Man following the Vita in the past 3 weeks has been really disheartening. And I thought for a while that it stabilised in the 17-15k range. What's even more disappointing is that the Vita isn't rising even if it has games released for it like in the past. Thinking about it I see these possible reasons why it might be so poorly:

1. Market saturation- this is probably the worst thing that could happen. It is entirely possible that the non-MH monster hunting community and the otaku community pretty much all own a Vita at this point. That would mean that basically Vita finished its 'life' in Japan in two years and no matter how many games will be pumped for the system in the above two genres (since they are in the majority of games released for the Vita) it won't get better. The way to fix this problem is, obviously, to try and get games from other genres like JRPGs on the platform.

2. Monster Hunting community is busy bying MH- this is entirely plausible but would present a huge problem for the Vita. If Vita was bought largely by fans of MH clones then obviously the numbers are going to drop considerably since a real MH has just released on another system and knowing MH's legs it will continue on to sell well for a number of months still.

3. MH4 is simply too big- this would be probably the nices and most convenient scenario where MH4 as a game is simply so big that all other console and game sales are going to suffer because everyone is only buying MH. Looking at the HW numbers one could argue that this is so, however Vita was falling before MH was released and it wouldn't explain why it is below Wii U now.

4. Lack of big titles- I think Nirolak mentioned this before but Vita simply doesn't have that big 'AAA' game that could get people to buy the system in anticipation of it. The closest we've come is probably Phatasy Star Nova and we'll have to see how that's doing. Vita is being systained by mid-tier and niche titles and that is always going to produce problems in the long run. I would say again that Sony needs to get a GT out for the system, because while it is not the biggest savior in Japan, it is Sony's biggest IP and the only card they can really play. Also securing a Yakuza spin-off would be be pretty useful. Gone are the days where we'd see a portable version of FF/KH/RE/MGS so Sony has an uphil battle here.

5. Number of titles released for the platform. We can say that 'yay, Vita got a game at No 2 in the software charts' but there being only 2 games in the top30 is pretty embarassing. Especially if Vita is to be sustained through mid-tier releases they need to be more frequent and numerous in number.

In the end, I guess it's a mixture of all of the above and shows just how much work there needs to be done for the platform.

I already tried making a bet with someone but they turned it down. But if you are up for it, alright.

When FFX Vita releases, the Vita will see a rise in sales above the 3DS for that week.

after that, vita starts to gain momentum thanks to FFX and the other titles released after that.

If that doesn't happen, you can choose between a

$20 PSN Card
3 month sub for PS+
$20 Nintendo eShop card

If that does happen, then do whatever. pay me back or not idc.

Everyone happy regardless of the outcome. If I win, I am happy that the Vita will provide more entertainment to come, and if I loose you get vidya money.
Can I take this bet, too?
EDIT: I will be fair and give you 20$ if Vita were to outsell the 3DS during that week.

Mario007: Didn't you forget
6. Japanese players are waiting for the new model of the PSV and for PSVTV? I know that the new model doesn't have too many advantages, but it has a screen with a longer lifetime, a better run time and integrated memory, which is sort of a price reduction, allowing you to use the Vita with physical copies of games without the need of a memory card. If I had not PSV yet, I'd wait for the new model.

I would consider the PS Vita TV to be the bigger reason really, simply because PSV 2000 is gonna get murdered by Pokemon when it comes out. Also the sharp downward trend for Vita was set even before the conference, so while this could have an effect for Vita sliding further/not recovering I wouldn't see it as a major factor.

GameCube LTD sales is the best case scenario at this point, so it's unlikely to even do that. Double? Not a chance.
Well, I'm talking about LTD sales of Gamecube in Japan, not the ww 21m, but the Japanese 4m.

Wii U is at ~1.08m units in japan atm with ~4.3 years to go in a theoretical life (or end of 2017)

Wii U has hit just over 450k for the year so far in japan, coming into the holidays with 3 months (14 weeks left) it should sell, if nothing changes and we only see an uptick (thanks to the holidays) of ~40% to 50% of it's years sales in the last 3 months, fairly sure this is normal for the last 3 months of the year. Anyways that gives you ~650k for the end of the year, or an average of 14k a week for the next 14 weeks. Nothing "saving" about that, and it really is what we should expect for a holiday boost. This means some weeks will be below 10k and some will be above 20k (probably the ones with releases and holidays in them)

Anyways 650k on average is the number I'm using, giving you ~2.8m units over the next 4.3 years, or about 3.9m, this is more or less Gamecube's LTD. So yes, if nothing changes, Gamecube numbers are what Wii U has to look forward to in japan, if it gets worse, it can obviously fall short of this, it could also get better if games actually mean added sales. (sorry for the late reply btw)

Yes, we've discussed this before, and right now, it seems GC LTD would be the best Wii U could do. Let us see if Smash Bros and Mario Kart 8 will change things a bit next year.

Did SSBB expanded SSB base? It could potentially be a system seller along MK8. Nintendo would have to delay the 3DS version, though.

So I was looking at old MC threads to see when MHP3rd stop charting, it happened roughly 7 months after MH3G was released.

SSBB is still selling regularly in the top 50.

There's nothing really shocking about Vita sales when you consider its lineup. It has honestly been more shocking the last few months of it being above 15k. At a certain point when you have a lineup pretty much solely directed at the niche that niche fills up. PS3/PSP ports, otaku games, and a few barely medium level exclusives is not going to sustain a platform in Japan.

And nothing about the Vita lineup that has been announces looks like a signficant deviation from the track its already on which is why I don't think Vita TV will do squat in Japan past the first couple of weeks.

Now I can't figure out which platform between Wii U and Vita will come on top because Wii U does have games coming that Vita would kill to get, and yet there is absolutely nothing of note besides them.

Isn't it really weird to use the word best? Wii U is heading directly at GC LTD, so why would we use the word "best" as if it's the realistic optimists estimation of sales, when it's just as equally the pessimists?

Best should mean an improvement to where it is now, just like worst would mean the opposite. Guessing that this is just a difference of lets say 1M, would make a lot more sense... as in "at best Wii U will sell 5M, and at worst it will sell 3M" That would be a far more accurate way to use the term best.

TL;DR: I think you are wrong in using the term "best" to indicate zero change in Wii U's sales over the next 4.3 years.

I agree with you. Could have worded it better.

I don't get it. I can't post WiiU gifs....I said on the previous with an idea about a WiiU, people responded and I decided to make it.

Geez some people get so touchy about gifs. Heres one more :)

hahaha, great

(and yes, those gifs are just for fun. Don't understand why some people are getting so upset about those gifs)

For the people who aren't regulars in Media Create threads:

What is Dengeki?
Dengeki is a website (it's also a brand of magazines / a book and manga imprint) that publishes sell-through Japanese sales data from ASCII Media Works, Inc. Every week they publish a nationwide snapshot of Japanese video game sales with the cooperation of more than 3,000 specialty game stores and convenience store chains all across Japan.

Why post Dengeki numbers when you have Media Create / Famitsu in the OP?
Among other reasons, Dengeki gives us sales numbers for titles that are too low to debut with numbers on Media Create / Famitsu. So, their liberal reporting allows us to track sales that we wouldn't be able to otherwise.

Is Dengeki less accurate than Media Create / Famitsu?
No. All three trackers are inherently trustworthy. However, they have quirks that make some people prefer one over the other:

Media Create:
+ Nationwide Japanese sales data from Media Create Co., Ltd.
+ Top 20 software sales with numbers
+ Top 50 software sales without numbers
+ Total hardware sales per platform
+ Sometimes presents sell-through figures
+ Releases first (at the same time as Famitsu)
+ Nintendo uses these numbers in their investor presentations
+ Distinguishes between 3DS and 3DS LL
- Does not track download cards
- Does not provide software sales figures past the Top 20

Famitsu:
+ Nationwide Japanese sales data from Enterbrain, Inc.
+ Top 30 software sales with numbers
+ Total hardware sales per platform
+ Sell-through ranges for all titles
+ Has the most historical data available for GAFfers
+ Tracks download cards
+ Releases first (at the same time as Media Create)
- Does not distinguish between 3DS and 3DS LL
- Does not report total software sales

Dengeki:
+ Nationwide Japanese sales data from ASCII Media Works, Inc.
+ Top 50 software sales with numbers
+ Top 3 software sales per platform
+ Total software sales per platform
+ Total hardware sales per platform
+ Sell-through figures for a few titles
+ Distinguishes between 3DS and 3DS LL
- Inconsistent data reporting over the years
- Does not track download cards
- Releases nearly 24 hours after Media Create / Famitsu

Yeah that's a huge problem right there,
By the way on the vita front, now that the console is out since... 2 years is that correct?
We can say the transition havn't gone very well.
Maybe here the lack of backward compatibility has been underestimated.
It has been a long time since we have seen a hardware without backward compatibility, what was the previous one? The Dreamcast?

It's always funny.

It is also funny that Vita probably has the best (announced) line up of all consoles for next year.

vita tv will sell to almost no one as a primary console, its a niche product that will sell either to vita owners wanting to play their games at home or people wanting to do ps4 streaming

if included it may do a bit of a bump to vita hardware sales but will do nothing for the software
apart from a bump in March/April it's been that way since Vita launched, there doesn't seem to be any sort of long tail for Vita retail software
Well, it had a good run from March to May. Then it went back to 8-10k for 3 or 4 weeks, have a good bump with Toukiden release (30k) and keep some "momentum" (+15k) through the whole summer with Dragon's Crown and other minor games...

It went for like 15.000 units sold one week to 5.000 the week before MH release. IMO that have happened because of:

A) The lack of wortwhile games in September (until Sen no Kiseki, but it's not that big).
B) I think it's not that weird that the others platforms sales decline when a sales juggernaut is released.
C) There could be some people that want to see the 2000 model before buying a Vita.

IMO it should do better numbers once God Eater and the other stuff gets released. There is GE2, that Atelier Rorona remake, Hyperdimension Neptunia remake, Gundam Breaker (although being a late port could damage sales), Sen no Kiseki... they are not system sellers, but the Vita is not going to sell 20 million consoles anyway.

I haven't been paying much attention- what games are you talking about?
From the top of my head

Final Fantasy X/X-2
Phantasy Star Nova
Soul Sacrifice Delta
Freedom Wars
Samurai Warriors 4
Project Diva f2
Over My Dead Body 2
Gravity Rush 2
Dangan-Ronpa Another Chapter
Disgaea 4

Isnt' DQM2 remake probably gonna sell better than all of those games?

You didn't even list Wii U's 2 biggest 2014 games: Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros.
Don't know why, but me too I still continue to forget about Smash.
and there is a daily screenshot update too...

Probably. It'll probably outsell all those games combined.
well, combined...uhm..could be ;p
about Wii U, sales wise Yoshi, DK, Kart and Smash could sell well, while probably FExSMT, Bayonetta 2 and X...it depends (now they would sell poorly imho). But I agree with those who see the Wii U lineup stronger than the Vita one listed above, sales-wise.

List wars :|

Vita's 2014 lineup is indeed pretty good, nothing mindblowing but Phantasy Star Nova is a big one, and I guess Freedom Wars could sell decently too. Soul Sac Delta, guess it depends on how well the first one was received. Still, outside of PSN, there doesn't seem to be any game capable of moving a ton of hardware.

We barely know anything about the 3DS's 2014 lineup though, but it already has Zelda and DQM2 so it's looking good so far.

I'm not really trying to get into a list war, but I would say if you are talking about games with the ability to move hardware, I would put Wii U comfortably ahead of that lineup. I would say SW4 could be a good title if it's a Vita exclusive, but I really doubt that honestly. That list for the most part reads
like a literal retread of this year.

I would also comfortably probably put PS3 ahead of that list as well

I know 3DS doesn't have a lot of stuff announced for 2014 yet so I'll pass on that.

I still can't believe FFX/X-2 is missing the holiday.

But aside from Phantasy Star Nova, are we really expecting big numbers from these? Freedom Wars is a wild card.
