing the 3ds situation to vitas in any way is just a mistake. Capcom chose the 3ds before it even came out

How come nobody ever seems to compare game popularity with actual game reception/quality (user/critic reviews) ? Is this off-topic ?
There are pretty good websites for Japanese-only games user reviews (curated ones) such as the mk2 series (http://pspmk2.net/ for PSP - there's one per platform).

Not off topic, but the sample size for such reviews is in general way too small and biased to a specific audience that linking that to (possible/actual) sales numbers is futile and misleading.

In the same vein, there was a survey by Media Create comparing expectations on quality and actual satisfaction after having played the game: http://www.siliconera.com/2010/12/08/nier-and-kenka-bancho-4-soared-past-expectations-in-japan/

I seem to remember, the 3DS was only selling well at that point because of a drastic price drop about 6-7 weeks before the MH announcements. Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land were also announced at the same time as the two MH games. As for competitors, PSP was a very good competitor to 3DS, and still is. A lot of PSP software/hardware is still being sold. Hardware-wise, the PSP stands at the same level as the 3DS, so there's going to be a long overlap this "gen" where the PSP is still part of the picture.

I really don't know what you are smoking but it must be really good. Can I have some?

I just..I'm confused at what you are talking about here.

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
He talks about hardware power not sales, I think.
But it's still just as false. Maybe polygon wise they're not too far apart, though there's still difference, but the 3DS when utilised properly is capable of much more, as Resident Evil among others shows. If devs don't take advantage of it, or even occasionally botch a PS2 port, is a whole different matter regardless of its specs. Vita isn't suddenly PSP in high res just because of Ys IV.

Alexios

No, but the Vita is clearly a generation ahead of the PSP, while the 3DS is much closer to the PSP than to the Vita.
I'd say it's equally far from both. Either way that doesn't bring it on the same level as PSP, especially if you start considering 3D (which so far I didn't since that part doesn't make a difference to asset creation). Anyway, if devs wanted to keep PSP in this manner they'd do multiplatform games even if the 3DS was a portable 360. Although even low spec Vita and 3DS games don't always get (or aren't taken from) PSP ports showing that's not the reason to create them that way. We've seen PSP/PS3, Wii/PS3 and 3DS/PS3 multiplatform games, though none PSP/3DS/PS3 (with or without Wii in the equation) yet afaik. Power has little to do with these choices, only the end visual results naturally tend to be held back by the weakest platform and the intended budget.

No way to really know. :/

If 10% is the usual result as suggested in that article, I'd guess at least that (25k) or more.
I wonder if they combine things together. I saw in their latest report that they combined package goods and digital goods under one and same number. Do you have a link that IR report by the way?

looking at hardware specs isn´t helpful, game announcement are a better indicator for PSP-3DS support and there have been more and more former PSP franchises announced only on 3DS.

Doesn't 3DS spit out 30m polygons/s but it's 15m/s since it has to use 3D all the time. Isn't PSP closer to the DC than it's console brethren when comparing how many polygons it can spit out?

I'm on my phone now, but the section indicated just "packaged games" and delineated by platforms and SKUS so you can figure out titles by release. It was Q2 FY2012 iirc, should be not difficult to find.

PSP/3DS multiplatform games can be counted with the fingers of one hand. Now that PSP starts to take off I'm sure more Japanese publishers will start to follow that model.

Does anyone think God Eater 2 will be released additional platforms?

Well, there is a special announcement coming this fall for the game. Last year, there was a somewhat ambiguous developer listing that they are looking for staff to develop a Vita action title. Then there's some comments made by one of the game's producers that sort of hint at it, too.

I definitely see it happening.

Thanks. I've been searching high and low for it actually, but i simply cant find it :\ I find many reports from Sega Sammy, but i cant find the one that lists i.e Miku and Super Monkey Ball.

I still think that the digital download versions are counted under these however. I found another report, and they do indeed only mention "package goods", but they list games with PC SKU too (for example Football Manager 2012), and a lot of PC games sales are handled through digital download. Otherwise i think that they would list these games under "digital games" as well, but there only iOS and GREE games are listed. They also combine the total sales of package goods and digital goods into one number.

They don't actually single out their forecasts for games. Yuzo already said he's estimating their expectations based on how many units of software SEGA wants to sell on Vita.

Oh ok, i see. In that case i see where it is in the finacial report. 260k devided on 3 SKUs for Vita in Q2, and 600k devided on 8 SKUs for the full year. But how is the estimating done only based in these numbers?

I'm guessing he's basing it on the releases in those quarters. So Miku for Q2, etc. It's faulty though, since it doesn't leave any room that SEGA may have left for catalog sales.

Regarding Brain Age that specific market may have almost disappeared but the alternative markets Nintendo tried to enter with Art Academy, Style Savvy and Friend Collection last 3 years could remain very alive. These titles (and Animal Crossing) must prove that otherwise 2013 will be the year 3DS will start to fall significantly behind DS at software sales launch aligned.

Ah, like that. I wasnt sure if the 260k for Q2 was also a part of the 600k for the full year.

Effectively, both Style Savvy and Art Academy are very high on Amazon now (14th and 11th respectively), and Art Academy is much higher than Oni Training 5 days before the release. They're going to be interesting to follow for sure.

Taiko popularity looks to be on a rise again. 4th entry for Wii after 2 continued declines outsold No. 3 and it keeps putting good numbers with another one scheduled for the end of the year. It's a matter of time before the 3DS one outsells Portable DX with the later also starting to chart again.

B-N is one of the few Japanese companies that has managed to take advance of Wii userbase.

I'm guessing he's basing it on the releases in those quarters. So Miku for Q2, etc. It's faulty though, since it doesn't leave any room that SEGA may have left for catalog sales.
That's exactly what I'm doing. And the document states the reported breakdown are for new releases per quarter too, so it doesn't include catalog sales. It is cumulative though, so SKU/sales for previous quarters get added to the next quarter's figures.

For example with Q2FY12( PDf's quarter) you subtract 2SKUs and 10k sales, leaving you with 1 SKU and 250k sales.

I'm quite sure it will fall behind, it's almost assured. But that won't mean 3DS is not a successful platform. The market has changed, both in japan and worldwide. But success can still be achieved, and i'm quite sure it will.

Nintendo just needs to keep nurturing that 3rd party relationship.

Yep. I'd say they're really the only one to actively target the userbase with software over the past couple years. SE and Level-5 could also be mentioned, but the efforts from both companies were pretty much centered around a single brand (DQ for SE, and IE for L5), whereas B-N kept working on multiple different brands for the Wii.

Not necessarily related, but it's been interesting watching Bandai Namco become the pretty much undisputed top 3rd-party publisher in Japan over the past couple years. They've kept their primary focus on the home market, and have overtaken their counterparts in that home market.

Continuing with Taiko sinobi has high expectations for the new release as it could become one of the big Christmas sellers with Wii U launching, bundle is facing supply problems and possibly the last Taiko for Wii.

At this point, I'm wondering why Taiko is rising again. We know that the drastic fall for Jikkyou Powerful Pro has been caused by the presence of Ketteiban SKU last year and some problems with the Japanese baseball itself ( muu explained it many weeks ago)...but why is Taiko seeing this increase in popularity?

Maybe coz there's nothing else new for the Wii. Big fish in a small pond and all (which used to be a big pond).

Ok guess that doesn't explain why Taiko as a whole is rising..

I thought the most recent Taiko on Wii was a 'best of' style affair, with the next game being an 'ultimate edition.' Maybe that's why? People that held off getting previous games are now seeing these as better value, perhaps.

Unless I'm totally off with the 'best of' comment, in which case this post is pointless ;)
