It's sad to see how all three of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have pretty much lead to the death of console gaming in Japan. Sony made PS3 far too expensive and reduced the viability of it and Nintendo went after a different market. Microsoft themself didn't really do anything too wrong. They went after Japan focused titles to get into the market, but all that really lead to was 3rd parties not having a viable console for their typical titles for several years. No wonder they all transitioned to handhelds.
I would say its more the power of the DS and PSP(and mobile to a if you want to include it) lead to the death of consoles in Japan. The consoles are good but handhelds just appeal to the Japanese a lot more.
What doesn't work for PS4 with the PS2 example is that PS4 doesn't play physical PS3 games.
The PS4 also doesn't have a new media format to push it like the PS2 and PS3 did.

I don't see how the Wii had a big impact on PS3 sales and I feel like the software sales really says it all. While Nintendo games and a few big IPs were on the Wii, pretty much all third-parties were on the PS3. Only (large) notable IP not on the PS3 is Dragon Quest. Arguably that would move hardware, but yea, I don't think the Wii had a big impact on PS3 sales.

Well it seems to be "proportionate" to the userbase. Nearly 4x the userbase with 4x the software sales.

So the question is how many download cards are available?

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
If it's a Direct like last year, there's no need for that, no?

If it's a Direct I wonder what kind of announcements we'll get out of it. Last year was weird, since NoA had a conference even though NCL and NoE didn't.

Edit: Ah, here we are:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=41258718

We found out about NoA's event on August 21st. I'm pretty confident that if there was anything major coming on the 13th we'd know by now.

If we get a Direct though, I wouldn't expect much in the way of new announcements. Certainly nothing like what NCL did in 2011, that event was the turning point for 3DS.

If we didn't get a release window for FF XV this TGS, is it safe to assume that it won't be out by next year?

I'm talking about the release window here btw, not the release date.

I always thought FFXV will be a fall 2014 title. Also NB usually supports launches of playstation pretty well but we haven't heard anything from them lately.

See this is why I think regardless of what people think of PlayStation, if they like console gaming in Japan, having the PS4 fail is not going to be a good thing.

If this system also tanks, the response is not going to be devs flooding on to the Wii U and Xbox One, it's going to be a nigh complete switch over to handheld and (especially) mobile for anything targeting the local market.

The question is whether third parties want to support the PS4 straight away. It took them quite a while for them to get where they wanted on the PS3 and they might not be willing and/or able to jump straight into PS4.

It's also notable that FF, KH, Yakuza and MGS are all big games from devs/pubs that push graphics.

PS4 needs to be successful if Japan is to have a healthy console ecosystem. but for that to happen there has to be compelling games targeting the local audience. Who is left that has the talent, money, and balls to put great content on an unproven system? Pretty much just Sony. I sincerely hope they have something compelling to show tomorrow or we could be seeing the beginning of the end of the big time Japanese console game.

I don't know, if the PS4 can't support retail games for small 3rd parties, I think some of the blowback is that they finally go digital and start making small indie-like titles in addition to games on handhelds and mobile.

We might be looking at a market where there's 20-30 big budget(not just AAA, but games with fairly large budgets) games released each year, and a bunch of smaller AA titles that sell for $15-20 on the PSN store, or eShop.

If we get a Direct though, I wouldn't expect much in the way of new announcements. Certainly nothing like what NCL did in 2011, that event was the turning point for 3DS.

Yes, but I don't suppose many people were expecting those sort of announcements for the 3DS prior to the event.

While I don't know, short of Persona 5, what sort of surprise announcements Nintendo could pull for the either system, the 3DS's line-up, especially it's first party line-up, is pretty barren going into 2014. There have to be announcements at some point.

That said, the last simultaneous, international Direct was August 8th (Darumeshi Sports Store FTW), so I wouldn't be surprised to see another Direct like that to wait until October, as they tend to be ~2 months apart, to hit home the end of the year line up and provide a glimpse into 2014.

Looking it over..

this game actually looks like it could be pretty good. It has a plot that might be worthy; certainly better than standard FPS schlock. On limited info, combat might be good, and leveling elements might be good. And, ahem, it's the type of game where it is good idea to upgrade graphics beyond PSP level. It's too bad it will never get a fair review.

It's even all turn-based except for some minigames - Japan is too good for this world.

I think it will do fairly well, at least by the end of next year. At least much better than the WiiU.

Since it was in with the Call of Duties, for a second I honestly believed this might exist.

[PSV] Phantasy Star Online 2: 650k users / 500k downloads (according to translator...). The power of free.

New Vita releasing October 10th? I'm sure that will stop 5 people from buying Pokémon X/Y 2 days later.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
PS4 Launch February 22, 2014 in Japan. Nintendo has some more time to save the WiiU maybe.

8 "launch window" titles from Sony including such huge japanese focused titles as Killzone: SF and Infamous? This could be a very soft launch.

they really must have nothing for ps4 if their giving knack this kind of push

Watching the Lineup reel - most of the games are from western developers and/or also on PS3. They have to include far-off stuff like KH3 to have at least some japanese games.

So they are bringing Soul Sacrifice for March 2015 if i see it right. Guess they didn't get the memo that Vita will be discontinued by then as some people predicted here ;)

Kingdom Hearts 3 would have been there regardless how many or few games that would have shown though.

Indeed Vita is not being discontinued by 2015, it is being transformed into a home console!

I only asked for a TV out, Sony.. lol

I really think the Vita TV is going to hurt both the Vita and PS4 since someone can just pick it up for a way cheaper price than both.

So we will have a new home console, and we said that home consoles were dying in Japan :p

Sony no longer knows what to do with PS Vita.

Well that went a lot better than I expected overall.

I'd post more intelligent thoughts, but it's 3 AM and I have to wake up in 4 hours.

I'm pretty sure you actually need a Vita for you to play Vita games on the TV.

No this is a set top box with the Vita's processor inside. You don't need a Vita. It's like the Ouya or upcoming Amazon and Google consoles.
