Is social gaming and networking popular in Japan?

I really think if all the social aspect and social games come to Vita, the Vita will do OK in Japan. It might even do better than the PSP. It might also be a hit and a miss, it all depends on how these features and games are implemented.

I always wonder why Sony tries so hard to sell the social aspect of Vita. If people want to do social games, wouldn't they just use their phone? unless there is a exclusive social games on Vita that gets popular, I'm not sure if social aspect would play a big factor to its success.

Because they want to directly compete with Apple in that particular space.

It will fail in hilarious fashion, but they will definitely try.

They try to do a all-in-one device, hoping that people will see the appeal of this and then use PS Vita as their main portable gaming device.

Nice crystal ball you have there.

I am bearish on any company that attempts to battle Apple on their own turf, at least at this point in time.

I'm under the impression that Japan's idea of "social gaming" differs greatly from what we see it as. In a way, that niche is already being filled by stuff like arcades, Monster Hunter, and Pokemon.

I don't know, i think Minna no Golf 6 can do huge numbers on the PSV. It still is one of the biggest sellers on the PS3 and who knows how much the series can make with the release of new hardware and portable to boot, considering it's not a spin off.

I think it can even be a evergreen title for quite some time. I'm betting on it.

As far as non-Nintendo evergreens go, Hot Shots Golf has got to be way up the list. 4 in particular was a monster.

Didn't include Open Tee 2 since I don't have a group set up with it and its rerelease combined.

It's also possible the evergreeen potential for a game like Minna no Golf could be hurt by the high entry price of the Vita, in the same way the price of the 3DS hurt the sales of Nintendogs + cats.

Not actually that important
[PSP] Secret Game Portable (Yeti the Best) <ADV> (Yeti) (¥2.940)

And to think that all this time I thought it was going to be a PS3 game instead

depending on what you mean by huge number. I think everyone expects Minna no Golf 6 to be the biggest Vita launch title in Japan (actually I would say it's second biggest title for Vita after FFX remake). It will become the evergreen title for Vita but it won't do huge numbers.

There was a Minna no Golf game launched with PSP and it did a little over 600K. The one launched with PS3 had bigger opening but worse legs. Let's say Minna no Golf 6 duplicate the success of the PSP one and make it to 600K. I wouldn't call that number huge.

Based on the chart, Minna no Golf peaked at 4 and is in a serious decline. Will Minna no Golf 6 reverse the trend?

Even if it means absolutly nothing I never believed I would see Senran Kagura #1 at amazon after it went on sale (restock).

Good signs for Kagura.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=31223305&postcount=218

Seems most places in Japan are sold out and waiting for the 2nd batch of shipment to come in.

Also...

Sony Computer Entertainment World Wide Studio's Yoshida went to buy this game as well.

Edit: Oh, forgot to post the proof. Here:

And, after being not available since tuesday on Amazon, now is back with a SKU without the CD bonus for preordering,and...

Well it's also possible it got a really small initial shipment. Both the Ikki Tousen games only did 30k lifetime.

I've always wondered why do Japanese gamers have a different stance on digital downloads.
Different subject but you'll find some answers in this post.

duckroll said:
The biggest barrier for the PSP Go is how Japanese consumers view transactions, and the buying habits of consumers - in particular people who invest a lot of money into their hobbies (like core gamers). Credit cards are not popular in Japan for most purchases, it's a very cash driven economy. Along with that, gamers in particular like being able to sell games they no longer want, and also buy used games of stuff they don't need immediately. For games, recommended retail price is something which doesn't really exist beyond a concept in Japan itself. Retailers are highly competitive and price slashing is common, even at launch. Amazon Japan also has great discounts for preorders of games.

Japanese gamers are also very much into collecting stuff they like. Pre-order bonuses like soundtrack CDs and artbooks, or telephone cards go over well with fans. They like having physical copies of stuff, with nice cover artworks, bonus freebies, or limited editions. This is something PSN can never offer in the same way.

While Japanese are not against digital downloads at all, it should be understood what sort of "digital downloads" appeal to them. Pretty much every single Japanese person has a cellphone. They use many services and games on their cellphones as well. But everything they buy on their phones is not something they buy with a credit card or a point card, it is simply billed to their account and they settle it monthly. And with how their phone services work, they can access them off their phone without the need of having a wireless router, or a broadband internet connection at home or in the office. The same connect be said of how consoles and portables support digital downloads.

Now with all that in mind, let's look at what the PSP Go offers to the average Japanese gamer:

- No ability to buy games for a discounted price at your favorite retailer
- No ability to sell your games
- No ability to buy used games later at a low low price
- No pre-order bonuses
- No bonus artwork
- No limited editions
- Requires broadband connection to download large games
- Requires PSN Point card or credit card to purchase games
- Unable to borrow games from friends or play the games you might already own from a previous PSP
- More expensive than the PSP-3000
- Several major Japanese games are not available on PSN

That looks really crappy doesn't it? :lol
