Nintendo has changed the entire philosophy with Switch.

Worldwide Friday releases for every first party and introduction of new games many months before release, that was something they tried only with Pokemon before. The days 3DS titles were announced and came out a few weeks later are gone, they take everything more seriously. Even if something new occurs next months the chances of it coming out suddenly next quarter are slim, with other known games in hold for 2018 and later, unless it's very low profile.
I do agree with you here, though I'd point out this year is very special: it's the first year of the platform, so they really needed to knock it out of the park. Which is why, I assume, they revealed the entire 2017 line-up so early (something you already pointed out several times before). They needed to show new and potential new users that their new console was worth buying.

Not that I'd expect them to suddenly announce something huge all of a sudden, but I could indeed see something announced in the next couple of months for... say, a March release? Not sure what, though.

Then again, I was expecting a major November release and we all know how that ended up, so.... *shrugs*

I mean a major November release was always highly unlikely. It's not the sort of thing you try to keep under wraps more shout from the roof tops. I can see a major March release though it may not inherently be a new game it's just a prime slot quarterly end and all. Something like Fire Emblem if it's that far along could take it.

Any predictions on how DOOM will do in Japan? I know it's a western FPS which is typically a big hurdle, but it's so over the top and arcadey I could see it finding an audience.

Not going to do well, the PS4 game launched with sub 10k numbers.

ARMS, Splatoon 2, and MK8DX were announced pretty close to their launches.

Samus Returns wasn't announced until the game was finished.

It would seem like it would be rough for the Switch to just have Kirby and maybe Yoshi in its first half of 2018.

ARMS, Splatoon 2, and MK8DX were all formally announced in January (though some were seen on the Switch reveal as well). The event itself reveals all the most important games in 2017 up to Xenoblade and even more with very brief teases like Octopath and Atlus.

We'll see in January next year if Nintendo will repeat the same pattern they have in 2017.

Samus Returns is a 3DS game and like almost all of 3DS games this year, with low sales dynamic. It's doubtful there will be another title that will exceed 1m besides Pokemon.

I spoke for Switch Q1, not H1.

I'd also add that the timing of the Metroid: Samus Returns announcement was most likely to have it coincide with the Metroid Prime 4 announcement.

We know Nintendo is announcing a new Switch game at the Nintendo World Championship in October. While I wouldn't expect a significant first party game to be announced and launched. It would still be 4-5 months away from release.

No we don't, ha ha.

But let's be honest: the NWC are first and foremost a big promotional event, there's no way in hell they're not going to have a couple of announcements there. The 2015 one did have them, after all. Imo, it's the last chance for the infamous Smash 4 port, if it doesn't show up there, it's straight to Smash Switch.

Though I expect some of the announcements will be new fighter for ARMS and new stuff for Splatoon 2.
And Metroid Prime: Blast Ball 2 for Switch.

What we DO know is that they have to have a direct in early November or earlier most likely to give release date on Zelda DLC and other stuff, unless they do that without a direct but I highly doubt that.

I think it's infinitely more likely that they announce, say, a news ARMS fighter at the Nintendo World Championships than a new game.

NWC sounds like a better opportunity to show updates on current title rather than showing new ones to me, but we'll see.

Speaking of which, They really are done with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, aren't they?

Seems like it. We'll probably get a Mario Kart 9 in 2-3 years for Switch.

I don't think there's any way that we don't get a Mario Kart 9 a few years down the line.

It'd be one thing if they were supporting 8 Deluxe with DLC, but they aren't. I'm almost certain that the people who would be doing that are working on 9, even with some of the group on ARMS.

It will likely depend on sales. However, Mario Kart has always been a once a system series. Personally, I think MK8D is going to keep selling for the rest of the Switch's life time. Nintendo would be better off developing other games than doing another Mario Kart for the system. Perhaps they could experiment and release a Nintendo Kart/racing game that feels familiar to Mario Kart fans, but has a lot of new and different mechanics.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will still be selling in 2-3 years.
Alright, maybe 4 year then, but my point was that MK8D likely isn't going to be THE Mario Kart for the Switch generation as was speculated by some at some point.

I agree. I think MK8D was just an easy way to get another evergreen title out early on. I think we'll definitely see MK9 on the Switch in a few years time.

A little further and you're looking at a launch game for Switch 2 or whatever they end up planning.

I highly doubt that. One console does not need 2 Mario Kart games, and since MK8DX is selling like a normal MK game, why make another?

Since Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is going to outsell the vanilla game both in Japan and globally, I don't see a Mario Kart 9 happening until the early days of the Switch 2.

I mean, before Super Mario Galaxy 2 one could've said one console doesn't need 2 3D Mario games.

I think MK9 would be a really easy system seller later on in the system's life and it would sell just as well, if not better than MK8D. So I don't think there's any reason not to do it.

I'm still hoping for some more DLC, either additional Battle Mode Stages, 4 more Cups or both. I don't see why they need to rush out another Mario Kart and this one is already a fantastic showcase of Switch's capability. They also need to keep the game relevant for next year when they roll out the online subs.

I wish Nintendo was making a XBC 2 bundle instead of a Mario one. Either way it's going to sell out and it would be a good opportunity to get people to try XB. That needs the help more than Mario.

You can differentiate two 3D Mario games much easier than two Mario Kart games.

If you're buying a system for Mario Kart, it's already there. How is MK9 going to sell systems that MK8D won't? There are going to be very very few people who owned a Wii U and won't own a Switch. I just don't see the point in a MK9 for Switch. If you want to play some Mario Kart on the system, that need is fulfilled. MK8D will sell for years. No need to kneecap it. Better for the team to create something new.

Besides, they have enough existing racing franchises to do a different one a year for the next 5+ years. (not happening I know)

If it gets good reviews like previous installations, it should do fine. I think people hungry for a good open world JRPG will grab it off the shelves during the holiday season.

Dengeki has interesting stats about the market this Fiscal Year. Basically, Square-Enix + Nintendo = 66.7% of Software sales (34.7% for the former, and 32% for the latter). So yeah, market is up for first time in 10 years, but it mostly comes down to two games (DQXI and Splatoon 2).

So, all the TGS stream schedules are up and can be found on Gematsu :
http://gematsu.com/2017/09/tokyo-game-show-2017-live-stream-schedule
Here's what I think could be interesting to look forward to (in termes of announcements/details on games we don't know much about) :

Atlus : Saturday, September 23, "Shin Megami Tensei Series 25th Anniversary Goods and Event Information", they'll probably talk about the concert and upcoming events, maybe dropping some tidbits about SMTV

Bandai Namco : September 23, 13:15 to 14:00 "13:15 to 14:00 – Sword Art Online Game Live at TGS 2017", it's unspecified which SAO game they're talking about but since they're getting the seiyuu on stage they'll probably talk at least a bit about Fatal Bullet, the new one.

Capcom : September 23, 14:50 to 15:35 + 15:35 to 15:50 "Ace Attorney Series Special Courtroom 2017" We may get a tease/glimpse of what's next in the serie, or more mobile port announcements.
16:00 to 16:45 "Dragon’s Dogma Series 5th Anniversary Special Stage" They're probably just going to talk about Online and the Dark Arisen port but eh, you never know.

September 24, 14:20 to 15:05 + 15:05 to 15:15 "Mega Man‘s 30th Anniversary is Almost Here! Stage" They're supposed to release a new mobile game by the end of this fiscal year, so they'll probably reveal it here. Ready for another anniversary that will last five years ?

Dengeki : September 21, 16:30 "Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio New Titles Broadcast", they're suppose to play Kiwami 2 and will deliver new infos on both Hokuto no Ken and Shin Yakuza, so it's a pretty important stream.

DMM Games : September 21, 11:30 "Gal Metal Stage Announcement" the new Switch rhythm game produced by Tak Fuji and that was teased a few days ago in Famitsu.

Koei Tecmo : September 21, 13:00 to 13:45 "Dynasty Warriors 8 Special Stage" We'll finally be fixed on if it's still planned for this fiscal year or not, and new footage to judge the progression. They really need to show the game under a better look this time.

September 22, 15:30 to 16:00 "New Brand “Midas” Introduction Stage" It's the new mobile game brand that Koei Tecmo opened a few months ago and which we don't know much. They're going to properly introduce it.

September 23, 12:00 to 12:30 "Attack on Titan 2 Special Broadcast" This one is interesting because Koei Tecmo said when they first announced the game that the platforms choice wasn't closed yet and they were looking at the feedback. It could also contain the first footage of the game.

SEGA : September 21, 12:00 to 12:45 "Dx2 Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Live", introduction to the new mobile SMT game.
13:00 to 14:15 : Yakuza again

September 22, 13:00 to 14:15 : more Yakuza
14:30 to 15:15 "Phantasy Star Online 2", they will likely talk about the recently announced Phantasy Star Online 2 Cloud on Switch
15:30 to 16:15 "Atlus Title Stage (Tentative)" ???

September 23, 10:30 to 11:00 "PopoloCrois: Narcia’s Tears and the Fairy’s Flute" it's the recently announced mobile PopoloCrois game, it will be properly introduced here.
And more Yakuza & DX2 Megaten for the rest of the week.

Playstation : most of their streams concerns already announced & well known games.

Square Enix : September 23, 11:35 to 12:20 "Final Fantasy XV Active Time Report at TGS 2017", it's FFXV again !

It's a completely arbitrary list, there may be stuff I omitted.

If that's the case, why does COD sell systems every year? Why does Pokémon?

I mean hell, I'm not saying it 100% will happen, just that I think it's possible. Damn.

I know Octopath Traveller is way off in 2018, but do we have any remote expectations early on? It seems like Nintendo/Square Enix may really push it if they are already highlighting it and have a demo.

100k - 150k seems like a good range for first week, in line with BDFF. LTD depends on the quality of the game.

SM3DW opened to pretty terrible numbers, it won't be hard for Odyssey to absolutely crush it.

I think it can breakout and reach similar numbers to Bravely Default. Depends on how good the actual game is and on the price of course.

I hope there is an Ace Attorney announcement. Is this event something they do? If so, does it tend to accompany an announcement of a new game?

Already said "I want SMT HD/V news" in this thread iirc but...that too :p.
