Well, we didn't see much of a bump with Smash or Mario Kart 8, so unless everyone who wanted those games also felt 3D World was an very high need title that justified the entire system on its own, they would seem to have picked up the system earlier.

The PS4 also had an unusually high launch for what was actually releasing.

Consoles at this point are niche products, so I don't think we're talking about your average customer that plays games at all sense, but average customer who would actually consider buying a console.

Fair enough appraisal. Japan is a very fad driven market, so I don't see the PS4 taking off until something like that hits, otherwise it will just a be steady progression with only a little variance to what it is selling now. I really do think VR has good chance to be a big hit in Japan.

The Wii U has a toxic reputation and Japan is one of the rare ( or only ) places where after the big games like MK and Smash hit, the Wii U 2014 LTD is lower than 2013.

Is that really the Wii U's reputation in Japan? I'm genuinely curious since I have no idea what public perception of Nintendo is like in that market.

Wow, not bad for FFEX. And PSNova can't crawl towards the 200k mark even with digital sales.

I really do think VR has good chance to be a big hit in Japan.

Does it? Aren't capable gaming PCs that would be suited to handle VR even significantly more niche than home consoles over there? There's PlayStation Morpheus, but then we'd have to assume that that would dramatically boost PS4 HW sales. I dunno if Summer Lesson has that kinda power, heh.

I'm surprised to see FF Explorers above PSN in digital sales considering the discount promotion for the latter and the fact that download percentages are generally a bit higher for Vita games.

Is that all of PSN's download sales by the way(it released November 27th)? If it is it means it hasn't hit 200K yet right?

Yokai Watch 2: Shinuchi digital numbers at 52,408 according to Famitsu Chartzzzz

Edit: that number is until 21 December so basically eight days.

What was the top 10 eShop for retail games in 2014, again?

Also, we all know that Final Fantasy Explorers digtal sales are stunning, right?

Oh, u got mad?

It's not my fault that Wii U is a failure and PS4 has a more promising future. It is not my desire, it's just reality.

Is this quoting something I don't know about or? Either way, neither console looks healthy. Based on trends, this or next year will be the PS4's strongest year and it has yet to cross launch aligned streams with the Wii U. Will it happen? Yes for sure, but I don't think a console doing a potential 6-8 million LTD is exactly a success.

We're literally fighting over the scraps of a once powerhouse market. Really depressing.

I don't said that PS4 will be a success, just that is much more promising than Wii U.

If (and that's a big if) those famitsu numbers are correct, then there are seven wiiu games that sold more than 35k digitally. DQX, Pokemon Scramble, MK8, Art Academy, Famicom Remix, 3d world and Pikmin. Smash is the number eight at the top digital of all time at the eshop.

Minecraft seems big enough to warrant a retail release. I wonder if Sony had that in mind before MS bought Mojang. Now I think it would be impossible for Vita to get a retail release of Minecraft in Japan.

Well technically there is already a retail release of Minecraft in JP on 360/XB1 right? Microsoft might be getting its only XB1 sales because of that lol

Is that really the Wii U's reputation in Japan? I'm genuinely curious since I have no idea what public perception of Nintendo is like in that market.
I think the better question is of Japan's perception of the Wii U. The 3DS is still selling well in JP and their software is selling very well on 3DS, so Nintendo's reputation as a whole isn't the issue.

Well Skyward Sword didn't do so hot as well back in 2011. And that was on the massive installed bases of the Wii.

Massive, but arguably mostly inactive at that point in 2011.

Yeah, i dont think they are actually accurate, but i guess there must be something more than some chartzz that we know.

Okay, after seeing that top 30 i think famitsu is just up its ass. Wii party u sold 8k last year according to them and captain toad didnt managed that ammount in two months.

But it sold better than Wii party u digitally according to nintendo itself.

[WIU] Super Smash Bros. for Wii U - 590,196 + 34,268 = 624,464
[3DS] Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire - 2,681,852 + 64,846 = 2,746,698
[3DS] Final Fantasy Explorers - 253,328 + 17,327 = 270,655
[PSV] Phantasy Star Nova - 154,954 + 16,807 = 171,761
[PSV] Gundam Breaker 2 - 110,146 + 11,167 = 121,313
[PS4] Grand Theft Auto V - 139,352 + 10,241 = 149,593

[3DS] Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS - 2,220,666 + 126,303 = 2,346,969

[3DS/WIU] Super Smash Bros. (retail + digital) = 2,971,433

SSB as a whole will probably hit 3 millions in the next few weeks.

07. [3DS] Yokai Watch 2: Ganso / Honke (Level-5) - 131.181 (??? / ???)*
10. [3DS] Derby Stallion Gold (Kadokawa Games) - 100.884 (98.290 / 2.594)**

* There is a typo here. Famitsu only listed 1365 for physical and 1116 for digital.
** There is also a typo here. Famitsu listed a combined sales of 10.884. I filled in the blanks.

Those are not typos. It's just Japanese style numbering. I don't have the images, but assume it is written like this:

Yokai Watch 2: 13万65
Derby Stallion Gold: 10万884

万 = 10000 (then thousand)

What that means is: 13万65 = 13*10000 + 65 = 130065

Or, more easily, just fill with zeroes, like you did for DSG. =P

Thanks!

Why are Famitsu digital allowed/why is it discussed?

For the same reason we discuss any polling research results from any seemingly credible source. There's a science behind it. It's not just made up bullshit like some sites.

Thanks, I know 万. It's that the other 28 entries have every digit written. I guess it's a double zeroes thing.

Isn't the Famitsu polling voluntary?
And you certainly can't apply the numbers to Nintendo's eShop rankings, since I believe there were several months where the ranking was not identical with Famitsu's polling.

The Famitsu digital period is from 24 November - 21 December. Final Fantasy Explorers has been charting high digitally ever since (Square-Enix are one of the few companies to have released the digital version significantly cheaper).

Edit: I know this system isn't exact but it is fairly accurate (with the first two!). Using data from Media Create Week 52 and Nintendo's official figures then the following digital sales are:-
Tomodachi Collection - 167,448
Super Smash Bros. for 3DS - 418,065
Pokémon ORAS - 636,656
The first two numbers look legit but the ORAS numbers are way fucked up as neither SKU (it's two SKUs digitally) are above Tomodachi Collection LTD. Nintendo's Japanese total (retail + digital) is 2.920,000 which seems way too high.

I think these are the Famitsu #s for the week (based on the fact that Road's site updated and I did the math using last week's #s... folks who actually have the magazine (which I assume you have as well Road), please correct this if there are mistakes).

Can't believe FC4 has an rrp over 9000 yen, lol. I've seen foreign copies waaaay cheaper in akihabara over the last few months. Guess those subtitles don't come cheap.

Where's my NintendOS announcement, Iwata? :<

Most of Nintendo's remaining IPs aren't huge in Japan. I guess there might be an Animal Crossing game, but I'm not sure how much more that will actually move.

Come on, Nirolak, deep down you know that AC on the WiiU was once an idea until NCL saw the sales of Smash Bros. on the 3DS. Then you realised there's a bigger chance of an expansion/big update/Amiibo support for Animal Crossing: New Leaf for the n3DS than a version for the WiiU because it'll make no sale sense on the console.
It's going to be Wii ports and Splatoon until Zelda, isn't it? You can tell me.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

Aren't Nintendo numbers shipments that include digital version, not sold through retail + digital? In that case, wouldn't those numbers be a max cap, not the actual results?

YSO predictions

Week 5, 2015 (Jan 26 - Feb 1)

[3DS] Devil Survivor 2: Break Record (wk1) > 50k
[PS3] Tales of Zestiria (wk2) < 40k
[PS4] Far Cry 4 (wk1) < 35k

DS2 seems to gather some interest, despite its huge delay. This might convince Atlus to develop DS3 after all.

Huge drop expected for Zestiria.

Backlash? Did I miss something?

Alisha isn't a playable character despite having a full moveset and her being shown alongside the main character in the reveal.

In 2 weeks a Story DLC featuring her as the main character is launching. It's free during the first few weeks, it'll cost 1300 yens after that.

What do you guys think about DQ Thearhtyghmm? I'm not feeling the hype. (#104 on Amazon)

I think the art style looks really cheap (for some reason, it looked cute for FF).
